Speaker 2 (0:37) Hello, Speaker 1 (0:37) everyone, and welcome to RHAP's coverage of Survivor 51 for Survivor Global. I'm your host, Shannon Guss, back in the podcast seat with some delay, I guess, in remembering how to podcast. It has been a while since I have hosted a recap. It's been a very long time since we have handed out chili points. I'm very excited to do that today, to talk about the first two very fun episodes of Survivor 51 with my great friend, Nick Idanza. Nick, thank you for being here. Speaker 2 (1:02) Shannon, it feels so good to be here and kind of welcome you back to Recap Land. And as another parent in the trenches, I haven't been out of the trenches for a decade. So I'm welcoming you to the trenches and welcoming you to back to recapping. So I'm glad we got to do it together. Speaker 1 (1:19) Yeah, well, look, it's been a big few months of not really podcasting for, yeah, I did the draft, but not recapping for. a long time. I feel like a completely different person. And I was like, recapping will be hard, obviously with, you know, a child now and everything. And then I was like, when I watched it, I was like, damn, this is fun. And I do want to talk about it. So I'm hoping to, what my plan is, is to do every second week. Speaker 2 (1:45) Great. Speaker 1 (1:46) And we can still give out chizzy points, you know, do the double every week. So we can still chart that. And it was so convenient that we had two tribes went to tribal council, both of them. I was like, How great is that for the podcast? I'm very, very excited to talk about it. But Nick, how are you doing? How's life? And how are you enjoying 5.51? Speaker 2 (2:04) Life's great. Nothing's changed over here. Just living life with my three kids and work's great. Family's great. Just, yeah, everything. I'm very happy. Life is very fulfilling at the moment. And so much so that like when you said, do you want to recap 5.51? I was like, I don't know if I need that aggravation in my life. Like, I don't know if I need Jeff yelling at me. I'll touch you. Yes. No, this is the part that gets me to do it. However, I will say. I was pleasantly surprised. I had incredibly low expectations, incredibly low. Like I can't even tell you, like I was like really like, you know, only thought of doing it was so that we could chat. And the first episode was like possibly fine, like totally fine. If it had been a one week. If I had just done the premiere with you, I just don't think I would have watched the second episode. But the second episode was fantastic. I was like so into it. I had it on my laptop while I was doing my ironing and my daughter was kind of like watching and she was getting into it. She doesn't even really know much about Survivor. Like it was super, super fun. So like I fear they may have got me. I fear they may have hooked me. Speaker 1 (3:16) Yeah, I feel that. I mean, look, I was watching it all through the day, like watching while Rory was sleeping and then a bit she was watching. And then I actually ended up watching the tribal council on my phone when my mom took Rory and I got my nails done. And I was like, this is living. Like, I don't know if it was the environment that I was in or the tribal council was really fun, but I was like, this is true relaxation. And I think it's been a really fun first couple of episodes. I think that the production decisions have been very, very good. You know what we used to call the open era, I think, like back in the day? Just Survivor. It's just Speaker 2 (3:50) Survivor. Speaker 1 (3:51) It's just idols. It's just not beware. It's just not all the things they were doing. And like, it's like, you know, new flavored Coke, new flavored Slurm. I think that's what they used to say on Futurama. Like, Speaker 2 (4:00) we're Speaker 1 (4:01) just going back to what we wanted. And if they have to relabel it to make themselves feel better that we just wanted to go back, then like, you do you. But there was so much good stuff here. When they gave them their supplies. After the first tribe loss, I'm going to have to remember the tribe names. I was out of my seat cheering, no more disaster tribe. I have the stats. I've got the stats. Both tribes have gone to tribal council. We have seen 20 of 21 players vote. So barring Lewis, we've seen everyone go to tribe. Well, not vote because there were some shots and die, but they've all been to tribal council. In the new era, the average episode in which we've seen everyone vote, that's by Lewis, is episode 5.1. those 10 seasons it's because often it's to the merge Speaker 2 (4:43) that's Speaker 1 (4:45) crazy i went through the 10 seasons and then obviously just divided it by 10 and there's like i mean there's three tribes so like it's like minimum episode three yeah and then often six or seven it got it to about 5.1 so that is wonderful that we've seen both because you want to see these people play like i think what the