I hope you're having a great start to your Monday, even though the likelihood of me ruining it right now is probably pretty freaking high, whether you are at work, on your way to work, going to school, cleaning the house, working out, wherever you are. It's one that I've chatted with you a little bit about via headline highlights, but I haven't done a big deep dive into it until now just because there was so little information out there. And even so, right now, there still isn't a whole bunch of information, but there is at least more. And there are some theories out there that I do think they're worth discussing. I, of course, will identify what is speculation versus what is fact. But I do think it's important to go over all the possibilities of motive, of backstory, and everything that rolls into it because it helps give us a clearer picture of how this tragedy even happened or why it happened. So today's case is the one of the Michigan family massacre. A man who annihilated his entire family, then turned the weapon on himself, and tried to cover up the evidence. by strategically lighting fires all throughout the house. Now, family annihilator cases have unfortunately been all over everybody's feeds lately. I mean, at least mine, maybe not yours, which... hooray for you if it's not, but I feel as though my feed is just getting flooded with these cases. And so with the case today, like I said, we're going to be talking about one of the more recent cases that has left people with a lot of questions. And it's Speaker 1 (2:52) one Speaker 2 (2:52) that I just felt like I really needed to come on here as your true crime bestie and break it down for you as best as I can. And this is the case of the Karol Kiewicz family who lived in Grand Haven, Michigan. So a little bit of the backstory. On July 24th, firefighters were called to a home after there were reports of smoke coming from the property. However, once they then entered the property, what they found inside was absolutely devastating because an entire family of eight people had been shot and killed. And pretty early on, investigators said that 47-year-old Chris Karolkiewicz, who was the father and the husband of this family, is the one who was behind all of it. That he shot and killed his wife, Mandy, and their six children. Before then, setting multiple fires all throughout the home and ultimately taking his own life. Now, while that alone is a huge, unimaginable tragedy, the more that the investigators uncovered, the more complicated this case became. There became questions about the timeline, the motive, the family's history, Chris's employment, and if that had any sort of role in this, the marriage itself, and even some claims about a final email that was sent. An email that may shed a little bit of light on what was going through Chris's mind when all of this unfolded. And look, that's not completely abnormal, right? In a lot of these cases, not necessarily family annihilator cases, but well, let me rephrase that. Not necessarily in family annihilator cases where they end up taking their own life too, but in family annihilator cases elsewhere, it's not uncommon that a note is left behind or an email or a wedding ring left out on the table. Little things that help you start to piece together, okay. What was the frame of mind here? Obviously, this person was trying to distance themselves or creating a disconnect with the family itself. Either in some cases, we've unfortunately heard where the sheets are pulled over the loved one's faces because they do want to create that distance and that disconnect so they don't have to see their loved one's faces. So the reason I bring all of that up is because this email that people are saying. It sheds a lot of light on his mental state and what the potential motive and underlying factors were. It does raise some questions, and I want to talk through that with you. So that's what we are going to be doing today, and I know I already mentioned it, so I'm sorry to, like, rehash it. But basically, my goal is to go through everything that I've learned about this case. What happened inside the home? What led the investigators to determine that it was Chris behind all of this? What the investigators have uncovered since this horrific discovery? And of course, most importantly, what could have led an entire family of eight to being killed in a single night? So let's start with the timeline. It all started on Friday, July 24th, 2026. On the morning of July 24th, around 8.49 a.m., first responders were called to a neighborhood in West Michigan. This was after somebody had reported smelling smoke in the area. Now, at first, firefighters could not find an active house fire. So they ended up investigating a little bit, but they couldn't find an active fire, so they left. But then, a few hours later, they started getting more calls and more calls, saying, oh, now there is white smoke that is coming from a very specific home in the Grand Haven area. Speaker 5 (6:28) Okay, 911, what's the address of your emergency? Speaker 6 (6:34) Riverside Trail in Grand Haven. Speaker 5 (6:38) Riverside Trail. Okay, what's your first and last name with spelling? Speaker 5 (6:49) And a good callback number in case we get disconnected. Okay, tell me exactly what happened. Speaker 6 (6:58) We were taking our dogs for a walk, and there is smoke coming out of this house, and my boyfriend's pounding on the door of this car in the driveway, but nobody's answering. And there's smoke coming out of a window. Speaker 5 (7:08) That is correct. And you guys are at that residence now, and you can't make contact? Speaker 6 (7:18) Yes, yeah, we're trying to knock on the door. I know they do have two dogs. Okay. Speaker 5 (7:25) Give me one second here, okay? Speaker 6 (7:27) Yep. Speaker 5 (7:31) What color is the smoke? Speaker 6 (7:33) It is white, it looks like. It smells almost electrical. I think, I don't know, it's coming out of one of the windows on the first. So Speaker 2 (7:42) when crews were dispatched and they went back out to that neighborhood a few hours