Speaker 2 (0:01) Brushing your teeth is all well and good until you can't find a sink to spit your toothpaste in. No sink, no spit. And you've got to spit, right? Otherwise, then what are you supposed to do? Walk around with a mouthful of toothpaste? Well, that's the title of today's story. A Mouthful of Toothpaste. Let's get into it. Speaker 2 (0:38) This is the story of needing to spit out your toothpaste in the sink, but not being able to spit out your toothpaste in the sink because somebody else is busy spitting out their toothpaste in the sink. Cosley found himself in this situation quite often, and for no other reason than there were just too many people in his house and not nearly enough sinks. I don't Speaker 1 (0:57) get it, he Speaker 2 (0:58) would say. Why Speaker 1 (0:59) couldn't we have built a house that has one sink for every person that lives here? Was that too much to ask? Speaker 2 (1:05) Apparently, it was too much to ask. Speaker 1 (1:08) Cosley, have you ever stopped to think how many sinks that would be? Cosley Speaker 2 (1:13) didn't care to stop and think about such things. All he knew was that there were a lot of people in his house. There was Mom, and Dad, and Brooks, and Lola, and Jace, and Lily, and Gemma, and Honey, and those were just the people he knew about. Who knew how many other brothers and sisters he just hadn't run into yet? Speaker 1 (1:33) There's enough things for everyone if we all take turns, and you kids are so good at taking turns. Speaker 2 (1:40) Cosley had a feeling his mother didn't have a clue what the word good actually meant. His younger sister Honey thought taking turns only applied to the older kids. Usually she would jump in front of Cosley and say, Me first! Then if Cosley even considered doing something about it, Honey would flash her teeth like some kind of vicious wolf child. Speaker 1 (2:01) Listen here, bub. I may be little, but I'm not afraid to use these teeth to go after anyone who tries to move me out of line. Speaker 2 (2:08) Mom, Cosley would have to say, Honey's doing that thing where she starts acting like a little vampire. One time while having a sleepover at his best friend Rishan's house, Cosley nearly blew a gasket when he entered his friend's bathroom. Speaker 1 (2:23) A double sink? Your bathroom has a double sink? Speaker 2 (2:27) But Rashaan, you don't even have any brothers or sisters. It's just you. And your parents have their own bathroom and sink attached to their bedroom. Well, you know, said Rashaan, sometimes I might wash my hands in this sink, but use the other sink to rinse my sandbox toys. Rashaan, you don't have a sandbox. Well, if I ever get one, that's what I'll use the second sink for. But as much as Cosley didn't like waiting for his brothers and sisters to finish using the sink, it wasn't like he ever had to leave the house to go searching for one. Well, until one day, Cosley had just finished eating some really sticky candy. The tough, chewy kind of candy that gets impossibly stuck in the deepest pits of your teeth. The kind of candy that sends your tongue into a full-blown frenzy as it desperately tries to remove the candy. Part of the trouble was that Brooks, Lola, Jace, Lily, Gemma, and Honey had also been eating the candy. Speaker 1 (3:25) All right, kids, everyone upstairs at the exact same time to brush your teeth. No, Mom, Speaker 2 (3:31) pleaded Cosley. Not Speaker 1 (3:33) all of us at the same time. Why do we always have to brush our teeth at the same time? Speaker 2 (3:39) Cosley's mother just gave her usual spiel. Speaker 1 (3:42) If someone else is using the sink in the kids' bathroom when you need to use it, you can either wait or find another sink somewhere else in the house. We have more than one sink, you know. Just don't use the guest bathroom or the bathroom I just cleaned. Speaker 2 (3:55) Cosley was well aware there were other sinks in the house, but who wants to go running around the house with a mouthful of toothpaste? After brushing his teeth for the dentist-recommended two minutes, Cosley's tongue reported unhappily that there was still some candy stuck in his teeth. So Cosley kept brushing for another two minutes, and then another two minutes, and then another two minutes. That sticky candy was really sticky. When he went to spit out his toothpaste, there were five other kids waiting behind Honey, who was first in line to use the sink. Honey, of course, had worked her way to the front by threatening vampire action. Speaker 1 (4:30) Oh, man, I'm the last one in line? Speaker 2 (4:33) Is what Cosley had tried to say, but because his mouth was so full of toothpaste, it sounded more like... Speaker 2 (4:43) If there was ever a time to take his mother's advice, it was now. With his mouth on the verge of an overflow, Cosley decided to go find another sink. Brooks saw him leaving and said, I know what you're about to do, Cosley, but I'm going to do it first. Brooks pushed Cosley out of the way and started running toward the next bathroom. Lola got out of line next and said, I Speaker 1 (5:05) saw what you just did to Cosley, Brooks, and I'm going to do it too. Speaker 2 (5:10) But instead of pushing