issue is with the new era is like people don't play aubrey played with 24 people she went to she participated in nine votes. The same as poverty in AUV World in a 16-day season. Like, they might be out there, but I want to see them play. That's how you get to know these players. So that's awesome that we've seen that. And another stat that I have that I think is important is, you know, there's like a tendency to have these unanimous votes in the new era because the tribes are small and it's limited or maybe, you know, people just lose their votes. So they're not actively voting for someone still in the game. But we see that when they do, that's so fun. You think about like, Mary and Say and Carl and Sue, like we keep that conflict in the game. You voted for someone and you both come back to camp. In the whole new era, in the first two tribal councils of 41 to 50, so 20 tribal councils, that happened five times. Oh my God. We have in the game right now who have voted for someone still in the game. Two in the council and three in the second. In the first two tribal councils of this season, we've got as much as the entire stretch of 41 of these first two tribal councils. Is it the cast? Is it, I think, largely on the format? Whatever it is, it will keep conflict in the game. It's dynamic. It's big. It's open. ah i feel like i'm free like i feel i feel for sure Speaker 2 (6:15) for sure but the hater in me you know i love survivor i wouldn't be i wouldn't have done this many of these with you and like you know been the poster boy of the first season australian so i like this survivor is my life very integrated in my life right so i'm not a hater on that level but like yeah u.s survivor made me into a bit of a hater and like why are we congratulating them for just going back Speaker 1 (6:40) Yeah. To the Speaker 2 (6:41) bare minimum. Speaker 1 (6:43) Like Speaker 2 (6:44) this is what we've always done, right? And we're like, wow, Speaker 1 (6:49) like what Speaker 2 (6:49) a great swing. Two tribes. What Speaker 1 (6:51) a Speaker 2 (6:51) great swing. Like they really kind of shot for the fences and didn't interrupt the game. You know, like they really swung for the fences and gave us two tribes. Like this is just literally what Survivor is supposed to be. And I'm not one of those purists that's like, Borneo is the best season ever. Like I'm not one of those people, right? But, like, my God, like, they tampered with it beyond the point of recognition. And, yes, they've walked a lot of that back. It's been two episodes. Let's not get too crazy. Next season they could just bring it all straight back. But, like, are we really going to be, like, pat on the back for the best show ever? Like, you've got to – I feel like they have ruined the trust with a lot of the audience and they need to get it back. And I am willing to give them that chance. Not that they owe me anything, but, like – I feel like I owe it to the show to look beyond that decade blip or whatever it was, that 10-season blip, and stick with it because this was pretty fun and it just reminded me of just some of that great old-school moment. But, like, the quote that annoys me is, like, at one point Jeff is like, this is old-school right here. And it was, like, literally just nothing. And it's like he seems both. painfully aware of his own deficiencies and powerless to stop himself from not, from not widening the gulf between what the show was and what the show currently is. And that tension is the bit that I just don't know if I'll be able to overcome that. Speaker 1 (8:26) Well, I want to talk about that. Firstly, I, I think it's like when they do something for so long, there's just relief that there's change. I'm very willing to be like, good job show. Like. please don't screw this up more. I'm willing to be optimistic with them and congratulate them. If that's what it will take, like I will do it. But let's talk about that because that is actually the biggest takeaway that I had from the first episode, which was it was a fun premiere, but just to take time out of his incredibly busy day and his very fun premiere to lecture me specifically. I was like, why is he looking? It's like he was breaking the fourth wall and he was like, these fans. I was like, me? Why are you talking to me? Yeah, he was like. They're on Twitter. I'm like tweeting. I'm like, what? What were you saying about? Like first, this is my, this is my evolution of the moment where Jeff yelled at me and all of us possibly, but it really felt personal. We're like, at first I was so annoyed by it that I couldn't even watch the challenge after. I was like, did he just lecture me? I'll show him who lectures who? Like I was so irritated. But then as I watched it again, yeah, I was like, I know it just made me angry. I wish it did. But. Then I watched it again and I was dying laughing at several points. Like the fact that he's like, we'll talk about