Speaker 1 (0:14) Welcome to Best of the Week Reddit Stories. If you love Reddit stories, then you're going to love this episode. If you're new to our podcast, welcome. My name is Denver. Here with my beautiful wife, Teresa. Hi. We've gone through all the best Reddit categories. R slash am I the asshole? R slash today I fucked up? R slash am I overreacting? Filtered through the top most upvoted stories of the week. So you're getting the freshest, hottest stories there is. Speaker 2 (0:36) And just want to be very specific with our expectations. This is not. just best stories that we read from the Tuesday episode. Speaker 1 (0:46) We have mentioned this before, so now I feel like Teresa is beating a dead horse. Sorry to that person who was confused. Speaker 2 (0:54) I'm sorry. I'm just joking, obviously. It's just all in good fun. But I love that comment. I think that's so funny. That was Speaker 1 (0:59) pretty funny. There Speaker 2 (1:00) are probably multiple people that thought that. Speaker 1 (1:02) Probably, right? So Speaker 2 (1:03) let's just be super duper. Transparent. Yeah, Speaker 1 (1:07) it's new, it's fresh, and we always try to not read stories that we have read before. Yes. Very hard not to do that. Speaker 2 (1:13) Although there is one today that looks like... Speaker 1 (1:16) Yeah, there's an update. There's Speaker 2 (1:17) an update to a really old... Well, not really old. I think when we read it, it was probably over a year ago. Speaker 1 (1:23) Yeah. Speaker 2 (1:24) But there's an update. So buckle up. Speaker 1 (1:27) Yeah, keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle and let's get going. Speaker 1 (1:33) I'll go first today. Alright. R slash A-I-T-A-H posted two days ago with 10,000 upvotes. Am I the asshole for ordering exactly what I wanted for breakfast? Okay, a bit of background. My little sister, Lilith, hasn't married to Josh for eight years now. They don't live in poverty, but my wife and I make a lot more than they do. So when we go out, it's generally us picking up the bill. I'm not throwing any shade. I don't mind paying for my friends slash family to have a good time. Just stating a fact. We pay 95 % of the time. I'm fine with that. So to get to the actual issue, Josh hit me up at about 6 a.m. and asked if we were free for breakfast this morning. I didn't have to go to work until 11, so I said, sure. We met them at the diner at 7.30 a.m. When I go to this diner for breakfast, I always order the same thing. I get the lumberjack breakfast. It's three pancakes or waffles, three eggs, any way you want them. three slabs of scrabble or three strips of bacon or three sausages, a huge portion of hash brown, and two biscuits with jam and butter, gravy costs extra. It also comes with bottomless coffee and OJ. It's the second most expensive thing on the breakfast menu. Steak and eggs is number one. We sit around chatting and eating. We're there for about an hour and a half. unbeknownst to me josh had pulled the server aside when we first sat down and gave her his card to pay he wanted to quote flex his new promotion again unbeknownst to me by paying for breakfast so he pays the bill and leaves a decent tip i offered to pay but he insisted i have nothing but love for my sister and i've never had any problems with josh before but 10 minutes after we got home josh started texting me asking why I had to order something so expensive while I knew they were struggling. I had no idea they were struggling. He insisted on paying even after he heard me order the lumberjack. I would have happily paid the bill like I usually do, but apparently man wanted to flex on us, but me ordering the same thing I order every time we go there was not his expected budget. Am I the asshole? No. Like, wait, what? Speaker 2 (3:46) Okay, but I do have some qualms with O-Pete. too you Speaker 1 (3:49) think so a little bit i got nothing because Speaker 2 (3:52) he's saying like oh we have to pay 95 percent of the time i'm fine with that but he makes it very clear and it seems like He is trying to flex. Speaker 1 (4:03) And Speaker 2 (4:04) then he's saying, oh, brother-in-law wanted to flex with his new promotion. I don't think he was trying to flex at all. Speaker 1 (4:10) Yeah, like, did brother-in-law explicitly state he was trying to flex on you? Yes, exactly. Like, oh, I got a Speaker 2 (4:16) new promotion so I can cover the bill now. Ha ha. Did he say that? Speaker 1 (4:20) Yeah. So like, unless he like he said that, then you know what? That is a good point. OP is throwing a little bit of shade his way. Speaker 2 (4:27) Yeah. Quote, Speaker 1 (4:28) he wanted to flex unless he said that. Like, I got a new