Speaker 8 (0:00) This is an iHeart Podcast. Guaranteed human. I survived nine months in captivity, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are The Survivor Files. Every week, I'm with survivors who lived through the unthinkable, abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. These are stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. If Speaker 5 (0:36) your bookshelf and your For You page are equally important to your personality, welcome home. Pro Society is a weekly podcast that's part book club, part group chat for anyone who thinks Pride and Prejudice and Love Island deserve the same level of discourse. Each week, we're connecting the dots between books, the internet, and pop culture with your favorite writers, book talk creators, and plenty of overthought opinions. Yeah, I'm obsessed. I'm obsessed. Listen to Pro Society on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Did you hear the new episode Speaker 8 (1:08) of the Hey Jonas Speaker 5 (1:08) podcast? For Kristoff. They said, okay, what are you going to be singing today? I said, I don't know. That must Speaker 5 (1:21) have been why you didn't get it. Well, you probably won. Plus, John Stamos, Hayden Christensen from Star Wars, and more. And Speaker 4 (1:27) I guess I can share that, uh... Speaker 2 (2:21) in the spirit where it's on the to the chill stuff and the in-between sometimes the best thing you can do is just stop Speaker 4 (2:33) This is Feeling Things with Amy and Kat. Speaker 1 (2:37) Happy Tuesday. Welcome to Feeling Things. I'm Amy. And I'm Kat. And my feeling of the day is excited times two. Okay. And some gratitude mixed in. Ooh. Excited, number one. Speaker 3 (2:47) I finished The Calamity Club, and it is, I am, I think I'm just going to say it. It's my favorite book of the year so far. It might be better than The Nightingale to me, and that's hard because that was my favorite book of the year. What? Speaker 1 (3:02) Yeah. Speaker 3 (3:03) It is so good. It makes me wish that, you know, a long, long time ago, we talked about starting a little bit of a book club and then we never did. And that would be fun and all, but it really makes me wish that we had a feeling things book club so we could all hop on our feeling things book club zoom together and talk about this book. Speaker 2 (3:19) Can you give me a, what is it about? Is it historical fiction or is it about? Yeah, I would say, yeah, Speaker 3 (3:24) it's fiction and yeah. And it's historical? Speaker 2 (3:27) It Speaker 3 (3:27) is. You learn things about how it was. Speaker 1 (3:32) When? Like the 60s or so. 50s when now I don't have the exact. I mean. You're Speaker 2 (3:41) like when I was like Winter Garden is my favorite book and I had no idea what war it was about. And Speaker 1 (3:45) you're like I'm pretty sure it's about the Great Depression. Wait, what war was it? World War II. World Speaker 3 (3:53) War II. Speaker 1 (3:53) World War II. Speaker 3 (3:56) Well, that's what I love. I like World War II historical fiction stories, and that's why I loved The Nightingale so much, and that one was going to be hard to beat. Maybe I'll make these neck and neck because I hate not having The Nightingale as my favorite for this year, but this book is so Speaker 1 (4:12) good. The author of it, she also wrote The Help. Oh. Is this going to be, do you think this is going to be a movie one day? I sure hope so because The Help was a movie, and it was so Speaker 3 (4:22) great. Love this book. Now, if you've been listening to the podcast for a while, you know that I like to read a book. I have the physical copy and I listen on audible because of my dyslexia. It's just very helpful for me. I really enjoyed reading this, but let me tell you one of the voice actors for the audio book for the character, Meg, the little girl. So cute. I mean her little accent, I hear it in my head right now and it's just so cute. They did such a great job. So I highly recommend listening Speaker 1 (4:52) to it. So they had different people. It wasn't the same person reading and doing voices. They had two different. Speaker 3 (4:58) I believe it was Speaker 2 (4:59) two Speaker 1 (4:59) different voice actors. If not, that person is way talented. Speaker 2 (5:03) Okay. Well, shoot. I just started a new book. I