Speaker 3 (0:04) $1000 on shoes? What's the matter Morty? Tomorrow? What's this thing? Great Speaker 1 (0:10) gown. Beautiful gown. Fashion Speaker 4 (0:18) has changed! Speaker 3 (0:23) Hi, I'm Lauren Garoni. And I'm Chelsea Fairless. And welcome Speaker 4 (0:27) back to the Every Outfit podcast. Shall we start with some Sarah Jessica Parker news? Absolutely. So this week, there were a couple noteworthy developments. First of all, the sequel to The Family Stone. Was formally announced? Speaker 3 (0:45) Yes, technically it was announced. There is no other information other than people, of course, have been asking for a Family Stone sequel for a very long time. Obviously, it feels even more poignant now that Diane Keen has passed away. But we thought that the sequel was going to be the Family Stone 2 colon, you know, insert pithy title, Boxing Day. Speaker 3 (1:12) That's actually pretty good. Yeah. Family Stone to Boxing Day. But no, it will be the family's stone. Speaker 4 (1:21) I have to say the family's stone doesn't exactly roll off the tongue. No, and when Speaker 3 (1:27) you sent me this video announcing that the sequel was happening, the main cast was coming back, minus Diane Keaton, of course, I thought that this was fan created. I did not realize that this was an official graphic created by the studio Searchlight. I Speaker 4 (1:43) know. What it looks like is a graphic promoting a like... live reading of The Family Stone on Zoom during the pandemic. Like, that kind of vibe. Right. Speaker 3 (1:54) And it took me a good five minutes to realize it's supposed to mimic a Christmas tree. It is all these actor press shots, which, I mean, I could spend 15 minutes discussing the different actors' headshots, but we have other things to get to. All Speaker 4 (2:12) the actors' headshots are supposed to be within this tree. They're forming the tree. But the hierarchy of information is psychotic. Like at the top of the tree, it's Craig T. Nelson. It's Rachel McAdams. Yes. And then underneath Speaker 3 (2:27) you have Dermot Mulroney, Speaker 4 (2:28) Claire Speaker 3 (2:29) Danes, Speaker 4 (2:29) Luke Wilson. Then on the third tier? Sarah Jessica Parker is on the third tier with the Who-iest cast members. Yes. Speaker 3 (2:39) The other stone sister. her husband, the deaf brother, Speaker 4 (2:44) and his husband. Wait, is it even the other sister's husband, or is that Rachel McAdams' love interest? Speaker 3 (2:53) Oh, yes, that we see briefly towards the end of the film. You might be correct. I do not remember the other Stone sister's husband, because his entire role was like, he's working until Christmas Day. Yeah. I just want to let the fuckettes know that you sent me a reordered version of the tree and you were like, look, this actually makes more Speaker 4 (3:14) sense. Well, I thought it was wrong to put the deaf gay guy at the bottom of the tree by himself, for one thing. And Speaker 3 (3:20) also, in this order, other than Dermot Mulroney and Claire Speaker 4 (3:24) Danes, you don't really get a sense of who is with who. Totally. Also, I firmly believe that Craig T. Nelson belongs at the bottom of the tree as he is the trunk symbolically holding up the family. We Speaker 3 (3:38) literally have no other details about this film other than it is coming soon, although reportedly the plot will center around the holidays once again and allegedly Craig T. Nelson bringing a Speaker 4 (3:50) woman home for the holidays. When you think about it, the family stone makes more sense now. Because tensions are at an all-time high within families right now, you know, like what if Craig T. Nelson's girlfriend is like a little bit conservative, you know? The worst thing you could do. In the Stone family, yes. Well, Speaker 3 (4:10) yeah, it's going to be one of two things. It's either his girlfriend is Mary Steenburgen and she's a little bit MAGA, or it's Sidney Sweeney, who's also a little bit MAGA. Like Speaker 4 (4:20) there's no in-between. Right. It's someone inappropriately young or someone... that is just completely out of sync with the values of the family. Can Speaker 3 (4:30) we go back to the title? Because the family's stone indicates that there are multiple stones now within this family, which to me says beyond Dermot Mulroney marrying Claire Danes, do we think Luke Wilson and Sarah Jessica Parker have married? Because I refuse Speaker 4 (4:47) to believe this. Of course they married. Speaker 3 (4:50) That bond when, you know, you remind him of your third grade teacher. I'm sure they've all had kids. Ah, yes. There's a new generation of Speaker 4 (4:58) Stones. The gay couple probably has like five kids now. This is going to be the thing, isn't Speaker 3 (5:05) it? Where it's like Sarah Jessica Parker's character has acclimated to the Stone family. And now there's going to be a new version of Sarah Jessica Parker's character in Craig T. Nelson's girlfriend who's constantly sticking her foot in Speaker 4 (5:17) her mouth. We'll see. But we don't really know when we'll see, because when is this coming out? We have no idea. It is just coming soon, Speaker 3 (5:25) as they said. I don't even think they've started filming. If anything, this is just a cast announcement, which is utterly bizarre when it's all the