Thanks so much for being here. Hope you enjoy episode 512. Speaker 1 (1:42) Hey everybody, this is Sophie. This is Big Mama. Hey, it's Melanie. It's Big Mama. This is our second attempt to record because we had some delay slash external noise. Speaker 2 (1:53) Yes, something is going on. It's probably my internet. I feel like that's, it's for sure the yard guy with the blower. So it just, you know, it is what it is. It actually is oddly quiet here today for a Monday. Speaker 1 (2:06) Yeah, it's actually way more quiet right now than it was like... two minutes ago. I don't know what that's about. Yeah, let's hope it lasts. Let's count it all joy. And we had started to talk about when we decided to punt about just how delighted we are about college football season, one being here. Yeah. To providing shenanigans and also hijinks. That's right to enjoy from afar. And, and three, we still have so much of it to go. So what a time. Speaker 2 (2:37) It's just I was like the fact like I sat because I was home this weekend, which I'm gonna say, I loved that A &M did. I thought it looked awesome. I love the red, white and blue stadium. I love when we lean into the patriotism. I thought that was great. It was also at 11. And so I've never been so happy to just see. something on my television screen Speaker 1 (2:54) as Speaker 2 (2:55) I sat in my pajamas in the air conditioning. Speaker 1 (2:58) Yes. Speaker 2 (2:59) But I just thought, man, this is the best time of the year. And we're just at the beginning. You know what I mean? And things have already gone off the rails. So I'm like, what more could you ask for in a college football season? Here we are just in the early, early days of it all. Speaker 1 (3:15) Well, OK, so Saturday morning I had edits for the cookbook that I was working on over the weekend. And so I started working on them probably Wednesday. I was out of town Thursday. I worked on them Friday. And then when I got up Saturday, I came in here into my office. I turned on the television and I was like, I'm going to sit here and I'm going to work on edits and I'm going to watch college football. So I saw, but of course I did not watch game day because I've been very clear. I'm not, I'm not messing around with that until they get some things figured out. Yes. So I had it on SEC Nation, which I have some thoughts about that. I'll save those for when we get to that part of the episode. OK. But they were doing a live, well, kind of a remote sort of thing where they do, where they talk to the coach while he's on the field during warm ups. And the coach that they talked to this week was Mike Elko. Oh, OK. I missed that. So I think it was Paul Feinbaum said something about how he was hot just watching Mike Elko because he had on like his favorite long sleeve hoodie situation. Speaker 2 (4:20) Listen, Speaker 1 (4:20) he loves a long sleeve hoodie. Speaker 2 (4:22) He loves every with all Sarge. He's always it's his look. That's Speaker 1 (4:28) So, but they were, they were kind of, they were going back and forth. And it was funny. I mean, he was, he was great about it. It was a lighthearted exchange. Yeah. But then they were kind of asking him, you know, what is, what is your day look like? And he referenced that he has a playlist that he would never disclose the contents of in public. And when I tell you, I have never been more intrigued. Oh, yeah. Like, how do we get a hold of what Mike Elko's game day? playlist is. I Speaker 2 (4:58) know. I'm going to say, I'm just going to go ahead and say, I think it's heavy. on the rap with explicit lyrics. I'm just going to say it. I feel like that's what he listens to. And I think that's, that's his hype music. And I listen, I respect it. Speaker 1 (5:12) I was just, I was so intrigued because he's such a professor, you know, he's such a, he's such a clinician when it comes to football that I, I love this, this other, this alter ego where he's got kind of a foul playlist allegedly that he likes to listen to, to get hyped up for the games. So anyway, listen, Speaker 2 (5:33) I could be wrong. It could be elevation worship. I'm just saying, I doubt that's not what I'm thinking it is. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? I don't mean to Speaker 1 (5:40) presume. Speaker 2 (5:41) I just feel like Speaker 1 (5:42) I know some, listen, I don't. I'm going to say I know some things about Mike. I don't. Speaker 2 (5:47) I Speaker 1 (5:47) don't know him, but I know him. You know what I'm saying? And I think there's an intensity to him behind that professorial demeanor. Speaker 2 (5:55) You know, like he's got his glasses or whatever, but there's a look in his eye. And I think there was some footage of him last year with a chair in the locker room. And I'm like, I see you. I see the fire there. Speaker 2 (6:08) That's just my guess as to what the playlist is. I don't know how we access that. Could we go on Spotify? Is there any way to hack into anybody's Spotify? Speaker 1 (6:15) I'm serious. I'm sure there is. So, but this morning I was, I was working on some podcast related stuff and I turned on. I turned on SEC Network and I was watching SEC this morning with Peter Burns and Chris Doering. And they were talking about the weekend and doing this thing that they do on Mondays where they kind of say something good about every team that won in the SEC. And so they were doing that. And anyway, they had callers call in. And every time, you know, you have a live call in situation, I kind of get like, you just don't know. Anyway, so this man calls in and, you know, I think his name was Bidley. I don't Speaker 2 (6:58) know Speaker 1 (6:58) for sure. It doesn't matter. But he was irate because he said, I want somebody, and he said it about like this, I want somebody to do something about these coaches. He said that Steve Sarkisian didn't have time for Holly Rowe after the game the other night, and they're all just foul-mouthed. Anyway, left it this whole discussion where they were talking about the fact that now they ask him, Peter Burns asked him, he said, have you seen game day? Because do you know that Nick Saban has? some sort of foul language every week, pretty much. Yeah. And so they were talking about, do we like that we see this side of coaches now? Like the more fiery side. Okay. Or do we prefer when we thought that it was just like a gentleman's club? And and I don't think I mind. I mean, like sometimes it feels like theatrics. But but like, I don't I don't know. I feel like they used to maybe not show the coaches on the sidelines when they were unleashing like, you know, a storm of F-bombs. Yeah. But now they do. And I don't. I don't necessarily care. I don't know. I like, I mean, I like Speaker 2 (8:07) the fire. You know what I mean? Like I like the fire. Now I'm going to, we're going to circle back around to Sark and Holly Rowe. Yeah, we are. Speaker 1 (8:13) Again, that's a pinky up situation. That's right. Speaker 2 (8:16) We're Speaker 1 (8:17) going to circle back around. Speaker 2 (8:20) One of the things I don't miss about having a kid going back to school that I have to pack a lunch for is packing the lunch because it's the panic over what do we have for the lunchbox? How can I make sure that these are foods that aren't just traveling back and forth from school to home that they're actually going to eat? How do I know that they're healthy? Like I'm like, this is kind of what you would think it is. I mean, it's very intense. And it's kind of like I saw somebody posted something Saturday morning. And it was like, once again, my mental health is dependent on kids who have to text their mom to learn how to microwave a burrito. And I thought that is the truest thing. And so for these coaches, Perry said that we were watching Saturday night and he said, if my livelihood was dependent on what a bunch of 20 year old guys were going to do every single Speaker 1 (10:55) weekend. I mean, seriously. And I think about what Cole has said to us and what Cole has said many times in different contexts publicly is just how important the relatability is with the coaches. Yeah. And that the. just because I think kids now expect for people to operate on their level and not, whereas, you know, when we were growing up, we felt like we had to, we had to come into a situation with adults and sort of, uh, and please them. I don't Speaker 2 (11:24) know Speaker 1 (11:24) that that's necessarily as much a thing. Uh, so I, I like seeing how coaches how they relate to their players and how they show their players that they're a normal human being with normal human emotion who happens to be in charge of leading them. And I think it's Speaker 2 (11:47) so Speaker 1 (11:47) interesting. Yeah. And Speaker 2 (11:49) I'm not, listen, I live with a man who loves Jesus, but also cusses a little. So it doesn't really offend me. I've just, Speaker 1 (11:55) yes. Well, Speaker 2 (11:56) I'd Speaker 1 (11:56) actually know Melanie. I love Jesus and cuss a little. Well, Speaker 2 (11:59) same, same. I just, I can't, I can't get worked up about it. And I do think that's part of it for me. Like, I think if we think about, oh God, why I can't listen. Why can't I think of his name? Yes. The Speaker 1 (12:14) coach of LSU last year. Brian. Brian Kelly. Brian Kelly. Memory flakes. I didn't eat my memory flakes this morning. Speaker 2 (12:27) that's part of the