Speaker 1 (0:00) Hi there, this is your friend Anna. And the question that I've been getting the most from all of my friends is what are we wearing? This age-old question isn't just about choosing an outfit. It's about choosing how we present ourselves to the world. I created the I Want Her Shoes podcast to dive deep into what it means to dress with intention, whether you're heading to a council meeting or just having a casual day out with your family. Join the conversation as we explore the power of personal style and the decisions that shape our public personas. Put on your favorite pair of shoes and step into my closet. Speaker 1 (0:50) Welcome back to the I Want Her Shoes podcast, where we talk about ambition, reinvention, confidence, style, and the stories behind the women becoming exactly who they want to be. I'm your host, Anna Aniston, and today we're talking about a word women sometimes have a really complicated relationship with, and that is power. What if we stopped thinking about power as something we're eventually given in a title, a promotion, a certain salary, a seat at the table, and started thinking about it as something we can begin building much earlier, right? My guest today is Alexis Morello, who believes women shouldn't have to wait until they're 40 or 50 to learn the lessons about confidence, money, negotiation, and self-advocacy. You could have changed their lives at 20, right? Like if you knew this information. Speaker 2 (1:38) So Speaker 1 (1:39) now this is so important. And Alexis is an author, public speaker, and the founder of Business of Her, a national women's leadership conference focused on empowering women during some of the most pivotal career building years in their lives. What I love about Alexis's message is that she isn't telling women to wait until they feel ready. She's telling them to claim their power while they're still becoming. And I feel like we're always becoming. Speaker 2 (2:05) Like Speaker 1 (2:05) it's just an evolving thing of becoming evolution of yourself, right? So today we're going to talk about confidence, money, ambition, self-doubt, asking for what you want, and women supporting women and what happens when we start teaching these lessons much earlier. And of course, we're going to be talking about style. These fabulous, amazing red bottoms that Alexis brought. Welcome to I Want Her Shoes podcast. Thanks Speaker 2 (2:28) for having me. I'm so excited to be here. I'm Speaker 1 (2:30) so excited to have you. And I know that you are not... from Miami. I am not. So tell us a little bit about your background before we dive right into the gritty. Speaker 2 (2:39) You got it. So I currently am in Las Vegas, Nevada, but I grew up and was born and raised in California. West Coast girl, but I do have Cuban roots, and so I'm Spanish. That's awesome. And Speaker 1 (2:50) I am Speaker 2 (2:50) Latina, and similar to you, we speak Spanish, but are blondes at the moment. Well, I don't speak Spanish. Oh, you don't? Yes, that's okay. I Speaker 1 (2:58) speak Russian. Ah. Yes, but my kids speak Spanish. Speaker 2 (3:01) There's an accent. Yeah, there's something there. And I think in Miami, most people speak Spanish. Yes, it's Speaker 1 (3:05) true. So Speaker 2 (3:05) it's like the natural, right? It's like a second language here. just never know but it's been a really cool journey to I think be a part of this all and getting to expand the mission to different states to different areas to different communities and that's Speaker 1 (3:18) why Speaker 2 (3:18) we're here nice Speaker 1 (3:19) and what Speaker 2 (3:19) part of California are you from we grew up in Huntington Beach so very surfer yeah that's very different I grew up in the Bay Speaker 1 (3:25) Area yeah like Marin County which is Very different, but it's very nice. I miss like the Speaker 2 (3:30) big trees and stuff. Okay. Over Speaker 1 (3:31) there, you know. Let's start with power. And this is your book. It's called Getting You Ready for Power. Basically, this is very intentional. And when you say power, what does that actually mean to you? I Speaker 2 (3:44) heard the other day, I don't know if you're familiar with Shelly Zalas, but she's the founder of The Female Potion. Speaker 1 (3:50) Yes. And she Speaker 2 (3:51) was doing this interview and there was a male she was speaking to and the male... said something along the lines of, and instead of a female empowerment, he said female power. And she looked at him and said, thank you so much for saying that because we don't ever say male empowerment. We just say males in power. It really hit me recently. And it's just a really great reminder that there shouldn't be this thing where we have to work towards being empowered because we are by nature, just powerful period for being, for living, for breathing. We all have our own innate power. So it's more so about how can you tap into it and how do you start to identify what your gifts and strengths and talents are so that you can walk in and start to feel the power that you already have. We already have it. You just have to tap into it. That's beautiful. Yeah. I Speaker 1 (4:41) love that. That's true because I think a lot of women have imposter syndrome and they have all these things where we forget about what you're talking about, the power. When did you first realize that women, especially young ones, need to become more comfortable with wanting it? Like when did it kind of click for you? Because I feel like sometimes it clicks and sometimes you need somebody to tell you that, right? Yeah. Speaker 2 (5:00) I think for me personally, I had a lot of moments where I felt like I was hitting a wall. And in those moments, I kept thinking like, you're just frustrated, right? You're like, it's not working. It's not clicking. Something's off. Something's off. But I think in reality, it's just you fighting against you because you know the answers, right? You know what feels good. You know what's in alignment with what you want. And every time you try and do something that somebody else says you should do or somebody else thinks you should do, you're going against your own self. And I think that's where the frustration for me started. So at some point, you have to just go, whoa, cut, stop. Like, this is not the life of the movie I want to live. You really have to start doing the work and figuring out what you want. and get that out into the world versus what anybody else thinks or says or does. And that's where your true power comes from. Speaker 1 (5:49) Yeah, no, and I think it's really great that you're focusing on women so early. Because so many women get into their 30s, 40s, or even 50s, and they realize I should have negotiated, I should have invested earlier, right? I should have asked for more. I just didn't do it because nobody told me to, or I didn't, or maybe I was too nervous. Why are we waiting so long? And I feel like it's such an important topic. Like, why isn't this in school? goals. Why don't we have this in college? Yeah. We Speaker 2 (6:16) talk about this all the time. And that's, so this book is really the book that I wish I had in my twenties where they didn't teach any of this in school, right? About what do you believe about yourself and what are your own beliefs and where did they come from and who's helping you? Who's on your team? What are you really passionate about? Those are the things that they did not teach us in college or in high school, at least for me. It was about Pythagorean theorem and the 90 degree angle and the hypotenuse. Like none of those things are really that important, right? What's what matters really is like, what do you want to do in this world? Have you thought about that question? Have you thought and reflected on the answer? And it's not going to come to you overnight unless you have this burning desire to be a doctor or something. You meet those people where it's like, I want to do this and they do it. That's great. But for most people, it's a journey. It takes a little bit of time to really figure out what it is and actually being here in Miami. We've had so many beautiful conversations with different moms about how they are reinventing themselves, right? At 40, at 50, at 60. And
