Speaker 5 (1:38) I hear you can almost hear the eyelashes hit each other. Speaker 1 (1:41) You've never seen Italy so quiet as when the Pope gets up to wink on Halloween. That's why I had to make yapping a job. And now you can catch full episodes of my show on YouTube. Start listening to Scam Goddess on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 7 (2:27) If anyone wanted to commit a murder, up here would be the greatest place in the world to hide the body. But no one will find it. He acted friendly. He talked friendly. He sounded friendly. They all knew that I did the scary boogie stuff. And they said, maybe she'll find out where this girl is. I saw him violent. Backhanded her. Speaker 1 (2:49) Pow! Speaker 1 (2:53) Listen to The Devil's Quarry Season 2 in the Bone Valley feed on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 2 (3:27) So, I was driving down the street the other day and I saw a poster. Was it a Feeny poster? I wish. Did it wink at Speaker 1 (3:34) you? A ghost Speaker 2 (3:34) force Feeny poster that winked at me and told me I was doing okay, Mr. Matthews. No, it was Smokey the Bear. Speaker 4 (3:44) Oh, similar. And I don't know if Speaker 2 (3:45) either of you have seen this recently, but Smokey the Bear now is jacked. Yeah. He's huge, bro. Oh, yeah. It's so weird. Like Speaker 3 (3:55) Jimbo Smokey the Bear. I know. It's like the newer Ninja Turtles. Did you see the evolution of the Ninja Turtles? Did you see any of the Ninja Turtle movies? Speaker 2 (4:03) The original back in the day, I saw The Secret of the Ooze is one of the greatest films that's ever been made. Speaker 4 (4:08) This is... Speaker 2 (4:09) Go, Ninja. Go, Ninja. Go. No, this is so disturbing. I feel Speaker 4 (4:13) like Speaker 2 (4:13) this is just Speaker 4 (4:13) the like... Yeah, it's like the Instagramization, the social media-ization of all of our bodies. Speaker 3 (4:22) He's huge. Look at the Ninja Turtles. Oh, my God. Speaker 2 (4:27) Ninja Turtles 2, Secret of the Roids. I love all the things you see about how there's some comedian, and I'm unfortunately not going to be, I don't know his name, so I can't shout him out, but he does this great bit about how the Ninja Turtles all wear masks. Yeah, exactly. And he's like, why are they wearing masks? He goes, do you think they're going to walk in and somebody else is going to go, wait a minute, those are some different giant mutant turtles. It's like, it doesn't make any sense. But no, the Smokey the Bear thing had me thinking, do you remember any PSA or kind of important things from your childhood that were Smokey the Bear related that were like big national kind of campaigns? The one we had back east was called Mr. Yuck. Did you guys have Mr. Yuck out here? So Mr. Yuck were green stickers that had a tongue hanging out that you would put on poison bottles. So kids would see like, don't eat that. Don't drink that. That's Mr. Yuck. And there was a commercial and there was like a little cartoon. So it was don't don't eat anything with the Mr. Yuck sticker on it. And I was just thinking, was there anything West Coast related that was kind of the same thing? Speaker 4 (5:40) No, we definitely had wildfire stuff. Give a hoot, don't pollute. Oh, Speaker 2 (5:45) yeah, Speaker 4 (5:45) we had that. Oh, I remember Speaker 3 (5:46) give a hoot, don't pollute. Be kind, rewind. Speaker 4 (5:52) That you're just saying, catchphrase. Give a hoot, don't pollute. This was Mr. Yuck. Speaker 3 (5:56) Weird. Speaker 4 (5:57) By the way. Poison Speaker 3 (5:58) help. I Speaker 4 (5:59) just feel like that's just inviting kids to start calling each other Mr. Yuck, right? It was Speaker 2 (6:05) the late 70s, early 80s. Kids were calling themselves way worse things than Mr. Yuck. Mr. Speaker 3 (6:11) Yuck. Speaker 2 (6:13) So yeah, there was a commercial and all that stuff. But I didn't know if you guys had the equivalent of that. I remember it was like, I would, because again, being back east, anytime you'd run around in the woods, somebody got poison ivy or poison oak. So all of the calamine bottles had like Mr. Yuck stickers on them. Well, it's because Speaker 4 (6:27) you guys hadn't invented clothes yet, right? So you were all just naked. Everyone