Speaker 7 (1:35) He gets right up next to the microphone. Speaker 8 (1:37) I hear you can almost hear the eyelashes hit each other. Speaker 1 (1:53) I'm Hamza and I'm Martin and we're the hosts of Out of Character, the funniest podcast in the entire world. Speaker 1 (2:02) I like that. It's a good way to promote ourselves. We are two funny guys having fun enjoying ourselves. And we just know how to have fun, unlike anyone else. If you guys like fun conversations, hot takes, what else? Not too hot. Just kind of lukewarm. Lukewarm takes. Just Speaker 5 (2:16) to Speaker 1 (2:16) get your mind thinking a little bit. Listen to Out of Character on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 5 (2:23) Lisa, tell them about our new show. We have a new podcast. It's called Don't Lie to Me. I'm Lexi Iwano. We're two best friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart. And I'm Lisa DiGiulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references, occasionally different opinions. And at this point in my 50s, I've lived it all. Now in my 30s, being the founder of New Shoes, good taste is my business. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 3 (3:09) Hi, Sabrina. Speaker 2 (3:10) Hey, Will. Speaker 3 (3:12) We're getting to that time. We're getting to that time of year where I have to shut off all my lights and make sure none of the ratty kids come to my house. You looking forward to Halloween? Speaker 2 (3:21) I am. I still, this next weekend is going to be the first of me even. thinking about it at all. I have not planned anything. Usually I've got locked and loaded, but that is just not this year for me when it comes to Halloween. So we're going to be. Speaker 2 (3:43) sussing out what costumes were going to be this year. But I will probably bring back what we wore to the World's Collide tour. I killed it on Monroe's costume. Her pink costume was so good without it being like the Amazon version of the costume that you could just purchase. So wait, I'm sorry. For all Speaker 3 (4:04) of our beautiful listeners out there, and by that I'm talking about me, the World's Collide tour is the one, it's the zombies and... And they fight to the death and only one is alive at the end, right? Speaker 2 (4:15) Yes, it's a whole duel. It's basically like, you know. So Speaker 3 (4:19) which actors survived? Everybody else is killed off, right? Speaker 2 (4:22) None of Speaker 3 (4:22) them. They Speaker 2 (4:22) actually all just got sick. It's crazy. Speaker 3 (4:25) Nice. So wait, is it all the actual people from the movie? Like the stars of Descendants? Yes, Speaker 2 (4:30) so we had Liamani. We had Malachi. Wow. I mean. Speaker 2 (4:35) It seemed like there was kind of three from each. It felt like there was three from Descendants, three from Camp Rock, and three from Zombies is what I think it ended up being. Speaker 3 (4:46) Now, did you go to have fun or did you go for work? Speaker 2 (4:50) I went for fun. I went for fun. This was Monroe's first concert, so it was all about the memories and making it as best as I can. I screwed up. Even though I tried my hardest, I... Totally remember this with our concerts, but the merch sells out like fast. This merch line, Will, was unbelievable. And I, so I got to do like a behind the scenes type thing. They have like a VIP option that you can do when you go in. The kids are on the stage. You get to walk by. You don't really get to like give them, like take a picture with them. You stand like down below. in the seats or whatever. But, you know, then they do a little bit of a sound check, which is like two or three songs. Then you sit down and they do like a small little Q &A and then you're done. And it was cool. Speaker 3 (5:49) Was this in like an amphitheater? This is at Speaker 2 (5:51) Honda Center. So an arena. Wow. Yeah. I'd say like somewhere between like a hunt, like around a hundred people that were doing the VIP thing. But the worst part was that started at like four and the show's not till seven and you can't leave. So then we were like in the arena, we got food, but there was nowhere to sit. So we like Monroe was just sitting on the ground. Like it just, that part was a little like. I wish we could have gone somewhere and like just gotten one went and gone to dinner after. And of course, because that drained her a bit. Right. So by the time seven came drained mom, I was like, Jordan, I think I got an hour in me. I think that's all I got. Speaker 3 (6:34) Wow. And I'm going to get through camp rock one and I got to go home. Speaker 2 (6:38) Seriously. And this show and now Lisa, our producer, Lisa had warned me, but I did not believe that it was going to. It was 940 that I looked at Jordan. I was like, she has school tomorrow. I have to do my podcast. Like, wow. So