every decision, but he's like, who wants fire in this like heavy handed vote? Speaker 2 (9:41) And Speaker 1 (9:41) Kilby just puts his head straight in the air. And everyone else is very like, and Kilby, and he leaves it up there. And like everyone around him is like, no. And he's like, let's mix it up, baby. It made me love Kilby so much. Yes, agreed. In the face of like all deterrence, he was like, woo. no fire and jeff was like i kill you and he still went with it and then later in like clearly rhetorical like angry questions jeff was like and who wants no twists and kristin is like and then she realizes it's a rhetorical question but they they earned a fan in me for life both of them like i love that so much so i thought that was hilarious and then the next day i woke up and i thought wow how many hosts of a tv show are talking to me and getting angry at me In the middle of their premiere. Like, how would I explain this to a regular person? How many other shows is this happening in where there is a dialogue where we angrily go on social media? Then Jeff comes back at us like, no, screw you. And then we're like, well, screw you. When will he come back at me again on the show? What an insane dialogue we have with the host of this television show. Genuinely, if you think about it, kind of iconic. It's not a Speaker 2 (10:47) dialogue, though. That's the thing. It's not. It's like this kind of like, it's. It's like someone telling you like all these deficiencies in your character and then you digging your heels in for like a decade, like longer, multiple decades, like just like, just, and at no point and just being, and instead thinking that you're addressing them by saying people criticize me all the time. That's it. It's not like. People criticize me all the time. And then therefore we kind of like blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. It's like people criticize me all the time. Just because you acknowledge the criticism doesn't mean that you're like some evolved human who's kind of like working through, I don't know. Speaker 1 (11:32) I don't know. I just feel like. Speaker 2 (11:36) It's... it there's also something kind of like petty about him mentioning it so often it's like you didn't see like the the showrunner of like lost before like the final season like there wasn't like there Speaker 1 (11:51) wasn't like a disclaimer that Speaker 2 (11:52) was like we've heard all your criticisms about where this show is heading and we're gonna do them anyway no they just kind of shut up and stayed in their way Speaker 1 (11:59) yeah exactly that's what i'm saying is that's why it's iconic because when does it happen that they take imagine if in the middle of the episode they're like hey you shut up what Speaker 2 (12:08) are we Speaker 1 (12:10) doing Speaker 2 (12:11) i'm damon lindelof and i'm here to tell you whatever your name is my headband's name was i'm here to tell you to shut the fuck up like that's your program yeah Speaker 1 (12:19) exactly your unchanged program yeah we we want to tell you we hear you and we hate you and the fact is like we're never going anywhere that's why it's so funny it's like i'll stay here and like obviously the ironically the fire in me only burns larger in anger when it's like why is he antagonizing me and back and forth will go but the issue is he's never actually heard my complaints he cannot tell me my own arguments i'll be like jeff why do i hate fire he'd be like you're a purist who hates all twists and advantages i'd Speaker 2 (12:48) be Speaker 1 (12:48) like no i don't that's crazy even the scope of twists and advantages is absurdly broad please listen to what i'm saying so Speaker 2 (12:55) there's Speaker 1 (12:56) so many things even can i just and also this is another pet peeve it's fun to get back into this um so Speaker 2 (13:01) many Speaker 1 (13:02) people and jeff says like I would want it fire as a player because I'd want a shot. Just like that makes no sense. No sense. It's not giving every player a shot because even that would just bring us back to parity. Like at best you can say, okay, good for the fire makers. But even then what it is actually is situational and maybe, maybe like archetype. If you're the kind of player who's going to be out in front and require fire versus someone who might be in the shadows and want. not want their opponents, like, bigger threats to have the chance of fire. But it's so hard to know that this early. Like, it's completely situational. Like, obviously, for, like, Devin, like, in 35 versus Ben, fire was bad. Even for people who aren't in the fire making challenge, but the fire winner comes and beats them at the end, say, like, what Kenzie did, it's obviously bad. Like, just the narrative of, like, it gives everyone a shot. Like, if you're going to stop the episode to yell at me, Jeff, just think about it. for five seconds. You know what I mean? But also just