Speaker 3 (0:00) Hello, it's Ed here from the Off Menu podcast that you are listening to right now. You'll know that I'm doing a brand new stand-up comedy show on tour next year, Fresh Hell. And we are delighted to announce that we are doing two more shows at the London Palladium, Friday the 19th of March, Saturday the 20th of March. You've got to come to these shows. They're going to be great. They're on sale now. Edgamble.co.uk for ticket details. Speaker 3 (0:37) Welcome Speaker 2 (0:37) to the Off Menu Tasting Menus. We get a fan favourite back on the podcast. We give them the menu of another fan favourite and they react to it. This week, our returning fan favourite guest is... Speaker 3 (0:49) Paul F. Tompkins! Paul F. Tompkins. I remember the first time we had Paul on, James, I was so excited. I love Paul F. Tompkins' work. We interviewed him in America. It's fantastic that he was over in the UK to record this. Speaker 2 (1:02) Yeah. Speaker 3 (1:02) Delighted to have him back on. We'll be giving him the menu of another fan favourite. Speaker 2 (1:06) This feels like the second part of like a foreign exchange student kind of like pen pal situation. You go and visit them where they live. Yeah. And now he's come into our Speaker 3 (1:15) home. Learning all our little ways. Speaker 2 (1:17) Yeah. That's exciting. Did you do foreign exchange when you were a kid? No, we had pen pals with like just another school in England and we went to their school at one point. Obviously, my one kind of didn't want to hang out with me when he met me in person. He kind of ditched me for this other... He'd kind of hang out with his friend and his pen pal from my class. So I was Speaker 3 (1:36) kind Speaker 2 (1:36) of just drifting around Speaker 3 (1:37) on my own at this other school for the day. But look at you now. That kid is going to be gutted right now. You could have been friends with James Acaster. Speaker 2 (1:44) That kid's David Beckham. Speaker 3 (1:47) Very excited to speak to Paul, of course. Listen to Spontaneanation, Paul's podcast. He's got another podcast called Threedom as well. Listen to that one. He's on all sorts of podcasts. He's brilliant. Speaker 2 (1:56) Always funny. Always a pleasure to talk to. Let's see how he reacts to this menu, Ed. This is the off-menu tasting menu of Paul F. Tompkins. Speaker 3 (2:14) Welcome back, Paul, to the Dream Restaurant. Hi, Paul. It's good to see you. Thank you. It's good to see you, fellows. We were just chuckling there at Ben's clap. It was fun. Ben does a little clap to... The clap, though, what does that actually do? It syncs up the sound. Shouldn't it be in front of the cameras, though, to sync up the sound with the audio? Speaker 2 (2:32) Okay. Oh, he's telling you it's boring. Wow. That's the earliest Ben's ever said to us, this is boring. Is that wrong? No, no, no. That was boring. It Speaker 3 (2:39) was Speaker 2 (2:39) a Speaker 3 (2:40) genuine question from me, Paul. That was just my actual personality. Speaker 2 (2:43) Only time that Ed's ever shown an interest in Ben's life. Telling him he's Speaker 4 (2:48) probably doing something wrong. Speaker 2 (2:50) Oh, it was wrong. Shouldn't it be in front of the camera? Yeah. Speaker 3 (2:53) So everything we're saying now, they will have already heard it. Right. And our faces are doing it right now. Speaker 2 (2:59) Yeah. Our faces are doing it right now. Speaker 4 (3:02) Our faces are doing it right now. Speaker 2 (3:04) Yeah. Yeah. But they've already heard it. Yeah, they've already heard it. Yeah, but our faces are doing it right now. I Speaker 4 (3:10) should not have gotten high before this. This Speaker 2 (3:13) is hard for me. Listen, man, this is different territory now. When you came on this podcast, it was early days. We were boys. Yeah. We're men now. You can't push us around like you did the first