Speaker 1 (0:00) Hello and welcome to Smosh Reads Reddit Stories. I'm Shane and today's theme is overreacting. Stories where people are maybe overreacting, maybe they're not. I'm joined by two people who I can barely get a reaction out of ever. Trevor and Jared. Speaker 2 (0:15) Yeah, I never overreact. I pretty much probably underreact. I'm really nonchalant these days. Okay. Yeah, I'm really chill, especially in traffic. Speaker 3 (0:25) I don't start doing voices. Yeah, you don't yell. Speaker 1 (0:30) Do you think you guys are overreactors? Speaker 2 (0:32) Yeah. Speaker 1 (0:33) Yeah? We are Speaker 2 (0:34) performers. Yeah. And Speaker 1 (0:36) you're like performers and chef. Speaker 2 (0:38) Yeah. I feel like that's... Oh my God, chefs, that seems like your whole thing. I don't know. I think probably, yeah. I mean, when we're doing videos, I'm probably overreacting to stuff more often than not. But I think in my normal everyday life, I feel like I'm pretty like level-headed and chill. Yeah. There are things though that'll get me. Honestly, in traffic, I'll get cut off by someone and it's like maybe not even that bad. And it'll be like, I think that you should, I think Speaker 1 (1:02) that you should Speaker 2 (1:03) be Speaker 1 (1:03) put Speaker 2 (1:04) away for Speaker 1 (1:04) life. Speaker 3 (1:05) I think you should be put away Speaker 1 (1:06) for life. You should die for sure. I do think I underreact a lot in my regular life. Oh, interesting. I do. I do. I think I'm someone who I can let people. walk all over me sometimes. Speaker 2 (1:18) I think I've Speaker 1 (1:18) allowed that in the past. Speaker 2 (1:20) Good to know. Because it's like Path Speaker 1 (1:22) of Lisa resistance sometimes. So then luckily, like with friends and my wife and even family, they'll be like, you should react more to that. And Speaker 2 (1:31) I'm like, Speaker 1 (1:31) okay. All right. Speaker 2 (1:33) I'll react Speaker 1 (1:34) a Speaker 2 (1:34) little Speaker 1 (1:35) bit. Totally. But we're Speaker 2 (1:36) going Speaker 1 (1:36) to be reading mostly stories from the subreddit Am I Overreacting? And I feel like most of the stories, they're not. In fact, a lot of times I think they're very much underreacting, depending though. So we'll see. We'll see. Let's dive in. Speaker 2 (1:52) I'm ready. Okay. Speaker 1 (1:53) First story comes from Am I Overreacting? And it was posted only two days ago as of reading this. My friend just got engaged, but I found a Reddit post from his fiancee trashing the ring and insulting him. Speaker 2 (2:07) Do Speaker 1 (2:07) I tell him or am I overreacting? Speaker 1 (2:12) For context, most of us have had concerns about his fiance for a while. We don't feel like she has his best interests at heart, and the relationship has seemed unhealthy from the outside. Our friend also seems like he's been struggling mentally, and some of us feel like she has become very controlling, including around things like what he eats and other day-to-day choices, even though she frames it as being for his health. A few days ago, he proposed and gave her a really beautiful, very distinctive engagement ring. She publicly posted excited engagement content on social media so everything looked great on the surface. Then, by random chance, our friend came across a post on Reddit in an engagement ring community. They recognized the ring immediately because it's extremely unique and there were other identifying details that matched as well. She does very unique, hyper-detailed nail art. We couldn't believe she would post the picture with her nails in the photo at all, given how unique they are. In the post, she was criticizing the ring pretty harshly and saying some really disrespectful things about her fiance. She was mocking his taste, calling him incompetent, and making comments that made it sound like her issue might not actually be the ring at all, but the relationship itself. Speaker 3 (3:23) A Speaker 1 (3:23) lot of replies were basically saying the same thing, that her reaction sounded deeper than just disappointment over jewelry, and more like resentment toward the person she's marrying. Now we feel stuck. Speaker 1 (3:49) Wow. Speaker 3 (4:03) Okay, okay, I feel so strong. I feel so strong. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know if I would live this advice, but you have to show him. I Speaker 1 (4:11) think Speaker 3 (4:11) you have to show him. Speaker 1 (4:13) Also, though, she posted this on a public forum. Yes, that's crazy. This is for the public. To me, it's like this isn't some secret anymore. She made it not a secret. You're allowed to show him. Speaker 2 (4:24) Yeah. It would feel differently maybe if it was like a private conversation where she voiced some of these things and then it's like, oh, do I tell him? But yeah, if she's posting online about it and you know 100%, you have to tell him. Like that's just so disrespectful. Speaker 1 (4:37) Yeah. And it's what is the tough reality? Because like I think everyone can relate to some degree is like he may not like be on your side. You might show him and he might defend his. All you can do, you can just show. Speaker 2 (4:51) But Speaker 1 (4:51) all you can do is show. You can just be like, hey, I'm telling you a thing, and it's up to you now. But you Speaker 3 (4:57) should Speaker 1 (4:58) clue him in. Speaker 3 (4:59) Imagine all your friends passed this around and then went to your wedding. Oh, yeah. Nothing Speaker 1 (5:06) worse. You can't come across a Reddit post, show it to other friends, and then not show it to him. This Speaker 3 (5:11) was two days ago. Keep that Speaker 1 (5:12) in mind. Because now. Things can still be made right. Because, yeah, but I agree with what you're saying because now that you've spread it around the friend group, now it's almost a betrayal as a friend that you're all talking about this and not including him. It's like you've got to just clue him in. Speaker 2 (5:26) Yeah. Whoa. I think however painful, like the risk of however painful it might be outweighs the risk of, I don't know, something far worse, like the resentment continuing to build, them getting married, and then it being way more difficult Speaker 1 (5:40) down the line. Speaker 2 (5:41) Yeah. You're not interfering Speaker 1 (5:42) because she, She posted it. She posted it. Yeah. It'd be the same if it was a private conversation. If the fiance came and like showed you the ring and was like, I think this is disgusting. Honestly, I fucking hate him. It's like, well, you're putting me in this situation now so I can talk to him. Yeah. You got to, I mean, I wonder how awful she must be. Yeah. This sounds really bad. It sounds pretty rough if she's doing that. Speaker 2 (6:06) Yeah. And if she's already, because I said like, we already have had issues with her or like, feelings, negative feelings about her. I mean, this just seems like if it's in a series of disrespectful things that she's doing, you have to tell him. Speaker 1 (6:20) Okay, so OP is active in these comments underneath this post. Oh, Speaker 3 (6:26) okay, okay. So Speaker 1 (6:27) the verdict is not overreacting, obviously. Someone said, send the link to your friend, not overreacting. You are looking out for their best interests, and it's not easy to say off your own back, but the evidence, like the link, they can make a clear decision without fallout back on you. Speaker 3 (6:42) That's an awful message to receive. A link that's Speaker 1 (6:45) going to ruin your future. I think you need to send the link and be like, hey, man. You need to print it out. You need to take them to lunch. You Speaker 3 (6:52) need to pay for that lunch, and you need to hand them a printout. You can't send the link. Yeah, well. Speaker 2 (6:57) Because they're going to open it at the bank. They're going to open it. Speaker 3 (7:00) They're going to open it. You know what I mean? They need to be sat down. You cannot send them a link. I have to pay charges for what? Hold Speaker 1 (7:07) on. Speaker 2 (7:08) I'm getting Speaker 3 (7:08) a text from my friend. What? Speaker 2 (7:10) Reading it in traffic. Like, you're checking it. Speaker 1 (7:12) Oh, my God. Somebody read the title. Now I'm overreacting. I would say to this person, you need to screenshot that Reddit post before she deletes it. Speaker 2 (7:22) You need Speaker 1 (7:23) to be on top of it. Yeah, that's true. Okay, OP responded to that comment saying, she deleted the post, unfortunately. Wow. Speaker 2 (7:32) Come on. Come Speaker 1 (7:34) on. Speaker 2 (7:34) I'm a veteran at Speaker 1 (7:35) this shit. You need to Speaker 2 (7:35) screenshot it. Screenshot it immediately. She