Welcome Speaker 8 (4:38) back to Ballroom Breakdown. I am one of your hosts, Danielle Fishel, and joining me as always every week is Kim Johnson Herjavec. Welcome, Kim. Thank you. So fun to be here again. So fun. I was very excited to hear that week two was going to be viral hits night. We last season had TikTok night. But apparently this year they decided not to do the official partnership and it was just viral hits. Exactly. Make it for what you will. Yes, exactly. And I thought that that was I thought it was helpful and made it a little bit more clear that the only part that needed to be viral was the song choice, because I know last year there was a lot of conversation about do we need to incorporate whatever was. Like if there was a TikTok move, does everyone need a TikTok move in the dance? And it was like, well, some people had it. Some people didn't. Yeah, that was confusing. It was confusing. Speaker 2 (5:40) I feel like calling it viral hits night is a lot clearer. Exactly. And then it wasn't so much focus on that, you know? Exactly. Yeah, for sure. Speaker 8 (5:49) Something I am asked all the time by fans of the show, and I would love to be able to clear it up a little bit here on the pod. Can you elaborate on how song selection takes place on Dancing with the Stars? Whose idea is it? Is it collaborative? How does it work? Speaker 3 (6:07) I'm not sure what happened on your season, but from what I know, the celebrities choose a bunch of songs in the beginning. They're asked what songs that they like. And I think that, you know, it's quite collaborative with the pro as well. Sometimes the celebrity is not sure what that song, you know, is with the dance. Yes. So that can get a little tricky. But I think the production work with the celebrities, they obviously want to make sure that you're dancing to a song that you like. So it depends what week it is. I know Dedication Week is definitely all about the celebrity's song choice of what they want. But I think it does come down to the producers and the celebs. And back in my day, it was very much the pros job to do that, Speaker 2 (6:57) to Speaker 3 (6:58) select the songs and things like that. But I know that production have a bit more say in that now, I guess with. you know, the rights that they need to get and things Speaker 2 (7:07) like that. Yeah. For Speaker 8 (7:09) my season last year, there is the, there was a form that we filled out ahead of time and Speaker 2 (7:14) they Speaker 8 (7:14) want you, they encourage you to put as many songs down as possible. So there are like, you know, descriptions, like if, you know, songs that, songs that remind you of love or songs that, you know, whatever. And then they want to know. every single thing you would, could possibly like. Um, and the more songs you write down, the better and the more open you are, the better. And then certainly, uh, after submitting all of those, I didn't necessarily know. I still don't know how to hear a song and know what dance would be good with that. I have no clue. So there would be times that I would have included a bunch of songs that I loved. And then Pasha was like, but we can't, do the dance we have to do this week, none of those will work. Yep. Speaker 3 (8:07) But you've chosen these songs so the producer's like, whoa, you like that song, make it work. Yes. Oh my Speaker 8 (8:12) gosh. Yes. Or then Pasha would say, you know, let's listen to some of the songs that you like and then let me think of something that I think could be good that would kind of fit this. Or there were a couple of times that thankfully production would say, here's a song that hasn't been done in a long time that we think, and they were great about it. Sometimes they had great suggestions. That's good. Have you ever felt like a song made or broke your performance? I Speaker 3 (8:43) think actually when I danced with my now husband, Robert Herjavec, on our first dance, you know, they won, especially the first dance, Robert was from Shark Tank. They wanted a little bit of a Shark Tank theme with money. And I can't remember the first song, but it was. Speaker 3 (8:58) something not really appropriate. And Robert was like, oh, I don't know about that. Like it was really like, he's not very funky. Okay. And he's like, oh, I don't know about that. But we got what they wanted to do. And they, production were the ones that came up with the song Bills and it had just come out. And that really made that dance for us. I've got feels, you know that