interesting thing of watching football is because you can see him and be like his players are not responding to what he is he is telling them they are not they are not open they are shut down he is not doing this right and so I think it's interesting to see the way different coaches I like that part of the game I do too because you can see when the players are really dialed in and they may not like what the coach is telling them but you can also see from the body language if it's hitting home you know what I mean so I like that Speaker 1 (12:52) Yeah, we actually had a discussion yesterday. We went to brunch with my sister and Barry. And we were talking about the games. And I'm not going to name this situation yet. Speaker 2 (13:02) But Speaker 1 (13:02) I said, watching that, I said, it was clear to me that that particular head coach. could not convince a kitten to leave a paper bag. Look, it just, it's not, it's not in his sort of natural giftings to relate to kids. And it kind of hurts you to watch it. Anyway, I don't Speaker 2 (13:26) know. Speaker 1 (13:26) I just thought that was an interesting discussion. Like, do we want to see what we get to see now? And my answer is yes. I like to see it. I enjoy seeing it. And because I think you get a whole other angle in terms of what kind of leadership is working in that particular program. Speaker 2 (13:48) Totally agree. Totally agree. Okay, so let's get into it. Let's talk about the fact, and I just have to say, that I woke up yesterday in a world where my arch nemesis, the Texas Longhorns, are now the number one team in the nation. Speaker 1 (14:03) And I'm telling you, at the end of that game, I thought they're going to be the number one team in the nation. Yeah. And I told David yesterday morning, I was like, I know Melanie's sad, but it makes for good podcasting. So bring it. It does. Speaker 2 (14:17) And I'm going to tell you, I went through a lot of stages of grief. Because first of all, let's not even pretend that I was doing anything other than hate watching that game on Saturday Speaker 1 (14:25) night. Speaker 2 (14:25) Absolutely. Speaker 1 (14:26) And we texted a little bit during that game. We did. And I Speaker 2 (14:30) was filled with joy. The first half, I was filled with joy. That things were imploding in Austin just the way that Cam Coleman interception that bounced off his chest. I don't know if anything had ever brought me much so much joy. I was like this. You paid him six million dollars for that. And I was I was filled with joy. And so then when the second half started, I felt like I started to have some concerns. It just felt like I felt. I felt like Ryan Day went to the locker room and was like, yeah, good enough. You know what I Speaker 1 (15:05) mean? Doing great, guys. Thumbs up. Like, good Speaker 2 (15:08) enough. Like, I do have to. Cole put something on his Instagram yesterday, and it was somebody with a dog barking on the plane. And I said, that is unacceptable. And then he sent me a thing, and he said there was also a guy, like, moaning like he was about to lose a kidney, and I don't know what was happening. And I said, Speaker 1 (15:22) was it Ryan Day? Speaker 2 (15:24) You know? Is he on the plane with you? Because he's got to be. I hope. He should be disgusted Sunday morning. So anyway, but what I will say, I did watch Game Day on Saturday morning because, and I knew it was an Austin, and I knew it was going to make me angry, but I'm not any better than Mabel. I wanted to be angry. Speaker 2 (15:46) I wanted to roll my eyes at it all. Yeah. You know, they've got Matthew McConaughey. They've got Glenn Powell doing their game day stuff. And I was like, what, you know, what are you going to do? A &M, we had Johnny Manziel who couldn't show up. You know, it's just sometimes you're just like, it just is what it is. And I just had to accept it. And I have to say, and listen, you know that I don't say this lightly, but I'm like, they. The Longhorns did it. They deserved that win. They hung in. They played tough. I can't even be mad at their number one ranking. And so my solace is right now is ultimately it's better for the conference. You know what I'm saying? It's better for the SEC. That's Speaker 1 (16:23) right. That's how you have to look at it sometimes. Listen. So kudos to you for how you're processing this. Speaker 2 (16:29) Well, listen, and here's what I had to remember, too. I'm like, the Aggies also won on Saturday. It's not like we lost and the Longhorns won. I was like, we're a top 10 team. I used to dream of days like this. You know what I mean? So, like, I don't want to miss the joy of where we are. And I'm like, at the end of the day, everybody