time. Speaker 4 (3:22) You know what? I respect that. Speaker 2 (3:23) Yeah. I Speaker 4 (3:24) respect that. Do you remember being pushed around by Paul? Speaker 2 (3:27) Yeah. Yeah. Push us around. Speaker 4 (3:29) Oh, Speaker 3 (3:29) I don't push people. Oh. Speaker 2 (3:32) No. Speaker 4 (3:33) I'm a sweetie. Speaker 2 (3:34) You are a sweetie, actually. I'm Speaker 4 (3:35) a little Speaker 2 (3:35) sweetie. We were just little boys with little dicks. And now we're Speaker 3 (3:38) going Speaker 2 (3:38) to show him who we are. Oh, dicks. Okay, sorry. He would show me who we are. We've got Speaker 3 (3:44) to Speaker 2 (3:44) show him who we've become Speaker 3 (3:45) now. Speaker 2 (3:45) Yeah. Speaker 3 (3:46) And we've started. Paul, it's a delight to have you back. Speaker 4 (3:49) I'm very happy to be back. I'm glad this all worked out. To experience Speaker 2 (3:52) a tasting menu. Yes. When we last saw you, it was February 2020, before everything kicked off. In kickoff, it did. Yeah. How have you been since we saw you? Speaker 4 (4:07) Anything happened? I've, what's funny now is that when you see somebody you haven't seen in a while in the States now, and you ask them how they are, they always start with, I mean, you know, it's like, understood, understood. Just in general, you as a human being, how are you doing in your day-to-day life? Speaker 3 (4:28) Don't feel like you have to. We know what's going on. We just want surface level. Yeah, you're not a bad person if you start with the injustice. It's like, yes, understood. Yeah, if you start going, fantastic, everything's great. No one's assuming you think everything's great. Are you kidding me? This Speaker 4 (4:46) person doesn't care. What you do is you give a high-pitched, oh, good. Speaker 4 (4:51) Yeah, pretty good Sells it. You know. You know exactly what's going Speaker 2 (4:54) on. They know. Yeah. That's good. Did you turn down the ad? Speaker 4 (5:03) Let me tell you something. They offered me $1,000 to go over there. What? And I said, uh-uh. I have principles. That was a life-changing amount of money. That was to Speaker 2 (5:15) emcee the new act showcase. Yes, Speaker 4 (5:17) the new face, the fresh faces. The new faces. Riyadh new faces. I was going to do the character night. Yeah. And it's too bad. You Speaker 3 (5:26) had to pay for your own flights as well, though, right? Yes. Out of the 1,000. Yes. Speaker 4 (5:30) And then some sort of travel tax that I had Speaker 3 (5:33) to pay upon arrival at the venue. And accommodation. Yeah. Total nightmare. Speaker 2 (5:39) Yeah, no one talks about, yeah, the comics are often the most disrespectful deals I've Speaker 3 (5:44) ever Speaker 2 (5:44) come across. Speaker 4 (5:45) You don't have my principles. Speaker 3 (5:46) Me and James are setting up the Riyadh Free Fringe. Because we feel like ticket prices have got too high. It used Speaker 4 (5:52) to be great. Speaker 3 (5:54) The Speaker 4 (5:54) Riyadh Comedy Festival used to be so lovely, and now it's just, it's too big. Yeah, it got too big. It's too corporate, may I say. Speaker 3 (6:02) They Speaker 4 (6:02) got Chili's. Speaker 2 (6:04) Everyone knows that. Starbucks. Everyone knows that. That's very well above the size. It's really too bad Speaker 4 (6:10) the money was so low, because I was looking forward to building a bridge between our cultures. Speaker 4 (6:16) You know, in many ways, America's more oppressive. Speaker 2 (6:21) That's a good point. Yeah. It's a good point. Speaker 4 (6:24) Too bad. Speaker 2 (6:25) Now, you've heard some taste of menus in the past. Yes, I have. Is there any, you know that we're going to give you another guest's menu? Yes. Anyone that you're hoping for? Anyone that you think are absolutely not that person? Do Speaker 4 (6:38) you know it's difficult because they get sort of confusing because the guests are... It seemed very put off by the whole idea. I think, was the first one John... John Kearns. