So if you were giving, yeah, yeah, it makes it a little more. So I get Speaker 4 (3:06) all the power to pick the winner. Speaker 3 (3:08) Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is cool. Yeah, yeah. Because we could always kind of do the loser safe way and go, well, I think this person will win. Sure. But Speaker 1 (3:17) we have to pick the person we want to see win. Can you bet on this? Like, is there a sports book? Speaker 3 (3:24) Is everything betting Speaker 1 (3:24) to you? Speaker 3 (3:24) Yes, dude. Is literally everything betting to you? At Speaker 4 (3:27) this point in my life, yes, it is. Because that would be cool to bet on this. Like, you know how people go to certain sports experts for, like, bet advice? They come to this to bet on Speaker 1 (3:37) the CMA Speaker 4 (3:38) Awards. Speaker 1 (3:38) The problem is we're not giving who probably will Speaker 3 (3:42) win advice. Because I think I can pick who probably will much better than I'll do if I'm picking who I'd like to see win. Okay. Also, it's these type shows that get me in trouble. Why? If I'm just going full opinion, because... Yeah, because Speaker 4 (3:56) you're being honest. Speaker 3 (3:57) If, let's say, for example, and there's entertainer of the year, single of the year, vocal group of the year, but I'll do a category, musician of the year, for example, right? And so, I don't know, a lot of these people, this is not a category we talk about, but if I were like, the guitar player, Tom Bukovac. Don't know Tom. Right. And if I said, you know, I think based on the statistics and I think Tom's probably going to win. And then let's say Rob McNally, who plays guitar, comes up and goes, I heard you said that Tom was. Yeah, but I was using data. You know who Rob McNally is? He played Speaker 1 (4:31) on our radio. Yeah. Speaker 4 (4:33) Like what's so cool about this musician of the year award, almost every year there's one musician that played on one of our albums. Not only Speaker 3 (4:40) that, like our friend Speaker 4 (4:41) Charlie Worsham is up. Speaker 1 (4:42) as well. That's a real, but Speaker 3 (4:43) if I do the cop out way of going, here's who I think. And then one of them come up to me. I'm like, no, sorry. I was just using some data. Yeah. If I go, here's who I'd like to see win. I can't get out of that. Speaker 4 (4:54) And that's what we're going to do. Speaker 3 (4:55) Yeah. Yeah. Of course. Of course. So just a little background here. It's the 60th CMA awards. Yes. And. There are two major award shows. There's the CMAs that happen in November. There's the ACMs that happen a bit more in the spring, late spring, summer. The difference is, well, they're different letters. Speaker 4 (5:15) Yeah, different organizations. Yeah, they're different letters. One's CMA, one's ACM. They Speaker 1 (5:19) take place in different places. Well, sometimes. They've had the ACMs in here before. Speaker 3 (5:24) Where have they, where was the last one? Vegas and Dallas. They did Vegas, but they've had it in Nashville. But ACMs were started in California. It's a little younger. Oh, I didn't know that. And CMAs are very Nashville. Speaker 1 (5:38) It's a little older, a little more prestigious. So early on, did Dwight Yoakam win all the awards? Him and Bucky Owens, every award. It's like, Speaker 4 (5:45) that's how it started. It's Speaker 3 (5:46) all Speaker 1 (5:46) them. Speaker 3 (5:47) And also what happens a bit is the ACMs, it's not this one, this is the CMAs. The ACMs are known to be a bit more progressive and a little younger. So you would see people like in the past, like Thomas Rett won Entertainer of the Year a few years ago. I know there were a couple other examples of that, but I don't have them right now. Didn't do that research. But they're generally known to be a little more progressive. Got it. Where the CMAs longstanding. Traditional. Very much so. Probably slightly. Speaker 3 (6:25) more value to artists just because they've been around a lot longer, but both are massive, but those are the two big ones. Speaker 1 (6:30) Different trophies