Speaker 2 (0:44) It's a warm afternoon in 1966 on a hillside overlooking the Brazilian city of Niterói. A teenage boy is up there flying a kite when he stumbles onto something horrifying. Two grown men are lying dead in the grass. They're wearing matching business suits with raincoats layered on top, stretched out side by side on a bed of cut leaves. There's an empty water bottle next to them and a little packet holding two damp towels. And resting beside their heads are two homemade masks cut from lead shaped to cover the eyes. The police also find a notebook in one of their pockets. It contains a strange little to-do list. Be at the spot by 4.30. At 6.30, swallow the capsules. After they take effect, protect the metals and wait for the mask signal. So what were they waiting for up there? Did two careful, intelligent men poison themselves, chasing some kind of vision? Today's episode is all about one of the strangest unsolved deaths of the 20th century, the lead masks case. In August of 1966, two respected electronics technicians left their small town in Brazil, told their wives they were going one place, and quietly went somewhere else entirely. Three days later, they turned up dead on a hill in suits and raincoats and handmade masks. made of lead with a cryptic note and no clear cause of death. So was this a science experiment gone horribly wrong? A murder dressed up to look like something stranger? Or were they right about what they'd find up there? Let's talk about it. Speaker 2 (3:33) To understand how two men ended up dead on that hill, you first have to understand who they were and the very specific world they lived in. It's 1966 in Brazil. And this is a tense moment in the country's history. Two years earlier, the military had seized power in a coup. And the new government was quick to suspect anyone doing anything unusual. The economy was shaky with high inflation and people were being pushed to buy Brazilian-made products. instead of imported ones. Remember that for later. Our two main characters are from a town called Campos dos Goitas Casas, a few hours northeast of Rio de Janeiro. The first is Miguel Jose Viana. He's 34 years old, a radio repair technician, sharp and ambitious. He was so serious about his craft that back in the 1950s, he took an electronics course by mail from a school all the way in Los Angeles. The second is his friend and business partner, 32-year-old Manuel Barrera de Cruz, who owned a shop selling TV and radio parts. Both men were married with families and were known around town as smart, capable, respectable guys. But Miguel and Manuel had a second life, one that most of their neighbors knew nothing about. They belonged to a small circle of what was called scientific spiritualists. Here's the background. Brazil has a huge tradition of spiritism, which centers around the idea that the living can communicate with the spirits of the dead. It's a mainstream, organized religion there, with its own centers and ceremonies. Millions of people practice it. But Miguel and Manuel took it somewhere stranger. They mixed that spiritual belief with their day jobs in electronics. They became convinced that with the right equipment and the right rituals, they could actually make contact with beings from somewhere else, even other planets. It gives ET phone home a whole new meaning. And honestly, I'm not surprised their minds went there. Think about what their job actually was. Every single day, they pulled voices and music and pictures out of thin air. Invisible waves traveling through the walls captured by a bit of wire and metal. So if an antenna could reach a broadcast tower 100 miles away, why not a spirit? Heck, why not something even farther out than that? And they had a guide to get them there. His name was Elcio Cojera Gomez, a friend who also helped out at the shop. And he pulled the two men deeper into these beliefs. Later, one of their employees would describe Elcio as kind of a spiritual doctor, someone who advised Miguel and Manuel, not just on the spirit world, but on their health. That's going to come into play later too. Though I'll say this now, for the record. When investigators later took a hard look at Elsio, they could never pin anything on him. He had an alibi and he was never charged. Because here's the thing, their experiments had been escalating and they were dangerous. At one point, a device the men had built exploded in the garden of Manuel's family home. A blast so big, it shook the walls. Manuel's own father confirmed it happened. Then, a few months before our story, came the big one. According to Elcio, he, Miguel, and Manuel went out to a beach called Atifona. And during one of their experiments, they saw a glowing orange object out over the ocean, which then exploded. The blast was so powerful that locals thought it was an earthquake. A fisherman claimed he saw something fall into the sea. And this is where it gets wild. The Brazilian Navy took an interest in what happened. Around that time, their monitoring service reportedly picked up a strange radio conversation between three ham radio operators using call signs that weren't registered to anyone in Brazil. And that's Manuel and Miguel in a nutshell for you. Skilled, methodical, and utterly convinced. they were on the verge of something enormous. Then on the morning of August 17th, 1966, Manuel woke his wife up and told her that he and Miguel were heading to Sao Paulo to buy a used car and some parts for the shop. That was a lie. Here's what the investigation later pieced together about where they actually went. Instead of heading towards Sao Paulo, Miguel and Manuel boarded a bus to Niteroi, a city across the bay from Rio de Janeiro. They left Campos around 9 in the morning and arrived at the Niteroi bus station at about 2.30 in the afternoon. And then they started running some very specific errands. First, they went to a shop and bought two identical waterproof raincoats. Then they stopped at a little bar and grocery store where they bought a bottle of mineral water. Ice cold. The waitress who served the two men remembered them clearly afterward. She thought Miguel seemed nervous. He kept checking and rechecking his watch like a man with an important appointment. And here's a small but telling detail. Even though they were obviously in a hurry, the men waited to get a receipt for that water bottle because the bottle had a deposit on it and they wanted to be able to return it
