Speaker 1 (0:00) I.V.M. Speaker 4 (0:33) And so I thought, because he's such a prolific writer and he has such interesting critiques of films, Speaker 5 (0:38) that Speaker 4 (0:38) we pick a topic that would be at odds with that. So we're going today with Speaker 6 (0:43) top Speaker 4 (0:43) five guilty pleasure films. Speaker 6 (0:46) Which Speaker 4 (0:47) that's a weird, I don't know, like we discussed this before also. I don't know how to discuss guilty pleasure. I feel no guilt. for the pleasure this was Speaker 6 (0:54) literally my life i was going to say it i Speaker 4 (0:57) think all three of us thought okay we all thought of the joke whatever i just i'm introducing it so i'm going to say all the words so copy Speaker 6 (1:04) paste i'm not saying anything weird theme Speaker 4 (1:06) in the films that i picked a lot of stealing happening a lot of copying a lot of lifting from other even if it happened i'm in denial and Speaker 6 (1:13) uh we have i think spoken about it before also we have pro-plagiarism. I'm Speaker 4 (1:17) very pro- I think if you copy well. If it's done well. If it's, yeah. Shout out to you, Preetam. I'm a big fan. Like, I am. I think his music's good. I think- Moetsuri. Yeah. I think it works well. Okay. Yeah. We will- This is- We have to take a break, right? This is the thing. We have to take a break now? Because, no, we introduce it, then Cyrus comes in. I Speaker 6 (1:36) think this time Gopal Dutt will come. Speaker 4 (1:38) Oh, yeah. Gopal. Sorry. Speaker 4 (4:28) Okay, we are back. I said we are back. No, but I'm giving them a point. Speaker 6 (4:32) Karan, you're being very manly in this episode. It's a little concerning to me, but it's fine. Speaker 4 (4:36) Let's see if your pics reflect. Oh, no. Okay, Speaker 6 (4:39) what order are we going in? Speaker 4 (4:41) Okay, so we should let the... I think the host can... The host, the guest. I gave Mary the host. The guest can start. So Speaker 6 (4:47) we will do, just so that the order is clear, because there will be 15 movies, basically. Yeah, we will have to be a little... Yeah, and special mentions also, because... Oh, I have none. I have. Okay. So Rahul will start with the number one, then Karan, then me, then Rahul, then Karan. Okay. Cool. Sounds good. Okay. Speaker 5 (5:03) So my number one, it's crazy that I have to look at it. But, so this is a movie I mentioned in at least 70 % of my reviews. Somehow I always come back to this. It's Aap Mujhe Achche Tagne Lagya. Dude. Incredible. You're a man of Speaker 6 (5:16) culture. Wow. Yeah. Speaker 5 (5:18) Good Gujarat represent. It's sort of seared into my mind ever since I watched it. And it's, you know, it's Vikram Bhatt. And it was right on the back of Kauna Paris. So these two were like hot property. So even I went with that. I was like, what, 15 or something. I went with Great Hopes. And the film was, like, I was too young to Speaker 6 (5:36) know. Speaker 5 (5:36) It's Speaker 6 (5:36) such Speaker 5 (5:36) a funny visual Speaker 6 (5:36) of 15 Speaker 5 (5:37) -year-old. Yeah, Speaker 6 (5:38) yeah. Speaker 5 (5:38) It was like Hrithik and Amisha back in one year or one and a half years. I was like, I went and I was like. I knew subconsciously the film is bad, but then I was like, so was Kaho Na Pyare. That was a big hit. It was fine. Speaker 4 (5:51) Exactly. Let's keep the attacks related. That's going to be the clip, by the way. Immediately they're going Speaker 5 (5:56) to Speaker 4 (5:56) be like, he hates Kaho Na Pyare. I made it Speaker 5 (5:57) very obvious. It's okay. They can't troll me anymore. It's done. Anyways, Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage. Amisha's... Asthma. Condition. Oh my God. Whatever it is. Speaker 6 (6:10) It's gorgeous. As a kid, Speaker 5 (6:12) I thought that was great acting. Speaker 6 (6:13) yeah same I Speaker 5 (6:14) still think I don't Speaker 6 (6:16) know Speaker 5 (6:16) if I still Speaker 6 (6:16) think it but Speaker 5 (6:17) then if I do it's guilty pleasure that's not pleasure even though she is supposed to express pleasure yeah so that's a good pick wow no no that film I still watch from time to time nice and I've written about it also shamelessly and while writing about it I'm like I don't know if I'm like actually praising it, selling it to people. I loved characters