Speaker 3 (0:16) I disintegrated the Tigrans weekend at Olga's frozen to ginger water slide boogaloo and being Lucia Mars. Hello. No, no. Do that one Speaker 2 (0:31) again. Speaker 3 (0:32) And being Lucia Mars. Better. Speaker 2 (0:38) You know what? I'm just going to take it as it is. Speaker 3 (0:42) Hello, crawlers, and welcome to episode 65 of your Dungeon Crawler Carl podcast. We are covering A Parade of Horribles, chapters 45 through 51 today. And I'm Grant. I'm Speaker 2 (0:57) mortified to be on this Speaker 1 (0:58) show after that intro. Speaker 2 (1:00) John. And I'm Martin as well. Ditto. Yeah. Speaker 3 (1:04) You guys don't like that? No. Speaker 2 (1:06) I Speaker 3 (1:06) was trying to keep it all 90s. I don't know why. Good question. Although, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids might be in 80s. It might be late Speaker 2 (1:14) 80s. Yeah. Speaker 3 (1:15) I'm not really sure. I feel like I saw it in the 90s. Speaker 2 (1:18) And being John Malkovich squeaked in at 1999. Speaker 3 (1:22) It squeaked in. What a year. Folks, we got a big episode today. What? It squeaked in. What a year. What? I mean, Fight Club and Matrix also came out Speaker 1 (1:37) that year. It was a big year. 1999 was Speaker 3 (1:39) a big year, movie-wise. It was fun movies. Yeah. Speaker 1 (1:42) All Speaker 3 (1:43) right. We got a big episode. And before we get into all of it. I also have a couple of cool things that happened in the week since we recorded our last episode. Speaker 1 (1:56) You sent us a message saying, hey, I've got a surprise for you guys. So, like, we're going to do that thing when we get here. And I'm like thinking, fuck, he's going to make me wear. Did he get me a Nana costume? Speaker 1 (2:12) A man o' war costume? No, a banana costume. A banana costume. Look, you're that Speaker 3 (2:16) banana crawler from book Speaker 1 (2:17) two or three or whatever. Speaker 3 (2:18) I Speaker 1 (2:18) got Speaker 3 (2:18) something where Martin gets to sit on your neck and you guys are now a man-tar. Speaker 1 (2:23) It's Speaker 3 (2:24) going Speaker 1 (2:24) to be great. Speaker 3 (2:26) You're laughing, but we wouldn't put that past you. I don't. There's certain things I think you'll begrudgingly do and he won't. I just don't think I can manage that one. What? Speaker 1 (2:39) I'm just. thrilled at the idea of that, that a man tar could be a half man, half man, but like they're two different races. Speaker 3 (2:50) He's got, uh, he's got identity issues. All right. So our first one, we were contacted by a listener, Robert Griswold, who is, uh, not only a big fan of the series and I guess presumably us, but also has a little Etsy shop where he makes patches. Oh, He makes Dungeon Crawler Carl patches. Robert Griswold. You can check him out at dungeoncrawlerpatch.etsy.com. And he was just like, hey, I want to send you some patches. I like the show. And if you really want, you can also send people to my site. And if they use Hello Crawlers as a coupon code, they get 10 % off. Oh, nice. Cool. I was like, I'm not getting paid for this, but sure. Let me see whatever your stuff is. And then he sent it. Speaker 2 (3:35) And I Speaker 3 (3:35) was like, what the hell? Check it out. Oh Speaker 1 (3:39) my God. Speaker 3 (3:39) Check out his patches here. I'll put them up on Speaker 1 (3:42) screen for you guys to see too. Those are awesome. Yeah. He's Speaker 3 (3:44) a Speaker 1 (3:44) badass. He just sent two of these things. These are incredible. Speaker 3 (3:47) I just said if you want to send a few. I didn't know he meant a few as in two full sets of everything he made. That's fucking great. Yeah. Aren't these badass? I'm Speaker 1 (3:58) actually working on a shirt right now that's like the battle rattle. Oh, sweet. So, and I was like looking for, you know, where's the placement of these things and what are the particularities of the designs and stuff? And this guy just fucking like lapped me. Well, Speaker 3 (4:14) now you can just copy him. Yeah, I'll just steal him. No. I mean, everybody steals from you, so. Speaker 1 (4:20) This is great, man. I love the attention to detail because like some of the patches are small. Some of them are medium. Some are large. He's got all the size relationships, right? Right. It looks like he's got all the styles. Correct. Like that's fantastic. You Speaker 3 (4:33) know what else is fucking cool? Yeah. Speaker 1 (4:35) I Speaker 3 (4:35) saw on his video on Instagram that you can do a black light on the skull of Pendra one. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I can Speaker 2 (4:45) see that. And Speaker 1 (4:46) it's so big. It's a fucking massive. Yeah. Speaker 2 (4:48) Like it should be on, on the back. Speaker 1 (4:49) Yeah. I'm going Speaker 2 (4:50) to Speaker 1 (4:50) put it on the side of your ego. Speaker 2 (4:56) See, it's okay to just ignore some of those. Just ignore that. And then later I'm Speaker 3 (5:02) going to shed a tear. All right. And then I have a surprise number two for you guys. Oh, shit. Speaker 2 (5:08) This is the good one. Speaker 3 (5:11) So... No, the other one's also good. I wasn't fucking with you guys this week. You front-loaded it with a good Speaker 2 (5:17) one. Speaker 3 (5:17) Yeah. Speaker 2 (5:18) All right. Speaker 3 (5:19) So we got this down. Grant, what else you got? Suckers. We got a package from our friends over at Maeve Chocolate. Oh, Speaker 2 (5:27) yeah. The Speaker 3 (5:27) Chocolatiers. And Speaker 2 (5:28) it's Speaker 3 (5:29) kind of fucking nuts. So they sent... I like nuts. They sent a box with some new... chocolates inside, which Speaker 1 (5:40) I just have the box here. It's empty because I have the chocolates in a cooler. Yeah. Speaker 3 (5:43) And then they sent like this paper and it's got like security clearance, maximum encryption protocol, Caesar shift number three. And then there's code and crawler stats and all this. They're doing a fucking ARG for their chocolate for dungeon crawler Carl. Now, if you guys also want to try and decipher this, here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to put this on screen. And you guys can pause. You can try and figure out the code yourself. But otherwise, in a second here, I'm just going to translate for you guys what it says. Speaker 1 (6:14) Because my daughter helped me translate this. Speaker 3 (6:18) And it says, the next Maeve and Dungeon Crawler Carl bar is coming. An additional crawler has been honored with the chocolate. Prepare your tootsies, crawlers. And then it's just got like the details of Carl's stats. His planet, Earth, class, was an agent provocateur and all that. Yeah. And then level collapse on October 1st, 2026. So their new chocolate bar comes out 2026. And then they sent us their chocolate bar, which got one for each of you guys. Speaker 1 (6:54) Nice. Speaker 1 (6:57) Oh, it's a pun. Sweet potato chips. Oh, okay. Okay. Again, I love the art on these packages. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Speaker 3 (7:07) And I actually already tried a little bit. If you guys want, you can break off a little piece if you want to try any. You're welcome to. Do not feel obligated. They aren't paying us so we can be mean now. Speaker 1 (7:19) The last one was delicious. It was. I'm kidding. It was great. Speaker 2 (7:24) Yeah. Even if we're not getting paid, why would we be mean? I Speaker 1 (7:28) don't know. Yeah. Why would you think they'd be mean about anything? So I already had a Speaker 3 (7:32) bite. These are gluten-free. Their business is all lovely and wonderful. And these have sweet potato in Speaker 1 (7:40) them. And I actually taste the sweet potato. Yeah. Speaker 3 (7:41) I thought Speaker 1 (7:42) it was pretty good. Speaker 3 (7:43) My daughters both liked it. My wife, I don't think is as big into sweet potatoes. She was like, eh, but. Speaker 2 (7:49) I actually hate sweet potatoes. Oh yeah? This is good. That's awesome. Speaker 1 (7:54) Yeah. Yeah. Is the sweet potato like a Toraline reference? Right. Bro. Speaker 3 (8:00) That's awesome. What timing? Cause then they sent. A couple of other mystery boxes. You got a lot of big boxes down here. Yeah, I was like, what the fuck are they doing? They sent all this stuff. And the first one, who we got? Speaker 1 (8:15) Okay. In some cultures, this