should have started this one. I started the Alice Network today, which is also about World War II. Speaker 1 (5:10) Oh, well, go ahead and finish that one. Calamity Club will be here for you. Okay. You're excited at times, too? Excited Speaker 3 (5:16) number two is we have a really cool partnership with Hasbro coming up. this episode and then the next seven after this. So for the next several weeks, we have a fun surprise and we've got an email that we're going to read in a little bit that I'm just filled with joy and gratitude for this whole thing because there's some giveaways to it. We're going to be honoring teachers and we're going to put a call to action for those of you listening. Like if you have a teacher in your life you want to write in about. So I'm very excited for the kickoff of this. We'll call it the Hasbro season here. And so that's, yeah, gratitude and excitement and joy for that. We're Speaker 2 (5:55) going to Speaker 3 (5:55) share all that, yeah. So I keep adding more feelings. What Speaker 2 (5:58) about you? Well, I'm feeling gratitude too for that. And also I just came off the heels of my baby shower. Speaker 2 (6:08) We didn't share too much about this, but I had a lot of anxiety about my baby shower. Oh, yeah, she did. Speaker 1 (6:15) And it was happening during our trip to Arizona. I mean, we're at Canyon Ranch. We're trying to relax. And Kat is Speaker 3 (6:25) stressing out about her baby shower. I'm honestly glad I was there because I feel like I was able to just. Speaker 2 (6:32) matter of fact put a bow Speaker 1 (6:33) on it and be like we're done yeah Speaker 2 (6:36) the day before our trip i think i slept like two hours and you were very you it you not being my family i think helped i agree you weren't just like saying what i they wanted me to hear kind of thing anyway i had a lot of anxiety about it and one of my anxieties was that it would be boring Speaker 2 (6:57) And it Speaker 1 (6:58) was a couple shower. Yes. Well, my Speaker 2 (7:00) thing with baby showers, part of it is I just feel like I just had my wedding season. I just asked a lot of people. So I felt like I was asking a lot of people. Then the other part was I didn't want people to be like, oh, I have to go to a baby shower, you know, which some people are like that. And so I was like, we're going to have a couple shower. And then I was like, but then the guys are going to think that. So how do we make it fun? And Patrick's like, Catherine, it's just like. asking our friends to come hang out with us. You don't overthink that. And we're giving them food and drinks. I couldn't get it through my head. Guys, it was amazing. It was so fun. It went by so fast. The food was great. The desserts. So cute. The best part. Yeah. So good. I still have some at my house. It was so much fun. And the games. The games were really good. Speaker 1 (7:49) I was in charge of the games. Yeah. I took Hasbro games. Just kidding. Although we do have. Speaker 3 (7:57) Some here that we'll talk about. But no, I took some games. But you know what I realized is that my vision is getting so bad. When I printed out, did you see I was really struggling to read? Because I had to read Speaker 1 (8:07) some stuff off a card. And the font was so small. And I'm in front of, I think there was 70 people there. Yeah, there's a lot of people. And Speaker 3 (8:14) because Kat's from Nashville area, so all of your family is here. And Patrick's from here too. So there's just a lot of people that want to celebrate baby Zoe, which now we can say the name. Speaker 1 (8:27) Yay. And I've been holding that in because some episodes I'm like, oh, shoot. Can we say the name? You almost said it. I think last week. But who cares? Whatever. It's out there. Zoe Elizabeth, Speaker 3 (8:39) which Speaker 2 (8:40) is so cute. Update, guys. I did not name her after me. Right. Because I know that was a thing. Zoe Elizabeth is not your name. Encourage me to do that. And they thought it was really cute. We did. We did not. And I'm OK with that. I love her name. Yes. It's so precious. Speaker 3 (8:54) I could not see. And I didn't bring my reading glasses because I'm going to a baby shower. Why would I need? And then I was like, ah. So I was struggling up there. But I thought the games did go well. They