Speaker 2 (0:13) Welcome back. Speaker 4 (0:45) My name's Will Barrett Dudley. How are you, you old rascal? School is in session. School is in session. Must be nice, Speaker 7 (0:57) dude. I mean, I'm just commenting. I think the kids went back to school this week. If you're part of the broader Texas school system, public, private, or otherwise. Speaker 7 (1:10) The thing about it is, though, daycare never sleeps. No. It actually does. We don't have daycare next week. Speaker 4 (1:17) Oh, okay. Speaker 7 (1:18) But the kids, but the older kids, you know. Five plus they're there in school this week. So this Speaker 4 (1:24) should have podcast season now It is for everyone who's got that new school traffic coming through. That's right. Yeah, it's time to time to hop off the album You've been hammering all all summer. That's true. Speaker 7 (1:33) That's true. Yeah back in the car back in the whip Time to time to turn it up Speaker 4 (1:38) Don't text and drive though Yeah, Speaker 7 (1:41) but I do want you to add a red light if you're listening on Spotify I want you to switch to video, you know, just Speaker 4 (1:47) real quick. Speaker 7 (1:48) Yeah, just so you can see my little My little linen number from every other Thursday. Speaker 4 (1:52) Yeah. Look at you. You're pretty, you look like you're about to hit a cocktail party. Speaker 7 (1:55) Yay. I was getting some comments today at work just about how I like, like what, what did I have going on today? Why was I, why was I looking so bougie? And I just, I said, I just, I've been, I've been just shorts and t-shirting it up the last several weeks, you know, hitting that triple digits is easy to get lazy. And I was like, I got these great summer clothes. I got to wear them. I got to, I got to, you know. I gotta put that shit on. Speaker 7 (2:21) even if it is 104 degrees outside. Yeah. Speaker 4 (2:24) Yeah, I get it. Okay, Speaker 7 (2:25) but now turn your screen off because I went shorts today and you're probably being blinded by my thighs. No, your outfit's mad Speaker 4 (2:30) touchable today, though. Yeah. Speaker 7 (2:31) I Speaker 4 (2:32) want to touch the linen on your shirt. I want to see what those shorts are all about. You got some suede shoes. Speaker 6 (2:38) It's true. Speaker 4 (2:38) There's Speaker 6 (2:39) a Speaker 4 (2:39) lot happening. A Speaker 6 (2:39) lot of texture. Speaker 4 (2:40) If I'm in the store and those things are on the rack, I'm walking by and I'm doing a quick little graze. Doing a little, yeah. Yeah. I hit South Congress yesterday for a few minutes. Okay. I always Speaker 7 (2:50) enjoy a South Congress peruse. We Speaker 4 (2:52) had to return some boots to Toccova's that my wife had purchased. So I got my first South Congress little trip in for a minute. Yeah. A lot of stuff there, man. Speaker 7 (3:03) Lots of stuff. Speaker 4 (3:04) Lots of boots. A lot of shopping. A lot of boots to be had. Oh, yeah. You got Allen's straight into Lucchese, straight into Tecovas. Speaker 7 (3:12) And there's like one other one. It's wild down there. Speaker 4 (3:16) Yeah. Speaker 7 (3:17) Did you know our old pals over at Clayton and Crume? Yeah. Out of Louisville, Kentucky. They're going in. Speaker 4 (3:22) Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We stumbled upon their store when we were... At the Derby mm-hmm. Mm Speaker 7 (3:29) -hmm Speaker 4 (3:29) hung out with them. Yeah, Speaker 7 (3:30) did Speaker 4 (3:31) you ever hang with those guys when they came to Austin? Or is that just no I Speaker 7 (3:34) don't think I know I don't and I went out Speaker 4 (3:36) for a night and had a drink with Yeah, got it became a wild night. But yeah, they're moving right in. Speaker 7 (3:40) Yep South Speaker 4 (3:41) Congress, dude Speaker 7 (3:42) Did you hit up Buck Mason? Speaker 4 (3:45) No, I didn't I did