Rope Drop Radio: A Disney Travel Podcast

Doug and Lauren Shields break down Magic Kingdom attraction strategies in a 'Book, Drop, or Stop' format, evaluating whether each ride warrants a Lightning Lane

Key takeaways

I am Doug McKnight here with Lauren Shields. And Lauren, it's been rainy in the Midwest and I'm tired of it. Speaker 1 (1:19) Yeah. We've been not able to mow our lawn forever and it's not looking good. And did you see like, that's a total Midwest thing. If your neighbor's like mowing their lawn and then you're like, oh man, now I only have like a day or two before I have to do it. Speaker 2 (1:32) Yeah. I don't succumb to peer pressure very easily. So I do not care. I also live on a dead end and I'm next to a field on next to me and behind me. Nobody cares Speaker 1 (1:42) if your grass gets really long. I Speaker 2 (1:44) think they do. I think they talk about me like a McKnight guy. Speaker 1 (1:48) I'm pretty Speaker 2 (1:48) sure. Yeah. I'm not going to win any lawn care awards, but it is what it is. Right. Speaker 1 (1:57) Yep. Speaker 2 (1:58) Yeah, it is. So, you know what? I wish there was a lightning lane to skip mowing my lawn. Speaker 1 (2:03) Yes. Yes. Speaker 2 (2:05) So this would be the equivalent of the robot mower, which I plan on buying one in the next year. Speaker 1 (2:11) Yeah. So Speaker 2 (2:12) if anybody has suggestions about their robot lawn mowers. Speaker 1 (2:16) I want to hear about this. Send them to Speaker 2 (2:17) me. Speaker 1 (2:18) We have a couple in our neighborhood. I don't think these people listen to this podcast. That got like some really cheapo ones and they're not doing a great job. But I know there's better quality ones out there and I bet they do a good job. So please tell us about your robo lawn care. Speaker 2 (2:33) Yeah. Tell me about your, you know. Speaker 1 (2:35) Yeah, Speaker 2 (2:36) that's all I want. I don't want to have to mow. I'll get out there and weed eat once a week or so. Whatever. But if I don't have to mow, my gosh, then I'd have time to run for the springtime surprise. Lauren, we're going to Florida in April to do the springtime surprise, April 8th through the 11th. For some reason, I am running a 10K and a 10 miler. Speaker 1 (2:57) All the tents. Speaker 2 (2:59) All the tens. It's ten too many. All Speaker 1 (3:02) the tens will be Speaker 2 (3:02) good. Speaker 1 (3:02) Is it? Yes. No. You can never have ten too many. It'll be super fun. Yes. Come join us. We're going to be doing meetups. It'll be so much fun. You can also book with Touring and Cruises and get a $25 Disney gift card if you do a minimum of a three-night stay with three-day tickets. We will figure out where the meetups are closer to. Doug, are you working on a t-shirt? Please tell me. Yeah. People have spoken. We're Speaker 2 (3:26) going to get a running club or running shirt. Speaker 1 (3:30) Yes. Speaker 2 (3:31) And our merch store does have like dry fit shirts with a small Rope Drop Radio logo. If you're watching on YouTube, this isn't one of them. This is different, but that size. So it'd be great for getting out there and exercising. Yeah. Speaker 1 (3:47) Yes, it would be. Hopefully we'll see some Patreons there. We do have a new Patreon this week. So thank you to Laura Jones for joining the Patreon community. Come check us out at patreon.com. We do a bonus weekly after show. We'll do one tonight. That's where we talk more unfiltered and post that on Friday. Doug does the news, which is, I think everyone's favorite is Speaker 2 (4:08) the news. Yeah. If I post it correctly, which. I've been struggling. I Speaker 1 (4:12) got there Speaker 2 (4:12) eventually. I screwed up all three things one week with Patreon. So I apologize. I had the wrong. Speaker 1 (4:20) It's Speaker 2 (4:20) all good. It's fixed. What Speaker 1 (4:21) was it? Speaker 2 (4:21) The wrong news file. I posted the after show at the wrong time. And the. The ad-free version of the show was a corrupt file, and somehow I missed that. Yeah, so it didn't get up until the next morning. It was posted Friday morning when someone told me it wasn't working. I fixed it, the ad-free version. I was 0 for 3 last week. Speaker 1 (4:45) You're making us like super professional on Patreon. I tried. Hey, Speaker 2 (4:48) the news went up Sunday without a hitch. And you know what? There's fall food now. Speaker 1 (4:54) And Speaker 2 (4:54) all it means is they put on different sprinkles. Just FYI. Speaker 1 (5:00) That actually enticed me. I saw the fall sprinkles on the ice cream sandwich and I wanted to have it again. Speaker 2 (5:07) It reminded me of, I didn't go into details on the fall food because I was going to be really negative. It reminded me of when I really dived into the 4th of July food they were going to roll out for the 250th. And as Speaker 1 (5:22) I was Speaker 2 (5:22) going through it on the news, like every item was just and sprinkles and sprinkles. Speaker 2 (5:29) And spring like, oh, my gosh, Disney. That's Speaker 1 (5:34) how they change things up with different colored sprinkles. And that's fine. God Speaker 2 (5:37) bless them. All right. Another great way to support the show other than sprinkles is to leave a five star review on Apple podcast. Leave a five star review. We will read it on air and love you forever. Just like this one. We will love Rick Neese forever because of a five star review titled five stars by Rick Neese. Here we go. Get prepared to read this. No notes. On with the show. Speaker 1 (6:05) Rick, that was fantastic. Short, succinct to the point. I like it. I love Speaker 2 (6:10) all the reviews, long or short. I love them all. So bravo. We Speaker 1 (6:15) like all the five star