Speaker 2 (3:44) We have a cool show because we'll talk to author John Talti in a little bit who wrote the book on Lane Kiffin and... Like I said, I love Lane Kiffin now. Only because I hate him so much. It's full. I'm into it. And they gave up, by the way. They said, okay, we won't sign any pros. There's two other spots. They just signed two other dudes. They don't want to get kicked out of the league. So what happens to the pros? Those guys, they just go back and try to get on a practice squad. Not that they wouldn't have anyway. They might have, but they decided, and I would have too, if I could come back and play college again, not because it's just college, because they were going to make... probably a couple million bucks versus 200,000. Less than that on the practice squad. Speaker 3 (4:28) Yeah, and actually play. Possibly win a championship with LSU, how good they are. Speaker 2 (4:32) It's all about the millions, though. Yeah, for sure. That's all secondary. True, very true. It's making 90 grand a year versus 2 million a year. Yeah. So, yeah, laying lost. But we'll talk to John coming up in a little bit. He's got a book. We'll do our Super Bowl predictions coming up as well. The game last night was interesting, and the note that I made was, did the Pearl Jam guitarist play the national anthem? Mike McCready. Don't do that. Don't do what? I know that's your guy. Yeah, what about him? And you love Pearl Jam, so you're obviously going to be positive about it. Oh, it gave me chills. He was doing too many solos that weren't. I don't like when singers do runs that aren't a part of it, and I don't like all the solos that aren't a part of the song. So just do the song. Do the song. Because there'd be a part where it'd be like... Yeah, that's Speaker 3 (5:20) where Speaker 2 (5:20) you gotta do the wham-bam. No, it wasn't even Jimi Hendrix. It was more. It was too much. It was not the same melody. No need to show off for the anthem. You did it. It sounded great. It was too much dicking around. What? Wow. That's crazy, dude. I watched that and I got chills. Speaker 4 (5:37) Because it was your guy or because Speaker 2 (5:39) it was his guy? Yeah, Speaker 4 (5:40) I mean, Mike McCready, Pearl Jam, all those guys. I love Pearl Jam. And to see Mike McCready represent Seattle and America with his guitar was so cool to me. But I guess you hated it. Speaker 2 (5:52) As someone who likes music, he can play guitar, obviously. But if it were a singer doing the same thing, I say the same thing. If someone's like, Speaker 2 (6:07) of the brain. I hate that too. That's not your song to take Speaker 4 (6:12) liberties with. You want to know what's so cool is I've seen him play that live because in some of his concert during Yellow Leadbetter, he'll go into a solo into the Star Spangled Banner. So I've heard that same version. So yes, I can understand why hearing that at first being like, oh, that's kind of, oh, that's too much. It's Speaker 2 (6:30) not Speaker 4 (6:30) about, no, Speaker 2 (6:31) no. That's how I feel about that song with anybody doing it. It wasn't just about him and his performance. No liberties with the national anthem. Stapleton a Speaker 3 (6:39) few years ago, he just played it straight, right? Straightforward. That Speaker 2 (6:42) one Speaker 3 (6:42) gave me chills. Speaker 2 (6:43) Straightforward. The song is meant to be saying about America, not for you to do a little dance on the side. Amen. Okay, guys, relax. And I made a note to talk about that because I was so annoyed by it. And you knew Speaker 4 (6:55) that you were going to annoy me too. And he was like, Speaker 2 (6:56) in the home. He did a little tapping. He's putting in like all the famous riffs in musical history. He goes into even flow. So the game quickly from last night. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That Speaker 3 (7:12) was Speaker 2 (7:12) tough. Not a great game. No. And Sam Dunrow gets hurt immediately. And at first. I didn't know why it was hurt at first. They were just saying lower body for a minute. It turns out it was his hip. Yeah, because Speaker 4 (7:24) he was limping. Speaker 3 (7:24) What are they saying now? Yeah, so now they're saying he's expected to miss just a few weeks. So for sure already out for the second game. We expected that. But they said that they dodged a bullet basically and he should be out just a few weeks. But what's the injury? But they're still waiting to get an MRI for more results as of we record this right now. Speaker 2 (7:41) Yeah, what's the injury? Speaker 3 (7:42) It's just a hip injury. Speaker 2 (7:43) Oh. I had one of those. Speaker 4 (7:47) Like just tweaked it? Like how bad was yours? Speaker 2 (7:49) Generic hip. No, not that bad. It was just a hip injury. But you could just say that. It just hurt a little bit. I was fine the next day. So I had the same thing until they diagnosed him fully. I had the same injury. Speaker 4 (8:00) Did you Speaker 2 (8:01) get refunds on all your bets? No, because I had bet a parlay of Sam Darnold. and Drake May both passing for over 230 together. And I don't think Drake May hit 230. He was not even close the last time I looked. Got it. But if he would have, you would have gotten paid half. I would have got paid half. Got Speaker 3 (8:17) it. Yeah. It says the hip is intact. It's more of a muscle thing. So that's why they're looking for MRI. It Speaker 2 (8:22) said it's Speaker 3 (8:22) more of a Speaker 2 (8:22) muscle thing. Speaker 3 (8:23) That's what it literally says. Whoever that Speaker 2 (8:25) writer is needs it. It's more of a muscle thing. Speaker 4 (8:27) And something. Yeah. Speaker 2 (8:30) I hate to see anybody get hurt. Yeah, that was terrible. In the first game of the season. And the Super Bowl champions. But Speaker 4 (8:37) let's go. What's his name? Drew Locke? Drew Locke? That sounds right. I mean, let's go Drew Locke, dude. I mean, you came back and won that game. Speaker 2 (8:46) Yeah, and Speaker 3 (8:47) Drake made three picks. Yeah. That helped. Yeah, we also lost a game. But what helps me, not that you guys are asking, but what helps me is... Because you're a Patriots fan. Yeah, I'm a Patriots fan. But last year, nobody remembers, great year we had. Week one, we lost to the Raiders. Yeah. At home in an ugly loss. Okay. And you made it to the Super Bowl. And we made it to the Super Bowl. We lost three games all year. So two more after that, all year. So I'm like, okay. Speaker 2 (9:13) It's week one. The difference is that team last year, year one coach, quarterback finding himself. This, you know who you are. Same coach, same team. I don't think that, I get it. I'd hold on to hope too. Yeah. But Seattle's also great defensively. Speaker 3 (9:29) Their defense is nasty. And I will say, Drake may look like he had PTSD from the Super Bowl. Oh. As long as we don't play the Seahawks, I'll feel okay. I Speaker 2 (9:38) like his hair though. It's a little longer. He's going out a little bit. I didn't notice that. Speaker 3 (9:42) I Speaker 2 (9:42) just noticed the pics. Looked a little longer to me. He's on the sideline before the game while the guy was taking liberties with the national anthem I didn't like and they were showing everybody. I was like, yeah, Drake Mays' hair looks a little longer. Yeah, it was rough. Kind of a boring game. I, at halftime, my wife and I watched the show because there's football Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Wait, you watched like a halftime show? No, we watched a show. Oh, okay. We went over and watched Dark Speaker 4 (10:03) Matter. Speaker 2 (10:03) You know who played the halftime show? Speaker 4 (10:05) Was there a Speaker 2 (10:05) halftime show? Yeah. Speaker 4 (10:06) Who? Mike McCready. Mike McCready and the Soundgarden guitarist with some girl. They went full Seattle, huh? Yeah, they went all Seattle. But what songs were they playing? I don't know. I think the girl's an artist. I don't know who she is, but they were there. Those two guys were her guitarists. Did you watch it? Nah, you can kind of see it in the background, and then I followed Pearl Jam on Instagram, and they played it. It was Taylor Momsen. Speaker 2 (10:28) Oh, I know Taylor Momsen, the Pretty Reckless. Yeah, she's in the Pretty Reckless, lead singer of that, and then she was also in the Jim Carrey version of the Green Guy. The Grinch? She's Speaker 1 (10:38) the Speaker 2 (10:38) kid. Oh, really? The Speaker 1 (10:40) blonde Speaker 2 (10:40) kid, yeah. That's cool. Speaker 4 (10:41) Well, there you go. She played the halftime show. That movie's not called The Green Guy? The Grinch. The