song? Yes, yes. And so that was production that came up with that, not me. And we both loved that song and then we had money flying at the end, like we did a deal and we had the troupe in it. So that song really worked with our theme and the cha-cha. So that was great. Speaker 2 (9:34) Yeah, a recent one for sure. I love that. I love that. I know for my season, Pasha Speaker 8 (9:42) and I, for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame week, one of the songs I had put on my list was an Aerosmith song. And it just so happened that Pasha said, this song you chose is my favorite song of all time. And he said, if we can get this song, I would absolutely freak out. And we were like, oh my gosh, we have to do it. We have to do it. And they couldn't clear it. Oh, no. And we just kept thinking, oh, my gosh, what are we going to do? Like, oh, I want this so bad. And I started asking around, you know, we my husband knows a lot of musicians. I started asking around, do we know anyone who knows to clear it? Steven Tyler or, you know, who could we reach out to? And we ended up putting out a bunch of feelers. And at the last minute, Steven Tyler cleared it for us. OK. That is amazing. And I, it just, it made our entire week. It was, it was everything. So meant to be. Yeah. So we were, we were thrilled about that. So I Speaker 2 (10:42) do think Speaker 8 (10:42) song choice Speaker 2 (10:43) is, it's just so important, you know? You know what, when you, sorry, when you get the song, the dance, the costumes, all of that together, it Speaker 3 (10:52) really makes the dance. Yeah. It Speaker 8 (10:54) really does. Like you mentioned for your husband. it made him, he loved the song. Like if he had had to perform to a song he wasn't really confident in and something he didn't really like, it would have changed everything about his dynamic. Speaker 3 (11:07) For sure. You would have seen it. It would have, you know, shown. So it does make a huge difference, I think. Speaker 2 (11:14) Well, Speaker 3 (11:14) jumping Speaker 8 (11:14) into dance number one, we got Jenna Dewan and Val Shmerkovsky. I got to hang out with them this past weekend in Las Vegas for the iHeart. Oh, how fun. It was so much fun. Jenna is an absolute dream. She is just, she's wonderful. She's so down to earth and beautiful and funny and she's all of the things. So that was really great to get to see them and see her and Val together and their dynamic. And it was very fun. We saw in her package that she really took Carrie Ann's feedback. to heart and that she was, you know, dancing solo and she needed to connect with her partner, especially since she has one of the best dancers in the world as a partner. She sure does. Yeah. Last week, they got a total of 19. This week, they danced a jive to the song Animal by Cat's Eye. So Speaker 2 (12:09) one of the fan favorites kicked off Viral Hits Nights. What were your thoughts on this dance? Well, I think they're amazing. And I do think that Speaker 3 (12:17) she had really thought about what the judges had said. Yeah. I think she's in a tricky position because she is clearly like so incredible and I think that she does have the eyes on her as people being a little nitpicky. Yeah. And so I think tonight she was, she didn't really care. I think she got out of her head and she was just in the dance and she loved what she was doing. I thought it was a really, really good dance. Yeah, I thought she was incredible. I loved them together. Speaker 2 (12:48) Yeah. Speaker 3 (12:48) Obviously it was jam-packed full of content. I love these costumes too, these costumes. I Speaker 8 (12:56) know. Speaker 3 (12:56) Weren't they Speaker 8 (12:57) incredible? Really nice. You know, I get a little nervous whenever someone starts in the garage. There's something about the garage to me that just feels like. an energy suck you know you're it just feels like how are we going to get out of here and you always do and I and I I love the way that they're able to decorate it but the minute they started in there I was a little like oh no not the garage I know you're gonna Speaker 3 (13:23) get out of it and it looks great on tv looks great Speaker 8 (13:26) on tv but it's hard to get out of quickly and get to the floor but they did a great job of it and these costumes I thought these costumes were phenomenal yeah Speaker 3 (13:34) maybe they'll steal them for Halloween or something. I Speaker 8 (13:37) know, you know, seriously, they should. So Carrie Ann Inaba gave this dance a seven, said