we didn't end up getting to stay to the very end. I'm sure I'm hoping it wrapped up shortly after. But yeah, I. Oh, it was it was a deal. But and then getting ready. But she loved her outfit. And I put pink little clip-in extensions and sparkle ones in her hair. She felt like just she loved it. Well, I'm so Speaker 3 (7:15) happy to now have adult friends because when I hear things like, oh, I screwed up. when I went to the concert last night, the merch line was so long. That's so much nicer to hear than my old friends who would be like, I screwed up. I took way too much acid and passed out at the concert. And I missed. Yeah, it's like so nice to hear. Jordan Speaker 2 (7:34) was like, look how like the merch line is insane. Look at the bar line. There's not there's like two people in the bar line. Like that's a huge difference at a kid's concert versus when you go and get a drink at your at an adult. Yeah, you probably Speaker 3 (7:46) don't want to be the drunken person like yelling at. Well, there was a group of Speaker 2 (7:50) ladies in front. of me that were getting at it with they were I mean they were up it was so funny but it was a good show I you know there's certain things that I feel like I the hard part with it there was really no storyline it was just like song after song and they they just kind of kept coming on and off stage it wasn't there wasn't anything necessarily to follow and because there's so three different movies that they're pulling from and they also are pulling from like not just the latest zombie movie. They're doing the first zombie music. Yeah, wow. So that was the only thing for me as somebody who has worked in that world and helped artistically direct our tours and our shows. That was a little bit hard for me. I didn't feel like I really 100%, even though we've seen them all, I just felt like I need to be a little bit bigger of a crazy fan to follow how this is working, I guess. It sounds like an awful Speaker 3 (8:48) way to spend a night. No, Speaker 2 (8:50) it was so fun. And seriously, Will, just watching her little face. She doesn't know all the songs. It must be Speaker 3 (8:56) fun. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Speaker 2 (8:57) When the very intro to, you know, the Wicked one, which is her favorite, you know, Wicked Wonderland. When it comes into, you know, Perfect Princess. I mean, her eyes and then watching the older girls around us when Malachi came out. Speaker 2 (9:16) Whoa. Rockstar. Speaker 3 (9:18) Rockstar. I Speaker 2 (9:19) messaged her, his mom, because, you know, Felicia, she came on our show and I messaged her. I got to see her when we were at the VIP thing. I got to chat with her for a bit. But I messaged her and I was like, he's a star. Like, this is wild. As a mom to mom, I am so happy and excited for you because that must be just incredible to watch your son up there just like. I mean, wooing the crowd. It was wild, Will. Speaker 3 (9:46) Well, that is Speaker 2 (9:47) amazing. Speaker 3 (9:49) And I'm glad I missed it for a number of reasons. You would have died. It would have been so funny to watch you struggle. Speaker 3 (9:57) Again, if you have a kid, it's probably a lot of fun. If I'm there by myself or with my wife, something's gone horribly wrong. Speaker 2 (10:03) Jordan was somewhere in the middle. When she was having fun, he was great. When she was kind of sitting down, he was looking at his watch. Tell him Speaker 3 (10:13) to Speaker 2 (10:13) call me. I'll Speaker 3 (10:13) come Speaker 2 (10:13) pick him up next time. I'll come Speaker 3 (10:16) grab him. Well, thank you everybody for joining us and welcome back to Magical Rewind, the show that makes you want to grab your friends, your PJs, and your popcorn and go back to a time when all the houses were smart, the wave tsunamis, and... I didn't have to go to concerts like that, which is an amazing time. I'm Will Friedle. Speaker 2 (10:30) And I'm Sabrina Bryan. Speaker 3 (10:32) Okay, so we're only halfway through one of Disney Channel's most beloved franchises, so what better time to head back to Halloween Town than the spookiest month of the year. It's October. God, is it October already? It's October. And we're keeping things as, it's going to be 20, like 38 before you know it. And we're keeping things as creepy as possible by jumping into the third installment, 2004's Halloween Town. Hi. Were you excited to return to the old Halloween Town? I Speaker 2 (10:59) was nervous when we talked about it last, the last podcast we did and we said this was coming up. I thought this was the one that our girl wasn't in. Me too. So I was a little nervous. I felt happy that she Speaker 3 (11:08) was there though. And Speaker 2 (11:09) then I saw the main picture and I was like, wait. But