ones. Speaker 2 (6:16) Right. So if you don't know what to leave, there you go. Just no notes on what the show. And so let's get on to the show here. We have a stuffy of the week over your right shoulder. Lauren, please bring that closer to the camera. I know who it is. You know who it is. But do the listeners know who it is? Go over to YouTube. Check out our YouTube channel. Subscribe while you're over there. Like the episode. Just do a little favor for us. And oh, yeah, that's that's a good one. Some people will get this right away. Some people are going to struggle. Some are going to have to use Google to get this one. Speaker 1 (6:46) Or our social media. There's your clue. Speaker 2 (6:48) Yeah. Go check out our trip before. We have referenced this character Speaker 1 (6:50) in the last month. Speaker 2 (6:52) Yeah, so this is a good one to go check out, see who it is. Someone may have been similar to this character. Just saying. All right. It is time to get on to the show where we're going to talk about lightning lanes, whether we want to book them, drop them or stop them after Speaker 1 (7:09) this Speaker 2 (7:09) break. Speaker 2 (7:13) Hey Nebraska Rope Droppers, getting to the Magic just got easier. The Lincoln Airport now offers non-stop flights to Orlando twice a week on Breeze Airways. Every Wednesday and Saturday, skip the layovers and get straight to Mickey faster than ever. I've flown Breeze myself. It's a great experience with one of the youngest fleets in the sky flying only Airbus A220s. So next time you're planning a Disney vacation, start at Lincoln Airport, your shortcut to the Magic. Speaker 2 (7:44) And welcome back. It is game time here on Rope Drop Radio. We're going to talk some lightning lanes, but we're going to talk about each attraction at the Magic Kingdom, whether we should book, drop, or just stop. Just stop with our lightning lanes. Lauren, do you want to explain this a little further? Speaker 1 (8:01) Yeah, we were trying to think of a fun game to do with Lightning Lanes because we get asked so many questions about that. We've done the episode earlier in January, like this year, talking about kind of what your strategies are for the year of 2026. We'll do a new one next January, so don't worry. But this is another fun way to kind of figure out what you should be booking, what you should maybe skip, what's a better rope drop. So that is the title of the show. Should you book this? Should you just rope drop it? Or should you stop and do neither? Speaker 2 (8:28) Right. And so... Basically, when we're booking multi-pass, you get to book three in advance, but there's tiers. So there's tiers come in play. We're not going to worry about like we're not planning a day. We're just saying whether this singular attraction is worth the lightning lane. Correct? Speaker 1 (8:46) Yeah. So Speaker 2 (8:48) like we're going to say get a lightning lane for multiple tier ones. Speaker 2 (8:54) We know you can't do that with your first three, but guess what you use one right away in the morning guess what's available Another tier one. Yeah, we got lots of tier ones on our day at the Magic Kingdom. If Speaker 1 (9:06) it's not busy, it's pretty easy to do, especially at Magic Kingdom because there's so many rides. You Speaker 2 (9:09) know what really bothers me when I hear people talk about how like, oh, we went when it wasn't busy, so we didn't need multi-pass. We didn't need lightning lanes. Actually, at the Magic Kingdom, when it's not busy, you can crush it with lightning lanes. I don't Speaker 1 (9:26) think we ever waited a long time for any ride on our trip. Speaker 2 (9:29) Because they'll artificially inflate a few attractions like early and late in the day, like Space Mountain, they won't run both sides in September when it's not busy. So guess who that impacts? Standby. Because they're still selling the same number of lightning lanes. They're not pulling back on making dollars. So you avoid some of that artificial waits. Like we saw that at Soarin' where they weren't running all three seaters. Speaker 1 (9:54) Guess Speaker 2 (9:54) what? Lightning Lane's still zipping on by. Yeah. All right. Lauren, do you want to kick it off? Do you want me to kick off? How do you want to play this? Speaker 1 (10:06) I'll kick it off. Speaker 2 (10:07) Okay. Speaker 1 (10:07) So first one is Seven Doors Mine Train. This is an individual Lightning Lane. Are you typically, you know what, should we like go from our own perspective? Because you are not a thrill seeker because your stomach can't handle it. And I am. Speaker 2 (10:23) I think we approach it from the general consensus of. Speaker 1 (10:27) Oh, that's boring. Speaker 2 (10:28) Okay. Your own personal one. We'll do both. Speaker 1 (10:31) Not personal, but I think you do better representing the younger families who maybe have a height requirement or their kids aren't ready for it. And I'm probably more of the older kids. Speaker 2 (10:40) Did you just call me short, Lauren? Speaker 1 (10:42) Yep. Speaker 2 (10:42) Okay. Yeah. It's funny. I represent the younger families better because I have two college students. Speaker 1 (10:49) Well, you don't go on thrill rides. Speaker 2 (10:52) I am not very thrilling. All right. So seven dwarf mine train, what are you doing, Lauren? Are you booking it, dropping it, or stopping it? I booked this one. What do those mean exactly? I just wanted them to Speaker 1 (11:04) rhyme. Speaker 2 (11:04) To Speaker 1 (11:04) book it, obviously, Speaker 2 (11:04) make the lightning lane. To drop it means don't make a lightning lane. No, rope drop it. Rope drop it. Good point. Yeah, much better. Yeah, Speaker 1 (11:13) rope drop it. So I wouldn't use a