promotion. Yeah. Cover the bill. But you can't turn around and then text them later. Yeah. No. OK. Speaker 2 (4:37) Obviously. Yes. But I just wanted to to. give a little bit of hate to OP. But besides that, besides that, he's still in the right. Speaker 1 (4:44) I thought OP might be like describing it. The fact that I always pay 95 % of the time and I'm fine with that. Just to like put into his mindset when the bill came, he was expecting to pay for it. Therefore, he ordered whatever he wanted because he didn't know that somebody else was paying for it because his normal is that he pays for it. Speaker 2 (5:00) Yeah, I get that. I get that that's like important information here. But I think the way he said like... Oh, he wanted to flex with his promotion, so he wanted to pay. Okay, but then the same could apply to you. Like, are you saying you try to flex? When you pay? Speaker 1 (5:17) Right. Speaker 2 (5:18) Do you know what I mean? Like, it's just a little bit weird. I don't know. It seems like OP's not as humble as he's like trying so hard to be. Exactly. Speaker 1 (5:25) Yeah. But Speaker 2 (5:25) anyways. Speaker 1 (5:26) Unless the brother-in-law explicitly said, oh, I wanted to flex because I have a new promotion. Right? Speaker 2 (5:32) Unless he Speaker 1 (5:33) said those words, then maybe this is a little uncultured. Speaker 2 (5:36) Yes. Okay. Besides that. My biggest issue is obviously like you cannot offer to pay. And Speaker 1 (5:43) then complain afterwards. Speaker 2 (5:43) And then complain afterwards. That is never like acceptable. Right. Speaker 1 (5:49) If you were going to complain afterwards, then maybe you should have just split the bill and paid for what you ordered. Like if you knew that he ordered the expensive item and you didn't feel comfortable paying for it, maybe you shouldn't have. You don't get to raise your hand and say, I'll pay the bill. And then. Send a text message. Speaker 2 (6:08) They also didn't know. OP didn't know. I had no idea. That they were paying. Right. Also, I don't think that that should have changed anything of OP's order. Yeah, Speaker 1 (6:17) I agree. Because Speaker 2 (6:17) I'm not going to. Okay. I worked in a breakfast restaurant for quite some time. And the most expensive thing on the menu, quote unquote, is probably like. not a big dollar difference compared to other stuff on the menu maybe Speaker 1 (6:31) five like it's Speaker 2 (6:32) not gonna Speaker 1 (6:32) be like Speaker 2 (6:33) a 200 steak versus a 60 steak yeah yeah it's it's breakfast items like it's waffles how Speaker 1 (6:40) much disparity yes Speaker 2 (6:42) it's not gonna be that big but Speaker 1 (6:45) yeah Speaker 2 (6:46) i don't know i feel like op shouldn't have to change his you know number one order the order he always gets at this place to accommodate them, regardless of if he knew or not that they were paying. Speaker 1 (7:00) Yeah, and also, it's the lumberjack breakfast. It's three pancakes, three eggs, three pieces of meat. Like, that's like a regular breakfast at a place that you go. I Speaker 2 (7:08) mean, Speaker 1 (7:08) that's a lot. But it is, but it isn't. Like, it's not like he ordered the freaking escargot for breakfast or, like, something like, you know. crazy out there that's a reasonable breakfast item and i don't understand the part where he says he wanted to flex his new promotion this is why i think that he made up the flex part yeah he says he wanted to flex his new promotion by paying for breakfast but then he says that no idea they were struggling so it sounds like to me the brother-in-law wasn't trying to flex he just felt like it was finally his time like he'll pick up the Speaker 2 (7:43) bill Speaker 1 (7:43) pay Speaker 2 (7:44) back yeah Speaker 1 (7:45) But he still can't come in here with this attitude. No, absolutely not. You're in the wrong, sir. Yeah. I'm still going to say not the asshole. I'm not going to say Speaker 2 (7:53) everyone sucks here. It's not like the asshole scale is very much on brother-in-law's side. Speaker 1 (8:01) Okay. Talk comment says, I'd probably answer him something like this. Josh, I honestly had no idea that you guys were struggling or that you planned to pay. I ordered the same breakfast. I always get there. I offered to pay when I found out you were covering it. If you told me money was tight, I obviously wouldn't have expected you to pay for me. I'm not upset, but it's not fair to make it sound like I deliberately ran up your bill. I think that's perfect. That's spot on. Speaker 2 (8:24) Yeah. Speaker 1 (8:25) Basically, Joss wanted the credit for making a generous gesture without comfortably being able to afford the gesture, then