Speaker 8 (0:04) The Speaker 5 (0:05) city moves fast, but your vibe, that's different. Sharper, smoother, more alive. Speaker 8 (0:15) The new Speaker 5 (0:20) Honda City isn't just made to drive, it's made to feel. The new Honda City, all new vibe. Speaker 1 (0:33) This is The Run-Through. I'm Chloe Mal, and Choma is on a very well-deserved vacation this week and next. And so I am joined by Vogue's senior lifestyle and weddings editor, Liam Hess. Welcome, Liam. Thank Speaker 3 (0:47) you. So good to be here. Speaker 1 (0:48) Later in today's episode, I chat with Global Editorial Director of Vanity Fair, Mark Guaducci, about his very first September issue in his new role. The cover is a Marc Jacobs portrait painted by Anna Wyant, and he is wearing Machiavelli's Chanel. We also talked about sharing an office in our early days at Vogue over a decade ago, how that Alex Cooper story came to be, and what he actually learned from his Olivia Nuzzi fiasco. Oh, Speaker 3 (1:19) juicy. Can't wait to listen. Speaker 1 (1:21) But first, Liam, it is... A bonanza of weddings on Vogue.com. Let's start with the wedding that took up so much of our weekend. Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez. Speaker 3 (1:35) Yeah, and before we get into all the details, Chloe, can you give us a little backstory to how we even got the exclusive on that wedding? Speaker 1 (1:43) Well... I've been very interested in this wedding for a while because they are a very glamorous couple. He's one of the best soccer players in the world and also is the most followed person on Instagram. And I am not without mercenary instincts. And I... had met Georgina a few times both at Vogue World and The Met, and she came to our pre-met party and Madame Tussauds and was very excited about seeing Beyoncé, but Speaker 6 (2:12) it Speaker 1 (2:13) was a wax Beyoncé. And so from those early conversations, I'd been WhatsAppping with her and chatting with her about if there was a wedding, would Vogue be getting the exclusive? And so we've been... Discussing this for a while, and then her and her agent called me only a few weeks ago, and we started talking about what it would look like to photograph their intimate wedding because it was only the two of them and their five kids at their new home in Portugal. And we talked about a variety of photographers, but Juergen Teller, who is an avid soccer fan, and I thought someone whose sensibility would be really... unexpected and delightful for this particular assignment was someone who came up over and over again, and I was very excited that Juergen wanted to take this on. And so Juergen Teller spent an intimate day at home with them from their morning workout at the gym before the wedding to Georgina draped in... Many, many carats of diamonds getting ready for the big day to their Demna-designed Gucci outfits. It has a very sort of meet-cute story. They got married on the 10th anniversary of the day they met, which was when Ronaldo walked into the Gucci Madrid store and Georgina was the 22-year-old salesperson. And so it felt very fitting that Gucci... designed both, not only their outfits, but all five children's outfits. There's a great photo of the slew of Gucci footwear that everyone in the family was wearing. Speaker 3 (3:49) Right. So it was a real full circle moment for them, I guess. Speaker 1 (3:51) Yes, exactly. Speaker 3 (3:52) And I loved in the story that accompanied it by the great Gabby Wood, you know, they were sort of talking about how they wanted it to be almost like a normal day, you know, because it's just about them celebrating their love for each other. Obviously, it's also an incredibly special day, but I think Jürgen's photos really capture that quite humorously and fondly and sweetly. I love the photo of her with the kettlebell during the morning workout, but her arm is just dripping in Chopard diamonds. It's really Speaker 6 (4:23) workout goals. Yeah, yeah. Speaker 1 (4:28) Very excited about that. And it felt like a nice diptych with the other wedding of the weekend, which was a star-studded Malibu affair. Tell us about our other wedding of the weekend. Speaker 3 (4:41) Yeah, so we have Jordan Woods, who's a model and entrepreneur, and then Carl Anthony Towns, also known as... K-A-T, I believe. Kat. Kat. Oh, my God. That's so embarrassing. I don't follow basketball. I'm sorry. Speaker 1 (4:55) You're like Josh O'Connor when he's like, what are the Knicks? Basketball. Speaker 3 (4:58) Essentially, yes. But anyway, as we know, you know, the Knicks have been having one hell of a year, and he is one of the most sort of notable players, I believe. So there's a lot of interest, and a lot of the Knicks attended this wedding. Speaker 1 (5:10) I know. Liam kept referring to this as Jordan Wood's wedding. I was like, Liam. In New York City, this is also Carl Anthony Towns' wedding. Speaker 3 (5:18) It's a bit of a blind spot for me, I'm afraid, basketball. But yeah, it's a beautiful wedding in Malibu. I thought Jordan Speaker 6 (5:27) looked Speaker 1 (5:27) so beautiful. Speaker 3 (5:28) She Speaker 6 (5:28) looked Speaker 3 (5:28) stunning, yeah, wearing Danielle Frankel, who we love. Can you describe Speaker 1 (5:31) the dress? Because it had