we didn't do much outside of Western where okay, okay Yeah, they could have like, Speaker 7 (3:52) you know cleansed your aura and saged you and true. Yeah, probably giving you a water Speaker 4 (3:57) True. There's a lot of places out there burning Speaker 7 (4:00) sage. Speaker 4 (4:00) I asked you Speaker 7 (4:00) how your therapy session was Speaker 4 (4:02) this week. I'm in cowboy appropriation mode right now. Speaker 7 (4:06) And also, would you like this new Western shirt? Speaker 4 (4:09) I don't want that. No, I got a lot of shit to deal with. I got to pack to be a cowboy next week. Speaker 1 (4:16) Yeah, yeah. Speaker 4 (4:17) I don't really know what I'm packing at this point. Can I actually ask you a couple questions? Please do, yeah. So we're doing some cowboy stuff in Montana next week. Like real cowboy Speaker 7 (4:26) shit. Speaker 4 (4:27) Like riding horses. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Here's the issue I'm having. While I do love my cowboy boots, I'm having a lot of trouble putting them on and taking them off, even with a shoehorn. Okay. They're comfortable when they're on, but I'm not looking forward to wearing them. Am I allowed to wear Blundstones on this ranch? Or do I have to go forward with the cowboy boots and just have my wife pull them off me when I'm lying in bed? Speaker 7 (4:52) I mean, there's nothing more masculine than having to lay on the bed while your wife pulls your cowboy boots off of you. It's Speaker 4 (4:58) embarrassing, Speaker 7 (4:59) dude. Speaker 4 (4:59) It's embarrassing. I was doing it last night when I was trying on jeans to make sure that the boots actually looked good with my jeans. Yeah, I think you can go Blundstones. Do you think real cowboys appreciate the people who don't try to completely... like steal their swag yes yeah Speaker 7 (5:16) i think they probably do it's like okay this guy's Speaker 4 (5:18) self-aware he's not trying to be he's Speaker 7 (5:20) not fully cosplaying as like a ranch hand yeah yeah yeah um i my the issue that you would want run into i think with the blundstones is if you go if you go blonnie's on bottom you can't then go like full full cowpoke up top yeah Speaker 4 (5:35) so Speaker 7 (5:36) you have to dial it back like a like a pearl snap shirt is one thing but then like a pearl snap with like you know, a fringy vest and then like your cowboy hat. And now we're like, okay, now you, now you just got to wear the boots. Speaker 4 (5:48) Yeah. Does that make sense? No, I get it. I get it. Well, I have a hat. I have a Western hat, but it ain't cowboy. Right. I think I get my ass kicked in certain bars if I wear this thing. Yeah. Speaker 7 (5:59) Yeah. Speaker 4 (6:00) And so my plan is because I don't want to travel with a cowboy hat. I'm going to go buy a reasonably priced cowboy hat in Missoula. And then that is now my. go-to cowboy hat that I have from Montana. Okay. Story behind it. Whatever. I'm not trying to get an expensive cowboy hat, though. I want one that I can go out on the range with and get dirty. Yeah. I'm going to bring my Amelie Andor cowboy print shirt. Right. Got to. I'm going to bring my double RL cowboy print yellow shirt. Yep. Packing every pair of jeans I own, which isn't that many. Uh-huh. Speaker 4 (6:40) I don't know. I'm worried about it. Speaker 7 (6:41) Yeah, I think you can just lean like a little like outdoorsy too, you know? Yeah. Speaker 4 (6:47) Like Speaker 7 (6:47) more of a Colorado vibe than a mountain vibe. Speaker 4 (6:51) I'm worried my wife is going straight mountain. Yeah, she's going straight up cowboy. She's Speaker 7 (6:56) going like an editorial out of Cowboys and Indians magazine. Exactly. Yeah, Speaker 4 (6:59) she's trying to really do it. And so I'm just worried that I'm going to get just, I don't know. She's going to outdo me. Speaker 