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's the one that sticks in my mind the most. Yeah. Speaker 3 (6:58) So he had Miriam Margulies's menu. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I think people come into the Dream restaurant and they assume that they're just going to be able to pick what they like again because it's a dream. Speaker 4 (7:08) Yeah. But this is a forced dream. Speaker 3 (7:09) We're making... This is a nightmare. Well... Well... It might be a nightmare. It might not be. It depends on the menu. But we are essentially making you have a specific dream, sort of like a Black Mirror episode. Speaker 4 (7:22) Okay. You're not going to give me Stevie Martin's, I hope? No. No. Speaker 3 (7:26) Don't worry. Speaker 4 (7:27) Didn't like Stevie Martin's, Speaker 3 (7:28) Benny? Main Speaker 4 (7:28) course of nachos? Speaker 3 (7:29) Yeah. Speaker 4 (7:31) Wasn't all her food the same colour? Speaker 3 (7:33) It was, yeah. It had a consistency in the colour palette. Speaker 4 (7:37) I like a pop of colour. Speaker 2 (7:39) Yeah, sure. I think there's pops of colour in this. Oh, there's actually quite a lot of colour in this. Looking at it. Actually... Ooh. We didn't really bring it up at the time, but there is not... No, this is all the same colour. Yeah, this is... Pretty similar color-wise. You know when I said there's some colors in this, I meant the opposite. Yeah. Speaker 4 (8:02) Why? Speaker 3 (8:03) Well, I don't know. I think I just didn't know. But Speaker 4 (8:06) it sounds like you're trying not to say that you lied. Yes. Speaker 3 (8:11) It wasn't a lie. I just said... I meant the opposite of what I said. Speaker 2 (8:14) I meant the Speaker 3 (8:14) opposite of what I said. That sounds like a lie. And it was an error. It was an error. So it didn't come from the heart. I would have led with, I was mistaken. I was, okay. Rather than, I meant the opposite Speaker 4 (8:23) of what I said. Speaker 3 (8:24) I meant... You're lucky we're not in court. What I said was not what I meant. Unfortunately, it's the exact opposite of what I said. But is that a lie? Who are we to say? See, if you were the opposing lawyer and you made that noise, I think I've won the case. Paul just Speaker 4 (8:41) looked at Ben. I feel like I'm about to deploy Ben's famous catchphrase, this is boring. Do you know, the last time we were together, The only thing I remember from the episode is the famous Canary in a Coal Mine. Yes. Speaker 3 (8:57) Conundrum. Canary in a Coal Mine. I also remember the Brussels Sprouts song. Yeah. You Speaker 2 (9:02) sang a song about Brussels Sprouts. Yeah. Speaker 3 (9:04) I Speaker 4 (9:04) don't remember Speaker 3 (9:04) that. You seemed to know the song off by heart at the time, so it's a shame not to Speaker 2 (9:08) talk about it. Speaker 3 (9:08) We both knew Speaker 2 (9:08) it off by heart at the time, Paul. And Speaker 3 (9:10) I didn't. Speaker 2 (9:10) No. I tried my own version. We Speaker 3 (9:12) did a song about meatballs. Speaker 2 (9:13) Oh, Speaker 3 (9:13) maybe it was the meatballs song. We Speaker 2 (9:15) did both. Yeah. On Speaker 4 (9:16) top of spaghetti? Speaker 2 (9:17) Yeah, yeah. Is that the one? Well, we did that and we did the Brussels sprouts song. Speaker 4 (9:21) What's the Brussels sprouts song? Do you remember it? Speaker 2 (9:23) Yeah. Let's hear it. So do I. Let's do it together. This is happening again. Brussels Speaker 3 (9:29) sprouts, they're going Speaker 2 (9:31) down. Brussels sprouts. Going as well as last Speaker 3 (9:35) time. Speaker 3 (9:39) Brussels sprouts, they're going south. Yeah, I thought they were going south. Speaker 4 (9:42) What did we determine about the canary in the coal mine? Speaker 3 (9:46) I cannot