Speaker 1 (0:00) You're listening Speaker 2 (0:01) to a Mamma Mia podcast. Speaker 1 (0:08) Whoever said orange is the new pink was seriously disturbed. Speaker 3 (0:11) Morals for Speaker 1 (0:12) spring. Groundbreaking. Oh my Speaker 2 (0:14) gosh! Speaker 1 (0:15) You have to do it. You live for fashion. Speaker 2 (0:19) Hello and welcome to Nothing To Wear, the podcast that solves fashion problems and levels up your wardrobe. I'm Tamara Holland. I'm the fashion editor here at Mamma Mia. And I'm Lucinda Pickett, trend Speaker 3 (0:29) forecaster and content creator. Each week we talk all things fashion, helping you decide what is and isn't worth investing in. Hello, Tam. Hello, Speaker 2 (0:38) my friend. You have been away. I know. Speaker 3 (0:41) It's been a while since we've been on mic together. Speaker 2 (0:43) Yes, yes. And you've been in LA. LA. Oh my gosh. One of my favorite cities in the world. I love. I already can't wait to get back. Speaker 3 (0:51) Well, it's been a big few weeks in fashion, hasn't it? So there's so much to unpack on this episode. So I feel like we should jump right into it and maybe starting with the Emmys, which actually was on when I was in LA. Really? Which Speaker 2 (1:02) was Speaker 3 (1:02) pretty cool. Oh, that's fun. Yeah. Super cool. Speaker 2 (1:04) So the Emmys went down just over a week ago. The public sentiment has been that they were a little bit lacklustre, even boring. So, like, let's just get into why that might be. I'm going to be honest with you. When the Emmys were actually happening, I was like... on death's door lying in bed with the flu after my toddler had the flu. Usually I recap. I'm like glued to my phone looking at the looks as they come through, refreshing Getty like, you know, like crazy. I Speaker 3 (1:29) was Speaker 2 (1:29) waiting for your Instagram recaps. Doing a recap. I know it was just like dead air on my Instagram because I did not have like the human capacity to post anything, which was really disappointing for me. So I'm glad that we're taking a minute to actually talk about it here. And I was like, I'll save it for the show. I'll save it for the show. I Speaker 3 (1:47) said Speaker 2 (1:47) nothing. Yeah, it's Speaker 3 (1:48) been Speaker 2 (1:48) about a Speaker 3 (1:48) week. Speaker 2 (1:48) It's nice to just Speaker 3 (1:49) debrief and like talk about, I guess, even just red carpet dressing and shows and awards in general. It's Speaker 2 (1:55) given me a minute to think actually and kind of forced me to take a breath, take a back seat and go, hmm, what was the, like catch the vibe a little bit. And I have to say I don't think I would have been doing that kind of breathless coverage anyway had I felt well on the day because I felt it was quite lacklustre. this year. Do you agree? Absolutely. I was waiting Speaker 3 (2:17) for the moments to sort of pop through, whether it be through content on Instagram or TikTok, but there was no sort of standout moments, but I was incredibly underwhelmed. Yeah. Speaker 2 (2:27) Underwhelmed is, yeah. And Speaker 3 (2:29) I Speaker 2 (2:29) had to take Speaker 3 (2:29) a minute as well and think, well, hang on, it's the Emmys. This isn't the Met Gala, the Golden Globes. Like the dress code is black tie. It's not as performative as other shows and awards. So I thought, is that the reason why I'm not as wowed by these dresses and what people are wearing? But even so being black tie, I was still very just like lacklustre about all the different looks. Besides Zendaya. Speaker 2 (2:52) She's really the only one that kind of. shone and really brought her A-game. Hey, do you know, I do think in recent years, though, the Emmys has been on par almost with the Oscars and the Globes because of the sort of place that like prestige TV has taken in the culture now, especially since COVID. It's kind of been the era of streaming in the era of TV. Right. And as a part of that. TV celebrities and TV shows people have been saying for years now have become the new movies, right? And I think we've had a couple of years of that and now we're starting to see sort of that. back and pivot back to movies having priority again. I do think we're about to see a big boom for movies again. You know, we've got The Odyssey that's just come out. We've got Dune. These are all Zendaya movies. Is this a coincidence? I don't know. Variety is coming out soon. We've got lots of big blockbusters. Everyone's talking about the movies and movie stars again. And what I thought was really lacking on this red carpet was that kind of star power. This isn't to say that the amazing and formidable television actors that were there and representing and screen actors that do TV weren't amazing. But I also think, I don't know, maybe it's me. I'm not a big streaming person. Like I do prefer going to the movies and watching movies to TV. I'm not really like across all the new shows. There's like. Go and watch The Spill. They'll debrief all the key shows. But I do feel like it's almost becoming a little bit siloed. I would say like if you're not watching, I know Widows Bay was the big show from the Emmys that won all the awards, right? I haven't seen that show. I don't know any of the stars in it. I'm not like. passionate about that program. I don't watch The Pit, so I don't know any of those people. So I'm like, who are these? I'm sure these people are very important to the people who watch these programs, but I don't know who these people are. So they're not resonating with me on the red carpet. Exactly my Speaker 3 (4:47) sentiment around it as well. Like Zendaya Nicole Kidman, everyone else, I was... very unfamiliar with. And like you were saying, I think it's also just oversaturation of all these shows on streaming and all the different options. There's so many shows to choose. I wasn't familiar with the shows that were winning these awards. And every Speaker 2 (5:04) year it's a new cult show that comes through and a new cult cast. And then the next year they're replaced with another one. So you don't have time to get to know