Speaker 1 (0:00) The Weekly Planet Speaker 2 (0:02) Welcome back everybody to another episode of the Weekly Planet where we talk movies and comics and TV shows. My name is James, also known as Mr. Sunday. With me as always is Nick Mason. It's Speaker 1 (0:12) great to Speaker 2 (0:12) be Speaker 1 (0:12) here. It's Speaker 2 (0:13) great to be here. What a great day to be here. Speaker 1 (0:14) We're having a great day with the Great Dane report running in. Yep. You can't see it, but... Because it's dead. Speaker 2 (0:21) You'd be able to see it otherwise. Speaker 1 (0:23) Yeah, and that would be unappealing. Yeah, Speaker 2 (0:25) yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We would show Speaker 1 (0:26) you. Anyway, good start. Great start. Bring Speaker 2 (0:28) up Speaker 1 (0:28) dead dogs, I think. Speaker 2 (0:29) Dead dogs and it's a real dead dog. It's not a dog. It's really upsetting. Why have we done this? I Speaker 1 (0:35) don't know. Yeah. So it's just word association a lot of the time. I just want to say we as well because we did this together. Speaker 2 (0:40) Absolutely. We planned Speaker 1 (0:41) it out. We said, how can we start off a podcast about movies and TV shows and sometimes comic books and sometimes video games and sometimes video game adaptations? How can we start it off with a bang in a way that people will not find off-putting? And we said, dead dogs? Yeah. One dead dog. One dead dog. Let's imagine a dead dog. No, it's real. Speaker 2 (0:59) We brought it in. Speaker 1 (1:00) Yeah. Together. Yeah. Directed off the road. Speaker 2 (1:03) Well, Mason, you mentioned video game movies. Yes, I did. Am I talking about one of the most well-received ones of all time? For now. Speaker 1 (1:10) For now, exactly. Speaker 2 (1:11) We'll see how that goes. Speaker 1 (1:12) Before the review bombs start from us. Yeah, that's right. I'd rather have a dead dog in this. Maybe there is one, Speaker 2 (1:18) though. Speaker 1 (1:18) That's something you like, though. Yeah, yeah, Speaker 2 (1:19) yeah, yeah, yeah. So I haven't had time to see Cody v. Acme, so I do want to talk about it next week. You have seen it, though. I've seen it. I'd love to do a classic episode. about a classic movie. It's classic because it was made like nine years ago or whatever. Speaker 1 (1:32) Oh, yeah, that's true. Speaker 2 (1:33) It's basically vintage at this point, isn't it? Speaker 1 (1:35) There is a 30 years later. There's a bit set, you know, in the past and there's a thing that's like 30 years later. And I'm like, oh, yeah, so this movie is now set in 2022. Speaker 2 (1:44) Oh, that's fun and good. So we're also talking about Zack Snyder's back and he's got all sorts of opinions. Zack Speaker 1 (1:52) Snyder's back Snyder? Back Speaker 2 (1:54) Snyder. Back Snyder. including how he wants to adapt Speaker 1 (1:57) The Dark Knight Returns. Interesting, interesting thing that you'd want to adapt. Again. Superman fighting Batman and other stuff, but mostly the Superman and Batman fight. And Speaker 2 (2:08) the Speaker 1 (2:08) gun stuff. The gun stuff, I guess. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Speaker 2 (2:10) But also his latest movie, The Last Photograph, has screened and the reviews are not great. We can talk a bit about that as well. Got some Superman news, Mason. Oh, yes, oh, yes. Speaker 1 (2:21) We've got some Lantern Speaker 2 (2:21) Season 2. Potential news or maybe a movie news. Speaker 1 (2:25) Oh. And then we've got some Tom Cruise news. Tom Cruise news. You know, because Speaker 2 (2:29) he's out doing media at the moment. Weird media. He's Speaker 1 (2:32) doing weird media, isn't he? Like the Tom Cruise of old. I would say if you pick an interview he's done in the last week or so, and if you were to describe it, I'd say evasive. Yeah. Weirdly evasive. Constantly. What is he even doing? I don't know. I have Speaker 2 (2:51) theories and we'll talk about Speaker 1 (2:52) it. But also he's allowed to be evasive. Yeah. But like. But I mean, if you're going to be absolutely evasive in every interview, why are you doing the interviews? Because it's funny. It