is a marriage proposal. Speaker 1 (8:26) That's awesome. Speaker 3 (8:27) Yeah. And then. In the second box, you want to go ahead and open that guy? All righty. It's like Christmas here. Speaker 1 (8:34) They just, is this also from Maeve? Speaker 3 (8:37) Yeah, this is all from them. Like they're doing, they're doing puzzles and ARGs. They're sending thematic, uh, gifts that go along with it. Speaker 2 (8:48) So it's, it's fake Carl feet to Speaker 1 (8:50) put on your feet. Rubber fake Speaker 3 (8:51) Carl Speaker 1 (8:52) feet, a potato. This is the horniest marketing gimmick I've ever seen. But Speaker 2 (8:57) check it out. Like it's got the little non-skid bumps on the bottom. Yeah. So everywhere you go is the Speaker 1 (9:02) shower. Right. And there's one more for you to open. Oh, for fuck's sake. Speaker 3 (9:08) I just really wasn't expecting this. It's a fucking mail bomb. A toy bomb. Speaker 1 (9:15) It's got Ted Kaczynski in you. It's more of an Acme Wile E. Coyote Speaker 2 (9:22) thing. I guess you're Speaker 1 (9:22) right. Speaker 2 (9:23) In Speaker 1 (9:23) my brain, the Unabomber. That's not what real bombs look like. Speaker 2 (9:27) Use the long fuse. The cartoon bombs. Unabomber like a bundle of dynamite Speaker 1 (9:32) with a big clock on it. Remember when the Unabomber was just dropping large anvils on people? It Speaker 2 (9:41) didn't fit the brand, Speaker 3 (9:42) though. Tricking them into driving into brick walls. Speaker 2 (9:45) Yeah, dropping pianos on people. Well, between the bomb and the feet and the tour lane, I guess this is all ready for Halloween. No kidding. So now I need you Speaker 3 (9:57) guys to put on your boxer shorts because you have some feet to go with it. Speaker 3 (10:03) Oh, did you see? Oh, you did. Because you sent it to us. What? Spirit Halloween has a Dungeon Speaker 1 (10:08) Crawler Carl outfit. Yeah, officially licensed. Ridiculous. Speaker 2 (10:12) That was the thing. Looking at it, it was like, wait, it's actually using Dungeon Crawler Carl in the name. Because usually they change it up. That's the funnest thing about those costumes. That's how they change Speaker 1 (10:20) the name. Denon was the one that posted about it on his Facebook. He's like, of all the crazy licensed merch we have, I think this is the best. Yeah. Yeah. And it had all the right stuff too. Yeah. Speaker 2 (10:31) I Speaker 1 (10:32) was like, man, Speaker 2 (10:32) this property has arrived. Although Speaker 3 (10:34) he's wearing Tevas or something on his feet. I'm like, you could have just taken the stock photo with him barefoot. Yeah. He's not walking around in the stock. Well, you ever Speaker 2 (10:42) notice how many people do cosplay, Speaker 1 (10:45) but they're wearing Crocs. Yeah. At least I've met Speaker 3 (10:48) the Crocs. Speaker 1 (10:49) You had a, you probably had to pay the model a little bit more because at that point nowadays that soft core porn. Yeah. You think Matt was skimping? He's like, I ain't paying you for that. Yeah. Speaker 3 (11:04) All right. So I just want to say thank you so much to Maeve. This was. Speaker 1 (11:07) Unexpected. It's really cool. Speaker 3 (11:09) And once Speaker 1 (11:09) again to Robert Griswold. Speaker 3 (11:11) Yeah. And I guess you can check out the chocolates are going up October 1st, which is after this episode comes out. So they're out already. Speaker 2 (11:18) I also got to say, it's some good quality chocolate. There's so much chocolate in the world that is just crap. Yeah. I'm happy. Speaker 1 (11:27) I Speaker 3 (11:27) just love seeing not only, you know, people. People can kind of glom onto the cultural zeitgeist and write it for money like we're doing. Speaker 1 (11:39) Or... It's like, be careful. They can be true Speaker 3 (11:42) fans. Like, what it seems like Maeve's doing, and they're, like, playing into it with, like, games and gimmicks. They didn't have to send all those. It's really Speaker 1 (11:48) fun. They're making it, like, fun and clever, and they're, like, designing stuff. It's really cool. Perfect for, like... adding layers of interest to different parts of your marketing campaign to, you