Speaker 1 (1:14) Thank Speaker 3 (1:15) you. Speaker 6 (1:16) From the brains behind Brains On, it's Smash Boom Speaker 1 (1:20) Best. The Speaker 3 (1:21) show for people with big opinions. Speaker 1 (1:25) Hi, I'm Molly Bloom, and this is Smash Boom Best, the show where we take two things, smash them together, and ask you to decide which one is best. Today's debate is a royal rivalry between two regal leaders. One of them is the wayfinding chief of Motunui, and the other, a former queen who can control the ice and snow. That's right. It's Moana versus Elsa. Here to rep the mighty Moana is writer, director, and my brother, Mickey Bloom. Speaker 4 (1:56) Hey, everybody, and you're welcome. Speaker 1 (1:59) And here to cast a spell for Elsa is writer. funny person, and my sister, Delia Bloom. Which Bloom will win and how? And in addition to a brother-sister debating duo, we have a brother-sister judging team as well. We've got Nate and Julia from San Francisco. They both started debating in middle school. Nate loves theater and creative writing, and Julia is about to head off to college. Hi, Nate and Julia. Hi. I'm so excited to be here again. We are so excited that you're back and you brought your brother this time. So, Julia, you judged a debate for us last season. And since then, you won an ESPY award and it was presented to you by Alyssa Liu and Billie Jean King. Oh, my goodness. What was the award for? It Speaker 7 (2:45) was for a program I started for teen girl athletes basically supporting their mental and physical health called Hitting the Wall because I'm a triathlete myself. Speaker 1 (2:53) Whoa, that's amazing. Okay, so tell us what a triathlete does. Speaker 7 (2:57) Basically, we do three sports in one. So we start in a lake or the ocean swimming, then we get on our bikes, and then finally we start running. It definitely hurts by the end of the races, though. I Speaker 1 (3:08) can imagine. And so you started a program to make sure athletes are taking care of their mental health, too. So what does that mean? Speaker 7 (3:16) So we work with schools and different community centers and clubs to go in and basically take workshops about taking care of your menstrual health, make sure you're fueling for those longer workouts, and also just talking about your feelings and talking to your coaches. That Speaker 1 (3:29) is so cool. Speaker 7 (3:31) So is it a menstrual Speaker 1 (3:32) health program or a mental health program or both? Speaker 7 (3:34) It's everything because there's a lot of different aspects to being Speaker 1 (3:37) an athlete. That is really cool. And so, Nate, I understand you are also an award winner. You won a national award for your story, Mouse Problem. Congratulations. Can you please tell us what Mouse Problem is about? Speaker 3 (3:50) So, yeah, it's about a group of intelligent mice terrorizing a cat to take control of the kitchen pantry. Speaker 1 (3:57) Oh, what do they do to that poor cat? A Speaker 3 (4:00) lot of things. They have little toothpick spears. They attach water guns on wheels. Speaker 1 (4:05) Oh, my gosh. That sounds great, like Tom and Jerry, but in an amazing short story. So you've both... done debate. Tell me if you debate at home. Speaker 7 (4:16) We definitely debate. I think we've been debating ever since Nate could talk. Speaker 3 (4:20) Yeah, and she's been losing since I could talk. Speaker 1 (4:24) So what is your strategy, Nate? You're the winner, apparently. So what is your strategy? Speaker 3 (4:30) I think in the end, a superior intelligence always triumphs. But if I had to say strategy, I'd say using metaphors. Those can be helpful. Speaker 1 (4:39) Excellent. And what do you think, Julia? Is he winning all the time or no? Speaker 7 (4:43) I definitely wouldn't say that. He has won some debates. And I think another important thing for arguments is having a good sense of humor, especially not being a sore loser. Speaker 1 (4:52) Very, very good advice. Well, we have an award-winning brother and sister here, but which of my siblings will win today? We're going to find out soon. But first, the rules of the game. Every debate consists of four rounds. The Declaration of Greatness, the Micro Round, the Sneak Attack, and the Final Six. After each round, our judges, Nate and Julia, will award points to the team that impresses them the most, but they'll keep their decisions top secret until the end of the debate. Listeners, We want you to judge too. Mark down your points as you