Speaker 4 (3:51) I don't care about that. No, no, that's stupid. I mean, if people want to use their phones, they can use their phones. That doesn't bother me, especially people with kids. Dude, let it rip. I understand what that's like. But if you're in a no phone section, you don't have to be bothered by phones. But what's the bother? What's the phone? Like, how does that bother you? If the person next to you sitting there is on their phone or using their phone? Could be sound. Speaker 3 (4:16) It Speaker 4 (4:17) could Speaker 3 (4:17) be they're on their phone. Speaker 8 (4:18) I didn't think about that. Taking a Speaker 3 (4:20) FaceTime. A bunch of things. But do you know how for a while, back when we were kids, you could smoke in a restaurant? Dude, that was crazy. You probably never had that. No. Speaker 4 (4:31) Dude, Applebee's had a smoking section. Speaker 3 (4:34) Well, it was a no smoking section first. So you could smoke in the restaurant and there'd be a no smoking section. And then it... got to where then there was just a smoking section, so they started to make it smaller where you could smoke, and then it was completely eliminated. And so I think possibly this will be what happens with phones, where people just don't want to be bothered by people on their phones. And also you could even put yourself in a situation for success. So you go in, you go into the section with no phones, and then you and your family can't use your phones because you're in the section of no phones. So that's how you tell your kids we can't be on our phones. Speaker 4 (5:09) Yeah. No, but I like them on their phones. But Speaker 3 (5:11) I'm saying some people have trouble with their kids, like with connection. Oh, you're always on your phone all the time. Okay, we'll go to the restaurant, but we're going to sit in the no phone section. Anything about that? Speaker 8 (5:19) Eddie, are your kids those kids that have the headphones on the whole time at dinner? Because I see that now, I'm like, dang, I feel bad for those parents, man. They just sit there and their headphones on the whole time, the kids? Speaker 4 (5:29) I didn't know that was a thing. So you're talking about older kids, like teenagers? Yeah, like 15, 16. Yeah, and they just sit Speaker 8 (5:34) there with AirPods or whatever in, and they literally just don't even pay attention to their family. Speaker 4 (5:38) So we don't allow that at restaurants or anything like that. But yeah, dude, it's a thing. Like, they put their headphones on in the car, and I'll be like, hey, so what happened at school today? And they won't answer. And I'm like, hey, I'm talking to you. And then you got to remind, oh, they have their headphones on. So Speaker 3 (5:51) is there the expectation, though, that... they should be focused on dad when they get in the car? A Speaker 4 (5:56) little bit. A Speaker 3 (5:57) little bit or Speaker 4 (5:57) not, because that's... To me, it's like you got to be aware. We're only in the car for 10 minutes. Let's talk. But do they know that? Yes. Because if they don't, it's unfair to go, hey, headphones out. But my oldest son, he wears headphones 24-7. Even if he's not listening to music, he's got the AirPod in there. And it's like, dude, you've got to let me know or be engaged. If we're all in the kitchen together, take those off so we can talk. Instead of me having to wave, I literally have to get in front of him and wave my hands. Hey, I'm talking to you. It's bizarre, man. Is Speaker 3 (6:31) he listening to music or Speaker 4 (6:32) podcast? Music. Always. What kind of music does he like? Hip-hop. Dude, I can just hear it. Like, I'm in the kitchen, all I hear is... Through AirPods, you can hear it? Sometimes. He's got it so loud. That's crazy. That you can hear it through AirPods. Yeah. Speaker 3 (6:45) So, this is an Eddie suggested segment. What would your team's headline be this week? Mm-hmm. I'm assuming that you have Speaker 4 (6:52) one. So, you're a writer, right? You're a writer. Hey, Bobby, we need a headline. This week about your team. Okay. Give it to me. Speaker 3 (7:03) Do we still suck as bad as we once thought? Speaker 3 (7:08) Because we beat Tulsa last week, but they had a backup quarterback, and they're a pretty good G5 school. But again, it was a backup quarterback, and they were celebrating how good. Look at our defense. They did so great. But it was a backup quarterback. And who do you have this week? Texas A &M and College Station. So I'm still going to go with, do we suck as bad as we once thought we did? Okay, I like that. Because there's positive to that headline. Yeah, because we may not suck as bad as we thought we did. We may be getting better. Speaker 8 (7:35) Here we go. What about you and the Speaker 3 (7:36) Patriots? Speaker 8 (7:38) Probably, can we survive the unicorn this weekend? Because we played Josh Allen in the Bills. Oh, man. And that man is a unicorn. And we're struggling. So can we survive? I Speaker 3 (7:48) think if you wrote that, people would be like, what do you mean? You need to give more context. Is he called the unicorn? Survive Speaker 8 (7:52) the unicorn. Can we survive Josh Allen? Speaker 8 (7:56) Getting better? We're Speaker 3 (7:58) not judging Speaker 8 (7:58) you. Speaker 3 (7:59) I didn't understand what you meant by unicorn until you said Josh Allen. Okay, can we, yeah. How about, do we suck as bad as we think? Yeah, everybody thinks we do. Speaker 8 (8:07) Will we hit the Drake Mayday this weekend? Speaker 3 (8:09) All right, we will come back in a second. We'll talk to Ted Wynn now, who is on with us. Joining us is Ted Wynn. Ted's a senior NFL writer for The Athletic, one of the best film analysts covering the