Green Guy that Stole Christmas? But that's funny because the mask was also green, right? Speaker 2 (10:50) Yeah, but he didn't steal Christmas. Yeah, he did not. Speaker 4 (10:51) He did not. Speaker 2 (10:52) The NFL, for the first time in 20 years, will not have a rookie quarterback starting week one. Whoa. Because think of who the rookie quarterbacks are. Really, Mendoza would be the one, and he's not going to start because Kirk Cousins is. But the rest, like Nussmeyer's not starting. The Rams, I think he's third string because Stetson Bennett is second. That's right. Speaker 4 (11:18) Correct. Who's starting in Arizona? Kobe Brissett. Oh, wow. Speaker 2 (11:25) Okay. Speaker 4 (11:26) Because I know Carson Beck is there, but I don't even know. Is he a backup? Why do you keep talking about Speaker 2 (11:29) Carson Beck? You brought him up like, yes, in the freaking Hall of Fame game. No, no, no. All preseason, dude. He played great. Then he may end up being the starter eventually Speaker 4 (11:38) at some point. I'd be willing, if that's a bet somewhere, I would place that bet that he eventually starts this season. I think Speaker 2 (11:44) the bet would be he starts by what week? Yeah. I don't know if there's one. Does he eventually start this season? Too many words. Speaker 3 (11:52) Drew Aller. Speaker 2 (11:53) Yeah, Drew Aller Speaker 3 (11:55) is not going to start. He's Speaker 2 (11:55) in Speaker 3 (11:55) Pittsburgh, right? Cade Klubnick, yeah. But Klubnick is the backup in New York for the Jets behind Geno, so that's a possibility. He could start at some point. Speaker 2 (12:04) Klubnick's funny because all the comments from Jets fans that didn't watch college going, this is our guy. This is our guy. Without seeing him play college. Yeah. But, yeah, it's the only time in 20 years that a rookie has not started. Wow. Game one. That's probably a good thing for them. Speaker 3 (12:22) And for us Speaker 2 (12:23) as Speaker 3 (12:23) viewers. Oh Speaker 2 (12:24) yeah, I agree. Right. I mean, if you're Arizona, I know they paid Jacoby Brissett. Yeah. And you want to lose every game. Maybe you start your rookie. They say that they don't tank. Speaker 4 (12:36) Like they swear that that's not a thing. You Speaker 2 (12:39) can't tank as a player because you have a contract. Right. A lot of these guys are trying to get paid. You don't want to tank as a coach because you may not have a job. But what you're tanking as is affecting what personnel are getting to play, who is injured. Like when Max Crosby. doesn't play the last three games because he's got an injury. He really doesn't. Or it's so small he could still play. But the GM or the decision makers that actually do want a worse record, they will try to affect it by having weaker personnel be available to the coaches. And then those weak personnel, they're playing as hard as they possibly can because they want another job. That's interesting. And it's hard to get 22 people to tank. It's hard in the NBA. Or cheat. But in the NBA, they don't tank except for the players don't play bad. They just put in the worst players. Yeah. Yeah. So it's not tanking isn't the players go out there going, well, we're going to suck. No, they're playing as hard as they possibly can. But what they do is they limit the amount of minutes for the good or if they get in at all. Speaker 3 (13:39) Yeah. They put in the worst players. Baseball too. That's where managers and GMs get in trouble or get in fights with each other because the manager's like, I'm getting fired, but you're keeping your job. But I had to play the guys you wanted me to play. Doesn't make sense. Speaker 2 (13:52) Everybody's team this week because everybody's playing now. Your team is the Patriots. You did lose. That's done. But what are you doing? Because it's weird you're not playing Sunday because it's like football has really started and you got your game. So yours isn't even until a week and a half. Speaker 3 (14:06) Oh, my gosh. I know that's the worst part. We had to wait like 10, 11 days for the next one to try to rebound. But I guess the most – is that what you're answering? You're asking what's Speaker 2 (14:14) interested? You're not really a Tennessee fan. No, you're not a Tennessee fan. Speaker 3 (14:17) Oh, the Vols? Are you going to claim