later, this was 8, 9, 10, 11, about three hours later, they went out at 11.46 a.m. And this time they found the house that was on fire. And they started working immediately to put out this fire. Not only put it out, but starting from the outside before then entering the inside to put it out. Because they knew on approach, they needed to contain this as fast as possible. So the first step was, okay, let's put all of these flames out that we can see on the exterior of the house. Then safely and securely, we will work our way inside the house to put out those flames. see if anybody was inside, see if we can save anybody, and really work from the outside in. But as I mentioned, when they then entered the home, that's when they made the horrifying discovery. A family of eight, all dead. And here's what struck them as odd. This family wasn't dead from smoke inhalation or from burns or anything like that. They were dead from gunshot wounds, meaning they had likely died prior to this fire even starting. and even more disturbing, their bodies were found in all different bedrooms of the house. So think about that for a moment. They're walking into this. They see that these deceased people, who they didn't know at the time were family members, but that these deceased people had died from gunshot wounds, not even the fire itself. And it wasn't as though all of them had gathered together. They were trying to escape the house fire. They were trying to escape a burglar or something like that. All of these family members were in different rooms throughout the house, which to me immediately indicated, oh, there was an element of surprise here. They weren't expecting what happened to them to have happened. They were caught off guard, which is why they were all in separate rooms. And let's go through the victims. First, there was 39-year-old Amanda, who went by Mandy, 47-year-old Christopher, who went by Chris, their 15-year-old son, Keegan. 12-year-old Bennett, their 11-year-old twin daughters, Caroline and Ella, who, by the way, had been adopted by this family from China, 11-year-old Smith, and 5-year-old Theodore, who went by Teddy. So you have a 5-year-old, three 11-year-olds, a 12-year-old, a 15-year-old, and then two parents, 39 years old and 47 years old. Speaker 7 (10:10) Units made inside, made entry inside to battle the fire. because there was smoke showing from the residence. When they got inside, they noticed that there was several numerous people deceased inside the home. They then notified the sheriff's office and we began an investigation into that. So what I can tell you at this point is that eight people are dead inside the home. There's two adults and six children. Speaker 2 (10:33) All eight bodies were immediately sent to the medical examiner's office because they knew they needed to investigate. They needed to perform these autopsies and figure out what the hell happened here. And sure enough, the Ottawa County Sheriff's investigators called in the Michigan State Police to assist with this investigation. They weren't sure what they were dealing with. Could this have been a stranger? Could this have been a robbery gone wrong and then they tried to set the house on fire to dispose of evidence? What really happened here? Speaker 2 (13:13) So that afternoon, a search warrant was obtained, and the investigators started collecting evidence to try to figure out not only what happened, but also to build a timeline. Then the following day, on Saturday, July 25th, a neighbor who lived in the house behind this family called 911. Now in this 911 call, the caller told the dispatchers that she had heard gunshots the night before. She said that she heard these gunshots sometime between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. However, she wasn't sure if she should worry because she wasn't sure if maybe she was mistaking these gunshots for fireworks, firecrackers, different noises like that. And again, I think that this is also something pretty common. And just speaking for myself, I live in Orange County. I don't really live close to Disneyland, but I live close enough that I can hear the fireworks at night. I can't see them, but I can hear them. And even around the beaches on the 4th of July, I can't tell you how many times I've heard what I believe is our fireworks. But then I question myself being like, well, could those have been gunshots? I don't want to overreact. But like there is a correlation between the sounds. And we've also heard this in past cases as well that. They didn't report anything because they thought it was just a firecracker or a firework going off because they do sound, unfortunately, very similar. And it's hard to know that distinction unless you're a trained officer or you're highly trained around firearms. So she said that she heard what she now thinks were gunshots between 8 and 9 p.m. And she said that the reason that she now actually was prompted to call 911 and report this is because she heard that this entire family was dead. Before, she was trying to chalk it up to fireworks, but now hearing that her whole entire neighborhood family was deceased, she knew that she needed to call and give the details of what happened to the police. Speaker 3 (15:07) Ottawa Central Dispatch. Speaker 4 (15:11) Regarding the eight people that were killed in Grand Haven Township, Speaker 5 (15:15) last Speaker 4 (15:15) night we were watching TV. We live off of 152nd on a private drive, so they're behind us. And when we were watching TV last night, I can't say for sure, but I thought I heard two gunshots. And I was going to say something to my husband, but they weren't like outside. They were in the distance. So did I hear a firecracker or did I hear a fireworks or did I hear a gunshot? And now with this, I'm kind of assuming I heard a gunshot. Speaker 6 (15:52) Okay. It was Speaker 4 (15:53) probably between 8 and 9 o'clock last night. Speaker 4 (15:58) I know it was after 8 and maybe between 8 and 8.30. I'm sorry. That's upsetting me. Yeah, Speaker 6 (16:06) I get it. Speaker 4 (16:07) 8 and 9.30. Okay. So
