Speaker 2 (0:09) Jackson, Claude and Weaver show that they need to know. We'll start your day off swirly, it's the toast. They sound amazing. Welcome back to The Toast and happy Thursday. Also happy October 1st to all who celebrate. I can't believe it's October. That just snuck up on us. The spooky season is upon us and actually as of yesterday we have confirmed our Halloween costume this year. We have. Totally Jackie's idea. Speaker 3 (0:40) I Speaker 2 (0:40) couldn't have thought of anything better in the whole world. I'm so excited. I've been like kind of ideating on what I'm going to wear. Like I'm just I'm very excited about it. I Speaker 3 (0:48) think it's going to be so great. I don't want to give anything away. We're Speaker 2 (0:51) not. Speaker 3 (0:51) I'm just going to. Leave it right there. Speaker 2 (0:53) Toast to We Never Disappoints. I'm like, this year will be no different. Speaker 3 (0:56) Yeah. Spooky season is here. We actually read a very spooky book for the Redheads. The episode comes out today at some point. So if you like that sort of vibe, you should read the book and listen along with us. We weirdly always do a spooky book in October. It's Rebecca's choice. That just Speaker 2 (1:10) feels seasonally appropriate. We do sometimes get festive with it. Yeah, we cuss a little. Yeah, we read about ghosts or not. Oh. Speaker 3 (1:19) Was it a ghost? Speaker 2 (1:21) Giving verity. Speaker 3 (1:22) It is. It is. So that was fun. So I feel like thoroughly spookified. Speaker 2 (1:27) Okay, good. I haven't gotten into the spooky season yet. For me, October 1st is obviously all about like birth and renewal and getting my $200 back. And then I feel that I can really lean into the spooky season after, like on October 2nd. You Speaker 3 (1:36) have to think about inflation and interest rates because if you gave someone Speaker 2 (1:40) a loan. Speaker 3 (1:40) What year was it? Yeah, what year was it? If Speaker 2 (1:41) you gave Speaker 3 (1:41) someone a Speaker 2 (1:42) loan in 2018 for $200, Speaker 3 (1:44) how much should they be paying you back today? Speaker 2 (1:48) What? Is $200 from 2018 worth today given inflation and stuff? Speaker 3 (1:53) But also you have to think about interest. But Speaker 2 (1:55) let's say I'm a nice person who's not charging interest. Oh, wow. Just given like the natural fluctuation of the stocks. 262. Speaker 3 (2:04) That feels right. Speaker 2 (2:05) Actually, it feels like more. It should be more. It's about a 31 % increase. It feels like it should be more. Well, chat says $262. And again, yes, of course, if I wanted to charge interest. One thing about me, at the time, I was loaning it like in good faith. Speaker 3 (2:19) My mistake. Now ask chat. And then also ask chat if you had had that $200. What Speaker 2 (2:24) about with interest? Speaker 3 (2:26) If it was a loan that I gave him. I feel like you're just not giving him enough information. Speaker 3 (2:35) He's going to respond, what about with interest? Speaker 2 (2:37) Honestly, they're giving me too much information and I don't care anymore. Happy Thursday. Speaker 3 (2:42) Happy Thursday. We've Speaker 2 (2:43) got Parjeet stories today. I'm so excited. Don't you feel like I kind of started this Pete Davidson stuff? Speaker 3 (2:48) I came to it too late, so I can't say, but yes, I could see you having started it. Speaker 2 (2:53) So I came across this Pete Davidson video completely on my own on TikTok. Speaker 2 (2:58) It pissed me off so deeply. I didn't even read the comments or anything. I actually then went to Instagram because I felt like I had more cultural cachet on Instagram. Like my comment would sort of populate higher and I left my hate comment on Instagram. And then when I went to go check back, I saw like, you know, all my fellow influencers had like started commenting and I feel like I started it. Speaker 3 (3:14) Is it getting, is it a big thing? It is. Well, good. I'm excited to talk about it. Me Speaker 2 (3:18) too. So we have a viral clip to talk about in our first story. Speaker 3 (3:22) No, actually. No, actually. We have a very exciting first story. I don't want to tease him. Speaker 2 (3:27) Oh my god, she's like giving like a silly little smile. Jackie and I played such a fun game on the way to work today. We pulled up. Of course, we drove separately. We pulled up next to one another. I actually thought for a Speaker 3 (3:35) second maybe we should drive together because it was raining so bad. It was. And I was like, maybe it'll be better. We're stronger with numbers. But then it died down a little bit. Speaker 2 (3:42) And we pulled up at a light together. And so we were playing one