was naked. You Speaker 2 (6:32) were Speaker 4 (6:32) still living in caves, I think. We'd wear shorts, my friend. Yeah, we were dealing with the horses and whatnot. So I understand. Speaker 2 (6:40) Ticks in your nether regions. This is from the man whose horse died from choking on corn on the cob. Pony! I never had a horse. I had a pony. Susie! Susie! Speaker 4 (6:53) Susie! Speaker 2 (6:54) Should have put a Mr. Yuck sticker on that corner of the cob. Speaker 4 (6:58) No, you know what I remember loving was the G.I. Joe. Oh, I can do it right now. Oh, I can do it right now. Speaker 2 (7:06) Do you Speaker 4 (7:06) remember in like the early aughts when somebody recorded them, like redid them with weird like lines? What were they? Speaker 2 (7:14) I don't remember. There was also they did a whole bunch that were like inappropriate where it was like cocaine. It's like, man, all this pile of stuff is awesome, Billy. Wait a second, Billy. Don't touch that Coke. Speaker 4 (7:25) Wait, they actually did that in the 80s? Yeah. Oh, wow. No, Speaker 2 (7:27) no, no. They did it like a spoof one later. So, yeah, but the early ones were the best. My favorite one I'll always remember is the kid riding his bike down the street and he sees a downed power line that's like zipping and zapping everywhere. He's like, I'm going to go jump that power line, Johnny. It's like, hold on a second, Johnny. Open power lines will kill you. Like, Flint. Yeah, now you can't do that. The more you know. Oh, yeah. Those were the best. He-Man. I've been recently re-watching the original He-Man cartoon, which are just magic. Oh, they're magically delicious. They really are. And it literally ends with the character at the end turning and goes, all right, kids, you know what we learned in this week's episode? We learned that He-Man, and it's just the full-on telling exactly what happened in the cartoon. Yeah, yeah. So, oh. Speaker 3 (8:12) There's a show like that now that Keaton was watching yesterday and it was like Deputy Dog here. Literally, the episode would go on and then all of a sudden Deputy Dog would come in at the end and tell you what the lesson was. Was Speaker 2 (8:25) this an old school original Deputy Dog from like the 70s? Like hot deputy dog? No, no. Okay. Speaker 5 (8:31) No. Speaker 2 (8:32) And there was this guy, too. Oh, Speaker 5 (8:33) I Speaker 2 (8:33) love that Speaker 5 (8:33) guy. Speaker 2 (8:33) He was another one. Droopy. Droopy dog. Droopy dog. But Deputy Dog was this one who was like, I'm here to arrest you, sir. Yeah, it was great. Speaker 3 (8:42) No, this one Speaker 5 (8:43) was Speaker 3 (8:43) more high-pitched. Speaker 5 (8:44) God, cartoons were great Speaker 3 (8:44) in the day. Cartoons were pretty great. My brother was very into all the He-Man, G.I. Joe, whatever, had a bunch of the action figures. And one of our favorite photos of him as a kid was my mom went in to just, like, make sure he was asleep one night. And he was laying with his... face down by the foot of the bed and his feet up by his pillow. And all of the characters were in a row. using the pillow. Speaker 4 (9:08) He gave them the pillow. He gave them the pillow. And so my mom took a photo of Speaker 3 (9:12) it and it's like one of our favorite pictures. And then Keaton did that with his wrestlers without even knowing anything about, without even knowing anything about that picture. Just wanted all of his wrestlers in bed with him. When I went to go get him in the morning, he was sound asleep, head down by the foot of the bed, wrestlers all over the pillow. Very cute. That's Speaker 5 (9:30) awesome. Speaker 3 (9:30) Very sweet. It's cute little things, cartoons and action figures make kids do. I Speaker 2 (9:35) love them. Speaker 3 (9:36) Yep. Even Will, who's 50. Speaker 2 (9:38) Yeah. Speaker 3 (9:38) Welcome to Pod Meets World. I'm Danielle Fishel. Speaker 4 (9:40) I'm Ryder Straw. Speaker 2 (9:42) And I'm Will Friedle. Speaker 8 (9:48) I'm Melissa Jeltsin, host of the What Happened to Her podcast. We're kicking off the season with the Sandra Birchmore story, a case the police wrote off as a suicide in a snowstorm. Her family never bought it, and the man they suspected wore a badge. You Speaker 7 (10:04) never know who that devil is because he's wearing a disguise. Sometimes it's a police uniform. It originally aired August 8th, 2014. The synopsis, Riley becomes the queen of the nerdy group and enjoys it until she learns to be herself. Meanwhile, Topanga is conflicted about her law firm working to shut down a local mom and pop bakery. It was directed by Jonathan A. Rosenbaum. The first of two Girl Meets World episodes he directed. He was directing all the kids' TV at the time, Ant Farm, Austin & Alley, Jesse. He'd go on to direct lots of Disney films. from Casey Undercover to Stuck in the Middle to Electric Bloom. He also directed movies like Benchwarmers 2, Breaking Balls, and Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp. Wait, it's called Breaking Speaker 2 (11:13) Balls? Uh Speaker 3 (11:14) -huh. Speaker 2 (11:15) And it's a kid's show? No, no, no, Speaker 3 (11:16) that's Benchwarmers 2, Breaking Balls. Oh, Speaker 2 (11:19) gotcha, gotcha, okay. Yeah. Speaker 3 (11:21) It was written by Jeff Manel. Manel. Manel. Manel. Speaker 2 (11:27) So Speaker 3 (11:27) before I jump into our guest stars, do you guys want to share your overall thoughts? Speaker 4 (11:32) This was my first time on set. Oh. I was shadowing Rosenbaum. I came in shadow. So I wasn't until I started, the episode started. I was like, I know these lines. I know these scenes. And then I remembered I was on set. So this was my first time really hanging out on set. I'm actually going back through my calendar right now. So this would have been really early in the year, actually, because I'm looking at, you said it aired in August of 2014. But I actually, this would have been like the previous, it would have been January I was going. And so it would have been January of 2014. So it was a full eight months ahead that I was shadowing and hanging out on the set. And this was the first time getting to know the cast. And yeah, it was super fun. And I really liked this episode. I think this is the best episode so far. And I don't know if I'm just biased because I enjoyed the memories of being there. But I also just think that like, The dynamic, like the Riley character is coming. It makes more sense to me and feels more Corey-ish. Yeah. The homage to Boy Meets World with the invitation to the party that turns out to be Speaker 3 (12:40) a Speaker 4 (12:40) geek party is nice without it being too. Yes. It's like a subtle homage like you talked about, Danielle, with the last episode without it being, you know. And then, of course, the Topanga actual very unsubtle homage is nice. Like, I love this. I don't know. I like this episode. I thought it was, I thought by far this is the best episode of Girl that we've seen. Speaker 3 (12:57) I agree with you. I liked it. So I liked it. I liked it more than I anticipated. Um, I, I still, uh, you know, I still have some of my similar critiques, but overall I, I enjoyed it. And maybe I also, I also do have some funny behind the scenes memories and stories of Cloris Leachman. Um, and so maybe that is, maybe that's part of it. Will? Speaker 2 (13:25) I did not like this episode at all, and I did not get it. This was super weird. And Corey can see Topanga in the mirror with him. And she says, I hate this law firm. I'm going to buy this place, but I'm going to stay at the law firm, and you're going to pay for me to buy. And you're not. You're popular and it's not OK to be a geek and a nerd and you can't be friends. None of this made any sense to me. Speaker 3 (13:54) Yeah. This Speaker 2 (13:55) is my least favorite episode we've done so far. This tried to wedge things in that made no sense. Just down to all of a sudden Topanga has a full length mirror sitting up in the living room. I know, I know. What the? I know that Speaker 3 (14:10) is. Speaker 2 (14:12) And again, the whole storyline with now they're buying Cloris Leachman's place. OK, are you quitting your job? No, you're not quitting your job. You're going to stay at the law firm. And not only that, but unless I get an advance on my salary to where you're paying for me to buy this, I'm going to go somewhere. None of this made any sense. This was such a weird episode to me. I did not understand it at all. All Speaker 3 (14:36) right. Speaker 2 (14:38) Yeah, didn't get it. Speaker 3 (14:39) Didn't get it. Okay. Speaker 2 (14:40) I Speaker 3 (14:40) get it. I get it. I get that you didn't get it. I didn't Speaker 2 (14:44) get it. Didn't get it. Speaker 3 (14:46) Guest starring Cloris Leachman as Mrs. Forsky. Genius. Speaker 2 (14:50) A Speaker 3 (14:51) Hollywood legend whose career spanned nine decades. Yep. An Oscar. 