is she? Because she looks young in that one. And then she pops on and I'm like, oh, OK. Yeah, Speaker 3 (11:18) this Speaker 2 (11:18) is going to Speaker 3 (11:18) be Speaker 2 (11:18) easy. This is going to be easy. Yep. Speaker 3 (11:21) The highly anticipated threequel. Thank you. I'm going to say that a lot today. Take a shot every time I say threequel premiered October 8th, 2004, predictably in a programming lead up to Halloween, a tradition for the channel at the time. And it was shot in. Salt Lake City, of course, mostly at the Juan Diego High School, a private Catholic institution that was surprisingly open to having dark witchcraft portrayed around their classrooms. But that does explain all the hallway scenes with posters on the walls because they were placed there to block anything even slightly religious. And camera angles were positioned to avoid any of the religious statues. And Speaker 2 (11:56) this is different than when they filmed the other ones. Yeah, Speaker 3 (12:00) I think they went to a different spot. The Speaker 2 (12:01) first and the second one, they filmed. The town itself that they filmed in was not Salt Lake City. And it was very cool. I think it was a small town. Speaker 3 (12:11) It was in Oregon. It was in Oregon. Yes, there we go. Speaker 2 (12:13) Okay, I don't know why I Speaker 3 (12:14) thought. Speaker 2 (12:15) Because I think they still Speaker 3 (12:16) do, like, remember they were talking about they had, like, parties there. Yes. Speaker 2 (12:19) And Speaker 3 (12:19) they still do Halloween stuff Speaker 2 (12:20) there. It's Speaker 3 (12:20) still, like, Speaker 2 (12:21) an ongoing thing every year. Well, no, Speaker 3 (12:23) they're in Salt Lake for this one. Speaker 2 (12:24) Changed it up. Speaker 3 (12:25) If you are, anybody you know is interested in the lore of Halloween Town, first, good for you. Secondly, we do see some big changes for the third entry. In the first two movies, Gwen does not like to use her magic, and here for high school, she seems to have accepted it. Another very big change, Sophie, who I completely forgot existed entirely, appears only four times in this movie and doesn't use any of her magic. And it's been said that it wasn't anything personal, they just thought she looked too old, and the audience wouldn't recognize her. Yikes. Also, we've learned that the movie, it's seriously like the whole movie's going on around her, and she's like, hey, where'd you guys go? You doing magic? What's going on? I was like, who is that? Speaker 2 (13:02) Yeah. I was like, Speaker 3 (13:03) oh, that's right. She had a little sister. Speaker 2 (13:05) She had a little sister. But so is this saying it was recasted? Speaker 3 (13:08) No, that was her. Speaker 2 (13:09) That was her. Speaker 3 (13:11) Yeah. She does Speaker 2 (13:11) look very different. Speaker 3 (13:13) I completely forgot the character existed. I was like, who is that? Her Speaker 2 (13:16) little brother definitely looked. Yeah, yeah, but you could tell it was him. You Speaker 3 (13:21) could tell Speaker 2 (13:21) it was him. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I Speaker 3 (13:22) had no idea who that was. She Speaker 2 (13:23) looked like, I thought they recasted her. Me too. I did. Speaker 3 (13:25) I forgot the character existed. Wow. Speaker 2 (13:27) Yeah. Speaker 3 (13:29) Also, we have learned that possibly the most lucrative job in Halloween Town might be owning a moving company. Because in Halloween Town 2, the family moved into a new house, and then they appeared to move once again for this third movie. So I'd like to know what bank is giving out all these witch loans. And as you can probably predict, Halloween Town is available now to stream on the Disney of the Plus, as are all of the Halloween Town movies. You can check it out before or after our recap, but let me give you a little piece of advice. If you encounter a bear in the woods, stop moving, stay calm, and never run away. Or just run faster than whoever you're with. That's really the most important thing you can take away from this podcast. Only run away if the person you're with is slower than you. Now it is time for the synopsis. A 16-year-old witch, Marnie Piper, persuades the Halloweentown Witches Council to let a group of magical exchange students attend her mortal high school. Sabrina, what'd you think of Halloweentown High? Speaker 2 (14:20) This one didn't end up being my favorite, but there were definitely moments that I liked. She was just phenomenal. Like, I could watch her all day. I just love, I really love watching her. This movie wasn't my favorite except for watching her. I Speaker 3 (14:39) think that was a very, very nice way of saying it. Yes, I agree. She's great. The cast is great. The