Speaker 2 (0:00) I would never think that like someone that is a content creator could be like just that insensitive and mean. So I was at the beach club and Emily said that she didn't understand why I would ever start to do content if I was worried about being outed. Hearing Emily say that, I felt like she was being very insensitive. I felt attacked. And when I realized that Megan was staying behind with Emily, that kind of threw me through a loop. and just kind of hurt my feelings because it kind of felt like she was kicking my ass. Speaker 4 (0:58) and welcome to another episode here of Everyone's Business But Mine. My name is Cara Berry. Today we're joined by an incredible guest. Today we're talking double lives of suburban wives. And I think you know our guest as the Sister Wives professor. I know him as Adam. Hello, sir. Welcome to the stage. Speaker 3 (1:18) Oh, Dr. Berry, it's so nice to be with you. Thank you. I'm Speaker 4 (1:21) so Speaker 3 (1:21) happy. Thank you Speaker 4 (1:22) for recognizing my credentials. Nobody ever does. Speaker 3 (1:26) You're preaching to the choir. Speaker 4 (1:32) No, I'm so glad Speaker 3 (1:32) to be here. I love collaborating with you and I love collaborating with you. And listeners of mine that have listened to our crossovers know that you bring out. in the best way, the worst side of me. So I'm very excited. I Speaker 4 (1:45) do that with a lot of people. And I actually, I think it's so fun. It's my favorite time to be behind a microphone. Everyone needs that friend. Speaker 3 (1:52) Everyone needs that friend. Speaker 4 (1:54) Absolutely. I, yeah, we have a lot to talk about. We just spoke about how you binged and how you find this to be like a pretty good watch. But I think, you know, as we're brothers and sister wives, we do need to talk about the, not even really so much the trailer, but like the news and what was not in the trailer, who was not in the trailer. And the fact that we had TLC drop two trailers, I think, because the first one people were like, what's happening here? And thinking that the. cleverly worded um statements from christine mary and janelle about the fact that robin and cody were no longer filming with them was perhaps maybe just a they're not going to be filming ever together again but robin and cody would be doing their own thing and we'd have like two kind of split sides of a show and then tlc was like oh no we really have to let you guys know they're not coming back like definitely robin and cody we were making it clear you guys they're not returning that was so Speaker 3 (3:07) clear they watched the feedback and we're like oh shit no we we gotta really dumb this down yeah for me it's everybody including me was like oh okay so they're filming separately and they're gonna do the mid-season reveal of like hey here's cody and robin they're like um yeah don't expect that because i don't think that's what's happening Speaker 4 (3:24) And we're going to have to hit our context of people so you guys know it's real. So, I mean, I think this is like pretty shocking for a lot of reasons. I think you can agree that, you know, Cody's a bit of the greatest showman in his own mind. So the fact that he would just disappear out of thin air after, you know, almost. Two decades on reality television is really shocking. Not even a statement from them. Except for Ace Speaker 3 (3:54) Fanning's fake statement that got me completely. Thank you, Ace, for Speaker 4 (3:57) that. It got Speaker 3 (3:57) a lot of Speaker 4 (3:58) people, yeah. Speaker 3 (3:59) No one's fault but my own. Speaker 4 (4:03) But yeah, what are your thoughts? Like, what are your thoughts on the fact that we have like truly not heard anything from Robin and Cody? Doesn't this feel like such a deviation from who we think they are? Yes. Yes. So Speaker 3 (4:17) 100%. I have. on October 1st, an entire deep dive podcast on this exact subject coming up on my Patreon. But I will go ahead and tell you because I'm not just trying to shill. I'm just saying like- Speaker 4 (4:29) Just the elevator pitch. Yeah, I think that if I were to Speaker 3 (4:32) guess. I genuinely think that given Robin's behavior in the tell-alls or the one-on-ones last season, because I said on my podcast, I think I even said to you, like, her behavior showed me, like, this is a woman that believes that this is the last time she's going to be on this show. Speaker 4 (4:48) Her Speaker 3 (4:49) behavior was so, like, burning it down. My guess, and it's just a guess, and I'm always wrong, folks. I'm pretty good at interpreting what's going on. I am terrible at predicting what's going to happen. But my prediction is... She, in some form or fashion, said to Cody, like, it's going to be me or the show. Because the only thing that scares Cody says, I'm only scared of poverty. Bullshit. He's scared of being divorced completely. Yeah. That's what scares him the most is losing Robin. Because then the only thing worse than being publicly divorced three times is being publicly divorced four times. And there's no fifth divorce to come. So that's as bad as it's going to get. I do think she was like, this is. And listen, if she's like, this is bad for me, this is bad for my mental health. Speaker 3 (5:32) I get it. You and I have had a lot of fun looking at the mean Instagram. You look at her Instagram comments right now. They're like, ha ha. You thought you were, you were important to the show. Like, go, you know, I can't even Speaker 4 (5:43) believe I haven't gone back to see what people have been saying. I'm going to do this right after this. Speaker 3 (5:47) I did. So I'm not above it, but that's my assumption is she