know, if you're an artist making stuff, like there's all sorts of cool stuff that you can do that isn't just straightforward. Speaker 2 (12:07) Yeah. Yeah. It's, you know, it's, it's pretty rich and it's not so simple that anybody can just come along, see a little bit and go like, oh, I'm Speaker 3 (12:16) going Speaker 2 (12:16) to make stuff. It's like, you really have to get into it. And if you don't, the people who are into the series, they kind of know. Right. It's like, well, that's a cat saying this is an outrage, but it's none of this is correct. Speaker 3 (12:32) Yeah, I the the idea that this expansive game environment makes it so that there are narratives that we that Matt will never explore, but it allows like fan fiction like we do at the end of our episodes and people being able to just play off of the wacky devices. Speaker 1 (12:52) It's so rich. You're right. Yeah, it's Speaker 3 (12:54) very cool. All right, we got a couple of comments before we dive into the episode. First comes from IEE underscore Phil, who says, in an earlier episode, there was a theory about how the AI was the size of Carl's foot and that the AI might be attached to Carl's foot. And that's why it wants Carl to smush things. Is it possible that the defeat side of the five-sided coin is actually removing the AI from Carl in a way? Speaker 2 (13:25) I mean, I can't dispute that. I Speaker 3 (13:27) thought that was such a cool one. That's a great idea. Speaker 2 (13:30) Because even thinking about it afterwards, I was like, what is it that bothers me about that whole defeat? Speaker 3 (13:35) Yeah. Like Speaker 2 (13:36) why? Because only the AI is known to focus on the feet. So why? Speaker 3 (13:41) Removing the feet is removing the AI's favorite object from Carl, but maybe it's just stripping. Uh, the AIs. I wonder if the AI has an influence over Carl that Carl doesn't realize just being attached to him. Like the eye on his chest has an influence over him. The ring has an influence over him. Speaker 1 (13:58) Yeah. A Speaker 3 (13:59) lot of competing interests there. Uh, hardly Heather says, I've been thinking about ponies. So does. I wonder if there's something about collecting that gives him some sort of bonus. Carl has the cookbook. I suspect there's something to donuts hats. And I wonder if the other reason for Pony to collect all of these drinks and drink them is for some boost he gets, I guess. Speaker 2 (14:22) Well, I mean, he's getting a buff from them. Plus, the kid loves sodas. The Speaker 1 (14:30) kid. People Speaker 3 (14:31) got so excited the Speaker 1 (14:32) first time Speaker 3 (14:32) you dropped calling him a kid. Yeah, I think he Speaker 1 (14:37) probably... There's nothing in here that makes me think that this person is wrong. Right. Like it makes complete sense in this world that yeah, maybe he is hiding some kind of complex buff structure based on like flavors of soda or whatever. Uh, but yeah, also he might just like soda, man. I'm not, I'm not asking you like what buffs you're getting from all these pogs you have. Speaker 1 (15:04) I'm kidding. Believe me. Charisma with the ladies, actually. It's all minuses to charisma. You see Speaker 3 (15:13) this holographic Speaker 1 (15:13) eight ball I have on Speaker 3 (15:14) this pog? This slammer is legit. Speaker 2 (15:18) Well, also, like, Prepetente wouldn't be hiding it. To him, it'd be like, well, yeah, of course. I just didn't mention it, but, I mean, you idiots should have known that. Speaker 1 (15:29) And I did, I did look it up. I, because I went back and I listened to last episode and I was like, I think they are, they're glasses of soda. They're like, he got, he has glasses of soda. You guys like corrected me and said, no, they're bottles, but no, they're actually like glasses of soda with, with, uh, with, uh, straws in them. And that's what he has in his inventory that he bought from glass Speaker 3 (15:51) bottles, glass, like, uh, like cups. Oh, yeah. Speaker 1 (15:55) They were bottles at one point, and sometimes I guess he does get bottles, but from Hungry Eyes Village, he bought cups. Well, Speaker 3 (16:04) at this point, maybe it's just