We were at a bar pregame, and I said, we need Michigan to win this because I've watched college football long enough to know that a team that looked like trash in week one that everybody says sucks is going to upset somebody, and I would prefer it to be Michigan than Georgia Tech. Speaker 5 (10:45) No, this was a tough game for him. But Bryce Speaker 3 (10:48) Underwood, people say everything about Bryce Underwood that they probably otherwise would say about John Mateer. Speaker 5 (10:53) I think it's valid that Bryce Underwood is still a very young player. Obviously, the whole NIL thing and the amount of money that these guys are getting paid, it makes it, I think, easier and more valid to criticize an 18-year-old or a 19-year-old. But still, at the same time, like... He's got room to grow. He did lose to Speaker 3 (11:17) Western Michigan. Couldn't Speaker 5 (11:18) move the ball against Western Michigan. He Speaker 3 (11:19) did Speaker 5 (11:19) lose to Western Michigan, but I think to say that somebody at the age of 18 is going to be, you can determine whether or not they're going to be a good quarterback. Speaker 3 (11:27) I don't think that's necessarily always the case. I agree with that. Guys are allowed to get better, but first time we saw him, didn't look like he'd gotten much better. Did Speaker 5 (11:36) not over the course of the offseason. Speaker 3 (11:38) And then he didn't light it up against Oklahoma either. Now, the Speaker 6 (11:44) take I agree with college football conservatives would be like, you know. Speaker 6 (11:56) I agree, of course, they should get paid. And of course, if you're getting paid, you should have critique. But sometimes that pay scale can lend itself to probably unnecessary critique, but we forget, like, no, they're not amateurs who are going to get paid, but that is the developmental stage of football. Like, cats can get good in one or two years, see how games play, you know? So you got to give them a little grace in college. Speaker 5 (12:22) Yeah. Who's the... Best case of a quarterback that stunk when they started in college that got really good by the end. Speaker 3 (12:31) Arch wasn't great to start last year and finished very strong. He Speaker 5 (12:37) didn't look great to start on Saturday night either. And then by the end. Speaker 3 (12:42) Well, to be fair, he had what should have been a 60-yard completion to Cam Coleman at the beginning of the game that Cam Coleman juggled and put right into the hands of a defender. They had some bad breaks, but yeah, he didn't look awesome, but they had an incredible comeback. And yeah, guys are allowed to get better. It just doesn't seem that Bryce is maybe on that path. Speaker 5 (13:04) Yeah, I would agree that. You have to see some tremendous improvement from him over the next few weeks to really think that the... It's kind of, on one hand, not fair, given how... how much football he has played because it's not a lot and just because you know he got paid millions of dollars it's like i do feel like a lot of these kids are going to get bailed on early Speaker 3 (13:30) I think people would be critiquing one of the highest rated recruits ever given his performance, regardless of how much money he was making. Speaker 6 (13:39) I Speaker 3 (13:39) think Speaker 6 (13:40) that's it. That's the thing. And I think that's the folly in this entire system is those fucking high school rankings. What is your metric for ranking a cat that's playing in Florida versus a cat that's playing in Utah in high school, at the high school level? What is your metric? What are you looking for? Rankings in general. are ridiculous at that level. Because what you're doing is you're watching film. But you're watching, there's so many different variables, so there's no baseline metric in high school. It makes no sense to rank kids like that. I've always kind of been against rankings. It's stupid. I guess, I was going to say, the Speaker 5 (14:17) top positions, the top players at their positions, they do a bunch of camps together and stuff. So I think that's what a lot of people look at when they get together. How do you perform against... some of the other good players that are your same grade. But yeah, there's going to be a lot of people that fall Speaker 6 (14:32) through the cracks, for sure. Yeah, which is the ranking system at that level to me is pointless because they're just kids and they have no real coaching. I mean, some of them could have had, right? But at the collegiate level and surely not the professional level. So it's a pointless system that just is more for websites to do well, like Rivals and shit like that. Speaker 3 (14:55) Yeah, they are pretty predictive, though. They do. Speaker 5 (14:58) I Speaker 3 (14:58) think. I mean, yeah, there are five stars who suck. There are three stars who are incredible. But on the whole. Like, most of the five stars every year get drafted. A lot more get drafted in the first round than you would anticipate from that few players. I Speaker 5 (15:15) think if you get the five-star system, the people that end up getting five stars coming out of high school, they're usually, like, they've been evaluated heavily. So there's a lot of tape out there on them. There's a lot of people that have looked at their play. And so they usually, like, there are some busts at five stars, but... They usually get a lot of those correct. But