is funny. It's funny. Yeah. And I am reading all those interviews because I'm like, what's he not going to say this time? Well, I Speaker 2 (3:09) started to listen to some and I'm like. Speaker 1 (3:11) Oh, that's your first mistake. Speaker 2 (3:11) Yeah. I'm like, this is nothing. Yeah. Speaker 1 (3:13) A hundred percent. Speaker 1 (3:17) Also, if you notice... This is like eating a bag of wind that came out of a dead dog. Good, bring it back. Bring it back to the dead dog. I think that's important. That can be the running bit. Imagine a dead dog. This will be good for all the listeners who have lost a little furry friend. Why Speaker 2 (3:33) am I doing this? I Speaker 1 (3:34) don't Speaker 2 (3:35) know. Not the dead one. I have an actual dog. Yeah. Anyways. Also, Speaker 1 (3:39) I was going to say, listeners, if throughout this podcast you're... thinking perhaps they're pausing a little too long between sentences. That is because we're both deadlocked on – our eyes are locked on the podcasting board we use that has repeatedly failed on us. Today. Today. And we lost a bunch of stuff we recorded. So we're now just going to be staring at it going, hope it doesn't switch off. Hope it doesn't switch off. Speaker 2 (4:05) What were you saying? Hope Speaker 1 (4:06) it doesn't switch off. I think Speaker 2 (4:06) now that it's going, we should be all right. Yeah. That's Speaker 1 (4:09) a Speaker 2 (4:09) thing Speaker 1 (4:09) to say. I'm going to replace this, though. Okay. With a Speaker 2 (4:12) man. Speaker 1 (4:13) who can recount our tales. Speaker 2 (4:15) Old school, I like it. Old school style, that's right. Like Speaker 1 (4:17) a bard of some sort. And Speaker 2 (4:19) then they killed the dog. Oh, the dog was already dead. Speaker 1 (4:22) They just dragged it off the road where it was hit by yon cart. Speaker 1 (4:28) Not a car. Old timey. Cart. Speaker 2 (4:31) Yeah. Anyway, there's time codes below if you do want to jump to anything in particular. Let's start with this though, via variety. But you Speaker 1 (4:36) can't skip the dead dog stuff. That's going to be permeated through the whole. Yeah, Speaker 2 (4:39) this is Speaker 1 (4:39) pretty much. There's Speaker 2 (4:41) not going to be a recut of this where there's none of that in there. No. Speaker 1 (4:44) Unusable. Unusable. But there might be a super cut of us just saying dead dog. That would be a 10 minute clip you could put on YouTube. Speaker 2 (4:56) Zach's not a smoker to variety. I would just ask him about like his views, like political and otherwise. And he was talking about how, you know, people think I'm conservative, but 300 is one of the gayest movies ever made. No, Speaker 1 (5:06) it's not. I always Speaker 2 (5:07) go, look, there are a few movies where people come in straight and come out gay. And 300 is one of them. I don't think Speaker 1 (5:13) that's true at all. I don't think Speaker 2 (5:14) you can. You're thinking of the mummy. You are thinking of the mummy, but also I don't, you can't. Media doesn't make people gay. Correct, yes. You are or you aren't. Yes, Speaker 1 (5:23) that's right. You might have a realisation about Brendan Fraser or Rachel Weisz. Which is totally Speaker 2 (5:28) acceptable and a thing that's happened to all of us. But I think that's really funny. Yeah, Speaker 1 (5:34) yeah, yeah. Also, he's like, people say I'm conservative, but I'm really not. But also, I'm very excited to be adapting Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead, which I think he said during one of those interviews. Speaker 2 (5:44) You know what I think it is? I think he's just like... What do I think looks cool? Like that's what I really think. Exactly. I don't think he's like a horrible conservative guy. I Speaker 1 (5:55) bet Speaker 2 (5:55) he saw Speaker 1 (5:55) Megalopolis and he was like, man, I wish I directed that. Speaker 2 (6:00) There's no way Speaker 1 (6:01) he sat through Megalopolis. I wish I had infinite money, an infinitely large budget, and no one to say no to me, and I just would have made Megalopolis. Speaker 2 (6:11) Yeah. So as mentioned, his movie came out. It's