that they danced well in their partnership. She didn't act like it was a solo. Bruno gave them a seven, said great speed and she didn't miss a beat. And Derek Hough, who was the third judge to speak, which means he only got one word while there. That Speaker 2 (13:56) was so tough tonight. I guess they had to get through it. But Speaker 8 (14:00) yeah, that was. Speaker 2 (14:01) I mean, Speaker 8 (14:02) tonight's the first night they had 14 couples in only two hours. Yes. Like last, you know, last week they had four hours, 16 couples. I know. So Speaker 2 (14:12) a Speaker 8 (14:12) lot more time. Yes. But Derek also gave them a seven and he, his one word was fast, fierce and fantastic. It was really fast. It Speaker 3 (14:22) was. It was. Yeah. I mean. I think they're just going to get better and better every week. And I think it was fun. We got to see her in this style. And, you know, I always love the second week because they normally do a Latin dance if they've done a Boro dance. So you get to see the two different styles. So, yeah, I think she felt very comfortable in tonight's dance. I think so too. Speaker 8 (14:45) What would you have given this Speaker 3 (14:47) dance? Speaker 2 (14:47) I would have given a seven as well. Yeah? Yeah. Okay. Would you have gone higher? I think I would have given an eight. I think, but you know what? A seven or Speaker 8 (14:57) an eight. I feel like I didn't notice, you know, like Bruno said that she didn't miss a beat. I didn't see any kind of, I couldn't point to a mistake or a flaw per se. It was very fast. It was jammed full of content. Maybe I would say I could have, I would have. like maybe higher knees? There could have been some moments where like very... I think Speaker 3 (15:21) sometimes in the job, like for someone that's not a ballroom dancer, having the weight really over the balls of the feet, Speaker 8 (15:27) it Speaker 3 (15:28) instantly changes you from like professional dancer to ballroom Latin. It's such a different, it's so strange. Yeah, the best, you know, commercial dancers in the world will still find it difficult getting into this style of dance. That's going to come for her. So that would have been my only one thing. Speaker 2 (15:48) Okay. I mean, that's being super nitpicky. Yeah. Yeah. I get it. I get it. Speaker 6 (15:59) What would change if you stopped letting money stress run your life, sis? I'm Mandy Money, host of Brown Ambition, the podcast. I'm speaking with more artists, policymakers, and performers like actor Stephen Root. I Speaker 7 (17:08) think for me to be any good or for any character act to be any good, you've got to put enough of yourself and your empathy for people in it. I'm a people watcher. You see that guy going down the street and go, Yeah, I can use that. Speaker 4 (17:21) Open Igloo co-founder Alia Mohamed. Speaker 6 (17:24) I love staying on top of what is going on in our city, what is going on in city politics, what is on renters' minds, and taking all of that knowledge to build a platform that hopefully is going to make New York City better in the long run. Speaker 4 (17:37) And actress and singer Melissa Arrico. Speaker 6 (17:40) Partnership took on a whole other meaning when I started making my own. It's like you with a great actress or actor. It was best to come out of your trailer full of life and just face another person who's full of life and don't talk. Speaker 4 (17:56) Listen to Here's the Thing on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, I'm Michael Imperioli. I want to tell you about my new podcast, Underground Zero. Speaker 4 (18:11) It's about what happened in the aftermath of the 9-11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. We're looking at the opportunity of a lifetime for us and the other families. While the world was mourning, five powerful New York families saw an opportunity. The debris is supposed to go to the city-owned salvage yard, and some of it will. They would go on to make millions of dollars. What's in the tunnels? Gold bars, silver ingots. It could be worth half a billion. And they would have made more. If it hadn't been for one courageous cop. Speaker 8 (18:41) No, Dad, don't. You're going to need Speaker 4 (18:42) all of us. I'll call you when I can. Speaker 8 (18:44) Frank, be careful. Speaker 4 (18:45) Underground Zero, starring Steve Sciarrappa, Ray Abruzzo, and me, Michael Imperioli. Would you be willing to see your family go to pieces? Some ways it already has. Listen to Underground Zero