in it. Like Kiran Kumar was one of my OG villains in that. Always. And there was Navratri in 9 Days and I'm from Gujarat. So for me, it was really close to home. But like 9 Days, you can fall in love. And I knew it was like a really horny festival. Speaker 6 (6:51) Yeah. I know. Yeah. No, genuinely, even in Bombay. Speaker 5 (6:54) And Speaker 6 (6:54) I Speaker 5 (6:54) like how romantic they meet in Navratri. Like Roma and Juliet in the car park and shit. But... Yeah, I'm still obsessed with that film and Hrithik was in his bad acting era. It went on for 10 years. Speaker 4 (7:04) But... He was in that bad run. Bad run after his first film or two. He Speaker 5 (7:10) did one or two critically acclaimed films. Fiza, Mission, Kajme. And then he went on this absolutely generational streak. And he is there all across all lists. This list could be only him at this point. But relatively, he was good in this. Relatively, he was good. Relatively? Is this the Speaker 6 (7:30) movie where he started his face vibration? Yeah, yeah. Speaker 5 (7:33) Oh my God. His neck is bleeding. Bleeding and injured. Correct. Then I thought that's his thing. Yeah. It became his thing. It became his thing. Yeah, yeah. And then, I am crazy about love. And he went to, he took it to another level. Speaker 4 (7:47) That's a different, I will say, I get what you're saying because the next phase of this is crazier. It's crazier, Speaker 5 (7:51) right? Like Speaker 4 (7:51) when he does, you will Speaker 3 (7:52) be my Speaker 4 (7:52) friend and I am crazy about love. Those films, he really hams it up to a different degree. Yeah, so this is a class. This is the beginning Speaker 5 (8:00) of, yeah. They had this background score in it when they meet. I was obsessed with it as a kid. I couldn't find it. Obviously, later I found out it was a plagiarized, which is great. Speaker 6 (8:08) Great, we love Speaker 5 (8:09) plagiarism. Speaker 6 (8:10) I mean, Speaker 5 (8:10) I, whole of 90s was like that. So I was like, Speaker 6 (8:12) yeah, sure. But I didn't see Amisha Patel again for a long time after that. Because she started dating Vikram Bhatt after that. Oh Speaker 5 (8:17) yeah, she did date Vikram Bhatt. And he kind of like made him cut Speaker 6 (8:20) away. Speaker 5 (8:20) I Speaker 6 (8:20) mean, Speaker 5 (8:20) I like to tag the Russians and the Buds for my list because Hrithik, this is not his only pick in this. Oh my God. Oh man. Speaker 4 (8:27) I Speaker 6 (8:27) have a recurring Speaker 4 (8:28) actor on mine as well. But yeah, not Hrithik. It always happens. Speaker 6 (8:31) I do not. Because again, I'm very proud of my list. Speaker 4 (8:34) But that's such a great pick because I think also what I remember of that movie is that they just ran back some of the Kahu Na Pyara stuff. Like, isn't it just like he's again, it's like poor boy, rich girl, similar tropes. Her thing is that she can't leave the house. She's a cage sparrow. Yeah, exactly. She's a cage sparrow and he's... Translation. Speaker 6 (8:51) It would be more fun if she actually transformed into one randomly. Great soundtrack. I was going to say that. That for Speaker 5 (8:59) me... Rajesh Hoshan copied but like great soundtrack. He was Speaker 4 (9:02) unbelievable at copying, man. He was prolific. Before Preetam. One of the best. Before Speaker 6 (9:07) Anu Malik also. Yeah, true. Yeah, he walked so that all of them can fly actually. Oh yeah, before Anu. Before Anu. Rajesh, when did you Speaker 4 (9:14) start Speaker 6 (9:14) giving music? That's Speaker 4 (9:15) how Speaker 6 (9:15) I Speaker 5 (9:15) remember. Speaker 4 (9:16) I Speaker 5 (9:16) had a Goa trip with my college friends back then. It was after 12th. And there were like couple of Loveland guys on the trip who were only listening to Aap Mujhe Achhe Lagoon. It's like his songs. Ritik was heartbroken for most of them. And they started like doing his dance moves, which he didn't have much of in this film. But Speaker 6 (9:32) they Speaker 5 (9:33) were inspired. It's Speaker 6 (9:34) that Garba song he's Speaker 4 (9:35) dancing in her town. And then Speaker 5 (9:36) there's this one where he sings at her engagement only. He's part of a band, right? he pretends to be part of the film. The nuances. Speaker 4 (9:44) Sorry, sorry. Speaker 5 (9:44) Please, Karan, stop