went off without a hitch. What would you say? They were a Speaker 1 (9:12) hit. They were a hit. People said, which I'm like, people could just say nothing. They could just say, hey, you know, good to see you. But they were like, hey, those were fun games, you know? So I feel like it was sincere. They did that. Okay. They said they're like, Speaker 3 (9:27) that was really cute. We like that. So I will say the games we played were mom or dad, which y'all can Google these. If you've got a baby shower coming up, it's called mommy or daddy, but I changed it to mom or dad. Cause I felt weird when I did that Speaker 1 (9:40) one for Caitlin and Bobby's baby shower. It felt weird saying mommy and daddy that many times in a row. So I changed it to mom and dad. And then I learned from Patrick. cat's husband he's like well you know i still call my dad daddy and i was like what you're a 30 year old 30 something you're old you're a 33 year old man and you might be Speaker 2 (10:04) 34 i don't know how old well Speaker 1 (10:06) i felt so i felt so bad because he's like well why'd you change it i still call my dad daddy Speaker 1 (10:17) felt like I was defending him. I was like, oh, well, it's just more Speaker 3 (10:19) so that I was having to say mommy and daddy a lot because the game is 15 questions. I would have loved Speaker 2 (10:26) for you to be in front of everybody calling Patrick daddy. I think that would have been Speaker 1 (10:30) great. I feel like that's what he expects Zoe to do. Daddy. She Speaker 2 (10:35) will Speaker 1 (10:35) call him daddy until she's at an Speaker 2 (10:37) appropriate age to Speaker 1 (10:38) switch to dad. No, no. He's 33. Your husband is 33 and calls his dad daddy. I know. Literally when he... calls him it says daddy on his phone okay that's what i said i said patrick tell me this Speaker 3 (10:52) like so you just need to call your dad real quick what do you what let's act this out and he's like hey daddy i was like what like just any old not just like oh but it is a little bit of southern to it because like my cousins from alabama they say mama and daddy like that doesn't sound as weird to me mama and daddy doesn't sound as weird to me as daddy you Speaker 2 (11:15) know Yeah, it's all weird. I think it's weird. This is one of my favorite fun facts to bring up in front of people because he has no shame in it. No. Obviously. Anyway, yeah, my husband does that. Zoe will not be calling. But also it's different when a girl does it. This is a little sexist, I guess, but it does feel different if I could not call my dad daddy. I just almost said like it would be different if I call my dad daddy. If I said, hey, daddy, I think my dad would be like, who are you talking to? Right. Speaker 1 (11:49) Yeah. I feel like it. Speaker 2 (11:52) I think it's weird for guys or girls. I have a friend that calls her dad daddy, but like also reminds me of Righteous Gemstones because they call their dad Diddy. Yes. Speaker 1 (12:02) The southern mama, daddy. Yeah. OK, well, let me share the games just so we can at least. OK. Because I know people are like, I have a baby shower coming up. I want to know what those fun games are that people complimented. Speaker 8 (12:22) When I was 14 years old, I was kidnapped and held captive for nine months. I survived, and I've spent my life exploring how other people survive what should have destroyed them. I'm Elizabeth Smart, and these are The Survivor Files. I just remember Speaker 1 (12:39) this low, taunting voice next to my ear saying, shut up, don't say anything. Speaker 8 (12:46) Every week, I'm with survivors who live through the unthinkable. I knew if he woke up, without a doubt, he was going to hurt me. I started feeling that there was someone at the end of my bed, and I just started screaming. They are abducted, stalked, controlled, and nearly silenced. But these aren't stories about what's taken from them. They're stories about what it takes to make it out alive. Listen to The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 3 (13:25) Okay, mom or dad, then we did Pass the Present, which you can Google. Speaker 2 (13:29) That Speaker 3 (13:30) was your favorite. My favorite. I love that. Pass the Present is so fun, and it's a little rhyme. And I'm sure there are multiple