them. Whereas with movies, I would say, you know, someone like an Emma Stone or a Jennifer Lawrence and an Anne Hathaway and Zendaya, like these stars that, you know, they're doing in interesting projects over and over again and you're seeing them in all these different iterations and forms and that's why they're so exciting to see on a red carpet through all their different evolutions, whereas these TV stars, they're amazing but they kind of come one year and they're gone the next because they're not nominated for anything. Exactly right. I Speaker 3 (5:37) wasn't interested at all in the awards with the Emmys this year because I just didn't know the shows. Did you watch the...? No, no. And that's another point. I sometimes wonder like not just the relevancy of these shows award nights anymore, but the viral moments I wasn't seeing on TikTok or online. And I was wondering, like, there wasn't a glam bot. There wasn't any of that that picks up a lot of that content where you can see these stars. That's true. Speaker 2 (6:02) Can we talk about one moment, though, that did go viral? Yeah. Shailene Woodley's look. Yes, let's discuss. Okay. So she, Shailene Woodley, absolutely gorgeous, very, very talented actress of her generation. I think she's amazing. Her stylist is Carla Welch and she was wearing a couture look from Balenciaga by Pierpaolo Piccioli. Yeah. And on the runway this was a pretty amazing look. Yeah. Perhaps it just didn't translate. the way that they had intended on the red carpet or at least the commentary around the look. I mean, I've got to say when I first saw it, I was like, huh, like it scratched a little itch in me where I was like, well, at least it's interesting. Well, should we Speaker 3 (6:44) describe the look? Yeah, yeah. Why don't Speaker 2 (6:46) you Speaker 3 (6:46) describe it? Yeah. Full Balenciaga. And you're right, it was straight off the runway. I think it was Resort 27. With a few Speaker 2 (6:52) additions. And it looked Speaker 3 (6:53) incredible on the runway. Yeah. Immaculate. So it's these sequined wide Speaker 2 (6:57) leg pants. Almost like jeans. Jeans. Trousers. Yeah. Speaker 3 (7:01) Sequined gold with a navy. Speaker 2 (7:05) Not navy. What color is Speaker 3 (7:06) the top? It Speaker 2 (7:06) was like a bright. Blue, almost Speaker 3 (7:09) cobalt blue. Cobalt blue top, very low plunging. Yes. U-neck low plunging top with some burgundy gloves, a very like 2010 necklace. It Speaker 2 (7:20) was like a big gemstone necklace. Yeah, gemstone necklace. And her hair was over her ears in a very sort of. Slicked Speaker 3 (7:26) back, Speaker 2 (7:26) low pony. Yes, Speaker 3 (7:27) slicked Speaker 2 (7:27) back, yes. A lot of look. Speaker 3 (7:29) When it was on the runway, it was so striking and they actually had it paired with that cape, the long cape. So the model had the cape over the head and this sort of trailed cape. I almost wish she wore the cape on the runway. Speaker 2 (7:42) With the gloves and the necklace. Not the gloves. I think that Speaker 3 (7:44) Carla Welch was trying to like. Instead of the cape, have the gloves. And Carla's like a renowned stylist. She's done some incredible looks in the past. She does a lot with the Met Gala. Do you know who she did? Sarah. Sarah Paulson. Paulson. You know the look on the Met Gala with the dollar bill over her eyes? The Speaker 2 (8:01) matière for Carla. Speaker 3 (8:02) That was her. Yes. Speaker 2 (8:03) She also looks after Hannah Einbinder, who was nominated this year for Hacks, who I actually, I love. She styled Hannah this year in a look that had just been on the Calvin Klein runway, like literally days. That's cool. Yeah, a two-piece black look, which I loved. So Carla is historically an incredible stylist. Do you know she actually trolled herself about this Shailene Woodley Speaker 3 (8:26) look? Speaker 2 (8:27) She posted just a couple of days ago, she posted on her Instagram feed just a black screen that said trigger warning and you were like, oh, and then you scroll across trigger warning and it's just the photo of Shailene in the outfit. I just like full credit to her for making fun of herself and the commentary around the look, yeah. Speaker 3 (8:46) Public perception, everyone hated this look and they're saying, oh, Shailene Silas must have hated her and, like, you know, did her dirty. I just think the look wasn't right for Shailene. But Speaker 2 (8:56) then she changed for the after party into a T-shirt, into a black vintage T-shirt but kept the neck. It was odd. Speaker 3 (9:03) And then I heard whispers that it was all a bit of rage baiting and they were trying to get people to talk about the outfit. I don't think that's true because Carla's also come out and said, guys. Have an opinion, but you don't have to be so nasty online to Shailene. Like Speaker 2 (9:15) it is a bit aggressive, Speaker 3 (9:17) isn't it? I Speaker 2 (9:18) like that she took a risk. That's kind of something I like about Shailene's style in general. She's never predictable. She's absolutely stunt, like model beautiful. She can wear anything. So it's interesting that she took a risk. And of all the looks on the red carpet, this one is the most interesting to talk about. So I don't think that's a bad thing. That's true. I would probably just have removed the necklace, to be honest. Yeah, necklace. Speaker 3 (9:40) Yeah. Remove the necklace and the gloves and maybe wear the cape. That would have been my thing. Another interesting thing looking back at why it wasn't so wow this year in terms of the dressing, a lot was just straight off the runway. There wasn't a lot of custom dresses. Speaker 2 (9:56) Like we're seeing now. Yeah. I Speaker 3 (9:58) wonder what that is. Like maybe brands don't see the importance in the Emmys. Like what's going on there? Like a lot of it is just pulled straight from the runway, a lot of the dresses. The only kind of custom, even Zendaya's, well, that's a little bit different. That was a vintage 2010 Prada. Nicole Kidman was in custom. But I feel like everyone else was just off. I Speaker