it. He's Speaker 6 (9:46) an Speaker 5 (9:46) undercover band. He's an undercover Speaker 4 (9:47) band. Speaker 5 (9:47) He's an undercover Speaker 6 (9:47) band. He's an Speaker 5 (9:47) undercover band. Speaker 6 (9:48) He's an undercover band. He's an undercover band. He's an undercover band. Speaker 5 (9:48) He's Speaker 6 (9:49) an undercover band. Speaker 5 (9:49) He's Speaker 6 (9:49) an Speaker 5 (9:49) undercover Speaker 6 (9:49) band. Speaker 5 (9:50) He's Speaker 6 (9:50) an undercover band. Speaker 5 (9:50) He's an undercover band. He's an undercover band. He's an undercover band. He's an undercover band. He's Speaker 6 (9:54) an undercover band. Speaker 5 (9:54) He's Speaker 6 (9:54) an undercover band. Speaker 5 (9:54) He's an undercover band. Speaker 6 (9:55) He's an undercover band. Speaker 5 (9:55) He's Speaker 6 (9:55) an Speaker 5 (9:55) undercover band. He's an undercover band. He's Speaker 4 (9:58) an Speaker 5 (9:58) undercover Speaker 4 (9:59) band. He's an undercover band. He's an undercover band. He's an undercover band. He's an Speaker 5 (9:59) undercover band. He's Speaker 4 (9:59) an Speaker 5 (9:59) undercover band. He's Speaker 4 (10:00) an Speaker 5 (10:00) undercover band. He's an undercover Speaker 6 (10:01) band. He's an undercover band. Speaker 5 (10:03) He's Speaker 4 (10:03) an Speaker 5 (10:03) undercover band. He's an undercover band. He's an undercover band. Speaker 4 (10:09) He's an undercover band. I know Speaker 5 (10:11) He like a really traditional reader from like a new one when they're like there it is again. Speaker 4 (10:21) There it is, I'm just leaving Easter eggs this time. Nice, nice. Speaker 5 (10:24) This is Raul's Speaker 4 (10:25) Kalo Nao. Like how we reference Kalo Nao on the podcast. No, you, bro, you. Yeah, me. It's pretty much Speaker 5 (10:31) the same film. Yeah, it's the same Speaker 4 (10:32) movie. Speaker 6 (10:33) Honestly, same. And the only, my biggest memory of Aap Mujhe Achche Lage is the title track because it goes like, it's so, like that. And I love that. It's so like, Speaker 4 (10:44) the hook. Is there a happy side version? Aap Mujhe Achche Lage? it should there is there has to be Rajesh always brings the happy side there is a Speaker 5 (10:52) happy side of pretty much all the songs on the track I'm sure Speaker 6 (10:55) that's unbelievable Rajesh our dear friend Rajesh okay that's such Speaker 4 (10:59) a good pick I love him gorgeous pick love Speaker 6 (11:01) it Speaker 4 (11:01) okay Speaker 6 (11:01) okay Speaker 4 (11:02) mine is so this is the actor that's recurring on my list he comes up again later but Akshay Kumar in the 90s was he was khiladi you know before he was like the comedy expert that he became and like the prolific comedic actor he was also this action hero yeah Speaker 6 (11:21) and Speaker 4 (11:21) part of that was the khiladi series absolutely and my favorite of the khiladi series is khiladi It's very interesting that they did this crossover where Rekha, and this is a sentence I love saying, Rekha is managing The Undertaker and Gulshan Grover and is managing this wrestler called The Crush. Yeah, The Crush. And they fight. And the thing about wrestling is obviously, sorry for spoilers about wrestling, but it's fake. It's not real. Nobody knew that. But the way that they talk about it. it in the movie is like it's real like it's this illegal spot where people die and then Rekha's like Undertaker is very dangerous and it's Speaker 6 (12:09) not even the real Undertaker right they cast like a lookalike of Undertaker but their entire PR was that we've gotten real Undertaker for this movie because so in in 95 Speaker 4 (12:20) they were doing this wrestling storyline where there was an Undertaker versus the fake Undertaker where the fake Undertaker had taken a spot like Undertaker managed all of that stuff before Kane so the guy yeah so that guy Speaker 4 (12:50) What Speaker 6 (12:51) are they doing in the mud? Speaker 4 (12:59) Nine and a half days or weeks? Weeks, weeks. Where basically he pours chocolate on his hand and she like eats from it. Okay, but see, the scene in nine Speaker 6 (13:08) and a half weeks or days, you're unconfirmed. They're trying to make food erotic and stuff. Okay, cool. Here, in this one, he's like, it's very strange to watch because they've literally copied