on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 5 (19:04) The World Cup is over, but if you caught the soccer bug and aren't sure what to do now, check out our podcast, Big Kick Energy. I'm Cameron Dicker, the kicker from the Los Angeles Chargers, most accurate kicker in NFL history, but I was raised on the soccer pitches of Shanghai. And I'm here with Timmy Tillman, LAFC star, grew up in the academies of Germany and now under the bright lights of Major League Soccer. So, we know a little something about kicking balls. Maybe you're new to the game, or you're ready to take your passion to the next level. Each week we'll tackle things like who's winning the Premier League this year. Playing like a number 10. Do you know what that means? Then we go over to France. Ligue 1. Ligue 1. Ligue 1. Oh, damn. He knows more. He's better than me. What do you think is harder? Scoring a penalty kick or scoring a field goal? He's in the NFL and I'm like, just a big factor. I do enough. That's crazy. Join us each week for a quick chat with your soccer-loving bros about the best sport in the world. Soccer. Just don't tell my coaches I said that. Listen to Big Kick Energy on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Hey, what's up? I'm Tony Gonzalez. And Speaker 2 (20:06) I'm October Gonzalez. But you can call me Toby. We want you to join us on our new podcast, No Safe Words with October and Tony Gonzalez. We get real about marriage, parenthood, sex, divorce, and all the nitty gritty stuff we all think about, but just don't say out loud. I hate that job. You're probably just going to meet some rich guy and he's going to whisk you away and I'll never see you again. Speaker 4 (20:27) Would you Speaker 2 (20:28) say D-list actor? D? Speaker 7 (20:32) I don't Speaker 4 (20:32) even know. There's such a thing as D. Speaker 2 (20:33) No, no, no. I mean, like. Speaker 4 (20:35) I didn't even get on the C-list. Like, I'm not even Speaker 7 (20:36) average. I'm not even Speaker 4 (20:37) passing. I'm failing. Listen to No Safe Words with October and Tony Gonzalez, part of My Cultura Podcast Network. Available on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 1 (20:51) Hey, it's Bobby Bones. Join me and former NFL quarterback Matt Castle every Wednesday on our podcast, Lots to Say, with me, Bobby Bones, and Matt Castle. We also bring in friends, they're mostly Matt's friends, who are current or former NFL players, some of the biggest names in music and entertainment, and then we have some really great conversations that can pretty much go anywhere. The great Pac-Man Jones. Speaker 4 (21:11) After the game, the whole national task force for police officers was at the stadium. Like, hey, buddy, yeah, you, Adam? Come Speaker 1 (21:19) on. And one of my favorite segments we do is called Situational Awareness, where Bobby and I give each other real-life situations and figure out what we'd actually do. You're in training camp, and the rookie quarterback has one good throwing session in front of the media. Suddenly, everybody online says he should start over you week one. How do you handle this? You just go back out to practice the next day and wait for him to mess up. Listen to Lots to Say with Bobby Bones and Matt Castle on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Speaker 7 (21:50) What up, y'all? This your main man Memphis Bleak right here, host of that Rock Solid podcast. And each week, we bringing you exclusive looks inside music, everything happening inside the culture. Some of the best conversations with the biggest names in the game. You Speaker 5 (22:04) had a little bit more pressure to be good. And they didn't care if you was a girl. Like, you wasn't getting no points because you was a girl. If you not trash, you better be not just good, you better be great. Speaker 7 (22:15) On Rock Solid, we talking the rap legends. Hit-making producers, rising stars from the golden era to the future of this hip-hop game, where we keep it 100 % unfiltered and keep it nothing but rock solid. Yeah. The thing about Jay, my opinion is, he's been so great at being seen but mysterious. You know what I'm saying? He don't got to come talk about nothing. Nothing. You figure it out. So it's always a mystique and mysteriousness behind him, but it ain't like you don't see him. Listen to Rock Solid on Black Effect Podcast Network, iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you stream podcasts. Speaker 8 (23:02) Dance number two, we had Ciara Miller and Brandon Armstrong. In