it's more about the ones that slip through the cracks. Speaker 6 (15:38) That would have been a five Speaker 5 (15:40) -star if they'd been evaluated. Speaker 6 (15:42) It's pointless because to call a high school kid a bust is fucking bananas, dog. He has not played any real competition yet. High school level, top level ball is not a real competition. The next level is. But to call him a bust just means you had all these expectations. That's you. You have them expectations. I'm against the high school ranking systems. Yeah, it is kind of weird. It's very weird. I mean, I think some of the NFL pro scouting, like them kind of things, they be off too. So it's just too many variables to measure to rank kids like that. But at the professional level, that's what you sign up for. But high school kids, like, no, man, it's too much going on. Speaker 5 (16:23) Yeah. I actually have a question for you about NFL scouting. Joe Speaker 6 (16:27) Burrow, to answer your question. Yep, Joe Burrow. He was somebody who was eh at the beginning, but then turned out to be great. Yep. Yeah, it's true. Speaker 5 (16:35) Ohio State just wasn't enough room for him. I have a question for you about NFL scouting. If you are, like you've sat in a lot of install meetings, you've listened to the game plans so many times. Have you ever been in a meeting where your offensive coordinator or head coach is like, we're going to hunt this guy, this cornerback, or this defensive back, like that's the weak link and we're going after him? Oh, yeah. It happens a lot? Oh, yeah. And has it ever? backfired or if they identify a guy they're going to keep going at him until he fucks up Speaker 6 (17:14) Well, you play off like so like like your strength is the offense versus their strength as a defense or them so they're weak their weakness in defense like if they have a corner that's coming off of Or coming back from an injury or we know he's hurt or something like that. Like yeah, you want to exploit that Or test it they'll test it early like they'll do that, right? And that's that coaches do that though. They do what they call like the first 15. Yeah, first 15, but the script of plays, those script plays. And they'll deviate off of it if things happen. But for the most part, our first 15 plays are our first 15 plays. This is what we're running. Speaker 5 (17:49) Yeah. Speaker 6 (17:50) And it's kind of testing those kind of things. Is this dude still hurt? Can he hold this up? Or the exploiting of when I line up like this, they have to line up like this. So it's the little chess game, the game within the game. But yeah, you absolutely, yeah, you go after dudes. Like, and individually, right? So, like, you have, like, a game plan as an offense, but then you watch film with your individual group, right? And you see exploits. So, like, a good example of this is we played Georgia. Speaker 6 (18:27) my junior year. And it's when we whooped him and the whole, everybody was like, yo, George, and this is, this was George's like when Matthew Stafford was there, no Sean Marino, like they were supposed to win this game, but we knew watching film. We was like, yeah, we're going to get them. And we're going to shock the world. Cause like we just knew. And so one of the things was I was watching the safety. I forget what his name is, but I was watching the safety and I was watching man film on him. And I noticed every time a running back got in the open field and he was in the middle, like inside the box. he goes straight to, like he dive at your legs. I was like, if I see him in the hole one-on-one, I'm going to score. And exactly what happened. It was one of the first drives. We ran a little down and around scheme. I went in, I saw him one-on-one, knew he was diving to my legs. So I gave him a little left jab, spun, score. So shit like that. That's the fun little nuances of the game. I think we don't get to see, but it's like, yeah, that's what you do. When you watch film, you're looking for weaknesses. Absolutely. Interesting. Speaker 6 (19:26) Were there Speaker 5 (19:27) any, like when it came to you in the running game, if they were to pick somebody out that they go after, was it more often than not a D lineman or a linebacker? Speaker 6 (19:38) What do you mean? Like what we're going to go after? Yeah. Like it's all contingent. Like if we felt like somebody was sweet on a D-line, like we would run towards their side. Or if there's a linebacker who was like a little slower or felt like couldn't hold up. But as you grow, like college, it's a little more like vanilla. And then the pros, those weaknesses get less and less because they're Speaker 5 (20:05) pros. Because everybody's pretty good. Everybody's pretty good. Yeah. But Speaker 6 (20:08) again, like, so what happens throughout the season, like week one is the best your team going to be like athletically. What happens over the course of the season is injuries happen. And so by week 16, you playing with guys that you brought up the street and a lot of guys, you know what I'm saying? They're NFL caliber players, but they probably wouldn't make an NFL roster or they're bubble guys. But now they're playing key roles because a lot of your guys are hurt. Speaker 5 (20:32) Yeah. Speaker 6 (20:32) And so that's when you start exploring shit Speaker 5 (20:34) like that. That's when the depth becomes an issue and some teams aren't as deep as others.