blamed you when it cost more than he hoped. That part is on him. Next time, bottomless mimosas for you. Make them sweat. Speaker 2 (8:40) Yeah. I mean, I think it would be an asshole move if you knew someone else was paying and then you choose the bottomless mimosas. Speaker 1 (8:47) Right, yeah. Speaker 2 (8:48) So don't do that. Yeah. But I think what Opie did in this situation is none of his fault. Speaker 1 (8:53) Agreed. Speaker 2 (8:55) Yeah. Speaker 1 (8:55) Especially around breakfast, too. So somebody replies and says, when I was first year of college, this annoying, huge ego attention seeking guy did the same thing at a restaurant, waited for the end and was like, it's on me. My roommate and I were on a budget and shared a meal, had a drink or two each. And that's it. The next day, his lady friends that did a walk about saying, quote, he was really drunk and can't afford it. We should all split the bill. money gathering expedition and then got so mad when we were like sure we'll pay for what we got but we budgeted and shared a meal and two drinks each so we aren't going full group split on full meals and five plus drinks for everybody else We would have been fine paying our share the night of. We assumed that's how it was going until his presentation. But for him to do this whole show of paying and making a huge deal about it, then getting the thanks and drinks everyone bought him after, then trying to make everyone else cover his credit card bill. I avoided that group after that and made better friends. LOL, no one needs that level of drama for a simple get together. It was unnecessary and he made it awkward for everyone. Speaker 2 (9:59) Okay, in this situation, I think it's different than... what OP described because it sounds like this guy only got the bill after the fact of what he knew to be a cheap bill. Like he saw what these girls ordered and then he was like, well, I'm going to pay because it was cheap. Speaker 1 (10:15) It was five plus people. So I don't know if it was really that cheap. I don't, I think they were still significant. And then that story too, I would say the lady friend is the one who did the walk. Maybe he had no idea. Maybe he was fine covering the bill because you know what? You're in college. Maybe his parents were covering the bill, not him. Speaker 2 (10:29) Yeah, exactly. Okay. Speaker 1 (10:31) All right. Fair enough. Back Speaker 2 (10:32) to Speaker 1 (10:32) you. Speaker 2 (10:32) All right. Speaker 1 (10:32) Oh, also, before we get on to the next, there was a part of that story that confused me. He said three pieces of scrapple, and that's a substitute for bacon and sausage. And I was like, I've never heard of this before. Never heard of that in Speaker 2 (10:44) my life. Speaker 1 (10:44) So Speaker 2 (10:44) it Speaker 1 (10:44) turns out that scrapple is a traditional mid-Atlantic breakfast meat made from leftover pork scraps, trimmings, and organ meats boiled with cornmeal and spices into a mush, then formed into a loaf, sliced, and pan-fried. Speaker 2 (11:01) Okay. So Speaker 1 (11:02) next time we go to mid-Atlantic, that's like more like a continent. Mid Speaker 2 (11:06) -Atlantic? Speaker 1 (11:07) That's not like mid-Atlanta. That's not Speaker 2 (11:09) Atlanta, the state. My Speaker 1 (11:10) bad. My bad. Mid-Atlantic. Okay, wait. What is this? This is mid-Atlantic is a geographic region of the United States located along the Atlantic coast between the Northeast and America's South. That would be New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Virginia. Okay. Speaker 2 (11:32) Excuse my ignorance, but is that not just the East Coast? Speaker 1 (11:35) It's the Northern East Coast. Speaker 2 (11:37) So New England. Well, actually, Speaker 1 (11:38) going farther east would be Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut. That doesn't count. Rhode Island, that doesn't count. It's like the corridor that's directly below us. Can Speaker 2 (11:47) I see Speaker 1 (11:47) a visual? Directly below Ontario, like just going down until... Speaker 2 (11:52) Okay. Speaker 1 (11:52) Virginia. Oh, Speaker 2 (11:53) okay. Okay. That kind of makes sense. Speaker 1 (11:57) Mid-Atlantic. Okay, that makes sense. Okay, so we could potentially, we could taste this. It's not too far from us. We just need to go to New York and we might be able to get some Scrapple. I'm going to put this on my itinerary. This could be a challenge. Eat Scrapple as we're doing one of our challenge videos. Yeah. Okay. All Speaker 2 (12:17) right. This one comes from r slash relationship advice posted 21 hours ago with 1.5 thousand upvotes. Speaker 1 (12:23) My boyfriend, Speaker 2 (12:24) 33 