iterations, but you can just pick whichever one you like. And then... Speaker 1 (13:40) And Speaker 2 (13:41) you get to know, like, it's a rhyme that will say, like... Who's known the mom the longest? So everybody gets to learn or like who has the most kids or it's cute and you get to like know fun. Who traveled the farthest? Who calls their dad daddy? You should have Speaker 3 (13:55) added that. I should have added that. I should have. And then the other one wasn't so much a game. It was more of an activity. And we had blank diapers and I got cute Sharpies and everybody wrote y'all cute little notes on the diaper. So when you're changing the baby's diaper late night, you've got a little funny note to read from your friends. So there you go. Good job. Speaker 1 (14:13) Shower Speaker 3 (14:13) games, Speaker 1 (14:14) you're Speaker 3 (14:14) welcome. Speaker 1 (14:15) I Speaker 2 (14:15) was worried about the activities because I didn't want it to be cheesy and weird. And if you, too, are worried about that, these are great. Also, I'm having a really hard time not reading the diapers yet. I had to put them up in the closet where I can't reach. Are you going to hide them? Speaker 1 (14:31) Yes. They want to know what people wrote. I know. Speaker 2 (14:34) But then Speaker 1 (14:34) that ruins the point. They're really cute. Speaking of you becoming a mom, I have a parent tip of the day. I'll take Speaker 3 (14:42) it. And Speaker 1 (14:42) this Speaker 3 (14:42) is something that came up with me recently with my son because he needed a haircut and he was refusing to cut. Like he really did not want to cut his hair, but schools was starting and I'm like, hey, dude, we need a hair. So I pulled up two images and instead of saying, do you want a haircut or telling him you're going to get a haircut? He screenshot two pictures and said, which haircut do you want? Speaker 2 (15:09) And it Speaker 3 (15:10) gave him some control. He got to pick. So therefore, it wasn't a no. It gave him an option. So don't ask Speaker 1 (15:20) a question that you don't want to know to. Don't ask a yes or no question that you don't want to know to. That's the better way to phrase it. Speaker 3 (15:27) Don't ask a yes or no question that you want to know to. Give options. So some more examples. baby Zoe one day when she's old enough to get her shoes. Do you want to put your shoes on? Cause Zoe might be like, no. Yeah. So you say, do you want the red shoes or the blue shoes? I mean, this will work on baby Zoe all the way up to your 18 year old. I mean, my son's 15 and this was not, do you want to get your haircut? It's like, do you want this haircut or this haircut? Yeah. I Speaker 2 (15:53) was thinking I'd just be like, Hey, put your shoes on, but this is kinder. Speaker 1 (15:57) That may not work. She might look at you and say, no. Do you Speaker 3 (16:02) want to brush your teeth? That invites a no. So maybe you have two different toothbrushes and you say dinosaur toothbrush or astronaut one. I feel Speaker 1 (16:10) like you could do that with Patrick. Speaker 2 (16:13) I will say he Speaker 1 (16:14) brushes Speaker 2 (16:14) his teeth. I Speaker 1 (16:16) wasn't implying he doesn't brush his teeth. It's just that he still says daddy. I was going to say he brushes his teeth for like five Speaker 2 (16:23) minutes at a time. It really blows my mind. Speaker 1 (16:26) I was just thinking how cute he calls daddy so he needs a dinosaur toothbrush. Because he's Speaker 2 (16:30) a Speaker 1 (16:30) little Speaker 2 (16:30) child. Speaker 1 (16:31) Do you want to get in the car seat? That invites a no. So you say, do you want to hop in like a bunny or climb in like a bear? Speaker 3 (16:42) Do you want to clean up? That invites a no. So you say, pick up the blocks first or the cars first, and then they get to decide. Do you want to go to bed? You might get a no for that, but if you say blue blanket or star blanket, and then they pick which one they want to go to bed with. I like it. Do you want to have game night? We've got these Hasbro games here. Do you want a game night? Speaker 1 (17:08) No. No. Do you want to play Hungry, Hungry Hippo or do you want to play Trouble? I want to play Hungry, Hungry Hippos. Speaker 2 (17:14) That's the one I would pick too. As a kid, I