deleted Speaker 1 (7:38) the post, unfortunately. We took screenshots of everything so we could show him. Okay. I'm surprised by the number of not overreacting. I don't think we are overreacting, but everyone is very torn on whether to approach him with this. It feels more like a moral dilemma to us. On the one hand, we don't want to hurt our friend based on a post someone made in the heat of the moment. On the other hand, what she said not only in the post, but some of the comments was pretty brutal and we feel like he should know. Someone said, if you do tell him, be prepared for him to shoot the messenger. Speaker 1 (8:10) That is a harsh reality of this stuff, though. I feel like it's true. Like, everybody knows, like, when someone starts dating someone and they're wrapped up. And you're just like, Speaker 2 (8:17) you're Speaker 1 (8:18) being manipulated, but you're Speaker 2 (8:20) all in on this. So, like... But it seems like with how severe the situation is, it feels like even if there is that moment in the beginning of him being upset, like, surely Speaker 1 (8:30) he'll come back around. Like, once he realizes, it's like, oh, you had my best interest at heart. I think it's one of those things where it's like, you need to be a good friend even if... It's almost like that is the true test of being good friend, like doing the right thing even if they're gonna be mad at you. Yeah. Right? Also, I think if your friend is mad at you for that, you need a new friend. It's on them. And it's like, give them a chance to come around, like to wake up. But like, if time goes by and they don't. Because I remember I was in a relationship, this was forever ago. And a friend of mine, while I was in the relationship and wrapped up in it, a friend of mine was like, hey, I don't like... how you are with her. Like, like I don't think she's a good influence, that kind of stuff. And I remember at the time being like, no, I think like, it's actually, it's good. Like, no, this is like, I defended it. And then after I was single again, I was like, Hey, thank you for like that. That did deep down help at a certain point. Um, even if I wasn't like super receptive in the moment. Exactly. Yeah. Okay, so Opie responded to the shoot your messenger comment and said, okay, yes, this is exactly what we were worried about. He has seen past all the red flags at this point and ignored things that I personally would have sprinted as fast as I could in the opposite direction. Wow. Who's to say that us coming to him with this is going to change his mind at all? We are worried he will double down and tell us to go fuck ourselves. Speaker 3 (9:50) And he might. He might. But I still think you should do. And then also imagine you can't go to the wedding. At that point, I don't think if you tell him you can go. Speaker 1 (9:57) Do you Speaker 3 (9:57) want to Speaker 1 (9:57) go to this wedding with her? Yeah. Speaker 2 (9:59) I'm so curious what like some of the other things that she's done have been like. I'd love more context for this. I'd also Speaker 3 (10:06) love to see the ring. I do want to see it. Speaker 1 (10:09) Lastly, someone said not overreacting. Tell your friend. That way he can make an informed decision on whether or not to continue the relationship. If I were you, I'd screenshot the whole post or screen record it in case she takes it down so you have hard proof. I am a woman, and if I were disappointed in either the relationship or the ring, I'd go straight to my partner with my grievances, not the internet. She sounds incredibly immature. The last thing you want is for your friend to suffer unnecessarily in his life because his friends were afraid of overreacting to a serious situation. Opie responded, I agree. Thank you for your point about going to the internet. Hearing it said that way really does highlight the degree of immaturity. And that's where it ends. We don't have an update or anything because it's so recent. But maybe by the time this airs, there'll be updates and everything. So we might eventually get back to it. Hopefully they make the right call. I don't know. I Speaker 3 (10:58) think as soon as you post something, you kind of have to expect. Or at least prepare for the worst. Yeah. Speaker 1 (11:07) And Speaker 3 (11:07) that's what's, yeah. Yeah. Have you ever subtweeted anybody