movie wasn't just this. The story was weird. None of it kind of made any sense. The twist wasn't very good. The love interest Speaker 2 (14:54) with Debbie. It was Speaker 3 (14:58) all it was all weird. Yeah, this was this movie seemed thrown together, which I'm sure it wasn't. because there's obviously some great effects and that kind of stuff, especially for the channel. But the movie itself, like the actual story was like, wait, what? Yeah. Anyway. Yeah. The movie was directed by Mark A.Z. Dippy, who is a visual effects legend. He worked on movies like Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and Back to the Future 2, then transitioned into directing. His first film was Spawn in 1997. Then he made a movie we all know very well, the DCOM Pixel Perfect. And just recently, he was behind the camera for 2022's Marmaduke, starring Pete Davidson and J.K. Simmons. Well, let's get into that amazing cast we talked about. Let's start with our returning stars, who are some DCOM legends in their own right. Kimberly J. Brown, my friend, plays Marnie. She's a former Magical Rewind guest. She was just at my birthday party. Love her. Kimberly had already starred in three Broadway shows by the age of nine and got an Emmy nomination at 11. We also saw her as the star of Quint, a really kind of weird DCOM we reviewed a while back. And this one is her last Halloween Town. She doesn't appear in the fourth one, so on the fourth one. Fun, very cute trivia here in 2024. Kimberly married Daniel Kutz, who was also at my party and a good guy, who she met on the set of Halloween Town 2. He played Cal. They reunited more than a decade later and fell in the love. Speaker 2 (16:16) Also a interview for us. Speaker 3 (16:18) Yeah. We're killing it. We're killing it over here with the interviews. Love Speaker 2 (16:22) it. Speaker 3 (16:23) He was funny. He was funny. He Speaker 2 (16:24) was Speaker 3 (16:24) great. And one half of the reason we say big guest stars are in the Dabney Reynolds chair, Debbie Reynolds plays Aggie Cromwell, arguably the biggest star to ever appear in a DCOM, at least in a channel franchise. She had a Hollywood career that lasted 70 years. She starred in movies like Singing in the Rain, How the West Was Won, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which she was an Oscar nominee for. And memorably, she co-starred in Mother, a great movie with Albert Brooks. A former cabaret performer later opening her own legendary dance studio in L.A., she was Tony nominated. Emmy nominated and somehow owned her own Las Vegas casino. Yikes. Speaker 2 (16:57) I did not know the casino. That's crazy. Debbie Speaker 3 (17:01) Reynolds passed away in 2016 at the age of 84 one day after the death of her daughter, Carrie Fisher, better known as Princess Leia. Also worth noting, Reynolds actually does appear in all four Halloween Town movies. Also in all four of the movies and another past podcast, Judith Hogue returns as Gwen Piper. You've seen her on TV shows like Quantum Leap, Roseanne and Melrose Place, and blockbuster films like Armageddon and the greatest film of all time, the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, where she played April O'Neil. Emily, I want to say this right, Emily Roski returns as Sophie Piper. Apparently, it was not only her last Halloween town, it was her last acting gig. And then we got Joey Zimmerman is another four-timer returning as Dylan Piper. And yes, that is. Lucas Grable as Ethan. This was his film debut. He later played Ryan Evans in a little Disney franchise called High School Musical. And for anybody who lives near me in the San Fernando Valley, Grable was working at the Sherman Oaks blockbuster video when he auditioned for this movie, then returned to the clerk position again after he was done filming and only left the position after High School Musical exploded and he had that kind of success. So imagine seeing this movie and then going and renting it from him. Speaker 3 (18:12) And Finn Wittrock, who plays Cody, rose to fame with his breakout roles in the 2014 film Unbroken and FX's American Horror Story Freak Show, where his performance as, I love this name, Dandy Mott. Dandy Mott, I could say that all day, earned him an Emmy nomination. He went on to become a frequent collaborator of producer Ryan Murphy, appearing in projects including Ratcheted and The Assassination of Gianni Versace, American Crime Story, as well as films like The Big Short and La La Land. With three Halloween Town movies in the can, there is absolutely no reason why they have to make it any longer than 90 minutes. We are 100 % sure that no film has to be longer or, honestly, shorter. Everything can be achieved in exactly an hour and a half. So where does Halloween Town High shake out? Drumroll, please, but