7 (7:07) Yeah, yeah. Can you match her? Can you match my? Freak? Yeah, are you going to match her freak? Speaker 4 (7:13) I don't think I can on this level. Like I've seen some of the boxes that are arriving at our house of which there are too many. And yeah, I'm asking her to scale it back a little bit. Yeah. Speaker 7 (7:25) These trips will get you, man. These trips, they really will. We were like reviewing budget the other week and it's just like, yeah, the month where we had travel, that's where our clothing budget got like absolutely fucked. Yeah. You Speaker 4 (7:37) forget that you actually have to pay for the clothes you want to wear on vacation. Yeah. Speaker 7 (7:41) Then all the vacation stuff on top of it. It adds up. Speaker 4 (7:45) Yeah, Speaker 7 (7:45) sure does. Speaker 4 (7:46) Yeah. We'll talk more during wishlist items, but I got something I really want to get for this trip, if I'm being honest. It's not good. Speaker 4 (7:56) Oh, hi, Randy. Hi, Will. Should we just confront the elephant in the room or the car in our parking lot? Speaker 7 (8:05) Do we Speaker 4 (8:06) want to talk Speaker 7 (8:07) about Speaker 4 (8:07) it? I don't know. We just had a car run into a wall, a brick wall in our parking lot. And it's unclear whether it was being driven by Speaker 7 (8:14) somebody. It wasn't. No, it was not. It just wasn't. So we just like the parking brake broke. It rolled down the hill, crashed into the brick. I mean, wild. Speaker 7 (8:24) It's amazing that it didn't hit anybody's car. In the parking lot. Yeah. Brick walls, the property owners. Randy and I are sitting here. We're the only two people in the office. Speaker 4 (8:36) I hear what sounds to me like a truck had hit a recycling container and it splashed bottles all over the street. Speaker 6 (8:42) I thought it was just like the business heck store. The garbage truck was emptying out a dumpster. Yeah, it sounded like something like Speaker 4 (8:48) that. And then I look out the window and I'm like, wait, there's a brick sitting in the middle of the parking lot. I realized that this car just hit the brick wall. I don't know. And Speaker 6 (8:59) by the time that like we heard the noise and Will looked out, it had less than 10 seconds. I don't think there was a driver. Yeah, I think it was just parked and rolled. Either the person like crashed and then immediately hopped out and ran away in the time. Like, but I don't think that's possible. Speaker 4 (9:15) Randy put up a video on Circling Back's Instagram page about this. And I have to say to anyone out there talking about how tall I look in the video. Yeah. Keep talking about it. Yeah. Keep talking about it. You're Speaker 7 (9:25) frame mugging a friend of the pod doing. Speaker 4 (9:28) I never thought this day would come. Yeah. As someone who's. posed in numerous shirtless photos next to Dylan. I never thought that I'd get this type of praise in a video or photo with Dylan. Speaker 7 (9:39) Is it possible that this was a ghostwriting situation? Speaker 4 (9:42) Yeah. Do you think somebody was just like doing Speaker 7 (9:44) like an E40, you know, bounce outside right by the... outside their car, just down Collier Ave. At this Speaker 4 (9:52) junction, we're not ruling anything out. Just ghost riding? Maybe Waymo. The car they got Speaker 7 (9:57) away from? The car got away from them? Speaker 6 (9:58) Maybe Waymo or robo taxis, like technology is, you know, kind of like contagious and it's going to regular cars now. Who knows? Speaker 4 (10:08) Or, or, or. Was Speaker 6 (10:09) this car Speaker 4 (10:09) taking its like first jump into being an autonomous vehicle? Is Speaker 6 (10:12) he Speaker 4 (10:12) trying Speaker 6 (10:12) to Speaker 4 (10:12) be Speaker 6 (10:12) sentient? It was like, I'm sick of seeing all these other Speaker 4 (10:14) cars driving