this sort of dramatic, it was quite classic, but also had this dramatic neck scarf that kind of went backward. Speaker 3 (5:38) Yeah, I guess it's sort of, you know, Danielle Frankel, we... seem to, you know, a lot of high-profile brides whose weddings that we've published, they love to work with her because I think she does have that sensibility of, you know, this kind of couture-level execution that you expect from bridal wear, but it never feels, like, fusty or whatever. There's always a little twist. There's always something that feels a little unexpected, and I thought, yeah, that was a very cool detail across the neckline. Speaker 1 (6:04) And it was, I mean, I saw all over the tabloids this weekend from various paparazzi shots that it was quite a star-studded lineup from Timothy and Kylie to Justin and Hailey Bieber to Knicks front row fans. Ben Stiller. I Speaker 3 (6:20) know that was my favorite cameo, I have to say. I think when I was scrolling through the gallery and his face popped up, I was like, oh, what are you doing here? But yeah. Speaker 1 (6:28) Someone posed a picture of him like filming the ceremony horizontally on his phone. It was like, is this for the next documentary he's making? Speaker 8 (6:37) Could be, could be. Speaker 1 (6:39) So yes, I'm very excited about that wedding, which is very... Speaker 1 (6:44) And then Tallulah Willis, Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughter got married in Sun Valley, Idaho, which was, I thought, a really touching, lovely ceremony and wedding. And that also got a lot of interest and attention from people. So I was excited about that. Speaker 3 (6:59) I liked that one as well. I think it was one of those weddings where you really see the personality of the bride, like, shine through in every aspect, you know. She's an artist and she's very creative and a little kooky, but in a sort of very... delightful, charming way. And you could see that in, yeah, every aspect of the day. And Speaker 1 (7:16) then what other weddings do you have on the docket? Because I feel like it's just a Speaker 3 (7:20) slew. Yeah. So we also just published our wonderful colleague Adam Baidawi's wedding to Alex Markson. They got married in New York City, and it's sort of fun because, you know, Adam recently took up the post of global editorial director at GQ and moved from London to New York. And so they sort of had this transatlantic-themed wedding, although it also looked to me like a real classic New York City wedding. They married at City Hall. They sort of stopped to... Speaker 3 (7:56) What's the word? How do I say this? I need your basketball expertise. Like, shoot some hoops. Speaker 1 (8:01) I'm sorry, what? Speaker 3 (8:02) They stopped to shoot some hoops. Speaker 1 (8:04) Adam Badawi? Speaker 3 (8:05) Yeah. On his wedding day, they stopped in a basketball court. Huh. Speaker 1 (8:09) And Speaker 3 (8:09) then they stopped for pizza slices. Oh, Speaker 1 (8:12) wow. Yeah, Speaker 3 (8:13) so it's very sort of... Speaker 1 (8:14) Classic New York experience. Speaker 3 (8:15) Quintessential New York, yeah. We Speaker 1 (8:17) love that for them. And he's Speaker 3 (8:18) wearing Dunhill, classic English brand, and she wore Daniel Frankel. I love Speaker 1 (8:23) big Danielle moment. Speaker 3 (8:25) Also, Speaker 1 (8:26) I mean, it's so fun for me when we get the final fitting videos because I think it's just such an intimate moment in a lot of brides' lives with their families often. And we had Tallulah Willis with Demi and her sisters at Balenciaga. Having her Balenciaga dress fitting at the Chateau Marmont with Demi and her sisters, it was one of Pierpaolo Piccioli's first wedding dresses for the house. There was a really sweet moment with Bruce Willis, her father. So, yes, I've been very excited to see all of these weddings coming through. We also have a very... New York City fashion wedding coming up. Danielle Kallmeyer and her wife got married last weekend also, the same day as Jordan and Karl-Anthony Townes, but a very different type of affair, more... artsy Hamptons vibe. So yeah, very excited to see all the different ways people are celebrating their summer love. Speaker 3 (9:27) Yeah, they're still coming thick and fast. We've got plenty more coming through September as well. Speaker 1 (9:32) No Speaker 3 (9:32) spoilers, but yeah, we have some very exciting weddings coming up. Speaker 1 (9:36) In other news, it is Doge Week at Vogue. We've already discussed our... Very important dog wedding mazel tov to the bride and groom. I really loved how Irene Kim wrote this like a classic Vogue wedding. Speaker 3 (9:53) I thought that was very funny. She really hit all the beats of like our sort of Vogue wedding story formula. Speaker 1 (9:58) What were some of those? Speaker 3 (10:00) You know, we sort of, we start with a meet cute. We go into the engagement. We sort of, I loved her talking about, you know, there was only one. option for designers and that was susan alexandra and uh and rachel Speaker 1 (10:16) and rachel Speaker 3 (10:17) antonoff yeah um yeah sort of written as if the dogs themselves had made those decisions and traveled to the atelier and attended the fittings well they Speaker 1 (10:26) did