like, just address the actual complaint. Speaker 2 (14:03) It's so flawed to ask that we make the show for you. It's like, you actually don't make the show for them. Like, because if that's true, the show wouldn't exist. Like you make the show to like make money and to be like prime time. Like, you know, they always say we make the show for the fans. It's like, well, do you make the show for the fans or do you make the show for the players? Because like, you can't have both. If you're saying it's in this instance, we're making it for these people. It's like it's both, right? But mostly it's for the people who are going to put the eyeballs on the screen and keep the show in the zeitgeist for 20-something years, right? So it's so ludicrous to take the – we're going to put all these parameters and say that you guys, you 21 or whatever it was, people are going to decide and it has to be unanimous and you need to say it in front of everyone. Stake your claim right now. in a game that's about kind of like cloak and dagger. And on top of that, it's like asking someone on death row. should we have last minute stays of execution? Yeah. No fucking shit. They're going to say yes. Sorry for swearing. Right. Of course they're going to say yes. They might be executed soon. Like, of course they are going to say yes. It takes a very brave person like Kilby to put Speaker 1 (15:23) their Speaker 2 (15:25) hand up and say no. Or those other four, I don't know who the other four people were, but also, you know, Speaker 1 (15:29) I think it's important to say Pat did, which was hard to see on the show, but Pat did. And then it was Eric, Rob, Sharonda and Kristen. Speaker 2 (15:36) Okay. Yeah, cool. Yeah. Speaker 1 (15:38) Yeah. Speaker 2 (15:39) But it's just like, of course they're going to say yes. Like, I feel like I hate Final Four fire making, but like, even there's like a part of me, like if I was out there, I'd be like, you know, I've made it this far. Like maybe I back myself in fire. Like I'm not in that moment. I'm not thinking about what makes a good season, what makes a good television show. What's the legacy of the show. I'm just like, how do I get closer? And I think that maybe fire could get me because I have confidence in my fire abilities. So therefore it's not a pure vote. It's like so, it's so like, what's the word? There's so many caveats to people who vote. Yeah. It's so manipulative. Annoying. Annoying. And then he gets to go away Speaker 1 (16:14) and say, well, we put it to Speaker 2 (16:16) them. Speaker 1 (16:17) Like Speaker 2 (16:17) you didn't, you did not. You put it to like an incredibly small subset of people in a highly specific situation with plenty of caveats and repercussions if they said no. Speaker 1 (16:26) I did think it was funny because it's like. All the fans come to me, but I'm not making this show for the fans. I'm making it for the 20 of you. Hope you have a nice vacation. Like it shouldn't be about the fans or the players. Both the fan vote and the player vote were absurd in the language of the fan vote last season. In the, as you said, unanimous, the fact that Jeff is like. He doesn't understand the power dynamic. Like, of course you are the AP and asking them this in front of them. Like, I would want fire making, but what about you? And it has to be, as you said, unanimous and you trying to go along to get along, which is kind of why Kilby was incredible because he did not care. He was like, no, fire. I want fire gone first, which was incredible. But the thing is, it shouldn't matter about the fans or the players. It should be the game designers wanting to make the best game. And if you want it to be the best game and you think it's better, articulate my argument of why it's worse to me and then defend it against that. Because then he's like, he's conflating me with just a pure purist, which I'm not. I like the fun stuff. I like late 20s, early 30s US survivor. Like I like twists when they're done well. But I want him to tell me, okay, why do I hate it? I think it's unbalanced. You know, I think that any way the threats go early, it makes this like homogenous endgame. Like these are the things, if he were to address that and then argue against it, that would be a whole different ballgame. But anyway, I look forward to the next time that Jeff and I go back and forth on this. What a fun dynamic. the host of the show and we have together like completely iconic but also completely absurd i also wanted to say brady then it's like i don't um you can't win the show if you don't make fire it's like well that's actually misunderstanding this misunderstanding the show on at least two different levels because you literally have Speaker 2 (18:01) people who don't understand the basic rules of the game as we ever yeah and we'll Speaker 1 (18:06) talk a lot about brady but like yeah it's like but also only two of you make fire and also you should be able