of my personally favorite games. I could tell you were hating every minute because you hate games. But it's like we were in separate cars, windows closed. So I'm listening to a song. I won't say what it is yet. And I'm mouthing the lyrics. And I'm like, Jackie, guess what I'm singing. It was the longest light ever. It's here insane. So, and I was giving a couple of like extra clues because I was also doing hand motion. So you guys tell me if you know what song I'm singing. This is what Jackie saw when she looked to her left. Yes. I was listening to out of the woods by Taylor Swift. Let Speaker 3 (4:19) us know if you got that. I heard her say, I could see her saying, I remember. And then I was like starting to think. And by the time you rolled out your window, I figured it. That's a good song. Oh, no, no. That's not good. That's not good. Giving ASMR. Speaker 2 (4:31) For their misophonia. Stories like. Good. Bye boys. Cutesy. High frequency vibration. Cutesy little stories. They're Speaker 3 (4:41) all over the map. Speaker 2 (4:43) We're giving Cosmo and Wanda today. Speaker 3 (4:45) I feel like we always are. Either gender reveal or Cosmo. Or Speaker 2 (4:48) matching. Remember Speaker 3 (4:49) when everyone was saying Cosmo and Wanda, you ain't slick. Speaker 2 (4:53) That was a fun time. I feel like culturally we get into phrases that we beat to death. Cosmo and Wanda was a good one. When we were giving, no, when everyone kept saying, it's giving Cher, I hated that era. It's Speaker 3 (5:04) giving, you mean? Speaker 2 (5:05) It's giving Cher. Speaker 3 (5:05) Oh, what about it? That's what started the whole Speaker 2 (5:07) it's giving thing. Shawn Mendes was like, it's giving Cher. And he started it's giving? I don't know if he started it's giving like in its totality because people were saying it before, but it's giving share then led to kind of the mainstreamization of it's giving. Speaker 3 (5:20) Okay. I, you know how I feel about it's giving. I don't mind it as a turn of phrase. Speaker 2 (5:24) Oh, I don't love it. It's just like sort of a, like a low intellectual way of saying something, you know, Speaker 3 (5:29) my feeling. And by the way, Speaker 2 (5:33) I Speaker 3 (5:33) say it Speaker 2 (5:33) all the time. My Speaker 3 (5:34) feeling is that it's not like it replaced something better. It's sort of like created a new category, created a way of saying something. That we didn't have a way of saying it before. Speaker 2 (5:44) I just don't like it. I feel like it just doesn't sound smart. You Speaker 3 (5:47) know what I don't like? And I'm scared if I say it, it's going to become a part of my vocabulary. Let's hear it. When people start everything with I fear. Speaker 2 (5:56) Okay. Actually, you know who started that? Like, okay. When I say started, like they didn't put these words together. Popularized Speaker 3 (6:02) it. Speaker 2 (6:03) Jake Shane. Speaker 3 (6:05) Really? Speaker 2 (6:06) Have Speaker 3 (6:06) you Speaker 2 (6:06) heard that viral audio where it's like, how long is the Boston Marathon? Speaker 3 (6:09) And then Speaker 2 (6:10) his friend is like, I fear all marathons are the same length, I fear, or whatever. And it went so viral, and I feel like that's really, at least for me, when I started hearing, I fear. And I agree. A sprinkle every now and then adds nice comedic twang. Yeah, but it's just like every Speaker 3 (6:25) time you answer a question, I fear yes, I fear no. Speaker 2 (6:27) Yeah. Don't Speaker 3 (6:28) live in fear. Speaker 2 (6:29) Yeah. Don't live in fear. How do you feel about Don't You Find? Speaker 3 (6:32) I love don't. Okay, okay. Of course I do. That's not internet jargon. That's toast jargon. Speaker 2 (6:37) Yeah, and there's never a piece of toast jargon I could dislike. Speaker 3 (6:39) Yeah, and that's an elevated way of saying, you know. Even Speaker 2 (6:43) when I dislike something. Speaker 3 (6:44) It's an elevated way of saying, Speaker 2 (6:44) you know. That's Speaker 3 (6:45) what Speaker 2 (6:45) I'm saying. It's giving is like a low-valuating way of saying something. What? It resembles. It feels similar to. It's like is what it is. Yeah, also low intellectual. Right, so. I feel that when I say. Speaker 3 (7:01) Don't you find? Don't Speaker 2 (7:02) you find? I sound like extremely British and intellectual. Don't you find? Yeah, that's better Speaker 3 (7:07) than you know. Speaker 2 (7:08) I know. And you know is a bad stim. I feel like I'm very aware of my like ums and totalies and likes. And you know is Speaker 3 (7:16) a bad one. Don't you find? It sort of just like speaks to a lack of Speaker 2 (7:20) confidence in what you Speaker 3 (7:20) say. Speaker 2 (7:20) I was just going Speaker 3 (7:21) to Speaker 2 (7:21) say complete insecurity. You need someone to be agreeing with you and Speaker 3 (7:24) you Speaker 2 (7:24) can't just stand Speaker 3 (7:24) on your own two feet. Speaker 2 (7:25) And that. insecurity is still there when you say don't you find, but people are so impressed with how British you are that you don't sound stupid at all. Speaker 3 (7:32) It's not until we dig deeper to the psychological meaning. Yeah. Speaker 2 (7:36) Every time I say something and I end it with, you know, it's giving like, like you have no confidence in yourself and you're like not smart or dumb. You don't even know what you just said. You're not smart or dumb. You're not smart or dumb. You're not smart. Speaker 3 (7:50) You're not dumb. Speaker 2 (7:51) You know? I like, I'm just sort of itching to talk about Pete Davidson. So if there's anything else you want to chit chat about, like, let's get it out of the way. Speaker 3 (7:57) No, we had like a cutesy Maj yesterday. Did you win at your table? Of course I did. Okay, me too. You Speaker 2 (8:04) didn't mean to ask that. Speaker 3 (8:05) Well, I guess I would know if you didn't. Well, Speaker 2 (8:08) Ben can know. Ben always says like when I play Maj and I come home like at night, he can feel instantly when I walk in the door if I've won or lost. Even though I do feel. I've kind of chilled out about Maj. Like I'm not so crazy. I used to get like so competitive and now it's like whatever. Yeah. Speaker 3 (8:23) I think it's like post aversion. You've sort of neutralized. I don't think you're like so into it in your pregnancy that like you couldn't Maj all day. You don't want to. You don't have like that same like. drive for it. Speaker 2 (8:34) There was like a true addiction before I got pregnant. I shared this on the Patreon so I haven't shared it on the podcast yet but during my first trimester I have this weird thing where I have like aversions not to food but to like random things and institutions in my first pregnancy like I had to cross the street when I was near the kosher grocery store like the place just like the idea of it made me nauseous. This summer I had a major aversion to mahjong. That's why Jackie and Ben were playing solo mahjong, Siamese mahjong the entire summer. I couldn't even look at the table like the numbers like the idea like seriously and Obviously the aversions got away, but I'm just not like obsessed with it in my pregnancy. No, Speaker 3 (9:03) you were obsessed. Like when you were down here. I was counting Speaker 2 (9:06) cards and I was forcing people to play with me. When you were Speaker 3 (9:08) down here in the winter, we were playing every day because like you require us to play every day. Speaker 2 (9:14) No, like my levels of desperation, like I literally would have picked up like a homeless person on the street and brought them into my house to come play with me. Like we need a fourth. And now like, I don't know, it just doesn't hit the same. Speaker 3 (9:23) Yeah. Speaker 2 (9:24) It's not as exciting to me. It's kind of lost, but I'm still obsessed. Speaker 3 (9:27) Yeah. Speaker 2 (9:28) I literally play every day. But in a more chill, sort of normal way. Yeah. Speaker 3 (9:32) It's better. It's better. It Speaker 2 (9:33) was getting to a point. I was really addicted to it. I was thinking about it all the time. Yeah. I think that's how people are with gambling. Speaker 3 (9:39) Relaxed a little bit and fallen into a more natural pattern. Speaker 2 (9:42) Yeah, just like natural, cool, chill Mahjong girls. Like Speaker 3 (9:44) once or twice a week. Speaker 2 (9:45) Yeah, very normal. Okay, Speaker 3 (9:48) let's get into the stories because I know you're itching to talk. Speaker 2 (9:51) I'm also itching to tell everyone about today's lead sponsor. Speaker 3 (9:53) Ooh, who we got? Speaker 2 (9:55) Just a little company known as the Amazon MGM Studios, you know, comes a gripping psychological thriller based on the bestselling novel by Colleen Hoover. So Verity, we've been talking about it all week, starring Dakota Johnson. And Lo and Ashley, a struggling writer hired to ghostwrite for renowned author Verity Crawford, who's of course played by Anne Hathaway. The job takes Lo into the remote Crawford estate where she discovers what appears to be Verity's autobiographical notes filled with disturbing confessions about her life and her husband Jeremy, who's played by Josh Hartnett. As Lo is pulled deeper into Verity's world, the lines between fiction and reality, manipulation and attraction, and opportunity and obsession begin to blur. You probably read the book and loved it.