and they got back? Speaker 1 (11:13) No, I don't, I'm not like, I don't Speaker 3 (11:15) sub. They figured it out? Like, yeah. And also I subtweeted Speaker 2 (11:20) in the moment. Speaker 3 (11:21) It's like, and then that's when I learned, like, if you're going to do it, just wait like six days. Yeah. And then do it. Like get enough distance between plausible deniability. Yeah. But I was just fully like in the audience at an improv show, just like. Speaker 2 (11:35) That's really good. Speaker 1 (11:39) I'm not good at that. I can't do that because I think that I'm too anxious of a person. That would be like, they're going to know. So I either have to be direct or I have to fully let it go. It's one or the other for me. This is Speaker 2 (11:52) a tough situation. It's really hard. I would hope that despite him looking past all the red flags, I would hope that... Because an engagement is a really big thing. I mean, like, so maybe it would be significant enough that he'd be like, oh, this is like maybe a serious situation. She's being really awful about this thing that like I really put a lot of like thought and care into. Like maybe it. could be the final straw or the thing that opens his eyes. And like, yeah, Speaker 1 (12:19) I think you have to take that chance. Like as Speaker 2 (12:21) a friend, you have to like let him know. Cause yeah, I mean, you're gonna like carry that guilt if you end up just saying nothing and Speaker 1 (12:29) they Speaker 2 (12:29) do get married and then something blows up way bigger in the future. It's like, maybe if we just told him about this, like he Speaker 1 (12:35) could have figured it out sooner. Oh gosh. It's, I can tell it's not that they're like, oh, I don't want to interfere. They're so certain that it's not going to affect him. Speaker 2 (12:45) Yeah. Speaker 1 (12:46) Which is tough, but I still think you should do it. Speaker 2 (12:48) Yeah. Speaker 1 (12:48) And also, I think if Speaker 3 (12:49) you have the screenshot of the post, you know where to find me. Speaker 1 (12:53) Let Jared handle this for you. Speaker 3 (12:55) I do want to see the ring. Yeah, Speaker 2 (12:57) I'll tell him. You want me to come in from a stranger? Speaker 1 (13:02) I'll let him know. It's like, oh, the ring, he went to Jared's. It's like, oh, and the breakup, he went to Jared's. You can high Speaker 3 (13:10) five. Speaker 1 (13:11) Hell yeah. All right. Let's move on to our next story. This one comes from am I overreacting this was also posted like a week ago. Whoa Speaker 2 (13:20) Yeah, Speaker 1 (13:21) who's directing this episode? She got these fresh great work. It's Speaker 2 (13:26) nice when because sometimes I'm like dang What was I up to six years ago? What was what was my life like but now it's like yeah I Speaker 1 (13:31) kind of know what I know to a week ago. I know who I am, right? Speaker 2 (13:35) Okay, Speaker 1 (13:37) am I overreacting by refusing to keep picking up breakfast for my co-worker? Speaker 1 (13:46) I, an 18-year-old girl, work in an office with about 15 other people. There's a cafe along the way to work that I usually grab a coffee and something to eat on the way to work a few times a week. One of my coworkers, Mark, not his real name, obviously, found out about the cafe a few months ago when he asked where I got my food from. He then told me he had been wanting to try them, but it was completely out of the way from his normal commute. A few days later, I was heading into work and he messaged me asking if I could pick him up one of those bacon and egg rolls. I was already going to stop there, so I said, sure. He paid me back when I got to work and that was it. A week or so later, he asked again, same thing. And I was already planning on stopping there, so I didn't mind. After that, it started becoming a regular thing. Maybe once or twice a week, he would ask if I was stopping at the cafe and if I could grab him something. I never really thought much about it as it was literally on my way in and he always paid me back. Although this then led to him asking for specifics. For example, the bacon and egg roll, but only if they were fresh. Otherwise, he would want the sausage muffin instead, as well as sometimes wanting a cinnamon bun also. Still, I didn't really mind as it wasn't any more effort for me. However, the first thing