22 Emmy nominations, nine wins. She was nominated for 22 Emmy awards? Yes, and nine wins. That's Speaker 4 (15:06) so crazy. Speaker 3 (15:07) Tied for most acting Emmys ever awarded to one person. And she is tied with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Sick. Wow. She was a star of the Mary Tyler Moore show and is in classic films like Young Frankenstein, The Last Picture Show and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Leachman died in 2021 at the age of 94. Speaker 2 (15:29) One of the best, literally one of the best to ever do it. Yep. Speaker 3 (15:32) One Speaker 2 (15:32) of the best to ever do it in the history of the industry. Bar none. Cloris Leachman is on that list. Speaker 3 (15:38) Boy Meets World. Good luck charm. Willie Garson returns to the universe. Shot. Shot. He appeared numerous times on Boy Meets World, all different characters, a tradition that was carried as he now plays Harrison Miller. Garson was a childhood friend of Michael's who is best known as Stanford Blatch on Sex and the City, but also appeared on TV shows like White Collar and Hawaii Five-O and movies like There's Something About Mary and Freaky Friday. Garson tragically passed from pancreatic cancer in the same year as Leachman, 2021, but he was just 57 years old. Speaker 2 (16:11) It was so nice to see him again. I Speaker 3 (16:13) know. Just every time. Speaker 2 (16:14) Because, again, I had no idea he was on the episode. I didn't know. So when he popped up, it was just that moment of, like, that shock of jumping in a cold pool where it's like the, like, it was just so nice to see him again. It really was. I Speaker 4 (16:25) loved hanging out on set with him this week. It was really fun to spend time with him. Oh, yeah, Speaker 3 (16:29) I bet you did. You had quite a bit of downtime then with him because. It's just Speaker 4 (16:32) him and me hanging out. Yeah. Craft service a lot. Yeah, because, you know, when you're shadowing, you're really just kind of watching the director, you know. So there's a lot of sitting around and Willie's the best to sit around on set and talk with. Yeah. Yeah. I really loved it. Speaker 3 (16:45) Cece Baligot arrives as Isadora Smackle. Balagat will appear in 17 Girl Meets World episodes. They have since went on to play Frankie Stein in the Monster High movies. Cece came out as non-binary and transgender in 2021 and has since become an advocate for the LGBTQ plus community and inclusive roles for their community. And then we have Makai Curtis as Felix Schumpert. We were an early start for Makai, who'd go on to star on the show Kirby Buckets, and now plays Kanan Stark on Power Book 3, Raising Kanan. Speaker 2 (17:18) So, I'm sorry, Smackle, this was the first time we saw Smackle, right? Yes, this is Smackle's first Speaker 3 (17:24) episode. Speaker 2 (17:25) All right. I was just, because the way that... Speaker 2 (17:29) Farkle says and smackle. It made it seem like did they did you shoot these out of order ever? Because it seemed like they'd already introduced the character at some point. And then this is the second time they were on the show, second or third time. It seemed like we were kind of supposed to know who that was. Speaker 3 (17:47) I don't think we shot this out of order, but but maybe we did. Speaker 2 (17:52) OK. It just seemed like they introduced a character without introducing a character. Yeah. Like I was already supposed to know who Smackle was. Boy Speaker 3 (17:59) Meets World was never necessarily great with the introductions either. I don't know that maybe we just didn't really change the intro for this character. Speaker 2 (18:07) I just didn't know if maybe it was aired out of order. Speaker 3 (18:10) We have Nathaniel J. Potvin as academic top half, Cameron Lucas as academic bottom half. You've seen him on American Vandal, Alexa