it? Yeah, GBO, baby. Let's go. Oh, my gosh. Speaker 2 (14:21) Let's Speaker 3 (14:21) go. Speaker 2 (14:22) Then what game are you personally invested in that has not happened yet? Speaker 3 (14:26) Oh, Texas and Ohio State. Just because you're Speaker 2 (14:29) interested in that Speaker 3 (14:29) game? Yes. Just because I love college football and those are two great teams. Speaker 2 (14:33) Yeah, and fairly. His team already played. Yeah, I get that. Speaker 4 (14:37) Eddie. There is no other game that interests me at all this week other than Sunday night. When the Cowboys go to New York City and play the Giants. Dude, I've been waiting all year for this. Like, all year for this game. I am so excited. We're going to find out who the Cowboys are, too. This is it. Don't put it all on week one. Why not? Please don't. I'm telling you right now, do not do that. You got 17 games, bruh. I know, dude. It's so exciting to me that it's finally here and the Cowboys get to play and it's going to be on a Sunday night. because they get center stage. There's no other game that's, no fantasy's distracting me. It's going to be all Cowboys. Speaker 2 (15:20) Also, you're playing a bit of a wild card with the Giants. Yeah. It's one of the teams that you kind of have an idea of who and what every team is going into the year, but you got a new coach. You got year two of Jackson Dart, who is healthy right now. Year two of Cam Scadaboo. The Giants have a good... front four defensively. So who knows what the Giants are going to be this year? That's interesting to me. And I hope you guys run. We own them in our league. I hope we just run them. Right? Just kill the Cowboys Speaker 4 (15:55) from Speaker 2 (15:55) the very beginning. But Speaker 4 (15:56) the Giants are Speaker 2 (15:56) one of those wildcard teams where we really don't know what they are. Speaker 3 (15:59) Yeah, and with Harbaugh now, you're like, they're at least going to be stable, you think. Speaker 2 (16:02) Mr. Consistency. Speaker 3 (16:03) Right. Mike? Speaker 2 (16:05) Texas game for sure. Huge Cowboys fan, but that game is going to determine a lot, I feel. If they don't win that game, I don't think it's their year. Texas? I don't either because just for both teams. Because nightmares. Speaker 2 (16:18) Are they Speaker 4 (16:19) in Texas? Speaker 2 (16:19) Are they playing in Austin? Even looking at Ohio State's schedule, they'll probably be favored. Texas is favored in this game because it's in Austin. They're a point-and-a-half favorite. But Ohio State will probably be favored or close to in every game. But they have to play Oregon. Will you pull up to Ohio State's schedule? For whoever loses this game, it's going to be tough. Yeah, Texas is a point-and-a-half favorite. Number one, Ohio State. Number four, Texas. And you're not going? Speaker 3 (16:44) No. Did you even look at tickets? No. That'd be crazy. I bet. Go later in the season when it's not as hot. Yes. I feel that, man. Speaker 2 (16:54) Outside. So they got Speaker 3 (16:55) Kent State. This is Ohio State. Okay. After Texas. Then Illinois. It's Speaker 2 (17:00) a tough Speaker 3 (17:00) one. Speaker 2 (17:00) And Illinois, they probably won't lose to, but Illinois is sneaky. Go ahead. Always. At Iowa. Again, a little more sneaky than Illinois, but go ahead. Then Maryland at home. Sucks. Speaker 3 (17:10) At Indiana. Okay. Speaker 2 (17:12) That could be an L. Speaker 3 (17:14) At Speaker 2 (17:14) USC. USC supposedly is a lot better this year. Speaker 3 (17:18) Then Oregon, so that's three in a row. Dang. And then they close out with Nebraska, Northwestern, and then Michigan last. Speaker 2 (17:26) So there's three games that they could possibly lose. I'm not going to count. The Iowa game could be sneaky, but I mean there's three and a half games there they could possibly lose. Who were Speaker 4 (17:36) they playing at the end there? You said Michigan was the last, but who was before that? Nebraska and Speaker 3 (17:39) Northwestern. Nothing. Did you know Chip Kelly's at Northwestern? Saw him the other day. I was like, Speaker 2 (17:45) what? Not even the coordinator, but he's just there as like a... Consultant? Offensive assistant or something? Yeah, they call them... Senior analysts. Analysts, yes. Is Speaker 3 (17:54) that Speaker 2 (17:54) what