Time for the California Crime Blotter. And the first edition of today's blotter takes us to the San Fernando Valley. You Speaker 4 (1:24) know, the area that Karen Bass and Nithya Raman keep saying that crime is at historic lows, that every single week we've got new burglary stories in the San Fernando Valley. Well, here's a burglary suspect that was hiding in a dumpster. Speaker 4 (1:43) For more, here is CBS LA. Speaker 1 (1:45) New at 8 tonight, a woman comes face-to-face with a burglar inside her home. She manages to get away and neighbors take down the suspect. That suspect in the hospital tonight accused of burglary. CBS LA's Nicole Comstock live tonight in Sherman Oaks speaking with those neighbors. I Speaker 4 (2:02) like that this guy's in some sort of custody, not because LAPD got there on time, but because the neighbors gave him a beating. Speaker 2 (2:11) It looks like he trashed her place, too. So if he got a beating from the neighbors, it looks like he deserved it. Speaker 1 (2:17) Cole? Speaker 5 (2:20) Yeah, and you know, the victim's daughter told me off camera, thankfully her mom is okay, but she's still pretty shaken up, and that that guy forced himself inside her mom's apartment last night and locked the door behind him. Now, neighbors, as you mentioned, were able to catch up to this guy, but before that, they say they took video of him crawling out of a dumpster. Speaker 2 (2:41) Now, why couldn't he have been crushed? Speaker 4 (2:44) Oh, you mean like the guy in San Francisco? Speaker 2 (2:46) Yes. Speaker 1 (2:51) I don't know what you're on, bro, but you got to get out of here. Speaker 5 (2:53) Covered in leaves, stuck in a dumpster, and speaking incoherently. Oh, Speaker 2 (2:58) my. Well, you know, the high cost of housing in California is a hell of a problem. Speaker 4 (3:03) There is video of this person high on God knows what crawling around the dumpster. You got to get online right now and see this at johnnydontlike.com. Speaker 1 (3:13) Got to get out, bro. Speaker 5 (3:14) That's how neighbors described the burglary suspect they helped catch last night in Sherman Oaks. Speaker 1 (3:19) Instantly, I thought of like Oscar the Grouch. Speaker 2 (3:26) Well, that's a way of describing it. Speaker 4 (3:28) Well, he was covered in green and he was in the trash can. Accurate. Speaker 1 (3:32) Sesame Street, because he just like pops out with all this, you know, all these leaves on him and stuff. He was in another world down there. I don't know what you're on, dog, but you gotta take it down the street, bro. Speaker 4 (3:43) Isn't it fun how we legalize drugs in California? Speaker 2 (3:47) If I were a neighbor and I saw that guy who just robbed that woman's apartment in that dumpster. I don't think I would try to keep them there until the cops showed up. You know what I would have done? Speaker 4 (4:00) What's that? Speaker 2 (4:00) I would have called the trash company and said, you really need to come pick this up right now. Bring your truck, empty the dumpster into the truck, and then smash it. Speaker 5 (4:12) Says he first spotted the guy breaking into cars, then he dove into the dumpster. Speaker 1 (4:16) He tried to get out for a second and then fell back in. Speaker 2 (4:24) That's got to be meth, right? Speaker 4 (4:26) No, this is more than meth. No, this is way more than math. This could be, I would say it's PCP, but usually PCP, you also start taking your clothes off. This guy's on bath salts. I don't know. Speaker 1 (4:41) And then eventually came back out and ran down the street up to the neighbor's house and started banging on their door. Hey, bro, that's not your house, dog. Come on, fool. You got to get down the street. Crimes of Speaker 4 (4:54) historic lows, huh? Speaker 2 (4:55) Oh, yeah. Look at this bedroom community. Safer than the 1950s? Speaker 5 (5:01) Followed him along with his neighbor, Charon Andreas. They say he tried to get into several apartments and eventually did. Speaker 4 (5:08) Pounded on an older lady's door and she opened it and he pushed his way into the apartment. Speaker 5 (5:13) This is why Speaker 4 (5:14) you got to have a door, a video camera doorbell these days. Also, someone's pounding on your door. The last thing you should ever do is open it. Speaker 2 (5:22) Especially if you're an elderly woman by yourself. Do not allow crackheads to come into your house. Speaker 4 (5:29) Oh, could be crack. Crack is back. Speaker 5 (5:33) Victim's daughter tells me the suspect locked the door