it but they've made it gross. They've made it just gross. Like, he's feeding her cheese. No, no, he's holding... I watched it this morning Speaker 4 (13:27) which was an insane choice. Like Speaker 6 (13:29) a slice of cheese. He puts a slice of cheese Speaker 4 (13:31) and he pours chocolate on it and then he feeds it to her. Like in that? Speaker 6 (13:34) In the English one? You watched it this Speaker 4 (13:35) morning? That was a... After breakfast. I was like, I feel disgusting. Speaker 5 (13:40) But Speaker 4 (13:41) I think the one thing I do like about this film... is Akshay Kumar's action scenes are like really quite good to be honest like for that time I don't think there were heroes doing their own stunts like that yeah of course he made his entire Speaker 5 (13:52) that's all he had it's really Speaker 4 (13:54) cool to watch those scenes and all and obviously the dialogue is over the top but I mean the fact that Undertaker speaks in Hindi is still like I just love it it's the best he says panga which Speaker 4 (14:05) I just, I like that world a lot. This idea that like this illegal wrestling thing is so dangerous. Yeah. That like these are the most dangerous criminals in the United States. Speaker 5 (14:14) And they Speaker 4 (14:14) have to be stopped. I love it. And then he goes, obviously, that khiladi persona, they used to kind of transplant it to different storylines, right? And this, he's a, I think he's a soldier. Like he's coming back from holiday and all. I also like that as a storytelling device, like the guy who comes back home and he realizes everything's a mess and all of that stuff. Speaker 5 (14:31) Didn't he do a film called Holiday? Yes. He followed. He followed. He pretty much said the same thing. He had Speaker 4 (14:36) those khiladi Speaker 6 (14:37) without the fun. Speaker 4 (14:38) That used to be a thing that there was a pretty common trope of film like a guy comes back from all action films like that. He's like, oh, I'm just on vacation but oh no, everything's gone wrong. And like, Speaker 6 (14:48) Raveena Dhanalal had much to do. She's thrown to the side in Speaker 4 (14:52) this movie. Yeah, she's Speaker 6 (14:53) just completely dismissed. He has a meet-cute Speaker 4 (14:54) with her at the airport and it's like, oh, it's going really well. They bond. They have a song also where he's wearing these really weird dung-girly terms. Yeah, I know. Speaker 6 (15:01) Yeah, Speaker 4 (15:02) and then I remember, like, he starts... So Rekha's her sister. Yeah. Speaker 6 (15:05) And Speaker 4 (15:06) he starts an affair with Rekha. And I'm like, you have gone to the US to look for your brother who's gone missing. So his brother gets embroiled in this whole thing, right? So your brother's gone missing. Your... It's kind of a time crunch, I feel. I feel like you should be looking for... But he's Speaker 6 (15:19) just Speaker 4 (15:19) romancing Rekha. Speaker 6 (15:21) He's Speaker 4 (15:22) singing songs. Speaker 6 (15:23) When Ranbir is doing this in his movies, it's okay. But Akshay cannot. His Speaker 4 (15:27) brother is going to die. It's okay. He's like, I don't know. Let me dance with Rekha for a Speaker 3 (15:31) bit. Speaker 6 (15:31) He's doing it for the plot and for the job. He'll find the brother through Rekha. Yeah. So he has to do all these Speaker 4 (15:36) things. And there's Speaker 5 (15:37) a Speaker 4 (15:37) great fight scene with him in Undertaker which I still... As a kid, it was a big deal. It was. It really was. I was only Speaker 5 (15:43) looking forward to it because of this Undertaker thing but thanks for ruining my childhood. He Speaker 4 (15:47) does do a leg drop which is a very popular Hulk. So to beat the Undertaker, he does the leg drop. I was like, oh. I wonder who suggested that. They had Speaker 5 (15:57) a consultant. I think Brian Speaker 4 (16:00) Lee, the fake Undertaker, was probably helping them. So I'm a big Khiladi Yuga Khiladi fan. It's an insane movie. There's a song to Maa Sheera Wali. Dude, listen. I Speaker 6 (16:11) am a big fan of these. Okay, yeah. I think it's a lost art in Hindi films these days, which is the... climax wala song you Speaker 5 (16:18) know Speaker 6 (16:19) which evokes a lot of like the stakes are very high they are singing a song like in this in a lot of movies there are