listen. At the end of the show, head to our website, smashboom.org, and vote for whichever team you think won. Okay, Delia, Mickey, Julia, and Nate, are you ready? Yes. Yes, Speaker 3 (5:36) I'm ready. So Speaker 1 (5:37) ready. Speaker 3 (5:38) Yeah, I'm totally ready. Speaker 1 (5:39) Okay, then it's time for the Declaration of Greatness. Speaker 1 (5:45) In this round, our debaters will present a well-crafted, immersive argument in favor of their side. Then they'll each have 30 seconds to rebut their opponent's statements. We flipped a coin. And Delia, you're up first. Show us why the cold never bothers you anyway. Speaker 2 (6:02) you Speaker 1 (6:03) Welcome back to Speaker 2 (6:04) Cold Ones, the show where we eat increasingly colder popsicles with famous people. We are so lucky to have today's guest with us. She is modern Disney royalty, the Snow Queen herself, Elsa! Speaker 2 (6:20) Hello, Delia. So happy to be here. Our first popsicle is zero degrees Fahrenheit and cherry flavored. Let's lick it. Speaker 5 (6:31) Delicious. Not too cold, and I can't wait for my tongue to change color. Now, Elsa, there are Speaker 2 (6:37) so many wonderful things to say about you. First of all, you have superpowers. So cool. And I love that your story is about overcoming insecurity by embracing what makes you different. Exactly. I Speaker 5 (6:52) was always told to hide my powers so I don't scare other people, which was very hard for me. I bet. Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know. Right. You got it. My life was ruled by fear and misunderstanding, which only made things worse. And I felt so much shame. I Speaker 2 (7:12) know what you mean. Like for you, it's your ice powers. For me, it's my loud burps when I eat cold things. But I'm sure we've all had things we felt embarrassed about or didn't want to reveal to other people. Anyone from the audience? Speaker 2 (7:30) Hi, I'm Snowin, Speaker 5 (7:32) longtime watcher, first-time participant. As you can see, I'm a snowman. I get embarrassed because my nose is a mushroom instead of a carrot, but I've Speaker 2 (7:45) learned to appreciate this fun guy on my face. Speaker 2 (7:50) Amazing! Now for our next popsicle. This one is negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit and a fudgesicle. Speaker 5 (8:00) Ooh, I felt a shiver go down my spine. Speaking of shivers, I love that you have made snow and winter look so fun and glamorous. Snow and cold are great. They can be beautiful, too. I mean, did you see that ice castle I made? Stunning. Speaker 2 (8:18) My power flurries Speaker 5 (8:20) through the air into the ground. Maybe, can you not do that? The singing my songs thing? I'll try. Thank you. And snow and cold can be so fun. Have you all met Olaf? Speaker 2 (8:40) Oh my goodness, Olaf just ran through the studio riding Sven. I guess they couldn't stay. But dang, those two guys are so funny and helpful. A little better than friends like, I don't know, a chicken with no brain and a little piggy? Some might say that. Speaker 2 (9:00) Let's go to our next popsicle. This one is negative 20 degrees Fahrenheit and a creamsicle. Speaker 2 (9:08) Ooh, getting chilly. Speaking of which, I recently rewatched Frozen on a 100 degree day, and it was extremely refreshing to imagine myself in Arendelle with you and Anna. Which leads me to my next point. I am absolutely inspired by the relationship you have with your sister, Anna. I Speaker 5 (9:30) love my sister. Speaker 5 (9:33) Delicious. She is very important to me. I felt so alone dealing with my powers by myself. A kingdom of isolation, and it looks like I'm the queen. Wait, you said no singing. Sorry. It's fine. But I was able to learn from Anna that love overcomes fear. And whether you have a sister from biology or circumstance, or just anyone you love like a sibling, we can all relate to the power of that relationship. Speaker 2 (10:02) Another thing I love about you is that it wasn't love for some man that saved the day. It was love for your sister. I also happen to have a sister who I love and who I saw Frozen with. You may have heard of her. the host of Brains On and Smash Boom Best, Speaker 5 (10:19) Molly Bloom. I love those shows, but I've never had the privilege of meeting her. I'd be happy to make an introduction if you can introduce Speaker 2 (10:27) me to Anna and Kristoff. Sister Swap! Okay, now for our final popsicle. This one is negative 30 degrees Fahrenheit and is pure ice. Speaker 5 (10:40) Uh-oh, Speaker