probably was like, I can't do it. I don't want to do it anymore. Speaker 1 (5:55) Yeah. Yeah. And Speaker 3 (5:56) if so, I support that genuinely. Like I'd rather they be on the show selfishly, but if it's. bad for them, then don't be on the show. I don't know. Yeah, Speaker 4 (6:03) certainly. Nobody can sit there and be like, why wouldn't you come back? She has the roughest time of all and she's a very sensitive woman. So, you know, we can't begrudge in the reality of things, even though it's entertaining. Right. Speaker 3 (6:20) So Speaker 4 (6:20) we'll check out more of your thoughts on your Patreon. Tell everybody where they can find it. Speaker 3 (6:26) Yeah, sure. Patreon.com slash the Sister Wives Professor. And you can get all those benefits directly through an Apple subscription as well if you are an Apple podcast person. And also all kinds of stuff on the free feed, too, covering Sister Wives and just about finishing season four of Seeking Sister Wife. And so all kinds of good stuff going on. Speaker 4 (6:44) Oh, man, that's also another incredible journey that I encourage everybody to go on. But yeah, for those of you unaware, the Sister Wives season, whatever, what are we, 20, 21? 21. Will be airing October 4th. Speaker 3 (7:03) Yes. If I'm not mistaken. Fifth on streaming, I want to say. Yes. Speaker 4 (7:07) So check it out, y'all. You know, we'll be around. Absolutely. Let's get into the episode of Double Lives of Suburban Wives. Coming out of your binge, just tell me like general thoughts. Like, were you surprised? Were you going in, I'm assuming, with like no expectations? Respectfully, I do feel like when it comes to a TLC show, that should be the guiding light for you. Go in at the basement. You know? Speaker 3 (7:33) Yeah. I didn't know what to expect. So many things. So my area of research when I was a full-time teacher and as a researcher, as a professor was stigma and identity and how we hide or have conflicts between different identities. Like even if you're not doing sex work with being a sexual being while being a mother, you know, you're kind of not supposed to do that. You're especially as a woman, you're supposed to be sexualized, not be sexual. And so I went into this being like, Oh, this is going to be great. Because I'm going to see these women managing stigma and managing stigma through a community. And that's what I got. I got what I wanted out of the show. And there's drama and there's husbands punching each other in the face and there's content. And I said to my wife, I said, I'm going to say to Kara, and I want to, and like, first of all, I'm like pro sex work. Sex work is always going to exist. Sex work has always existed. It should be done safely. without trafficking, without exploitation, you know, all that stuff. But, you know, all that stuff. I said to my wife, I said, I can, on a weird level, kind of relate to content creation because it's a weird job. It's a weird thing to do. It permeates your whole life. Like you're always working. It's kind of like teaching. Like there's always something to be done, whether you're quote unquote at work or not. But I love their community. I have some certain thoughts about some of the communication, particularly with Megan's kind of potential issue or perceived. issue with Brie and stuff like that that I don't know if we want to get into or not because you've already I've heard you you've made hay of all that stuff already but those are the things that stuff that and Tammy and this is a very high compliment for me Tammy looks like Princess Zelda from Legend of Zelda as a kind of nerd I am that's like the nicest thing I could possibly say about her she's just they're all clearly everybody on the show is hot everybody's lovely the dudes the dudes are super handsome dad bods or I mean the one guy kind of looks like great value, Morgan Wallen, but we'll get into that. It's not a bad look. Better than mine. It's Speaker 4 (9:41) not Speaker 3 (9:41) a bad look. Sure. Better than my look. Fuck it. I don't know. Yeah. Speaker 4 (9:46) I mean, I feel like, yeah, you're right. The communication styles with a lot of people are like a big thing. I mean, the fact that there's like the looming fact that most of these people have not told their families and friends in real life that they are doing, you know, spicy content. And, That this show is also the other kind of like meta elephant in the room of like, we're talking about how scared we are to out ourselves while actively doing like the most outing of all. But Speaker 3 (10:19) also more so than especially most TLC stuff, they acknowledge the show. Like that typically doesn't happen. They acknowledge the cameras almost every episode. And I liked that because that's typically not what you get. Speaker 4 (10:30) Yeah, I agree. I love a fourth wall break. And like this show, it's like absolutely necessary. There were a few like first episodes where I'm like, okay, we have to like talk about the thing we have to. And finally they did. And it was just like, oh, my shoulders dropped, you know, but. In terms of this episode, we're starting off very emotionally heavy. We're on a girl's trip that's supposed to be, you know, we're connecting, we're pillow fighting, we're crying, we're laughing, we're getting drunk, we're hungover. And what's happening is that Emily has shit the bed yet again to everybody else. I don't feel this way. And that she has... ruined what good graces she, frankly, seemingly never had with a Macy church girl. And, you know, things just went, I like to say, from worse to worse-er. And they are now, like, in a complete stalemate. Like, it's very tense in that house