and Katie, and DCOM, The Prom. And then we have Christian Weissman as Nerd. This was Christian's first job. He has since appeared in 40 episodes of The Bold and Beautiful as Remy Price. Speaker 8 (18:36) I'm Melissa Jeltsin, host of the What Happened to Her podcast. We're kicking off the season with the Sandra Birchmore story, a case the police wrote off as a suicide in a snowstorm. Her family never bought it, and the man they suspected wore a badge. You Speaker 7 (18:52) never know who that devil is because he's wearing a disguise. Sometimes it's a police uniform. It's called Don't Lie to Me. I'm Lexi Iwano. We're two best friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart. And I'm Lisi DiGiulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references, occasionally different opinions. And at this point in my 50s, I've lived it all. I'm not going to get anywhere fighting. That is wild. I learned that about you today. Now in my 30s, being the founder of New Shoes, good taste is my business. And I've always got something to say. If men were just honest about this, there would be so much more peace in the world. We're going to talk about dating, relationships, beauty, getting older. And a little wiser. We're best friends, but we don't always agree. Because you told us how accommodating you are. Obviously, I would do what I think I could do to fight the fight. But there's only so much fight I can fight. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Liar. Listen on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I don't really care. Speaker 6 (20:43) I Speaker 7 (20:43) could talk to you for an hour. Speaker 6 (20:45) You're a generational yapper, like me. That's why I had to make yapping a job. And the scams run the gamut. I'm talking about scams from the 1800s all the way up. to today. I also warn you and keep you safe against scammers. Call your grandparents. Tell your parents to stop clicking on links, please. So if you like fun, if you like comedy, and you like learning and protecting yourself from criminals, start listening to Scam Goddess on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 7 (21:49) So we don't like to use that word anymore. Okay. A panel of New Yorker cartoonists. Have you guys done Terry Gross' Peloton class yet? No! Speaker 3 (21:57) I've been dying to. Speaker 7 (21:59) I'm so sorry. I'm seeing a reading of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes by Audra McDonald at the Wonderland Bookstore on 14th. Speaker 5 (22:07) That's crazy. I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday and I Speaker 7 (22:10) heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark Thirty. No way. Speaker 5 (22:13) We'll have to come to the last bookstore, though. Kim Cattrall is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday. Speaker 7 (22:20) A panel of Eurovision participants. Speaker 5 (22:22) And we do a little. Halloween sometimes. Does the Pope dress up? He winks on Halloween. Speaker 1 (22:28) He gets right up next to the microphone. Speaker 5 (22:30) I hear you can almost hear the eyelashes hit each other. Speaker 1 (22:33) You've never seen Italy so quiet as when the Pope gets up to wink on Halloween. Speaker 5 (22:38) Listen to Artists on Artists on Artists on Artists on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 7 (22:47) If anyone wanted to commit a murder, up here would be the greatest place in the world to hide the body. But no one will find it. He acted friendly. He talked friendly. He sounded friendly. They all knew that I did the scary boogie stuff. And they said, maybe she'll find out where this girl is. I saw him violent. Backhanded her. Pow! And that's exactly what made us all think he had something to do with it. Speaker 1 (23:19) The clock is ticking down and the woods are calling. There are a lot of demons in Putnam County, but I've met the devil and he's real. I'm Paul Solitaroff and this is Season 2 of The Devil's Quarry. Riley notices a mysterious cool guy sneaking invitations into lockers and squeals in excitement at Maya. Look what's happening. Look what's coming. Maya is significantly less enthused. What's coming, crazy? Riley announces invitations to the seventh grade parties. It's