too. Yeah. They're different organizations. Yeah. Yeah. One of them's glass and the other one is metal. Yeah. So the CM, we actually have them both. You do? I have them here in the studio. Oh, that'd be cool. Props. Speaker 3 (6:42) Hey, Morgan, would you grab me a CMA and an ACM? Dude, Speaker 4 (6:45) have you noticed how cool the ACM trophies are? At first, I thought it was like, okay, cool. It's just a metal thing that sticks up. It's Speaker 3 (6:52) a Speaker 4 (6:52) cowboy hat on top. It's Speaker 3 (6:53) a cowboy hat. Oh, you didn't know? No. Oh, my bad. I didn't mean to like yuck your yums there. Speaker 1 (6:57) It's okay. I just didn't realize. I yucked Speaker 3 (6:59) your Speaker 1 (6:59) yums because that's bad. I should have just let you enjoy that. I apologize. Yes. Because I always look at it straight on, right? And if you look at it straight on, it's just Speaker 4 (7:07) like a standing thing. Almost like an Emmy, but not holding anything. I'm Speaker 1 (7:12) about Speaker 4 (7:12) to show. Yes. Yeah. And then you look Speaker 1 (7:15) on top of it, it's a freaking Speaker 4 (7:16) cowboy hat. Speaker 1 (7:17) Yeah. That's cool. So there's also- Here they come. Thank you. There's also the CMT Awards. Speaker 3 (7:23) Right. There's also, there's all these awards. But the two biggest ones are the ACMs and the CMAs, and we're going to do the CMAs. So this is my, one of my CMAs. Speaker 4 (7:33) 2019. Cool. Speaker 3 (7:35) Same, every year, same shape. But this is that for those that are watching. It kind of looks like a rocket ship. A glass rocket. You don't think like a rocket? Yeah. You ever have hemorrhoids? No. Okay. So it's what it looks. That's what a hemorrhoid looks like? No. But I had to put these white rockets up my butt. What the? Dude, Speaker 4 (7:58) I thought a hemorrhoid Speaker 3 (7:59) is around. You have to get the thing in your butt. Oh, my gosh. So it's shaped like this. Yeah, it's medicine. It's hard at first, but it turns into goo. And so it looks kind of like this, but it's fully white. And it has a tip and you shove it up your butt. And then it helps your butt. Speaker 4 (8:13) I did not know that. Thank you. It's about that Speaker 3 (8:15) size, too. It's a little smaller than this. Do you think Speaker 4 (8:17) that's where they got the inspiration of making that trophy? I don't think so. Okay. Speaker 3 (8:20) Yeah. But this is the CMA, and it is glass, and it is extremely classy and amazing. And the Speaker 1 (8:27) award show we're not talking about, but this is an ACM. Okay. Look at it straight on. Straight on? It just looks like a Speaker 4 (8:34) thing, you know, like a statue standing up. Speaker 1 (8:38) And Speaker 4 (8:38) then here's the... It's a freaking cowboy hat. Mike, did you know the cowboy hat thing? I Speaker 1 (8:42) did. Speaker 3 (8:42) Yeah, okay. I didn't mean to like pee in Eddie's Cheerios because when he was freaking out, I thought that Speaker 1 (8:47) was just something you knew we all knew. No, I had no idea. We also did that special where we did a bunch of research on it. So I kind of knew the history of the trophy. There you go. What's the history of that trophy? Speaker 3 (8:57) So they wanted to have something to commemorate country music. So they made a trophy and they gave it to people. Okay. Yeah. Speaker 1 (9:02) All Speaker 4 (9:03) right. That's it. That does it. Speaker 3 (9:04) Cowboy hat country. Moving on. Speaker 3 (9:08) All right. For those that are watching this on Netflix, you saw the trophy. If you're listening to the podcast, you didn't, but you can always go to Netflix and watch. Okay. So back to the CMAs, Nashville based organization. It is the slightly more prestigious, but a little stuffier. where the ACMs are still extremely prestigious, a little more progressive. Speaker 1 (9:30) You're not talking about the actual award show? I am both. I'm talking about all of it together. Because the award Speaker 4 (9:36) show is like you've got to dress. The CMA is very formal. And Speaker 3 (9:39) at the ACMs, I wore a bow tie, no shirt, and a Speaker 