Speaker 1 (0:01) you Speaker 1 (0:08) My name is June and you are listening to Sleep Tight Stories. Speaker 1 (0:16) Sylvia Speaker 2 (0:17) is on a walk with her parents and she is tired. She sees a squirrel and wonders if the squirrel can help her find a shortcut to the lookout. Speaker 2 (0:29) Sylvia remembers her dad told her if she ever gets lost to hug a tree or hug a map. She can't remember. Speaker 2 (0:39) When she smells something really good, she looks through the trees and sees a little green gate. Speaker 2 (0:48) A bear has my sneakers. Speaker 2 (0:57) No one sets out to get lost, at least not usually, unless you know they wanted to get lost so they didn't have to go to French class. That happens. But French class wasn't in the woods and had nothing to do with the squirrel that Sylvia was thinking of following. Speaker 2 (1:19) It was a super cute squirrel, and it was sitting on a stump right beside the trail she was supposed to stay on and not dare go off. It was holding something in its teeny weeny hands and looking at her with a kind of squirrel look. like they do in the park, just before they dash off with your favorite pretzels. Speaker 1 (1:43) Maybe if she was Speaker 2 (1:45) a friendly squirrel, she could help her find a shortcut out of this hiking in the woods misadventure. Speaker 2 (1:53) Her legs were gym class tired, and Dad kept saying the lookout was just around the next bend, which he'd said about 20 bends ago. Speaker 2 (2:05) Squirrels live in the woods, right? And they must know a shortcut out of it. How else would they end up in the park? So it made sense to follow the squirrel when it hopped off into the ferns. Speaker 2 (2:20) Except, this one did not seem to know a shortcut. Or if it did, it wasn't sharing. It ran under a log, up a tree, down the other side of the tree, and then it vanished completely. Not exactly friendly at all. Speaker 2 (2:40) Mom, Sylvia called. Dad. Speaker 2 (2:45) A bird answered. That was it. Speaker 2 (2:50) She tried to remember what her dad always said about getting lost. Something about hugging a tree. Or maybe hugging a map? She thought of giving herself a hug. He'd said it in the car, but she'd been watching a very important video of a dog on a skateboard, so she only heard half. Speaker 2 (3:14) She saw a nice-looking tree, one without prickly things, and gave it a hug just in case. Except it was sticky and had ants on it. She wiped her hands on her shorts and kept walking. Speaker 2 (3:31) Her second favorite sneakers were soaked, the ones with the duct tape, and her water bottle only had a drop of water, which she thought she should save. And she'd eaten her granola bar in the car before they'd even parked. This is not a good situation to be in, in the middle of a forest with trees that had ants on them. Speaker 2 (3:55) But then she smelled something which made her tummy make a noise. It wasn't toast, which she loved if it had an inch of peanut butter on it. It sort of smelled like Grandma's kitchen on a Sunday morning. Speaker 2 (4:13) She decided to follow her nose until, through the trees, she saw a little green gate. And as she got closer, she saw behind it was a garden with flowers in wobbly rows. She didn't have much of an opinion on flowers. Speaker 2 (4:33) There was also a vegetable patch with a popsicle stick that said carrots. She ate carrots. That's why she could see all this. Speaker 2 (4:44) Underneath, in giant, scratchy letters, someone had added, Not ready yet. Speaker 2 (4:51) There was some kind of big boxes with bees flying about and a cute little cottage with roses climbing all over the front like they were trying to get inside. Speaker 2 (5:03) Funny thing was, the door to the cottage was wide open. Speaker 2 (5:10) Sylvia stood at the gate for a while. Her mom had rules about strangers' houses. A super bunch of rules. But those were mostly about