male, is obsessed with me, 30 female, and I'm tired of being stuck in the house. What can I do? This sounds Speaker 1 (12:32) like it's a movie. Speaker 2 (12:33) Hi, 35. I've been seeing a guy. We dated for three years back when I was 22 and he was 25. Speaker 1 (12:40) All right, we're going off the movie plot here. The Speaker 2 (12:42) issue is that I'm still seeing the same problem that I saw before. He is obsessed with me and the chemistry is off the charts and we couldn't leave the bedroom for the first couple of weeks after not seeing each other for five years. At first, it feels very nice and flattering, but good God, honestly, it's exhausting. Last weekend, I had to go to the store for a grocery store run. I like to knock it out in the mornings to have the rest of the day free for myself. He didn't know where I was and he flipped out and said that I had to tell him where I was at all times and it wasn't even 9 a.m. He is crashing at my place for the moment. He lost his job and he is currently looking for one. He cooks for me and cleans the house and that feels really nice, but at the same time, I'm like, so when are you leaving? It's not like I don't like him, it's just that I need my own space sometimes. I used to read books, go to the library, and go to the mall to browse on my days off work. But all he wants to do is be with me and have me, and stay in bed all day. I mean, I'm very attracted to him, but I cannot do this every single time for my days off work. I don't like being stuck at home on those days. And then in the afternoons, he wants to lay down in the living room and watch movies and play video games. I feel so guilty for saying this, but he's so boring. I feel frustrated and overwhelmed, and I don't remember the last time that he applied for a job. What can I do? Sorry if some things are not clear. My first language is not English. Speaker 1 (14:02) Huh. It's interesting. You say that there is so much chemistry. Can't keep your hands off each other. Speaker 2 (14:10) I think sexually. Yes, Speaker 1 (14:11) sexually. But then you also say that he's so boring. So doesn't that like. Turn Speaker 2 (14:17) you off. Speaker 1 (14:18) Turn you off. Give you the ick a little bit. Like he never wants to do anything but have sex, play video games. Like doesn't that lower your attraction to that person? Like I would think it would. I would think maybe you're not so revved up and ready to go when you've been looking at him on the couch eating Doritos, getting that Dorito dust on his fingertips while he's playing Call of Duty. Speaker 2 (14:37) Wow, now Speaker 1 (14:37) I Speaker 2 (14:38) know how you feel about me when I eat Doritos. Speaker 1 (14:39) Oh, yeah. No, when you eat Doritos, it's like... I don't know. It's like a scene like sparkles start coming around you and like the lighting changes and it goes slow-mo. You're like licking your fingers. Romantic music comes on like, you know, like that kind of like setting the scene like that. Oh Speaker 2 (14:55) my Speaker 1 (14:55) gosh. Teresa like licking her fingertips up the Dorito dust. It's like magical when I watch Teresa do Speaker 2 (14:59) it. Guys, I think Denver's a little obsessed with me. Speaker 1 (15:04) Maybe. It's okay. You can admit it. I'll put a ring on that. Speaker 2 (15:09) Yeah, I think maybe she's just primarily motivated by his looks. I think that's what's driving this. Speaker 2 (15:18) Sexual chemistry, maybe. Right? Speaker 1 (15:19) Everything else he does is like... But yeah, you'll get there. You'll get out of this. You know what needs to be Speaker 2 (15:26) done. Speaker 1 (15:26) You know Speaker 2 (15:26) what needs to be done. Yeah, you know. Speaker 1 (15:28) You're like... You're one foot Speaker 2 (15:29) out the door already. Speaker 1 (15:30) Exactly. We dated for three years when you guys were younger. Now I'm seeing the same problems and stuff. Like, you know. Also, it's a red flag where he's like, you need to tell me where you are. Bitch, you're Speaker 2 (15:42) in Speaker 1 (15:42) my house. You're fucking lucky. When I walk in, you better be on your hands and knees praying like I'm your goddess. I mean, Speaker 2 (15:48) I think he does do that. Well, Speaker 1 (15:50) don't ask questions then. Pray and serve and don't ask questions. Be a good little boy. Speaker 2 (16:02) Yeah, I honestly don't even think OP needs to hear comments from Redditors, lurkers. I feel like she would have got there on her own. Also, Speaker 1 (16:12) do you think he lost his place? Because he says he lost his job. He's currently looking for one. That's why he's not leaving. When is he going to leave? When is he going to go home? Speaker 2