1 (9:42) pair of cutoffs. That's what's up. Speaker 3 (9:45) Okay, so there we are. We're at the CMAs. It's going to be the 60th one. And for us, we don't get to vote just because. We have jobs in media. You have to be a CMA member. So there's some sort of process. And if you have a job that they value enough to actually have a vote, you pay your dues. Do you still pay your dues? Speaker 4 (10:05) I don't, but somebody pays them for me. Somebody pays them for me too. Yeah. It's pretty cool. Who's paying that? I think the company. Somebody in the company does. I bet they don't even know where they just stopped. Then let's not remind them. They don't even Speaker 3 (10:13) buy us water anymore. Do you know what's Speaker 4 (10:15) funny about the membership? You're right. The membership used to come with a card. Do you have your membership card? No. It's metal. I carry on my trophy. That's even better. Yeah. Dude, the metal card used to go off on every metal detector I would go through and I had to just get rid of it because it was in my wallet just to show people like, look, I'm Speaker 3 (10:31) a Speaker 4 (10:31) CMA member, but it's Speaker 1 (10:32) an actual metal card. The metal card set it off because my black card, my black card, American Express, unlimited, you know, it's metal. And it doesn't set anything off. What a flex. It doesn't. Speaker 3 (10:43) You got one of those? Speaker 1 (10:44) Shut Speaker 3 (10:44) up. Okay. So. We're going to go through the categories, and we're going to pick who we think, who we'd like to see win, who deserves to win. Based on whatever, right? It doesn't matter. Speaker 4 (10:55) Yeah, I like this. Speaker 3 (10:56) Okay, let's go to the big one first. And we can argue with each other. Speaker 4 (11:00) I don't want to argue with you. Oh, do you want me to? Speaker 3 (11:04) No, I'm just saying, if I make a point you don't think is right, please say so. Okay. Yeah. Entertainer of the Year. Oh, I should say this too. Whenever this is voted for, it's multiple rounds. So first we get an email that says, log into this. Here's the number. And here is your password, whatever. So we log into the portal, the password. And then they basically just ask you, who do you like for Entertainer of the Year? And you can write it in. And there are no options. Yep. So it's always Engelbert Humperdinck, me. Like it's Speaker 1 (11:35) who Speaker 3 (11:35) I'm writing in. Bob Speaker 4 (11:37) Marley. The Wiggles. Speaker 3 (11:38) Yes. So then. Everybody that's a member has written in all these people. And that second email comes and you log in and it's basically the top 15 that got submitted. From the top 15, they allow you to pick four, maybe five, but whatever it is, four or five. And then that's how this ballot happens that you see on television. It's not a little board because some people think, oh, it's four or five people making all the decisions. No, it's literally 700 to 1,000 people in this world, this space. You don't have to live in Nashville. Like there are people with music jobs that don't live here that vote. People work in radio people. So it's not even, well, the classic Nashville system, people from all over the country. They submit. They vote down to four or five. Those four or five get voted on as to one, and that one is announced on television. The question is, though, who counts the votes? So there is a company that we just trust. Speaker 4 (12:34) Okay. Speaker 3 (12:35) It's like a law firm because I used to present on this show before I got banned from it. That's another story? It's Speaker 4 (12:42) a Speaker 3 (12:42) whole other story. They wouldn't even give me the card. Speaker 3 (12:46) Five minutes before I went up. Oh, wow. Because what I could do is I could, you can push it and kind of open it because it's just taped and see who's in there. And you can bet on it. Everything's betting with you. But you could spoil it. Yeah. And contractually, it has to be a secret until it's read on television. Wow. Speaker 1 (13:04) And they do Speaker 3 (13:05) a great job of making sure nobody