Speaker 1 (0:00) Welcome back to Her Style Podcast. Last week, I gave you one of my favorite questions to ask when you're considering buying something new, which is, do I have a job for this in my wardrobe? And let's say you have a great answer. You can picture exactly how you want to wear it, what you'd wear it with, and where it fits into your real life. But before you buy it, there's one more question I want you to ask. And this might be the question that has saved my clients more money than almost anything else I teach. It's do I already own something that can do this job? Because there's a difference between not owning this particular thing and actually having a gap in your wardrobe. And today, I want to help you figure out which one you're dealing with before you spend the money. Also, at the end of today's episode, I'm going to make a very exciting announcement about something I have in the works for you this fall. You are not going to want to miss this update. So make sure you stick around, friend. We've got some big things coming. Speaker 1 (0:59) Welcome to Her Style Podcast, where we're all about empowering you to show up and get dressed every day with confidence. I'm your host, Heather Riggs, a 15-year and counting certified image consultant and color specialist, ready to build a wardrobe and a personal style you love. Let's get started. Speaker 1 (1:25) Hey friend, I'm so glad that you're here. Thank you for joining me today. Whether this is your first time listening to Her Style Podcast or if you have been around the block for many years with me, I'm so grateful that you're here. And we're going to start by jumping to last week's episode. I talked about the five fall pieces I'm actually seeing women buy and wear in real life. That can be rare for trends, let's just be honest. But we talked about giving your clothes jobs. I think before you buy something, it is so important to consider whether you actually have a job for it. it in your wardrobe? I love that question because it forces you to think beyond, do I like this? That's sort of step one. Do I like this? Do I like the way it looks on me? Then we want to get into the more practical headspace of thinking about how it fits into our larger wardrobe. But There's another question that can be even more powerful in saving you from yourself and getting into a state of buyer's remorse. I already shared it with you in the intro, so I guess the spoiler alert is out. The question is, do I already own something that can do this job? So last week we asked, do I have a job for this in my wardrobe? And this week we're asking whether you already own something that can do that job in your wardrobe. We're just peeling back the onion. We're getting deeper and deeper on the layers with each and every episode lately. I don't know why they keep spiraling from one into the next, but hopefully you're enjoying this succession of questions. And I think this one that we're going to cover today can sound too simple to make much of a difference, but I want you to think about how often we shop because we want a different option for something that we can already do. This comes up a lot during my shop your closet challenges. You might see a cute jacket out there in the wild and immediately picture it with jeans for a dinner out. And that's great. You've given it a job. You can see how it fits into your life. But what are you wearing with jeans for dinner out now? Maybe you already have a cute leather jacket, a great blazer, a beautiful cardigan you love that gives you the exact kind of outfit that you're after. Or let's say that you find a dress that would be perfect for church. You don't own anything quite like it, but you already have six dresses that you love wearing to church. That's the distinction I want you to start noticing. Different doesn't automatically mean missing. And I'm certainly not saying you could never buy another jacket because you already own one or that six dresses is your lifetime allotment of dresses. But once you realize the job is already covered, you're making a different decision. You're not filling a gap anymore. You're deciding whether this new option adds enough that you want to spend the money on it. This came up in such a good way during a Her Style Collective group coaching call recently. One of our members had bought a sweater