to not make fire and anyway that was that Another thing that, okay, then I'm going to say we would get to the good stuff again, but can we just mention as well, the coin. The coin is coming back. Speaker 2 (18:21) And Speaker 1 (18:22) possibly the coin led to Devin's getting cast on a Big Brother season. He's now one, which is crazy. So I don't think we're ever losing it. I really hate the coin. Like, I really, I don't even understand. It's like, this is the open era where anything goes, except we do a seasonal coin toss for some reason. Like, that's the show. Why? I think I was so aghast last season. People were so high on it. And now that it's come back and there's, I feel like people are still pretty high on the coin. I'm like, this is like cause for alarm that. Yeah. Speaker 2 (18:56) I don't mind the coin. If we figure out the mechanics of how someone becomes the coin flipper. Right. That is Speaker 1 (19:02) a big concern. I will agree with you. Speaker 2 (19:04) If they want to double the money and they want to do all that and people want to volunteer and put themselves into a situation. where they have to do or die and flip a coin, then people do do or die decisions every day in the game. That is their decision and their prerogative. But if no one wants to flip the coin. the coin should not be flipped yeah Speaker 1 (19:25) but i do think i think it's gonna be it's Speaker 2 (19:28) gonna be where it's like you're voting for the person to flip the coin don't you reckon Speaker 1 (19:34) Well, I mean, that is my concern that someone gets rocked into the coin and like, what are we even doing at that point? I do think that is the biggest concern. I think there are other concerns. Speaker 2 (19:44) Maybe they'll do it on a non-tie. No, if no Speaker 1 (19:46) one volunteers, it's rocks. Speaker 2 (19:48) Oh, okay. Yeah. Oh, wow. Yeah. Speaker 1 (19:50) So that was my concern that it would have been surreal last time. Speaker 2 (19:55) Perpetual uncertainty or whatever the word is. Not Speaker 1 (19:57) perpetual. What are you, Lewis? Even I. Permanent uncertainty. Permanent. I love that. I love that scene with Lewis. He was like, what did I say on the boat? Lewis was like, I think uncertainty. He was like, permanent uncertainty. Speaker 2 (20:08) Like Lewis didn't remember. He had to yell at someone in 24 hours. He just needed to yell. I do Speaker 1 (20:13) think, I think there are bigger issues with the coin. Firstly, I think if the coin doesn't land and someone just goes home and the vote is cancelled, that won't be fun television. Like we've seen the non-alums of Survivor. Like we have to have a vote. Also, the players should be careful possibly on always. strategizing around something where a vote might be canceled, which is concerning. It was one of the best votes of last season. We want to see that play out. I think it's bad TV. I think it's bad game design. And I also think, why are we the show with the seasonal coin toss? What do we do? Like, I think it's silly. I don't care about the money being doubled. Like that does like, I've covered every season of the show, like every franchise with different monies and like, like money prizes. And it doesn't really matter to me. I agree Speaker 2 (20:54) with that so much. I agree with that so much. It's not like that. Now we're truly making the game for the 24 people who are in the show because it has no bearing on anyone else. You might say, oh, they kind of like fight harder if it's $2 million versus $1 million. $1 million is a freaking lot of money. Exactly. It's already life-changing. We've seen people make really, really like crazy decisions for game shows that have $100,000. You know, like, you know, like it's not a big deal. Like I would rather them use that. Like we'll flip the coin and use a million dollars to bring back the live reunion. To Speaker 1 (21:31) take away fire. Speaker 2 (21:36) We'll use that million dollars to change country locations every year with a unique theme and a artistic palette that creates visual interest on the buffs, in the challenges and at camp. How about that? I'll be like, yes, I'll flip the coin. Like, yes, send me to China. Gilby would be Speaker 1 (21:55) like, let's mix it up, baby. Speaker 2 (21:58) Gabon, woohoo. You know, like that's what we want the money invested in. I do not care if someone wins $2 million versus $1 million. Okay, was it funny to see Dave win $50 billion or whatever he won? Yeah, Speaker 1 (22:11) that Speaker 2 (22:11) was $50 Speaker 1 (22:11) billion. Speaker 2 (22:12) You know, that's kind of funny and unique because of how high it was. When Squid Game and that and Dave and all that, they're all giving away all that money. Your $2 million is – and Tony's already won $2 million. Like, you know, like it's not enough. It's not enough. What they want is they want – and this is proof that they're not making it for those 24 people. They're making