league. You can check out his podcast called Just Win, which covers the Raiders, and you can check out his work. The Athletic, which is great. Ted, thanks for jumping on with us. And since you do specialize in the Raiders, how do you feel about a 3-0 Raiders start? Where are we sitting? Are we confident or are we just waiting for the ball to drop? Speaker 2 (8:37) Well, I think it's definitely surprising that they're 3-0 at this point, especially when you look at where they are supposed to be in their timeline of development. But I think for Raider fans, they should just be happy that... The team is doing things right as a franchise. You get the number one pick. You get a good mentor in Kirk Cousins, who's playing much better than anybody thought he would be. He has nine touchdowns through three games. And to me, I think the wins are a bonus. They played Miami, who isn't very good, a Chargers team that's struggling. And they did beat New Orleans in New Orleans, but it was a close game. So I think... things will eventually regress to the norm. But I think it's undeniable that the Raiders are on the right track as far as just getting back to a competent franchise. And we haven't seen that in a long time. Speaker 3 (9:30) And those first two wins that you talked about, Dolphins and Chargers, it's exciting to win those. But week three, you have Brock Bowers back, who that dude is awesome. Like that's got to be a real shot to the system in a positive way moving forward too, right? Yeah, Speaker 2 (9:44) for sure. I mean, you know, I think, Brock Bowers is one of the best offensive weapons in the league, period. And he proved that in a big way coming back. And he's really just about, he's not 100%. He's probably around 80 % to 90 % coming back from knee surgery right before the season. So I think just watching how the Raiders deployed him as a wide receiver, I think he only had nine snaps lined up as an inline tight end. And just watching him dominate cornerbacks. that are pretty decent cornerbacks, that that was pretty revealing of what kind of weapon he can be. I think we'll see him line up inside a little bit more, which you can create more mismatches that way. But just seeing him play the way he did, it just reminds me of Puka Nakua. He's that kind of weapon and can be used in that sort of way. Speaker 3 (10:38) In your film review of J.J. McCarthy, and we'll move to the Giants. What's the best case scenario with J.J. McCarthy, with the Giants? And also, when do you expect him to actually, if he does, start? I think Speaker 2 (10:49) it should be at least a month until he gets in there. I mean, this is the guy that struggled to learn the offense in Minnesota, and it's been years there. So he has to go to New York, learn a new offense, a new language that he's never learned before. So it's going to take some time for him to get acclimated. You want him to be comfortable when you put him out there. You don't want him just kind of struggling to figure things out. I think the best case scenario for him is to play well. And I don't expect playing well doesn't mean for him to throw 20 touchdowns to two interceptions or something like that. But just to show that he's developed some. Because the reason why they gave up on him in Minnesota is because... there was a serious lack of development. You just didn't see improvement from year to year. So show that you can get to your second read a little bit faster. Show you can throw with a little bit more touch. Show that your athleticism can make a difference in an offense that will ask you to make plays with your legs as a runner. So I think the best case scenario for him is to... Play well, show some improvement, and ultimately be a backup for Jackson Dart for a year or two, maybe sit out, and then just kind of follow along with the Geno Smith, Sam Darnold type of timeline and reclamation project. What's going on with Drake May? I think we overrated the Patriots offense last year. This was a bad offensive line. They didn't have that many weapons. And this year, the weapons are not good, especially with A.J. Brown injured. You saw the cracks last year, especially in the playoffs, because during the regular season, they only played one team that ranked in a top 10 in points allowed per drive. In the playoffs, they saw four of those teams, and they really struggled to move the ball. And we saw what happened in the Super Bowl, obviously. And this season, they started the season playing a bunch of teams that are really good defensively. And against those teams, they just can't match up. And I think Drake May is just pressing right now. trying to make things happen. He's trying to skip steps and throwing the ball in places that he shouldn't. He's really pressing. He's kind of spiraling mentally. So it's a snowball effect. I think there's a lot going on. I don't think it takes away from the improvements that he made last year and the trajectory he's on. He's still one of the youngest quarterbacks in the league. Speaker 2 (13:18) It just doesn't look good right now, and he needs more support. I don't know how much that offensive line can improve during the season, but it should help when he gets A.J. Brown back eventually. But he just needs a mental reset and to just stop pressing as much as he is right now. Speaker 3 (13:34) Overnight, saw that Joey Porter Jr. was traded to the Cowboys, and a lot of that was probably because they couldn't get the deal done in Pittsburgh, so they were getting what they could. How do you see this helping Dallas? And did you think... Pittsburgh would get the deal done? Speaker 2 (13:48) No, I mean, from everything we've heard, it just seemed like they were way too far apart. It never