called The Last Photograph, Speaker 1 (6:16) which Speaker 2 (6:16) is a, would you say, slice of life? Speaker 1 (6:19) I don't know. I don't know anything about it. Is it about a Navy SEAL guy or something? I'll read you Speaker 2 (6:23) the synopsis, Mason. Okay. So it's a 2026 film. We'll start there. That's this year. That's good. That's good. He's keeping it current and I Speaker 1 (6:30) like that. Speaker 2 (6:30) An ex-DEA operative searches the South American mountains for his missing niece and nephew after their parents are murdered. Okay. With the help of a war photographer who witnessed the killers, he confronts his past as the journey blows the line between reality and the surreal. Oh. Speaker 1 (6:45) So this Speaker 2 (6:46) had like a much smaller budget than his normal. Speaker 2 (6:51) Okay. And, you know, what I think is interesting, and if you've seen the trailer, Speaker 1 (6:55) and Speaker 2 (6:55) if you know anything about this, which you now do from the synopsis, it is different than what he has been doing. Because Batman's not in it. Batman's not in it. That's one of the things. Superman in it? I think Superman is in it. Interesting. So that's probably the same. Wow. And he's like, Speaker 1 (7:09) this is your own thing, man. I don't deal with. The last photograph. I'm not dealing with the war crimes and the whatever. Tom King's not currently writing me. I'm not dealing with any of this. That's right. I'm not helping you get your vengeance or whatever. My Speaker 2 (7:22) photographer is Jimmy Olsen, not whatever your name is. That's Speaker 1 (7:25) exactly right. Speaker 2 (7:25) Oh, he's dead. I'll lay him next to this dead dog. Speaker 1 (7:29) Nice. Nice. Good continuity. That's Speaker 2 (7:32) in the movie. Yeah, it's unrelated. Speaker 1 (7:33) That's unrelated. Speaker 2 (7:36) But anyway, the reviews have been unfortunately scathing. THR said, Zach Snyder tries indie filmmaking on for size with painfully ponderous results. The Wrap said, a vile, ugly piece of work. Wow. It's Speaker 1 (7:48) one Speaker 2 (7:48) of the worst films to ever screen at a major film festival running for 135 miserable minutes. It's a film... Oh, that's Speaker 1 (7:55) very Zach Snyder. Speaker 2 (7:56) It's a film that's overstretched. Miserable minutes. As repetitive as it is undercooked. Speaker 1 (8:01) Oh, yes. Speaker 2 (8:02) Sid Hunt at Lacker says, Zach Snyder's last photograph gestured... at the idea of voyeurism, beauty and brutality coexisting and the innate need to create, but ends up a plodding, ugly, racist, misogynistic revenge drama with no real characters and nothing to say. Speaker 1 (8:16) Wow. Speaker 2 (8:17) Stunt Meg Mike says, Guys, I shit you not. Know her purvably. Hashtag, the last photograph is peak cinema. It's Man on Fire meets Terrence Malick by way of Zack Snyder. It is one of the best gun battles. which I wish was a touch longer. And Speaker 1 (8:32) that's from Stuntman Mike. That's right. From the movie Death Proof. Correct. A fictional character. Speaker 2 (8:37) Yep. And Scream Man says, Zack Snyder's last protograph desperately wants to be profound, but it's pacing melodrama and self-seriousness make it unintentionally funny. I mean, look, because the last movies he made were the Rebel Moon movies and they were a tough watch. They Speaker 1 (8:52) really were. There was two of those? But there was technically four of those. Speaker 2 (8:55) Yeah, because there was extended super Speaker 1 (8:58) cuts. With rudeness and boobness. Speaker 1 (9:02) And dead dogs. What? Yeah. Speaker 2 (9:05) Okay. Yeah. Anyway, so you also spoke about The Dark Knight Returns, but she wants to adapt still. You said the reason why it's The Dark Knight Returns. You've got to Speaker 1 (9:14) laugh. You've got to laugh to stop from crying. You've got to laugh or Speaker 2 (9:16) you're going to cry so much. The reason why it's The Dark Knight Returns, if anyone would ever let me do it outside of the DC universe, since it's a novel that just happens to have superheroes in it, I don't think it is. It doesn't feel like a novel that happens to have superheroes