knows. So it is always a law firm or company that does the tabulating. And then they sit back there. It's two people basically acting like security, but they also work for the firm. And they sit there and they guard it all. Speaker 4 (13:21) Dang. Speaker 3 (13:21) And you don't – they hand you the card. For me, they would hand me the card a couple minutes before I would go on. But they make sure you don't look in it. So they're watching you. Yeah, and Speaker 1 (13:30) you Speaker 3 (13:30) can't leave with it. Wow. Do you remember what you presented? I've presented like seven times. I can give you my most memorable couple. I presented with Don Felder. No, not Don Felder, from the Eagles. Joe. Yeah, Joe Cocker. Joe Walsh. Yeah, I presented with Joe Walsh. Dude, that was awesome. And Speaker 1 (13:49) he's Speaker 3 (13:49) crazy. He's crazy. Joe Walsh is crazy. He's like, ah! The Speaker 1 (13:53) rock and Speaker 3 (13:54) roll guy, man. I love that. Yeah, Speaker 1 (13:56) and Speaker 3 (13:56) I knew going out there, because they put it all on a prompter. Speaker 1 (13:59) I knew it wasn't going to go that way. You knew that he wasn't going to stick to the prompter? I'm not sure he knew there was a prompter. Because Speaker 3 (14:07) we were talking before he went out, and I'm like, this is Joe Walsh. That's crazy. My Maserati, just one in my... And I'm like, I love the Eagles. He has a very distinct voice. Yes. And I thought it was super cool. And I knew Arkansas Keith would think it was cool. That I was one of the eagles. Of course. So we go out. It's all on the prompter. And he's supposed to start. And we walk out. And he just stares and Speaker 1 (14:32) doesn't start. And he's supposed to. And he's supposed to start. There Speaker 3 (14:36) you Speaker 1 (14:36) go. What do they do? Do they give you a, or is it a red light? What is it? So what happens is on those shows, because they never want you Speaker 3 (14:42) to start early. that you know where the prompter is, and they say, you can start talking right when we turn the words on. So it's not as if the words are there and then a red light comes on. There are no words. There's a massive prompter, and they try to make it as idiot-proof as possible for all of us that are standing up there because we're getting so many directions, where to go, when to go, how much time you have. As soon as the words come on, that's when you start. Makes it so easy. Okay. So we're up there and the words come on. And it says, Joe, you first. Says Joe. And he doesn't say anything. And this is five seconds total, maybe three, but it feels like a year. Oh, I bet on Speaker 4 (15:22) TV. Because I'm going, should Speaker 3 (15:24) I jump in in my head? And so I do. And I'm like, hey, we're here. Joe Walsh, everybody clap, clap, clap, clap. Oh, yeah. Then he reads. And then he just keeps going. There's saying stuff that's not on there. I love that. And so I'm good on my feet. And so we just did, it was, it came off much better than it felt. It only felt weird because we weren't doing what we were told. Yeah. So yeah, that's probably my favorite. That's cool. One year, Sharna and I, when I was on Dancing with the Stars, we flew right back in just to do this and flew back out. And that was an exhausting one, but it was cool to bring her because she knows nothing about country music. And then we presented together like two weeks before the show was over. Speaker 4 (16:07) Oh, wow. That's amazing. Yeah. So that was like right in the middle of it all. Speaker 1 (16:11) Yeah. I was dead. Because on ABC, was it kind of like a cross Speaker 4 (16:15) promotion or something? Is that how that stuff works? It's exactly what it was. Speaker 3 (16:18) ABC. And this was on ABC at the time. Is the show still on ABC? Yeah. It is. So yeah, those are probably my two favorites. And I remember coming back and I was dead tired. And so I'm sitting there and... Sharna's sitting next to me and we're in the very front row because if you're going to present, they put you up close so your walk is much easier. Quick on the stage. And so...