it is? Analysts, yeah. Sounds Speaker 3 (17:55) like a good job. Speaker 2 (17:55) Would you pull up to Texas schedule? Speaker 3 (17:57) Yeah. Speaker 2 (17:57) Because I know Texas has got a monster run-in coming up later with the Arkansas Razorbacks. Ooh, there's Speaker 3 (18:03) an Speaker 2 (18:03) L. Watch out. In Austin. I Speaker 1 (18:04) think that's the game I'm going to go to. Speaker 2 (18:05) Yeah, it should be. You want a guaranteed win. Speaker 3 (18:08) Okay, so UTSA after Ohio State. And then at Tennessee. Speaker 2 (18:12) Okay. It just depends. That freshman five-star quarterback looks really good. Tennessee has. But again, he's a freshman. Speaker 3 (18:19) Yeah. He just does. Then Oklahoma at home. Speaker 2 (18:22) That game. That's not at home. It's in Dallas. That could be a disaster. Go ahead. Florida at home. They're going to be better than people think. Ole Miss at home. Might be really good. We don't know. That Louisville game was not good. No. But if you haven't heard the story of the... Patriots and the Raiders, then you've not heard a story. Because they went to the Super Bowl and they lost to the Raiders week one. I Speaker 4 (18:46) just heard that Speaker 2 (18:47) story. If you haven't heard that story yet, write Speaker 3 (18:49) a book about it one day. And then Mississippi State at home. At Missouri. At LSU. And then against the Arkansas Razorbacks. And then at Texas A &M to finish off Speaker 2 (19:04) the Speaker 3 (19:04) season. Speaker 2 (19:05) So I could see two L's there. Yeah, it's an important game. Good one. I have the Arkansas game. They're playing at Utah. Arkansas at number 20 Utah. Utah's a 12.5 point favorite. I will have to watch that while at the Brooks and Dunn concert. Fun Speaker 4 (19:19) late game. Right? 9 p.m. or something? Concert's this Speaker 2 (19:23) weekend? It's on Saturday. If Arkansas beats Utah, I give all three of you guys 100 bucks when I get here on Monday. Really? So Speaker 4 (19:30) note, don't bet on that game. I'm wearing my gear. That's already taken care of. Speaker 2 (19:35) You know, I want us all to have joy if that happens. Love that. Deal. There's no chance. There is a chance. There's always a chance. And also there's Speaker 1 (19:41) a Speaker 2 (19:41) chance. I was watching some Utah breakdown. There's a chance. But there's a reason it's a 12.5 point spread. And I'm not touching it betting. I might take Arkansas 12.5. But I don't think I'm going to touch it betting. So, yeah, it's back. We're back though, baby. We're back. The wait is over. Football is here and so is DraftKings. DraftKings is now live in all 50 states. One app. Every sport. Nationwide. New DraftKings customers. I don't know. Have you guys heard of faux journaling? Yeah, it's reading. It's called reading. So we don't like to use that word anymore. Okay. Speaker 1 (21:37) A panel of New Yorker cartoonists. Speaker 7 (21:40) Have you guys done Terry Gross' Peloton class yet? No! Speaker 5 (21:43) I've been dying to. I'm Speaker 7 (21:45) so sorry. I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald at the Wonderland Bookstore on 14th. Speaker 5 (21:53) That's crazy. I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark Thirty. No way. Speaker 8 (22:00) the last bookstore though. Kim Cattrall is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday. Speaker 7 (22:05) A panel of Eurovision participants. Speaker 8 (22:08) And we do a little Halloween sometimes. Does the Pope dress up? Speaker 5 (22:31) On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus, or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I chose option B. I'm Julie Pinheiro, and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita, trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone, I kept meeting people and they were like, you smiled at us. Not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it. It can be a time where you push your limits, change your mind, or wake up to a new version of yourself. So whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip, I hope you listen to Solita on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Listen to The Survivor Files with Elizabeth Smart on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 6 (24:32) Our town is small taters by most standards, right?