let's make it a fast drumroll because it's only 83 minutes. That's on the right side of history, but not what we hoped for. As much as you might think we love sub-90, we actually think those seven minutes can probably do a lot for the story. I mean, again, thankful it's short. But let's just aim for the target next time, everybody. And it's written by a name we've encountered many times before, a bit of a legend himself, Dan Berenson. He was an executive producer and writer who helped create Sabrina the Teenage Witch for TV and went on to have writing credits on a ton of DCOMs. Camp Rock 2, Cheetah Girls 2, Twitches 2, The Scream Team, Stuck in the Suburbs, Up, Up and Away, Hannah Montana the movie, The Wizards of Waverly Place. I had to take a breath. And the underrated Eddie's Million Dollar Cook-Off, quite... An insane resume, and we have to have him on. Speaker 2 (19:38) Yeah. Speaker 1 (19:41) I'm Hamza. And I'm Martin. And we're the hosts of Out of Character. It's a podcast. I know there's a lot of them going around, but why should you listen to ours? Well, we're only the best podcast in the entire world. And we talk about pretty much everything under the sun. For example, music we're listening to, underground music, trending music. drama in music worlds. Yes. Sometimes we even talk about just everyday mundane situations in our lives, like the cool Uber driver we just had or the food we just ate that was surprisingly delicious. Or we'll talk about the Met Gala and the looks that they wore. Are they awesome? Are they trendy? Come find out. Because our opinion matters and so does yours. And Speaker 7 (20:22) this is a place where all of our minds can come together and Speaker 1 (20:25) connect. So what are you waiting for? Come connect with us. Listen out of character from Will Ferrell's Big Money Players Network on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Pods, or wherever you get your podcasts. It's called Don't Lie to Me. I'm Lexi Iwano. We're two best friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart. And I'm Lisi DiGiulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references, occasionally different opinions. And at this point in my 50s, I've lived it all. I'm not going to get anywhere fighting. That is wild. I learned that about you today. Now in my 30s, being the founder of New Shoes, good taste is my business. And I've always got something to say. If men were just honest about this, there would be so much more peace in the world. We're going to talk about dating, relationships, beauty, getting older. And a little wiser. We're best friends, but we don't always agree. Because you told us how accommodating you are. Obviously, I would do what I think I could do to fight the fight. But there's only so much fight I can fight. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Liar. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I don't really care. Speaker 6 (22:23) Hi, this is Kylie Brakeman. Angela Geratana. Speaker 7 (22:25) Jeremy Colhane. Patrick McDonald. And Speaker 6 (22:27) we're the hosts of the Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists podcast. The Speaker 7 (22:31) improvised character comedy podcast where each week a new panel of artists discuss their craft. Join us for a panel of wellness influencers. What I try to do is faux journal. I don't know. Have you guys heard of faux journaling? Yeah, it's reading. It's called reading. So we don't like to use that word anymore. Okay. A panel of New Yorker cartoonists. Have you guys done Terry Gross' Peloton class yet? No! Speaker 8 (22:54) I've been dying to. I'm Speaker 7 (22:57) so sorry. I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald at the Wonderland Bookstore on the 14th. Speaker 8 (23:04) That's crazy. I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark Thirty. No way. You have to come to the last bookstore, though. Kim Cattrall is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday. Speaker 7 (23:17) A panel of Eurovision participants. Speaker 8 (23:19) And we do a little. Halloween sometimes. Does the Pope dress up? He winks on Halloween. Speaker 7 (23:25) He gets right up next to the microphone. Speaker 8 (23:27) I hear you can almost hear the eyelashes hit each other. Speaker 7 (23:30) You've never seen Italy so quiet as when the Pope gets up to wink on Halloween. Speaker 6 (23:35) Listen to Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 4 (24:00) I could talk to you for an hour. You're a generational yapper, like me. That's why I had to make yapping a job. And the scams run the gamut. I'm talking about scams from the 1800s all the way up. to today. I also warn you and keep you safe against scammers. Call your grandparents. Tell your parents to stop clicking on links, please.
