Speaker 1 (0:00) But they said, well, you can't do that. And I said, I am doing it. And I think that I even did this. I leaned forward and enunciated my syllables. I said, I am doing it. You can't tell me what I can't do because I am doing it. That's gravitas. I didn't get emotional, but I made my point. I made it clear. Right. The gravitas means that you're not seeking approval. For every little thing, that you make decisions and you have confidence in making those decisions. Have you ever noticed that when some people talk, everybody stops to listen? Or when they walk in a room, everyone turns to look at them. And yet they don't dominate the room, but people just naturally pay attention to them. That's called gravitas. Right. Gravitas comes from the Latin word gravis, which means weight. Right. And so the person with gravitas brings a weight into the room with that when they come in. They bring the mission. They bring understanding. They bring confidence. Right. Speaker 1 (1:31) This quality, when she walks into the room, people understand that they trust her judgment. They know that he can handle this. And people think that's someone that I can follow. Speaker 1 (1:52) But notice that what gravitas isn't, it isn't the person that talks the most. It's not the person who dominates the conversation. It's not the person that has the words that make them sound the smartest. And some people get gravitas and charisma mixed up. Charisma is... Something that attracts attention. Gravitas attracts confidence. There's a difference. Charisma makes people like you. Gravitas makes people trust you. Speaker 1 (2:37) The best executives have both charisma and gravitas. Okay. And gravitas is probably the most important component of executive presence, which goes along with communication skills and how you look. Right. And research, however, consistently shows. that the most important part of executive presence is gravitas. Before I get started, I wanted to speak to the woman who knows she's meant for more. What they were doing is they were going to receive a presentation from... a company that wanted to do business with us. But they weren't sure, my team, they weren't sure about how they should act. What if they're asked this? What if that happens? So I decided to call a meeting, right, and get everybody together and go over this. Speaker 1 (4:24) So we were in a hotel having these meetings. So we went to a boardroom. We had the meeting. And I said, this is a meeting where we're going to discuss some of the risks involved with what we're going to do. And this is what we're going to do. We're going to do what we do. Right? Maybe this was part charisma in me. But it was that I had confidence in the team. I had confidence in them. They had nothing to fear. So Gravitas is coming into the room with confidence, knowing that you're going to be successful. Speaker 1 (5:09) Don't go overboard. Gravitas isn't arrogance. It's not overconfidence.