in it. No. Speaker 1 (9:31) It's quite specific. Speaker 2 (9:32) Yeah. Anyway, yeah. It's as if I could do Watchmen and then The Dark Knight Returns. Those two books next to each other, to me, represent the complete cycle of superhero comic book medium. That's just word salad. I Speaker 1 (9:45) don't even know that's true. I don't think Speaker 2 (9:46) that's true either. I mean, it's... Speaker 1 (9:48) It's some comic books. Speaker 2 (9:50) Yeah, Speaker 1 (9:50) it's Speaker 2 (9:50) some comic books. It's also like the same era of comic books. So anyway. Yeah. He says, you can do no more. than those two books. Watchmen came at the beginning of the superhero movie phase, so it would be fitting to have The Dark Knight Returns come now at what I would say is possibly, and I don't want to call it the twilight, but we're down the road of the superhero movie genre, and I think audiences would understand the why of it. Speaker 1 (10:14) I mean, look, I understand the idea. Like, I guess... It Speaker 2 (10:17) was a cap on, like, a particular era of superheroes. Speaker 1 (10:21) And I guess if you went, okay, well, I guess if you... Maybe if you went, okay, well, Tim Burton's Batman, that's where it started really, and then Dark Knight Returns would be the end of that. Like you've got Keaton back somehow, and then, of course, you get Henry Cavill as Superman, I guess. But, I mean, you're inventing a – I think you're inventing your own eras there. What Speaker 2 (10:48) are Speaker 1 (10:48) you, Taylor Swift? Inventing your own eras, which Speaker 2 (10:51) I Speaker 1 (10:51) think is something that she does somehow. She's Speaker 2 (10:53) somehow Speaker 1 (10:53) doing that. Speaker 2 (10:54) Yeah. Yeah. That's Speaker 1 (10:55) cool, man. Speaker 2 (10:56) It's cool. I think Speaker 1 (10:57) it's cool. Good for you, Zack Snyder, still being cool. And we're Speaker 2 (10:59) proud of you. Speaker 1 (11:00) We're proud of you and we forgive you. I Speaker 2 (11:01) am genuinely like, I want him to succeed. And I'm sorry that if, I mean, you know, it's screened for critics. So who knows? Like I want him to make. Bunch Speaker 1 (11:09) of Speaker 2 (11:09) meanies. Yeah. I want him to make something. Bunch of Speaker 1 (11:10) biased meanies. They went in looking to hate him. Like we do. I Speaker 2 (11:15) don't hate him. Speaker 1 (11:15) No, I don't know. Speaker 2 (11:16) That's true. Speaker 1 (11:17) Yeah. Speaker 2 (11:18) I love some to none of his movies. Yes, Speaker 1 (11:21) correct. Which ones Speaker 2 (11:22) do I like? You like Dawn of the Dead. I do. I like 300. I quite like Watchmen. I like Watchmen. I like a lot of Man of Steel, but not all of it. Speaker 1 (11:29) I Speaker 2 (11:29) don't love Batman v Superman, but I do like his crazy extended Justice League movie, which is ridiculous. Agreed. I haven't seen the Owls one, and I haven't seen Sucker Punch, so I can't comment on those, but I did not like the Rebel Moon v's. They're not good, are they? No, they were Speaker 1 (11:44) horrible to Speaker 2 (11:45) look Speaker 1 (11:45) at. And again, that's him with all the... That's him with complete creative control. That's what he makes when he's not adapting an existing thing. He's making sort of Star Wars. Boring Star Wars. Boring Dune Star Wars. Even boring a Dune is what he's making. Yeah, Speaker 2 (12:01) but that's what I liked about it. Yeah, me Speaker 1 (12:02) too. Yeah. Speaker 2 (12:03) Speaking of Superman. Go Speaker 1 (12:05) on. Speaker 2 (12:06) David Coren. Oh, suddenly Speaker 1 (12:07) he's got nothing to say about Superman. I Speaker 2 (12:09) don't have anything to say. David Coren's where do you play Superman? Oh, yes. Oh, he's Speaker 1 (12:14) an Speaker 2 (12:14) authority, is he, on Speaker 1 (12:15) Superman? Speaker 2 (12:15) At Speaker 1 (12:15) the moment, Speaker 2 (12:15) he is. I think you'll Speaker 1 (12:16) find I've got a lot of long boxes. What? I don't know. I don't. It's not true at all. Like dog coffins. Yes, that's what we call them. That's what we call them here down under. Speaker 2 (12:26) We Speaker 1 (12:27) call them