it for the average Joe viewer to keep watching it across seasons to keep the ratings going up that the ratings don't – decline every season because they want there to be some sort of story arc across the next four or five years. That's all it is. And that is proof that they are not making it for the players. They're making it for the show and the viewers and Speaker 1 (22:52) the sponsorship and CBS Speaker 2 (22:53) and Paramount and Skydance and all that. Speaker 1 (22:55) Yeah. I mean, again, that doesn't hit for me. I'm happy that Aubrey won $2 million. Like good job for her. But like for me, yeah, it's not worth it to be doing any of this in place of a vote. Like I honestly feel, and this is true of Fire as well, like every time we do something instead of voting, in any of these franchises, like an angel loses its wings. And that is basically my like constant thought in some of the twists they've done in Australian Survivor as well. So it's just. To be honest, Speaker 2 (23:21) that's not the thing that bothers me. Like I've said this to you before on the podcast, and I know this kind of like many, you know, deep cut Survivor fans go, I would have thought that Nick as a real Survivor fan would hate, but it doesn't bother me when the vote doesn't happen. What I hate is when people are forced into a situation that they don't have a choice in. That is the thing that really bothers me because you should always have a choice in the game because the choices and the do I, don't I is the bit where the true juice comes from the show. Speaker 1 (23:57) I do agree with you that, yeah, decision making is so important. And there was a lot of it in this in this. These two episodes. Let's talk about it. Should Speaker 2 (24:04) we Speaker 1 (24:04) stop? The hater portion of the podcast is over. Jeff, I'll see you next season in our ongoing weird dialogue that we have. I have Speaker 2 (24:11) a Speaker 1 (24:11) feeling Speaker 2 (24:11) that it'll happen again before the end of the season, but that's okay. See him then. Speaker 1 (24:16) What a wonderful, and I hope it goes on for a long time. I'm going to put the cast here for the video version if anyone wants to watch that. We've got, apparently the purple tribe is Sabu. Did you know that? And the Toka tribe is the yellow tribe. So we've got. This is from Survivor Fact Checker, by the way, and I want to talk about these two tribal councils. Speaker 2 (24:34) Great. Let's do it. Speaker 1 (24:36) Okay. A lot of fun stuff. Yeah. Should we start an episode? Should we start an episode two with the bigger tribal council? Is that backwards back to Toka? I think Speaker 2 (24:45) maybe sequentially makes a little bit more sense, but Speaker 1 (24:47) I've been out of, I've been out of the game for so long. You're so right. I agree with you. Let's talk about Toka, who had an interesting tribal council. Who's well, firstly, who stands out to you in this tribe? Speaker 2 (24:59) Okay. The people that I like, I like Pat. I like Kilby. Speaker 2 (25:03) and that's it. They're like, well, I'm sure there's other people that I like. The hand portion is not over. Those are the two. No, no, no. Those are the two that I'm like, if I had to kind of like root for, those are the two that I'm rooting for. But I like a lot of other people as well. There's no one that I dislike. That's the thing. Those are the two that I'm like most honed in on. I think Pat is, the pantsless Pat thing was really funny. Really funny and just like I. Speaker 2 (25:32) I feel like I know that feeling. I didn't lose my pants on Survivor, but I know that feeling of like something you're afraid of. Speaker 1 (25:39) Metaphorically losing your pants. Speaker 2 (25:41) Like at one point, no, no, like actually physically at one point I thought I lost my socks and my shoes. And I just remember thinking, it's not a big deal, Speaker 1 (25:50) Nick. It's not a big Speaker 2 (25:51) deal. We Speaker 1 (25:51) will Speaker 2 (25:52) figure this out. But inside I'm like, ah! And you can see that she was like trying to like. Guys, it's okay. And like be the fun, easy, breezy person who lost their pants. Anyway, so the shoot was great. I loved Kilby because of all the reasons we said. But I think everyone's really fun. Was Jenna giving you like, does she look like Nat 10 for you? Speaker 1 (26:12) No. Speaker 2 (26:12) Oh, okay. She was giving me real luck. Speaker 1 (26:15) I think people have said like Kim Spradlin, like Kim came in divorce with like a bridal shop. Right. And that was like the ironic, cause she has like a rom-com level job, like that whole storyline. So she's like a recently divorced wedding photographer. Yeah. Like that is 27 dresses. I'm like, you know what I mean? Like that sounds like a great noughties rom-com. I, I mean, I love Jenna as well. I love the Speaker 2 (26:37) little run where she was explaining all the stuff about the cameras. I thought that was