their package, we saw Carrie-Anne's comment about her having a lot of trauma hit deep for her. She feels very vulnerable performing, but admits she blacked out and was just scared. Last week, they got a 15. This week, they danced a tango to No Broke Boys by Tinashe. Yes. Speaker 3 (23:26) What Speaker 8 (23:26) did you think of this dance? I Speaker 3 (23:28) love these two together. And I liked her in the ballroom. I liked her in the tango. I thought she had moments where her frame was really good. What did I write down here? She was very committed. She could fix her left arm a little. But I thought overall it was a really solid, good dance. Speaker 2 (23:48) Yeah. Yeah. Speaker 3 (23:49) I Speaker 8 (23:49) think it was definitely better than last week's. Yeah. And not necessarily even because of specific things in her technique or dance. Yeah. Last week, I didn't realize it because I don't know her quite as a personality very well. I had never watched any of the shows she had been a part of. But seeing her this week compared Speaker 2 (24:12) to last week really makes you realize what a deer in headlights she was last week. Right. The commitment. Yeah, she was committed. That Speaker 3 (24:19) was Speaker 2 (24:20) the first thing I wrote down. Like the commitment you could just tell. Speaker 3 (24:23) Yes. Speaker 2 (24:24) She really seemed livened up. All right. She Speaker 8 (24:28) got Speaker 2 (24:28) some of those first week jitters Speaker 8 (24:30) out of the way. Speaker 2 (24:31) Yes. And now Speaker 3 (24:32) she's like, okay, I get this. I've been here before. Yeah. I'm going to own this floor. Yeah. You know? So I felt that with her tonight and I saw moments of a great tango that her and Brandon did. Yeah. Speaker 2 (24:46) Yeah. I absolutely Speaker 8 (24:47) love Brandon as a teacher. Speaker 2 (24:51) I know. Speaker 8 (24:51) Isn't he great? He is just. He's just wonderful. And I think one of the greatest things about him is that he is, he can go from being a wonderful teacher and, you know, dance expert and two minutes later be talking to you about any number of subjects. He can talk about everything and he's, he's relaxed and he's calm. And so, yeah, I think this is a great partner for her. I Speaker 2 (25:20) think so Speaker 3 (25:21) too. And I think she's just really coming into her own now. Like she's in it. She's like, all right, I got this. I Speaker 8 (25:27) got it. Yeah, it was really nice to see her come alive. And I also, in her package, she talked about the fact that she knew if she had started crying last week when Carrie Ann mentioned that to her about her pain, that she would have just been a wreck. And I could see that last week when... She just froze and she was really trying to keep it together. So it was great to see her come out of her shell. Carrie Ann Inaba gave her a six and said, Sierra has entered the building and very proud of her veracity. Bruno Tanioli gave it a six and said it was beautiful. Derek Hough said it was a six and she radiated. Very in it tonight, start to finish, and then said that she should watch the frame, that maybe she has some frame issues. That's what you're talking about with the left arm? Speaker 3 (26:08) Yeah, she's got to watch her frame a little bit. But again, it's so foreign to me. put in that position. So she's just got to watch her frame a little, Speaker 2 (26:17) but Brandon, he's great and he'll, he'll fix that. Speaker 8 (26:21) Yes. Speaker 2 (26:21) So that was an 18 for 18 out of 30 for her. Speaker 8 (26:25) What would you have given this dance? Speaker 3 (26:26) Yeah, I would have, I would have given a six as well. Speaker 8 (26:29) Okay. Speaker 3 (26:30) Yeah. Speaker 8 (26:31) Yeah. I think, I think a five or a six again, I feel bad saying a five because I don't think there was anything. that was wrong with it. Um, but, but personality wise, I'm going to give it a six because it was so nice to see her personality and it was, it was really, I'm like, yes, if she can work on some of the dance frame issues, some of those things and keep the personality she had tonight, Speaker 3 (26:57) she's going to go far. She is. She is. I think she's a crowd favorite too. People love seeing her and she's yeah. You just want to see people comfortable on that floor. And that's Speaker 2 (27:07) what I felt with her tonight. Speaker 8 (27:08) Yeah. Yeah. Speaker 2 (27:09) It was, it was nice. I feel like this, honestly, I think everybody felt and seemed more Speaker 8 (27:15) comfortable.