religious songs which is in this one like in Karan Arjun and Ujjay Makkari Love you Rakesh and Rajesh both the brothers we are big fans or you have Om Shanti Om Ek Haseena The End Curse also but that I think we have lost that and I missed that because I am a fan of this Mahashere Wali it's very young Speaker 6 (16:44) That's Speaker 5 (16:44) how he grew up. Speaker 6 (16:45) Yeah, exactly. It just makes you feel a lot. Speaker 4 (16:49) Yeah, there's a lot of Akshay. I Speaker 6 (16:51) can't stop singing it. There's that Speaker 4 (16:53) nepotism song also where he's like, This is from Speaker 5 (16:57) this Speaker 6 (16:57) film? Yeah. Speaker 4 (16:58) I thought it's from a different film. We are not the children of Speaker 6 (17:02) any hero. Speaker 4 (17:02) We are Speaker 6 (17:02) not the children Speaker 4 (17:02) of any Speaker 6 (17:02) hero. We are just Akshay. This Speaker 4 (17:06) is Speaker 6 (17:06) from this film? Yeah, it was. So it's Speaker 4 (17:09) a Speaker 6 (17:09) very popular song. It is. days everyone was like yeah and none of their names were Speaker 5 (17:14) actually but they're that's why good picks Speaker 6 (17:17) guys both of y'all have oh i was being very cocky and confident about my list y'all have come on i had to go at least past 2000 because i would get shit i thought you would pick up very um Speaker 5 (17:26) whatever anyway my Speaker 6 (17:28) number one is now i don't think uh both of y'all know me little bit so i don't think this is surprising to any one of y'all but my number one is judai Huh. But Judai is great. Speaker 5 (17:37) Stop it. Guys, Speaker 6 (17:38) it's objectively a Speaker 5 (17:39) bad film. Speaker 4 (17:40) Okay, one minute. What do you mean it's objectively? Objectivity is not, that's not like we've Speaker 5 (17:45) been Speaker 4 (17:45) drinking hot. I'm a serious guy. This is very cool. Speaker 6 (17:49) I have, I was floating this name around to a lot of my friends and all of them have told me, what a poster, firstly. All of them have told me, what is wrong with you? Judai is a great movie. I have re-watched Judai recently. It's not a great movie. There are very, very boring parts. No, that's why I don't care. You let it age by itself. the question mark he's the original Riddler first thing but Parishad I know but I can't help it she Speaker 4 (18:10) does mention Riddler there's also Speaker 6 (18:12) Abba Dabba Speaker 5 (18:12) Jabba Speaker 4 (18:13) which love it Speaker 6 (18:15) is my Abba Dabba Jabba and the concept of selling him off For two crores. It's so good. And her makeover and her little Pomeranian dog after that. And her party. And she's getting angry that they are like, don't call Speaker 1 (18:27) me Speaker 6 (18:27) mom, call me mommy. She's telling her kids. It's so cool. I love Jodhai only till, like for me, Kal Ho Na Ho ends when Mahi Ve, the song ends. Right? Because after that, come on, stop it. I don't want to watch all of this. For me, Jodhai ends when she sells him off. That's it. After that, because then Urmila is playing Tradwife 101. She's like doing Sindoor nonsense with him. And I don't know what. all is happening the kids are also very easily swayed and going to Urmila Anil is also first he's Speaker 4 (18:53) like Speaker 6 (18:53) no I don't want to be then he gets her pregnant and stuff like that and then Urmila leaves when Anil is ready to go with her by the way towards the end of the movie but he goes back Speaker 5 (19:00) to Shireen yeah but no then Speaker 6 (19:01) Urmila says actually I bought a flight ticket only for myself to go back to the Speaker 5 (19:05) US Speaker 6 (19:05) you go back to your wife and you know kids and everything that's Speaker 4 (19:09) amazing Speaker 6 (19:09) that's Speaker 4 (19:10) so Speaker 6 (19:10) moving Speaker 4 (19:10) and Speaker 6 (19:11) she's like it's okay because I have your I'm pregnant with your kids. So it's like... That's fine. That's fine. I'm good. So Judai, overall, not a good film. Very progressive. Speaker 4 (19:21) Yeah. It's very Speaker 6 (19:23) progressive. But there's like a sad Poonam Dillow cameo where she used to be rich and then Sridevi buys her flat. Her bungalow, sorry, bungalow. And she's like, now I have your house. And she's like, you'll always be lonely and sad. There's a lot going on. But