because Emily simply was like, why don't we talk about the thing? Macy, it feels like you're taking up a lot of emotional real estate, worrying about being caught, having photos being taken of you in public, etc. Girl, don't we might want to consider like toughening up just a little bit because we are on a show, girl. And this is going to have to be talked about. So she has done the worst, grievous sin possible, seemingly. And it's not good. So we're starting off this morning, church girl and her wig are asking, where is Emily? And more importantly, where's Megan? Like specifically, why would Megan even bother and dare to leave Emily behind? Why didn't she just leave her by herself at this like beach club? How dare she? We have a long existing friendship. My first question to you is why are we wearing the wig right now? Speaker 3 (12:40) That was my question for you. Speaker 4 (12:43) We're safe at home. We're under a blanket. Nobody's taking pictures. Why is the wig Speaker 3 (12:49) on? Is she just used to it? Do you think she's just used to it? Maybe she feels better. Maybe she feels more confident. I think she feels worse. Speaker 4 (12:55) I think it's like her opposite kryptonite. Like she gets very vulnerable in that wig. Speaker 3 (13:00) She gets really nervous, real paranoid. I think it's like bringing her down, frankly. The wig is so distracting. And I understand. the utility of it. But I want to double back to something you said, because this is obviously kind of like the thrust of the entire episode. This is what sets the entire episode is. Emily tries to give like tough love. That I think was her intention of like, look, we've all been, we're all going to either go through this or we've already been through it or whatever. It's just part of this job. And that was not received the way that she intended that happens. There's a lot of stuff with that probably could have gone. Better? I mean, the thing with communication is intention ultimately doesn't matter, unfortunately, as much as how something is received. Like, you can have the best of intentions, and if something goes bad and you hurt somebody's feelings, I don't think you get to say, no, your feelings aren't hurt. Emily kind of tried to, I think, tried to make amends with it. I think Emily's just... that's who she is she says that's who she is but at the same time if you're trying to enter an established group you're kind of at the mercy of the norms of the group you know what i mean what i thought was unfair was the treatment of megan where megan's like i don't i don't know like i don't want her to be off by herself being upset that was framed as like you're taking her side like that felt really unproductive of like somebody's got to go check on this one like she's here She was invited to be here or she's contractually obligated to be here on the show, whatever the hell. somebody has to show some care yeah Speaker 4 (14:32) i agree i don't understand how we're not just pulling back just a little bit and like seeing how this might look like how dare she not leave this woman alone on the dock by herself to think about what she said to me like it just feels very immature to me frankly and i don't really like i just don't understand this whole I mean, the loyalty is just wrapped up in her dislike of Emily. Like all of this is just like, you know, I don't like I don't fuck with her. So you can't. And if you seem like you might be, we got a problem. So. And you cannot fuck with Speaker 3 (15:09) somebody. You can just be like, this is just not my person. This is not my kind of person. I don't necessarily want this person in my group. This group is my safe space. And she's still in the I hate to say in the closet. You know what I mean? She's not. public. So I can understand her being very protective, but, and also Emily is abrasive. I like abrasive people. Yeah. I get along with abrasive people. I mean, I can get along with just, just about anybody. That's kind of my training, but Emily's a different kind of person. Emily, Emily too broke my heart early on in the season where she's like, I struggle to make friends and you can see that, but she wants to, some people just are wired the way they're wired. And I guess I hate to say, I see both sides. Like I always see both sides. Like that's my thing. And it can get really irritating, but here I so clearly see both sides other than the wig. I'm sorry. The wig is so distracting. She looks great in it, but I also, I'm like, I just, I wrote down, you are inside a home. The idea of the wig on. And due to your point, I hadn't thought about it. Is the wig causing you anxiety? Is it like this thing that's this like. She also got it from Amazon. Like who knows what's in that hair? Hey, she had a better wig. And she got it. Speaker 4 (16:23) I, yeah. You had to cut a wig. Speaker 1 (16:26) It Speaker 4 (16:26) sucks. Yeah, I can only imagine. So Heather says. Don't ask me how I know. Speaker 3 (16:33) I Speaker 4 (16:34) was going to keep it pushing. I really was. Heather says, I think on some level. Emily would understand the fears we have because my fear is like not really anybody publicly. My fear, like my husband, my kids, like those are the people I care about. Those are the people that I want to protect. But like, did we feel like there was a lack of understanding? I feel like people are making Emily much deeper than what like is actually happening. I feel like, like you said, like she's, she speaks very plainly. But I don't ever feel like she's being harsh. I just feel like maybe, I don't know, like, is Church Girl being too protective of her group? And like, what's the paranoia? Like, why are we