long boxes. We say load up your long boxes. Speaker 1 (12:34) With Arnie Merle's poodle. That's right. Chuck it in Speaker 2 (12:36) there. There's room for two. He spoke to Entertainment Tonight, which is still a thing apparently. I'm Bob Speaker 1 (12:45) Newhart and I'm Mary whoever. And I'm John Chin. Remember? Remember that was the bit? Eric Banner would be John Chin. Oh, was he? Remember that? That Speaker 2 (12:53) was where I got a lot of my Hollywood entertainment news when I was a boy. Me too, I think. In Speaker 1 (12:58) the middle of Speaker 2 (12:58) the day, I'd be like, wow, I can't believe they're... I don't know. The Skulls is coming out. Speaker 1 (13:03) Absolutely. With that guy. Pacey. Pacey. From Dawson's Creek. That's right. And whatever. I can't believe this. The Skulls? And your parents will be like, why aren't you in Speaker 2 (13:12) school? And Speaker 1 (13:13) I'll be like, na, na, na, na, na, na, na. And they'll be like, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na. People Speaker 2 (13:21) sometimes wonder why do we have so much like American pop culture knowledge? That's one of the reasons. Yeah. Speaker 1 (13:27) Because they. made us not go to school. They were like, today's lesson, stay home from school and watch entertainment tonight. Speaker 2 (13:33) Until you remember the theme. Yeah. 30 Speaker 1 (13:35) years later. No, Speaker 2 (13:36) no, Speaker 1 (13:36) no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Speaker 2 (13:42) Anyway, he said on the subject of Man of Tomorrow, which is the Superman sequel. Correct. He said the character is a little more mature. They're going to be a little bit deeper, not to mention all the crazy stuff. Nicholas Holt in the war suit. Whoa. And this, you know, it's whatever. This isn't Speaker 1 (14:00) a Speaker 2 (14:00) lot of stuff. No, it's not. But I've got another thing. Speaker 1 (14:02) Okay. This is not newsworthy. Entertainment Tonight. I guess they're not news tonight, are they? Speaker 2 (14:08) No, they're not. Exactly. But James Gunn was on threads and he was asked about, well, what are all these secret characters? Is there a Wonder Woman in this movie maybe? And he said, what secret characters? It's a movie about Alex and Clark. People shouldn't expect substantial amounts of other characters. Well, Speaker 1 (14:25) you know what I'm going to expect? Substantial amounts of other characters. Exactly. I know his game. Speaker 2 (14:31) He's not really a... Character cameo kind of guy, though. Like, to surprise you with after the fact, is he? So maybe it's not. Maybe it's not. Wonder Speaker 1 (14:40) Woman. Wow. Maybe let's get ready to get underwhelmed. Speaker 2 (14:44) Underwhelmed woman. Sure. That's your last bloody girlfriend. Speaker 1 (14:47) Come on, come on, mate. She was quite whelmed. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Right down the line. Speaker 2 (14:55) Another one with that. So, um... Speaker 1 (15:00) That's Speaker 2 (15:00) a Speaker 1 (15:00) good character, though, in the DC Universe, Underworld Woman. She's just sitting at a cafe as there are big battles happening. I've seen bigger. I've seen bigger battles. Speaker 2 (15:12) So you've been watching Lanterns? Watched the latest episode where it all bloody kicked off? Speaker 1 (15:17) Well, this is, of course. By the time this episode comes out. Speaker 2 (15:20) Episode six will be. Speaker 1 (15:21) Will be out, but we've only watched episode five. Yes, that's right. It's kicked off. Speaker 2 (15:25) That's how we've been doing it. We've got all sorts of theories. Yeah, we do. Do you want to talk about any of it here or now? Now, Speaker 1 (15:30) this is the news segment. This isn't the theories and opinions segment. That's right. We're here to talk about news and dead Speaker 2 (15:37) dogs. Speaker 1 (15:38) I mean, we do talk about dead dogs, but we won't be talking about dead dogs in the segments, what we read and what we're going to read. Speaker 2 (15:43) That comes Speaker 1 (15:43) up whenever. It'll come up in the Resident Evil review, probably in the letters. Speaker 2 (15:47) But now