he's got an addiction. Yeah. Speaker 1 (16:08) If he doesn't have the bottle, I feel like the essence is removed. He's buying draft soda and keeping that in the cups in his inventory. Okay. Speaker 2 (16:19) I mean, because he started with Big Red. which we know comes in bottles. Yes. And then the idea of taking 200, you know, I mean, you can see, you know, cases in bottles. But in cups, you're like, how do you keep that from spilling? Speaker 3 (16:40) Inventory magic. Inventory magic, yeah. Anyway, this is clearly Matt just saying that he's got a Coke problem, right? Yeah, Speaker 2 (16:50) I suppose. Speaker 3 (16:53) All right. Next comment comes from Mango underscore Mugfish, who says, near the end of book seven, Samantha talks about Kimmy. The Camaris figure helping to get her pregnant. Do we think Camaris could be the scavenger? Hmm. Speaker 3 (17:11) There was that note you were talking about where Shima is like, whoa, we have a Speaker 1 (17:17) Camaras figure in here. Does Samantha know? So there are two people that I'm thinking about when it comes to like the scavenger, right? It's because it could be a man. And if it is a man, it's Camaras or maybe King Blaine. King Blaine was the other guy that she was always talking about being her, her husband or a boyfriend or whatever. Uh, there's. King Blaine and Camaris and Camaris somehow helped her get pregnant. So I don't know. It could be one of those two. Speaker 3 (17:47) It's interesting. These theories are all building and culminating. We're getting to the end, to Speaker 1 (17:55) the Speaker 3 (17:55) finish line. And then last one comes from RoswellValentine575, who says, I wonder if what she Maria blinded Carl to was the strengths and abilities of his friends, and that in addition to his martyr tendencies, it has him carrying out increasingly dangerous plans by himself, even if he knows other crawlers would gladly help. Speaker 2 (18:16) He's coming around. Yeah, Speaker 3 (18:19) I think he has to. Yeah. Speaker 2 (18:21) Through the Speaker 3 (18:22) structure of these races. He's Speaker 2 (18:24) like, I got to Speaker 3 (18:24) have Speaker 2 (18:24) other Speaker 3 (18:25) people help me. I Speaker 1 (18:27) don't Speaker 3 (18:27) know. There's something blinding him. And I just wonder, he's our narrator. What is he and us not seeing that is actually happening to him? Speaker 2 (18:38) That's always going to be a thing. But so much of it before was just him growing up isolated, where he felt like he couldn't really count on people. So he became, what's the word my daughter uses? Speaker 1 (18:55) uh hyper hyper competent okay um Speaker 2 (18:59) yeah and also his savior complex of well i need to do this i need to protect these people i need to not ask of them but also if i dig down deep i know i can do it or i think i can yeah that seems Speaker 1 (19:16) more likely to me because it's in line with the character's history Uh, maybe it's just about being blind to how other people perceive you. Well, cause yeah. Speaker 3 (19:27) Other folks. He's like, everyone thinks I'm fucking cool. And everyone's like, God, Carl, the worst. I don't think he Speaker 1 (19:34) even thinks about it. Speaker 2 (19:35) Yeah. Speaker 1 (19:35) You know, he's just has no, no construct of himself in his head when it comes to other people and other people like, God damn, Carl, you're fucking nuts. Could Speaker 3 (19:45) be. I Speaker 1 (19:46) mean, they keep kind of saying it to him and he's like, oh yeah, nuts like a Speaker 2 (19:50) fox. Wait, that's Speaker 3 (19:51) not a thing. All right, guys. Patreon.com slash Hello Crawlers. You can support us there. Hello Crawlers.com slash store. You can buy merch there. We have a bunch of great new merch that you dropped again. Thanks. Every week, it seems like. And we want to remind you guys, we're going to be at Cape Con in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. November 6th through 8th. And we'd love to see you guys there. Is that right? Speaker 2 (20:19) 6th through 8th? I think so. I Speaker 1 (20:21) think so. Speaker 3 (20:22) Okay. Yeah. And your homework assignment is going to be book eight. The