remember that. Speaker 4 (9:48) I think the idea was testing something. Something being the canary in the coal mine. And then we were wondering, how did they get the canary in the coal mine? What did they do? Did they lower a cage with a canary in Speaker 2 (10:00) it? Speaker 4 (10:00) Oh, yeah, of course. And I can't remember what the real thing was. Speaker 2 (10:03) I think no one else would have started with farts. So it probably would have been a room full of farts and that you send a canary in there to check if the farts have cleared yet. After you've had your Brussels sprouts or something. Speaker 3 (10:16) Paul is so disgusted with you right now. I Speaker 4 (10:18) know that didn't happen. Speaker 2 (10:19) Yeah? You're Speaker 3 (10:19) not a fart guy, right? You're not a fart humorist. No. Speaker 4 (10:22) No, I wouldn't Speaker 3 (10:23) call myself that. Speaker 4 (10:25) You don't call Speaker 3 (10:26) yourself a fart humorist? Speaker 4 (10:27) I wouldn't be so hubristic as to lay claim to that title. When others do it so well. Yeah. Speaker 3 (10:34) There were actually too many of those guys going to Riyadh. That's why you missed out in the end. Speaker 4 (10:38) Yeah. That's right. There was a mandate. Yeah. We got too many. There was Speaker 3 (10:42) a Speaker 4 (10:42) special Speaker 2 (10:43) clause in the contract that said you could only fart this many times. Yeah. You're not allowed to fart this much. Speaker 4 (10:48) During your set or the whole time you're there? The whole time you're there. Wow. So you're Speaker 3 (10:52) imagining Speaker 2 (10:53) that Paul Speaker 3 (10:54) is a fart humorist at literally farts rather than just talks about farts. Speaker 2 (10:59) He does a joke about farts and then after the punchline... cocks her cheek and farts. That's like a little bit of punctuation at the end. It's an Speaker 4 (11:07) edit point. You Speaker 2 (11:09) just lift that all out. Speaker 2 (11:12) We're giving you Alex Horne's menu. Speaker 4 (11:14) Okay. Speaker 2 (11:16) He's a Speaker 4 (11:16) vegetarian, is that correct? Speaker 2 (11:17) No. Not at all. Speaker 3 (11:20) Why did I think that? He looks vegetarian. He does Speaker 4 (11:22) look vegetarian. He seems like a guy you'd go to a restaurant with and it would be a problem. Speaker 3 (11:27) Yeah. Well, that's true. That's true. But not because of any dietary needs. Is he a picky little boy? No. He's Speaker 2 (11:34) not a Speaker 3 (11:34) picky little boy. He's just trouble. He's just trouble. He's the sort of person who'd be eating your main course and suddenly he'd just reach over and grab a bit. Oh, no. And then Speaker 2 (11:44) he'd pop it in his mouth, I think. Oh, absolutely not. He's an alien, like when it comes to food. He's Speaker 3 (11:49) an alien. Speaker 2 (11:49) It's like he doesn't really understand the concept of... By Speaker 3 (11:52) the way, you left such a big gap between alien and when it comes to food there that it sounded like you were just going with... Speaker 2 (11:58) I thought this was a scoop. Yeah. It Speaker 3 (11:59) was an Speaker 2 (12:00) exclusive. He's an alien. Well, Speaker 3 (12:02) I Speaker 2 (12:02) don't think that would surprise anyone. That man was an alien. Speaker 3 (12:07) Absolutely not. See him Speaker 2 (12:08) try and talk to me. When he's on TV, that's him that is most charismatic. He's turning it on for the cameras. Off camera, so uphill. Would have a chat with that guy. I think it's because you two are too similar. You and Alex are on. No. Because Speaker 3 (12:22) out of everyone I know from comedy, Paul, Speaker 4 (12:25) and Speaker 3 (12:26) out of everyone you know from comedy, who would you point out as being the most likely to be an alien? Wow. Give you a little clue? You're looking at me. You know Sam Speaker 2 (12:37) Campbell? I Speaker 3 (12:38) think, Speaker 4 (12:38) I feel... Speaker 2 (12:38) Sam Speaker 3 (12:39) Campbell. Yeah, that's true. Sam Campbell. Speaker 4 (12:42) I feel like you're a little too combative to be an alien. Thank you. Yeah. Speaker 3 (12:47) Because aliens are famously friendly, aren't they? Speaker 4 (12:50) Well, I mean, if you're trying to... Have you seen Independence Day? Now, hold on a second. They're not trying to live like us on Earth. But Speaker 3 (12:58) they're combative. They just came Speaker 4 (12:59) to destroy things. That's Speaker 3 (13:00) pretty combative in my book. You're saying there's Speaker 4 (13:02) one kind of alien? Speaker 3 (13:03) No, I'm saying that... You're Speaker 4 (13:04) not Speaker 3 (13:04) familiar with the whites? With the greys? But the greys are combative, aren't they? As far as I'm concerned. They're just Speaker 4 (13:11) nosy. Speaker 3 (13:12) They're nosy, and most of them want you to take them to your dealer, from memory. Is that a thing in America? Take them to your dealer? Is Speaker 4 (13:20) that a thing in America? Speaker 3 (13:20) Did Speaker 4 (13:20) aliens say this? Speaker 3 (13:21) Yeah, it was a big poster over here in the 90s. And t-shirts. And t-shirts. So it'd be a big picture of a grey alien holding his finger up and it's like glowing like a spliff. And it says, take me to your dealer. Speaker 4 (13:34) Why would he need the dealer when he's already got... A built-in joint. Speaker 3 (13:42) That's fair enough, but you can ask him. Or Speaker 4 (13:44) is Speaker 3 (13:44) he looking to sell the finger? Maybe he's looking to sell the finger. Take me to your dealer and is he looking to buy... I have no experience in business. How much did Speaker 2 (13:50) I make from this? You seem to have a good thing going on this planet. Speaker 4 (13:55) Take me to your dealer. Speaker 2 (13:56) That's one of the great posters, I think. One of the great posters. It's iconic. When we were kids, Speaker 3 (14:01) that was huge. Take me to the dealer. Adi Hash was another good one. That would be like a flag, like the Adidas logo, but it's a weed leaf and it says Adi Hash. Speaker 4 (14:10) That sounds familiar. You Speaker 3 (14:11) must have seen Adi Hash. Speaker 4 (14:12) Are they still making things like that? Speaker 3 (14:14) They surely sell things like that at festivals still, I think. But I've not seen Take Me to Your Speaker 2 (14:20) Dealer in a long time. Needs to bring them back. Yeah. Take Me to Your Dealer. Or its own film. Speaker 4 (14:25) I beg your pardon? Speaker 2 (14:26) It should have like a film Speaker 3 (14:27) franchise. Based on the Speaker 4 (14:28) popular poster? Speaker 3 (14:29) Yeah. We've had like Barbie the movie, right? It's about time we started basing movies on Speaker 4 (14:34) posters. Based the thing on a book. Yeah. Speaker 2 (14:37) And maybe the Take Me To Your Dealer people would be like the bar, the Mattel people and be up for, you know, Speaker 4 (14:42) being Speaker 2 (14:42) criticized during it as well. Speaker 4 (14:45) That's right. Speaker 2 (14:46) Yeah. Lightly. Speaker 4 (14:47) That's right. Speaker 2 (14:47) Yeah. About the dangers of marijuana. Yeah. Be like, hey, I grew up with Take Me To Your Dealer and now. I'm stoned 24-7. Speaker 4 (14:56) Let's brainstorm this. So it would be an alien. I mean, it has to be an alien comes down to Earth. It's like an E.T. type story. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it Speaker 2 (15:02) lives on the planet where all the take-me-to-your-dealer aliens live. Speaker 2 (15:06) On this Speaker 3 (15:07) planet, it's full of aliens who are all looking for a dealer, but there isn't one there. Speaker 4 (15:12) I think it's a planet of dealers. Speaker 3 (15:15) And one alien. Speaker 4 (15:17) And one... Speaker 4 (15:20) No, they're alien Speaker 2 (15:21) dealers. Paul's saying all the aliens are drug dealers. You're saying that all the aliens are human. You're saying there's all human drug dealers on the planet. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's what you think it is. Speaker 3 (15:32) But then why would that guy then need to come here to find a Speaker 4 (15:34) dealer? There's two societies and they're split between dealers and dealer-wanters. Speaker 3 (15:41) Okay, yeah, yeah. Speaker 4 (15:42) Junkies. And so, well, are they? Or is it just the way their society is? And who are we to judge? Speaker 3 (15:47) Yeah. The film will explore that, I guess. Yes. And Speaker 4 (15:50) he comes to Earth, or she, and is lost because, like, how can I, I can't believe there's no dealers around. And because weed is now, they just sell it in stores and stuff, it's very confusing. He wants to go to a dark hole and find somebody. Find a dealer. Yeah, Speaker 3 (16:11) he needs to find a dealer. Well, then he needs to come to the UK. This needs to be UK-based, I think. Because we don't have the shops here. We're not selling it. I Speaker 4 (16:19) thought I saw one. Speaker 2 (16:20) No, you got done. Speaker 4 (16:21) It's got the green cross. Does that mean something else? Oh, Speaker 2 (16:24) that's just a regular pharmacy. It's Speaker 4 (16:25) a regular Speaker 2 (16:25) pharmacy. Whatever you bought. Boy, that's Speaker 4 (16:28) confusing. Speaker 2 (16:28) I feel sorry Speaker 4 (16:29) for people coming to America. Speaker 2 (16:31) What have you been smoking this whole trip? Some Paracetamol. Vicks Vaporub. I don't Speaker 4 (16:36) smoke anything, but I do eat gummies all day long. Yeah. Speaker 2 (16:40) So those were... With little laxative pills you'd be eating. I guess so. Speaker 4 (16:44) That would explain a great deal. Speaker 3 (16:45) That's a good bit for the film, isn't it? Oh, Speaker 4 (16:47) yeah. The alien Speaker 3 (16:48) accidentally eats laxatives. Poops everywhere. And you can do the fart for the voiceover. Speaker 4 (16:54) Ed? Speaker 4 (16:56) That's two. Speaker 3 (16:58) I didn't realize we were on Speaker 2 (16:59) a Speaker 3 (16:59) counter. Speaker 4 (17:01) You don't want to get to three. Because then you're going to... Speaker 3 (17:04) You'll Speaker 4 (17:05) find out. Speaker 3 (17:06) You know what I think you're going to do, but I can't mention it because then it'll be three. Speaker 2 (17:10) Yeah. Absolute catch-22. Catch-22. Speaker 4 (17:20) Lift up nicely. Speaker 2 (17:23) For your water course, you had still water. Yes. Alex Horne has gone a different way. What do you think Alex has done? And this is what you're going to do. Has he Speaker 4 (17:30) come up with a third thing? Speaker 2 (17:32) Yes. Speaker 2 (17:34) And this might be something you don't have in the US of A. I haven't seen it there. Speaker 4 (17:39) Another type of water? Speaker 2 (17:42) Is Speaker 4 (17:43) it not a water? Speaker 2 (17:44) I don't think, no. He's really bent the rules here. We've let him. Oh, he likes to do it. He likes to do it. Oh, it's okay when he does it. Sure. So Speaker 4 (17:53) stiller sparkling or is it like a cola of some sort? Speaker 2 (17:58) No, but you're right. It's just a completely different drink and it's like a, and it is just a brand name of something that he bought. Santa? Very close. Santa. Speaker 2 (18:09) Santa. Ganta? It's Speaker 3 (18:11) a Speaker 2 (18:11) tall glass of Santa. That's pretty close to Fanta. What would you say Ganta is? If you had to imagine what Gant is as a drink. I mean, Speaker 4 (18:17) obviously, it's Fanta laced with marijuana. Speaker 2 (18:20) Yeah. Speaker 4 (18:21) So it's a hybrid of Ganja and Fanta. Yeah. Which Speaker 3 (18:24) sounds fantastic. Speaker 4 (18:26) And Gantastic. We're having fun. I'm here with my friends, Teddy and Jim. Speaker 2 (18:37) Orangina.