seemed like they got close as far as getting a deal done. It seemed like that relationship was strained. I didn't know if a trade was going to happen or not. But yeah, it just seemed like things were just too contentious between the player and the team. But for Dallas... they really need secondary help i mean i was looking at this cornerback group before the season and it's one of the worst cornerback groups in the league so i don't think Porter is a top-tier corner, but he's probably in that second tier of corners, but he wants to get paid like one of the top corners, which is why Pittsburgh wanted to trade him and kind of struggled to find a trading partner for a while until Dallas finally gave in and gave him that second-round pick, even though it's in 2028. And in 2027, those picks are just very valuable right now. But it does give Christian Parker, the Cowboys' defensive coordinator, some flexibility with the secondary. Maybe Caleb Downs moves away from the nickel and back to more of a free safety. We'll see how they move things around, but they just desperately needed some talent. And if you have a guy that you can trust in one-on-one coverage, it just allows you to do a little bit more from a coverage standpoint as far as helping in other places. And I think Porter just really fills that need nicely for them. Speaker 3 (15:11) Hey, NFC East. Feels odd because Washington, probably not good. The Eagles, I don't even know what's happening there. The Giants, they lost their quarterback. And here we are with the Cowboys. Can the Cowboys win that division? Speaker 2 (15:27) Definitely. I mean, when I watched that Ravens game, I came away really encouraged. I mean, the offense looks like it can be that elite offense we expected them to be. They could run the ball. Tyler Guyton, their left tackle. is kind of a developmental project that's been a little disappointing last couple years years he looks awesome he looks like he's taking the next step so if you have teller guyton who you know maybe becoming a star at left tackle and you get uh you get you get your left guard back tyler smith who's an all pro that can be a really good left side of the line and we know about all the other talent they have on the offensive side of the ball so i think it's going to be an elite offense and i think defensively you know obviously we know about all the struggles they've made but they had some good stops against the Ravens, and I don't expect them to be a good defense, but if you could finish around that 20th range in several major defensive categories, that's going to be good enough with how good this offense could be, and obviously adding Joey Porter is going to help that. Speaker 3 (16:29) Let's go back to the Raiders for a second, since it's your specialty, and talk about Fernando Mendoza. What's he feeling right now? Speaker 2 (16:35) I mean, I think if you're Fernando Mendoza, you should be... I think he's genuinely happy that the team is winning. And I think having a mentor like Kirk Cousins, who plays the game the right way, and just watching him execute this offense and watching him read these defenses and be so confident in where to go with the ball quickly, it's just a great learning opportunity for him. So I think, of course, he wants to play. But I think as far as just... sitting back and watching a veteran, there's probably nobody better than Kirk Cousins, especially in Kubiak's system. Speaker 3 (17:13) You watching the Raiders on film and they have a big game with Kansas City coming up, how do you feel like they match up against what Kansas City does offensively? Speaker 2 (17:21) Yeah, this is going to be a really difficult game for the Raiders. This is going to be by far the best team that they've seen. It's going to be by far the best quarterback they've seen. I mean, Patrick Mahomes, Looked a little rusty in week one, but ever since then, he's playing some awesome ball as far as just layering the ball over defenders, really becoming a dangerous play-action quarterback, which was a little bit of a question because it's something he didn't do at a high volume before. But now that they have Kenneth Walker and his run game going, he's really taking advantage of those play-action opportunities. And for the Raiders... Their run defense was a question for them coming into the season, but they've been a lot better than even I expected. And some of that comes to Tonka Hemingway, their third year defensive tackle, making a leap. They signed a defensive tackle, Fatukasi, who's a six-year veteran. He's been awesome for them. But it's going to be really put to the test against this Chiefs offensive line that's playing maybe... the most physical brand of football in the league right now. They're doing that without Josh Simmons, their left tackle, who they drafted in the first round last year. So it's going to be a difficult challenge going against this run game and this elite quarterback who's really good at sniffing out blitzes. And the Raiders have been able to take advantage of some of these quarterbacks that they face with the blitz. It's going to be much harder. against Mahomes. And defensively, Steve Spagnuolo is one of the best blitzers in the league. I think Kirk Cousins is going to be able to sniff out some of those blitzes. But coverage is going to be much tighter. I expect a pretty high-scoring game, though. They just don't have anybody that could guard Brock Bowers 101. Not a lot of teams do. So I think it's going to be a high-scoring game. But it's by far the Raiders' biggest challenge of the season that they've seen so far. Speaker 3 (19:08) Where do you land on the Brock Purdy conversation? This is an MVP-type start of the year, but obviously