behind him and started breaking things. Are you in here? But her mom was able to get out and go hide at a neighbor's place. And Chorin and another neighbor caught up with him in the garage. Speaker 1 (5:47) We're like, yo, the police are coming. Stay still. And then he started coming at us. So which then I pepper sprayed him. Hell yeah. Speaker 4 (5:57) Gotta love some vigilante justice when we get it. Well, there's gotta be some punishment because Speaker 2 (6:02) once they send him to the police station, quote unquote accountability is to let him out immediately. Yep. Speaker 1 (6:08) I Speaker 2 (6:09) think I'm on the ground Speaker 1 (6:10) until the police came. Speaker 5 (6:11) The victim's daughter says the LAPD got there fast in about seven minutes. What'd you take, bro? Speaker 2 (6:24) It's gotta be more than cocaine. Speaker 4 (6:28) Yeah. I mean, if he did a line of something that was cut with God knows what, maybe he could say cocaine. Seems like crack his back and crack his whack. Speaker 1 (6:43) Cocaine? Speaker 4 (6:43) The Speaker 5 (6:44) Good Samaritans say they tried to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Speaker 1 (6:47) When somebody starts interacting. Speaker 4 (6:48) That's not how people act when they're on cocaine. You want to see how people act when they're on cocaine? Look at some videos of when Gavin Newsom was mayor. Allegedly. Speaker 1 (6:59) With other people and maybe put someone else in danger. Speaker 5 (7:03) But they knew they had to do something before someone got hurt. Speaker 1 (7:07) It could have been really bad. This fool is tripping on something. Speaker 5 (7:13) Now the victim's daughter says they also found a brick inside their mom's apartment after the guy left the place. So they don't know what he possibly could have been intending to do with that. They think he was hiding it on his way inside. Speaker 2 (7:25) That's his special brick. Yeah, he was going to hit her right in the coconut. Speaker 5 (7:29) They say they talked with police and thought that this guy was going to be charged with burglary and assault. But the LAPD tells us he was just charged with burglary. Of Speaker 2 (7:38) course. Wait a minute. He entered an elderly woman's house with a deadly weapon. How is it just burglary? You see, this is the problem. Speaker 2 (7:50) This is what they do that allows these people to be released because a judge sees that and they go, okay, it's burglary. He's got drug problems. Let him out. Hopefully his family will do something about it. But if he was in a woman's unit with a deadly weapon, that's a different story. Speaker 4 (8:08) Well, not only that, but typically burglary means that nobody was home. This is a home invasion robbery. What, because he locked her out, now it's a burglary? That is one hell of a technicality. Speaker 5 (8:21) We'll send it back to you in the studio. Speaker 4 (8:24) This is why another election you have to pay attention to because this is not a felony case. So this wouldn't be a Nathan Hockman thing. This is a L.A. city thing. You really got to pay attention to who's on the ballot for city attorney. You got two options, a DSA nut named Marissa Roy or John McKinney, who was one of the guys that ran against George Gascon. I'm not saying who you should vote for, but I think that's all you need to know. Speaker 2 (8:50) Vote for McKinney. I'll say it. There you go. All right, Randy, it's time to reopen the California crime blotter. He's the cashier. He's dummy. Speaker 1 (9:02) We Speaker 2 (9:02) couldn't make this stuff up if we tried. I said, hell no, Speaker 1 (9:07) baby boy. Let me get up on out of here. Speaker 2 (9:11) It's the California crime blotter. And this edition of The Blotter involves a food I happen to like a lot and one that you can buy everywhere in Argentina. Of course, I'm talking about empanadas. Well, Speaker 4 (9:25) Johnny, we're going back to the Oakland empanada shop that we've already visited earlier this year as a woman working at the empanada shop got attacked by a crazy person. Speaker 2 (9:37) Oh, no. Speaker 4 (9:39) This is the same empanada shop that wanted to host watch parties for the World Cup in Oakland, and someone stole their big screen TV. Speaker 4 (9:49) And this doesn't really matter, but just on the other side of the Bay Bridge at the Ferry Building is a fantastic empanada shop in San Francisco. Just saying. For more, here's KTVU. Speaker 3 (10:00) Attack at a West Oakland restaurant caught Speaker 1 (10:02) on video.