Speaker 1 (15:48) is not the time for opinions. Speaker 2 (15:50) Agreed. Anyway, Daniel Richman said on the topic of a Lanterns movie, because there have been things happening. People are generally well-received, I think, the show. He said, I hear a green light for Lantern season two is near. Oh, Speaker 1 (16:02) very good. Very good wordplay, Daniel Rich. I don't think he meant it. But the anchor Speaker 2 (16:07) said, sources also say writers are in for season two of Lanterns has been hard at work for more than a month, even though HBO hasn't handed out an official renewal. I feel like if the numbers are true and to be believed, then yeah, eh. True detective. Yes, so season two was a no-brainer, you know? I Speaker 1 (16:25) mean, that's assuming that Hal Jordan survives, you know, to the next season. Sure. Or if anybody wants to do it. Well, Speaker 2 (16:31) he could be a hologram. He could, that's true. There are many theories as to what and if and who is going to happen. Speaker 1 (16:37) They could put his brain into a dog. Speaker 2 (16:39) Yeah. But, Speaker 1 (16:40) I mean, how would they get the dog? Speaker 2 (16:42) Yeah. You Speaker 1 (16:44) know. Speaker 2 (16:44) Yeah. You know. Wait a minute, Mason, I just looked at the ground and I got an idea. You know that new sound you're looking for? Well, listen to this. Speaker 1 (16:55) What do you think? That's good. Who's he calling there? Because the structure of the joke, it's Marvin Berry and he's calling his cousin Chuck. Speaker 2 (17:05) He's calling, in this he's calling whoever's got Hal's brain. Okay. You know that sound you've been looking for? Speaker 1 (17:12) Sure, a dead dog. Listen to this. Speaker 1 (17:17) Okay. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it's fun to interrogate why it doesn't work. Speaker 1 (17:27) Because it's someone who's looking for the sound of a dead dog. I guess. Or just an idea of what to do with a brain. Yeah. So maybe it's that. Dr. Frankenstein. Okay. You know that sound you've been looking for? A dead dog. Listen to this. How do you feel about a season two of this? I Speaker 2 (17:43) think... Speaker 1 (17:43) And it could, you know, his cousin could be? Frankenberry. That's good. Thank you. That's good, Mason. It all works together. Do Speaker 2 (17:49) you think, though... Yes. I think I would want it to go bigger. Out in space. Yeah, whatever. Just more Green Lantern-y. Sure. You Speaker 1 (17:57) know? Yeah. More Green Lantern stuff. Speaker 2 (17:59) Yeah. I've seen some really good Green Lantern stuff. What I would say is that... You don't need to do small town detective pussies in a row. That's true. Big Speaker 1 (18:08) town detective. Exactly. What I would say, maybe we'll talk about it later, but one of the criticisms, I think, of the series, of course, is that a lot of the constructs are more small scale than you would think for, you know... compared to, say, Guy Gardner's Green Lantern constructs from the Superman movie. Speaker 2 (18:26) Yeah. Speaker 1 (18:26) But I think when, if you wanted, I think, to justify it, like, narratively, I would say that Hal's ring is kind of like a phone that he's refused to upgrade for, like, 20 years. Right, okay, Speaker 2 (18:38) yeah, yeah, yeah. Because he Speaker 1 (18:39) doesn't, for reasons, he doesn't want to keep connecting it to, you know, the central power battery or whatever. He Speaker 2 (18:44) doesn't Speaker 1 (18:44) like doing the Speaker 2 (18:45) other. Speaker 1 (18:45) That's the reason it keeps discharging, because he hasn't. Yeah. It's really outdated. Like maybe when, you know, if the reveal is going to be that Hal Jordan's ring ends up with Guy Gardner, he probably just takes it, you know, to the Telstra store and he gets the new version. And it has proper battery life Speaker 2 (19:03) and it can just do stuff. Yeah. And also Guy Gardner's ring does look different. Speaker 1 (19:09) Correct. Because he traded it where? At the Telstra store. Speaker 2 (19:12) That's right. Yeah. Anyways, it's Tom Cruise news. Tom Cruise news. For some reason, I've titled this Tom Cruise. Jump on Speaker 1 (19:20) the