that started to annoy me was when he started messaging me before I had even left my flat. Speaker 2 (15:04) I'd wake up to messages such as, I'd Speaker 1 (15:07) wake up to messages such as, morning, bake an egg roll, please. No! Speaker 2 (15:11) No. Speaker 1 (15:12) No. No questions or asking if I was even planning to stop in, just putting his order in. Oh. Even so, I still would usually. She's on maternity leave. She doesn't work Speaker 2 (15:24) there anymore. Speaker 1 (15:25) Hey, where are you? Even so, I would still usually just reply yes. Then one morning, I wasn't actually going to stop at the cafe because I was already running late. I responded to his message and told him I wasn't able to. He then responded saying something along the lines of asking if I could just still swing by and in return, he'd send me a bit extra for the trouble. I said no because I was already running late and obviously didn't want to get in more trouble walking into the office with breakfast in hand. He seemed a bit annoyed but dropped it. Although after this, I started noticing that he would stop asking whether I was going to the cafe and instead just assumed I was. This then led to me getting further messages such as, two bacon egg rolls, please, or cinnamon bun, thanks. Now, last week, I had a pretty rough morning and didn't stop at the bakery. I again got to work late, went to my desk straight away, and after about 15 minutes, Mark came over and asked where his breakfast was. I said I hadn't gone to the cafe this morning. He looked confused and said something like, Oh, I thought you were still getting mine. I told him I hadn't as I didn't stop. And he responded with the fact I normally do so. He just assumed. I told him I had never actually agreed to get it every morning and that I was only doing it because I happened to stop there a few times a week. He then said it wasn't a big deal and that I was making it into one because it literally takes no extra time. Oh my God. This brushed me the wrong way, but I said I don't mind doing it occasionally when I'm stopping there, but I don't want to be responsible for buying him breakfast. Our conversation ended with him roughly saying not to worry about it. Anyway, later that day, another one of my coworkers said that Mark thought I had gotten really weird about the whole breakfast thing. Apparently he told them that I had offered to pick things up for him and that now I'm acting like I'm doing him a massive favor. I told this other coworker that I never offered to do it as some ongoing thing. I just said yes to his messages when I was able to and had planned on stopping there. They said that they could see both sides and that if I was already going there, it seemed pretty harmless, which I do understand. It's not like he's asking me to drive across town or anything, but at the same time, I feel like there's a difference between doing someone a favor occasionally and being their breakfast delivery driver. Maybe I should have said something earlier instead of going along with it, but I didn't think it would escalate at the time. Am I overreacting by refusing to keep picking up breakfast for my coworker when I don't have any intention of stopping there myself? Speaker 1 (17:51) That's not at all. This is crazy. That guy is crazy. Also, why can't he get his own breakfast? I know. It's like, there's got to be other breakfast spots, man. Or just go to Speaker 2 (18:02) that. Go there. Speaker 1 (18:03) You have to return a favor at some point. He says it's out of his way, but it's like, all right, like, I don't know. Leave Speaker 2 (18:08) 10 minutes earlier. Sorry, like, Speaker 1 (18:09) this is her journey to work. She gets to decide what she does with it. No, Speaker 2 (18:15) this is like, feels just like a classic case of like, oh, like. Woman doing something nice and then he is just like so like self-centered and in his own world that like in his mind He's like, oh, yeah, she offered to get me something like it's crazy that she's like acting like it's some big deal. Yeah, and it's Oh my God. Speaker 1 (18:32) To detect, to be like, bake an egg roll, please. Speaker 2 (18:34) That's crazy. I'm like, Speaker 1 (18:36) hey, I'd be like, that's where it ends for me. That's so crazy. You've gotten too comfortable. Yeah. No. Speaker 2 (18:40) No, if he was