around. I'm doing it alone. Speaker 6 (10:19) Yeah. So it's still out there. It's in a brick wall. Speaker 4 (10:25) Hate to see it. You hate to see it. Speaker 5 (10:27) Yeah. Yeah. Speaker 4 (10:29) We'll update everybody. All right. Let's get into the real meat of this episode. All right. Where do you want to begin? Speaker 7 (10:38) Well, you know, we're headed towards the end of August. And while that does not mean the end of summer nor the end of warm weather. you know, we're beginning to look ahead. So I think we should do a little bit of a postmortem on the spritz season. Speaker 4 (10:56) Okay. Speaker 7 (10:56) And, you know, that's wrapping up here. I'm Speaker 4 (10:59) good with that. Yeah. I'm good with that. What was your spritz of the year, personally? Were you spritzing hard this summer? I wasn't spritzing hard this summer. Speaker 7 (11:12) Spritzes, generally, you know, I like them in like a big wine glass. Speaker 7 (11:18) And I, it just wasn't wine glass season at my house with a, with a 14 month old walking around, knocking things off, off coffee tables and counters and, and what have you. But I was served a spritz a couple of different times over the course of the summer. Speaker 3 (11:35) And I'm, you know, I'm the, the, Speaker 7 (11:37) the end of summer rankings here that we, that we've got pulled up. Speaker 7 (11:42) They they're declaring that that the Hugo Spritz officially dethroned the Aperol Spritz, which means, of course, that it's time for my zag, which is that I actually think Aperol Spritz is better. Speaker 4 (11:54) Last year, I think we can all admit, and if you've been listening to Retail Therapy for a long time, I think you can all admit that we were pretty early on the Hugo. Speaker 7 (12:03) You Speaker 4 (12:04) were Speaker 7 (12:04) very early on Hugo's spreads. No, but Speaker 4 (12:06) a rising tide lifts all ships. And we were talking Hugos early. We Speaker 7 (12:11) were calling out Hugos a minimum of two years ago. Speaker 4 (12:16) Yeah. Yeah. Because I went to a wedding. Speaker 4 (12:20) in 2023? It might have Speaker 7 (12:23) been three years ago. It really might have. 2023, Speaker 4 (12:25) I went to a wedding and they were serving them and I was immediately like, what is this? We need more of this around. This is a spritz I haven't seen before. It's got a cool name like Hugo. If you meet a dude named Hugo, you're like, okay, what buildings around town did you design? Speaker 7 (12:38) It's just the type of boots on the ground reporting and trend forecasting that you get from this podcast. It is. Speaker 4 (12:45) But ever since then, I don't feel like my Hugo intake has gone up that much, despite me seeing them everywhere. Speaker 7 (12:52) Okay, I love the way a Hugo Spritz looks. I prefer the aesthetic over an Aperol Spritz. I think we talked about this. I just don't find the Campari. I don't like the bottle. I don't like the color. Speaker 7 (13:06) I don't, or I'm sorry, the Aperol rather, not the Campari. I'm thinking of a Negroni. The Campari is okay. It's got that darker, bloodier red. The Aperol is like too candy orange looking. If we're judging Speaker 4 (13:20) books by their cover, a Campari spritz looks so much more appetizing than a Aperol spritz. Aperol spritz is to me, when they're served, even if they're served perfectly how they're supposed to look, Speaker 7 (13:31) it Speaker 4 (13:32) still looks watered down to me. Speaker 7 (13:34) Yeah. Speaker 4 (13:34) And that is a turnoff for me. Speaker 7 (13:36) But having said that, I think that the consistency, the flavor of a Naparol spritz is easier to get right and more uniformly satisfying. I agree. Because I get too many Hugos that end up tasting like straight up apple juice. I Speaker 4 (13:48) agree. I agree. Speaker 7 (13:50) They taste like apple Speaker 4 (13:51) juice. Yeah. Speaker 7 (13:53) Have you had a Sardi Spritz on? I've not had a Sardi Spritz. No, we're here. I'll pull this graph up. Speaker 4 (13:58) Sardi Spritz is a vibrant pink Italian aperitivo made with Sardi Rosa liqueur flavored with blood, orange, mango, and passion fruit. And then topped off with Prosecco and club soda. I had a Sardi Spritz while we were in Mallorca. And it was fine. I had no issue with it. It was refreshing. I haven't become a Spritz person as of late. Last two summers, I've... been distancing myself from the spritz. I get to observe a lot. Speaker 5 (14:26) My Speaker 4 (14:26) wife orders a lot of spritzes. It's pretty much her go-to drink during this type of weather. And she enjoyed the Sardi spritz. She has been ordering Campari spritzes more than Aperol spritzes or Hugo spritzes. Speaker 4 (14:43) So is there anything to draw from that? I'm not sure. Time will tell. Speaker 7 (14:47) Yeah. Yeah. And a Campari spritz. Now we're just now we're just one step away from an Americano. Let's see. Right? I'd be Speaker 4 (14:55) fine with that. What's the difference? Yeah, not Speaker 7 (14:56) much. You also brought up earlier this summer the limoncello spritz. Oh. And over the weekend, I got a chance to try a friend of the pods, his non-alcoholic brand. Is it Lapo? I don't know. Lapo's or Lapo's? I actually don't know. Could be Lapo's. I haven't heard him say it out loud yet. But it's L-A-P-O-postrophe-S. And it's NA, but I quite enjoyed the Limoncello Spritz. So I'm looking forward to trying an adult Limoncello Spritz at some point as well. I Speaker 4 (15:26) was fortunate Speaker 7 (15:26) enough to... Not that NA can't be for adults, but... Speaker 4 (15:29) I was fortunate enough to be invited on a boat this past weekend. Speaker 7 (15:35) Always fortunate. Yeah. Always fortunate to be on a boat. And it was an Speaker 4 (15:37) early morning boat sesh. And so I thought, you know what would pair really well with this? An NA Limoncello Spritz. Yeah, it sure would. So I piled those in the cooler and man, was I enjoying those out of the water. Lemon cello is not getting any shouts here. Speaker 7 (15:50) No, no. On the graph. No, the graph completely ignores the lemon cello spritz. I mean, speaking to its, you know, its scarcity, really. Speaker 4 (15:57) Yeah. I guess you do have to have lemon cello. Right. There aren't that many places around town that make it. There are a couple. Do you turn down the lemon cello or embrace the lemon cello? Speaker 7 (16:08) Oh, I don't turn down any alcohol that's just handed to me generally. I Speaker 4 (16:12) don't either. It always shocks me when people turn it down because I'm like, you know, restaurants don't usually give out free stuff at the end of Speaker 7 (16:19) meals. Right. So yeah, I'm imbibing for sure. I Speaker 4 (16:22) got myself into some trouble at a restaurant in Austin a few years ago when they handed out the limoncello and all the girls didn't want it. So I dumped them all into a glass and... Speaker 4 (16:31) That second location was... Crept up on me. Speaker 7 (16:36) This is even... I mean, you know, I'm not immune to any of this. People are walking around at a party, suddenly there's jello shots, and you offer me a jello shot? Like, I can't say no. Speaker 4 (16:45) Jello shots are performative, though. I don't think they're bad performative. You don't think they do anything? No, no, I've never been like, oh, the jello shots really got me yesterday. Huh. Have you ever felt a noticeable buzz from one jello shot? Speaker 7 (16:59) I don't think so, but you can taste the alcohol in them still. You know what I mean? You bring up a good point. Randy thoughts? I Speaker 6 (17:06) don't know. I feel like I'm always drunk when I'm doing jello shots, but is it because of the jello shots? A Speaker 4 (17:13) jello shot's never been a tipping point for me to feel drunker. Is Speaker 7 (17:16) it more of a correlation than a causation? Speaker 4 (17:17) Yeah. Again, though, I don't think I've ever turned one down. Right. I'll at least do one from the batch that has been made. Yes. Yeah. But I also say yes, because I feel like they're inconsequential. Okay. Have you ever done the watermelon? Oh, the Speaker 7 (17:33) what? No, that will, Speaker 4 (17:34) that Speaker 7 (17:35) will activate. Speaker 4 (17:37) Yes. Yes. Activate. Yeah. Speaker 7 (17:40) It will activate. There's like a famous, I feel like this is like an urban legend at this point, but there was a story getting passed around. I think when you're in college of like somebody's friend. That put the put the the watermelon like the scooped out watermelon half that had been soaking in Everclear like on his head Like wore it as a hat while floating the river or something and got alcohol poisoning from Speaker 4 (18:04) it like going into yes, it's soaked into his like I Don't want to think about that. I Don't there's a lot in that situation that things that I'm trying to leave behind in life. Yeah. Yeah, Speaker 5 (18:16) though Speaker 4 (18:16) that No Speaker 5 (18:17) Kind Speaker 4 (18:19) of Speaker 7 (18:20) messed up. Speaker 4 (18:20) Yeah, it's not great Speaker 7 (18:23) So don't do that. Don't do that. If you're going to soak a watermelon in vodka or Everclear, don't wear it as a hat. Don't then wear the rind as a hat. Yeah. Speaker 4 (18:33) Interesting. Yeah. That's something I would have thought of. Yeah. Speaker 4 (18:37) I don't know. I think the Hugo might be a flash in the pan. Speaker 7 (18:41) Well, it's having its moment, Speaker 4 (18:42) I Speaker 7 (18:42) think. Yeah, I think Speaker 4 (18:43) it's getting its shine right now. I don't know where we are this time next year. Speaker 7 (18:47) We caught it on its rise to the top, and if it's overtaking an Aperol Spritz, then I think it's safe to say that it's close to its peak. Speaker 4 (18:53) If Polymarket had odds out for where this would be next year at this time, I think I'm putting my money on Aperol. Speaker 7 (19:02) You don't think it has two summers in it? You don't think it has one summer to kind of like take the throne and then one more summer to rest Speaker 4 (19:08) on its laurels? Maybe you're right. Maybe 2028. 2028, I think Speaker 7 (19:13) Aperol is back as the king. I think like Speaker 4 (19:15) the cool, like I think like people who are doing it as like a cool thing are peaking right now. Yeah, Speaker 7 (19:20) yeah, yeah. Speaker 4 (19:21) And the next summer is all the normies. Speaker 7 (19:23) Because, yeah, because here's the thing. Restaurants are going to see that graph and they're going to be like, any of them that don't have a Hugo Spritz are going to add one. Speaker 7 (19:31) So there'll be, you know, there will be more of an offering based on the trends, ergo more orders of them. Speaker 4 (19:41) You ever wondered about people that like named their kid Claude five years ago and now they got a kid named Claude? Speaker 7 (19:46) Alexa. Speaker 4 (19:47) Alexa. Chat GBT. My sister-in-law's got a dog named Hugo. Okay. People probably think she's real basic at the park these days. Speaker 7 (19:58) Yeah. Maybe she's just a really big fan of that one movie, Hugo. Speaker 4 (20:05) What was that movie? I know what you're talking about. Speaker 7 (20:08) I want to say it had Sacha Baron Cohen in it. Speaker 4 (20:10) Okay. Speaker 7 (20:12) Something about a it's like partially animated or some sort of digital animation. Speaker 4 (20:19) Big Speaker 5 (20:20) old clock. Speaker 7 (20:21) Yeah, there was a clock. There was a Speaker 4 (20:22) clock involved. I've got two episodes left of hacks. OK. Speaker 4 (20:28) I'm really slow