Heat 5 interlude, which leads right into chapter 52 through chapter 56. That's your homework. And yes, we're stopping right before chapter 57, which people keep telling me they're excited about. Speaker 1 (20:43) I Speaker 3 (20:44) was talking about. So we're stopping before it just to fuck with you. Speaker 2 (20:47) Wait, 52 through 56? Yeah. Speaker 3 (20:50) All right. There's an interlude and then there's chapter 52. Oh, yeah, yeah, Speaker 2 (20:54) yeah. Speaker 1 (20:54) No, you're right. Yeah. Interlude minus. Gotcha. Yeah. Speaker 3 (20:58) All right. We start in on chapter 45. Carl's pissed that his mercenaries got murked. They got run over. He is Speaker 1 (21:07) raging. Livid. Absolutely. He goes, I... Is the best way to describe it bonkers or berserk? I'd say berserk. Right? Yeah. Speaker 3 (21:22) Yeah, it's a blind rage, Speaker 1 (21:25) like a berserker thing. Yeah, Speaker 3 (21:27) he's punching in the door. He's saying he's going to rip their fucking heads off. He's charging into their garage to murder. How far he's come along in these few months. He's ready to just straight murder these dudes. Speaker 2 (21:41) Honestly, don't. Speaker 3 (21:42) I Speaker 2 (21:42) think we've seen him like this before. I mean, he's been pissed and maybe a little out of control, but he's just completely enraged and lost all reason. Speaker 1 (21:51) So much so he's like Street Fighter 2-ing that car. Yes. Speaker 2 (21:55) Yes. Speaker 1 (21:56) Just kick, kick, kick, kick, kick. Speaker 2 (21:57) And Dota's Speaker 1 (21:58) like, stop, you can't fight a car. Speaker 2 (22:00) I was like, you never played Street Fighter, you can totally fight a car. So, yeah, like our last show, I couldn't stop where... Those guys got run over like it was some joke. Like, do Speaker 1 (22:14) -do-do-do Speaker 2 (22:14) -do-do. I had to keep going. And through all this, as much as everybody's like, Carl, stop. You're losing your shit. I was with him. Yeah, I was. I was with him 110%. Kill him. Kill him. Speaker 1 (22:27) I'm like yelling. Speaker 2 (22:29) That whole, like, the way that was so maliciously done to run them over and then back up over them again. Speaker 2 (22:38) Yeah. I mean, I even had that big of an attachment to those mercenaries as he did, but just that act was just like, no. It's Speaker 1 (22:47) the point of it. Yeah. Like, yeah, you're just going to do that. This is just showing us who you are. You need to fucking die. Yeah. And I'm so mad I'm going to do it. Yeah. Speaker 3 (23:01) Yeah. I mean, the. The Carl that was portrayed on the TV show of Dungeon Crawler World Speaker 1 (23:09) is Speaker 3 (23:10) now this Carl. Like, he can swing into a blind rage all of a sudden, and, like, he's losing control of himself. It's something that he's been afraid of. Anytime Speaker 1 (23:20) that he, like, panics or gets really mad, like, we see him change. Like, we see him completely change. We see him turn into the guy who's gonna, like... jump across a map, dropping bombs into whatever the fuck, or like jump into somebody else's garage and start. He's literally trying to beat them through their vehicle. Yeah. Like he's trying to fight his way through a fucking car. And he kind of comes close. He almost does it. Yeah, yeah, Speaker 2 (23:51) yeah. Well, he's yelling, come on, get out here. It's like you see in all these road raid videos. Yeah. Somebody's like, come on, come on out. And I think the person in the car is going. No, I don't see any reason for me to do that. Speaker 3 (24:03) Yeah. Speaker 2 (24:04) If I Speaker 3 (24:05) made a note here, it kind of felt almost like this, like reality TV show, like this manufactured drama in the suburbs kind of thing. I mean, because like juxtaposed against these, these crazy wacky races, they keep returning to this, these garages in a cul-de-sac or Speaker 1 (24:21) whatever. Speaker 2 (24:22) And Speaker 3 (24:22) so to see like neighbors fighting like across the yard kind of thing like this, and I'm going to murder you. It just feels like there is an editor and producers behind the scenes just trying to make this kind of drama between these people. And yeah,