couch. It's time for Tom Cruise news. Remember when he did that? We should talk about that. I've titled this. I don't remember why I wrote this. I just wrote Tom Cruise. Speaker 2 (19:27) Oh, no. Now I know why. Oh, yes. Now I know why. Go on. I mean, you can think of a number of reasons why, but Matt Baloney says, he's Speaker 1 (19:35) a Speaker 2 (19:35) big Hollywood guy, reporter, Tom Cruise is Digger, which is why he's around everywhere, by the Speaker 1 (19:39) way. Speaker 2 (19:39) Correct, yes. debuted on tracking last night at $20 million domestic. Okay, that sounds bad. Speaker 1 (19:47) For Speaker 2 (19:47) NRG, which is not good enough. Also, according to the numbers, whose numbers? The numbers numbers, it cost $125 million to make. As you said last week, we will be there day one. Correct, yes. To watch him flipping and flopping around. What's the whole deal Speaker 1 (20:02) with it? Speaker 2 (20:03) Why does everyone look so weird? Yeah, why does everyone look so weird in this movie cinema? Oh, wait, it's just me and you. Speaker 1 (20:10) Oh, no. Speaker 2 (20:12) We're the weirdos. We're Speaker 1 (20:13) the Speaker 2 (20:13) weirdos. So, yeah, this was never going to do well. But it's not about that. Sometimes it's about art. Speaker 1 (20:19) Sometimes it's about acting and attempting to finally get that Oscar, you know? Yeah, Speaker 2 (20:22) exactly. How is that even possible? Speaker 1 (20:25) That he's never won an Oscar. Speaker 2 (20:26) Do you think he cares? Yeah. Is he an accolades guy? He might have been at some point. Speaker 1 (20:32) Yeah. I Speaker 2 (20:33) think Speaker 1 (20:33) maybe Hollywood's attitude as well. He was and he remains a huge box office draw and a big movie star and maybe the last movie star. The last straight Speaker 2 (20:44) movie star. He Speaker 1 (20:45) can't also have. The Speaker 2 (20:47) straightest movie star in Hollywood. Straight as an arrow. He can't also have the Speaker 1 (20:51) accolade. Like just let someone else have it. Okay. You know. Speaker 2 (20:55) All Speaker 1 (20:56) right. I think that's maybe the vibe. Anyway. Also he's weird. Yeah. which now he's trying to, you know, obviously, you know, counteract by saying nothing. Well, saying a lot of things that mean nothing. Speaker 2 (21:07) That's funny you should say that because I've got, this is the opening paragraph from a GQ interview. This is what it says. And Speaker 1 (21:14) again, are they asking him about slim fit chinos or? Speaker 2 (21:16) That's a great question. They should. On the Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, California, just down from where they shoot The Pit, is the studio's old scenic loft. the dusty industrial space where artisans once painted backdrops. Tom Cruise is standing in the centre of the room and he's happy. When you're making a movie, he says, you're doing the hands. You remember every single person that it takes to be able to make a film. This is how he talks, grandly, universally. He looks like he's conducting a tour of the lot. And stuff. Speaker 1 (21:47) He Speaker 2 (21:47) looks like Tom Cruise. And stuff. Yeah, and stuff. I guess Speaker 1 (21:50) there would have been over the course of the, yep. Speaker 2 (21:54) The article goes on to say he looks like Tom Cruise. I mean, these guys that are painting backdrops and building the sets and moving the cameras, lighting, every area of making a movie, it's light, architecture, the design, all of it, to entertain audiences, he says. The question was, do you remember using a painted backdrop? In a movie. Incredible. Speaker 1 (22:12) There it is. He didn't even say yes. Yes, I do remember that. He remembers everything, though. He remembers every bit. Speaker 2 (22:19) So I remember there was a Nerdist interview from like 10 years ago. Do you remember where he also said nothing? He started doing this. After Speaker 1 (22:27) the Speaker 2 (22:27) couch thing. After the couch Katie Holmes thing and all the Scientology shit like kicked off. So he recalibrated. Yeah. But I think after that, he's going to recalibrate again. You think so? To become... A