in fact well Speaker 3 (10:27) i guess they did tuxedo had a Speaker 1 (10:28) fitting with a little help yeah yeah Speaker 3 (10:30) and they also are both uh well they're nepo babies they're nepo dogs right they are Speaker 1 (10:35) nepo dogs We love that. Speaker 3 (10:37) Yeah. Speaker 1 (10:39) As evidenced by our September cover. Yes, half of our covers were released Tuesday, and the others were released yesterday, Wednesday. Mikael Bridges, Tori Burch, Charles Melton, Serena Williams all came out on Wednesday. I have to say, I find Charles Melton and Mikael Doeg shoots very charming. Speaker 3 (11:01) Is that because they're in them as well? Speaker 1 (11:02) That's right. Speaker 3 (11:04) Do you have a... particular favorite or is it I mean I do Speaker 1 (11:08) Bad Bunny had been touring all summer and we'd been talking about doing Doge with him for a while this was really a passion project of Sergio Cletnoi our entertainment director and finally Benito got back to Puerto Rico and he said I will do this but I need to creative direct it myself and he Speaker 1 (11:30) decided he had a vision that he and Sansa, his beagle, would be eating pasta like Lady and the Tramp together. And that is where you see Sansa. And honestly, she looks very well-behaved. I've never known beagles to be so, but good for the two of them. So I love Sansa. I also, I love how absolutely messy Lena Dunham's dogs are. Corny Shaw and Ingrid are just... Real scruff balls. They've got so much personality, yeah. So I was delighted about seeing them. And... They Speaker 3 (12:04) always say, like, never work with children or animals, right? Speaker 1 (12:08) Did you Speaker 3 (12:08) hear of any mishaps on set with any of these dogs? Speaker 1 (12:11) That's Speaker 3 (12:11) a good question. Speaker 1 (12:11) I didn't hear any dog on set dramas. But I know that for our staff dog shoot, where we photographed staff dogs with various dog accessories, dog beds, dog leashes. And also our own Doge merch collaborations, Alex Mill, Doge Totes, and J.Crew, Doge Hats, and the Henry Holland Doge beautiful porcelain water bowls. Fabulous. It was quite a circus. Yeah. Speaker 3 (12:41) Actually, I heard one of them ate like a whole pound of turkey or something, right? Speaker 1 (12:46) I didn't hear Speaker 4 (12:47) that. Speaker 1 (12:48) Who was the culprit? Speaker 3 (12:50) I actually can't remember. It was definitely Sidney's dog. Speaker 1 (12:54) All right. Liam, I want to know, it's such a treat having Liam in the studio. He's here for a little late summer visit in his peak wedding moment. Speaker 1 (13:06) Liam, what are you listening to right now? Because I feel like we're in an end of summer push. Speaker 3 (13:11) Yeah, I've been listening sort of on repeat, actually, to the new Phoebe Bridges album that came out last week, which... Much Speaker 1 (13:18) discussed in the office. Much discussed. People Speaker 3 (13:19) are Speaker 1 (13:19) very excited about this. Speaker 3 (13:21) Yeah, and I think she sort of had a real breakout moment with her previous album, Punisher, which I think was released in... It was released during the pandemic. Speaker 1 (13:30) Long time ago. I feel like it was... five or six years ago. Yeah, Speaker 3 (13:32) yeah, yeah. And I think rather than sort of, you know, rush the follow-up or try and capitalize on that moment, she did sort of take her time and has worked with a really incredible range of collaborators. And yeah, the album's just, it's sort of, it's so kind of lush and exquisite and it just sounds so amazing. You can sort of put... your headphones in and totally get lost in the world that she's created and she's such a brilliant lyricist as well and i think obviously a lot of the chatter has been around um some of her quite frank lyrics about past relationships which obviously we know the internet loves to go wild over and sort of pick apart how that might relate to her relationships with paul mescal and now with beau burnham but i think even if you're not approaching it through that sort of slightly intrusive detective-like lens, there's still so much to enjoy in that record. And then my other, I've also been really loving the new Troye Sivan song and video. Speaker 1 (14:35) The Speaker 3 (14:35) video stars Nicole Kidman. Oh, wow. Speaker 1 (14:39) I missed this moment. Speaker 3 (14:40) Oh, you've Speaker 1 (14:40) got Speaker 3 (14:40) to watch it. Oh, wow. It's very cool. And I think it's really nice. The song is sort of, you know, his last album was very much about his sort of queerness and his sexual and it was his sexuality and um and this song is sort of all about it's sort of like a tribute to all the women in his life um and it's very sweet including Speaker 1 (14:59) nicole Speaker 3 (15:00) including nicole yeah um yeah and it's just like it feels like a nice moment you know there's not enough male pop stars doing that so Speaker 1 (15:09) true yeah Speaker 3 (15:10) um Speaker 1 (15:13) I have been really enjoying people's deep dive on the new Rachel Cusk novel. Oh, yeah. That people, many people believe it's about Natalie Portman, even though Rachel Cusk, I now have learned, has only met Natalie Portman a handful of times and