same cast members that were in the first film. Speaker 4 (5:35) Yes, plus Rachel McAdams' boyfriend being upgraded slightly. I Speaker 3 (5:40) guess so. On the same tier as Sarah Jessica Parker, which I guess we're supposed to be excited that we're getting a sequel to The Family Stone, but... I'm more concerned because of Sarah Jessica Parker's placement at the third row that like maybe she's been demoted. Like maybe she's just going to pop in. Maybe she's has as much screen time as Rachel McAdams love interest. That's a horrible thing to say. It's not what I want. I'm just commenting on what this graphic design makes me think. I Speaker 4 (6:07) guess Rachel McAdams is on the top of the tree because she is the biggest star at this point. But Craig T. Nelson as well? That's what doesn't make sense. None of it makes sense. No one put any thought into this. And that's the reality. Also, Speaker 3 (6:20) a Saturday morning announcement? Speaker 4 (6:22) Okay, moving on. There's even more Sarah Jessica Parker news. We got a very unexpected promo for Oh Mary, the Cola Scola play, which is coming to HBO Max, blessedly, sometime in 2027. And Cole Speaker 3 (6:39) was welcomed into the HBO Max family by none other than Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon. When Speaker 4 (6:47) that first came up in my feed, I was just like, oh my God. is Cynthia Nixon going into O'Mary was my first thought because I saw that it was cross-posted across many of their Instagram accounts. I Speaker 3 (6:59) know. I too thought it was a cast announcement for O'Mary, but instead O'Mary is coming to HBO Max, which my question is, I assume this is a filmed version of the stage show where Cole will be reprising their role as Mary Todd Lincoln? Yeah, I'm sure it's the whole Speaker 4 (7:17) original cast. Speaker 3 (7:18) Okay, so... What I couldn't figure out is, were Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon in this ad because they love O'Mary so much or because of their blood oath with HBO Max? Speaker 4 (7:31) Because they love O'Mary so much. Someone thought of this idea, which is quite a cute idea. I love the idea that Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon are the people that are physically working at the HBO offices. I think they decided to do it because they support theater. They love that shit. They love Cole. They want to support the play. I don't think this was an HBO thing. I don't think they got paid. I think they got their glam taken care of and that was it. Speaker 3 (8:00) Well, yes, it's very clear that they showed up for 30 minutes and then left because Sarah Jessica Parker wears the Carrie Bradshaw, Vivian Westwood suit that she wore in A Vogue Idea, but with the cameo brooch. Of course, can't forget that. But when I was re-watching this commercial, I stopped at a random point and I realized in a reverse shot of Cole walking down a hallway, you see the back of Sarah Jessica Parker's outfit and she's not wearing the matching skirt. She's wearing like a Liberty Print miniskirt. Not even a miniskirt. I think it is a maxi skirt. Oh, really? It's giving the lady. The Speaker 4 (8:43) woman. The Speaker 3 (8:43) woman. It's giving the woman. Okay, look. You know what it's giving? It's giving Sarah Jessica Parker showed up in her street clothes and was like, you have me for 35 minutes. I'm putting the Carrie Bradshaw Vogue idea blazer on. I will not be putting on Speaker 4 (9:00) the magic skirt. Yeah. It's interesting because she chose to wear this particular garment. At first, we're not sure if she's supposed to be Carrie or not, or if she's supposed to be Sarah Jessica Parker. But then Cynthia Nixon was in like normal Cynthia Nixon clothes. Or could be Miranda and just like that clothes, I suppose. through a certain lens, but I didn't get the sense that she was in character. Speaker 3 (9:23) No, because then we get into some reality-breaking questions where Carrie Bradshaw and Miranda are just in some time loop within the HBO Max building where they can never Speaker 4 (9:34) leave, I guess. I thought it was cute, though. I like that they did that. Of course. It was very, like, SNL or something. It was perfect. It was a nice little, mm, a little taste. Give us something. Speaker 3 (9:49) Did you know creatine is one of the most research and effective supplements available? But as the category has exploded, most brands have focused on flavors, formats, and marketing instead of actually making the creatine itself better. That's why Momentous created Signature Spec Creatine, their most advanced creatine ever, setting a new standard Speaker 4 (10:07) for creatine quality. I'm also here because while this may surprise our audience, I have recently re-embarked on a fitness journey and I've discovered the importance of creatine. Did you know that creatine isn't just for building muscle? muscle. Creatine is even more essential for women who naturally store about 70 to 80 % less creatine than men, which means consistent supplementation can have an even greater impact on energy, recovery, and focus, which means I'm not so haggard after my spin class. Momentous Signature Spec Creatine is one of the Speaker 3 (10:37) only creatines to be manufactured in a pharmaceutical facility using reverse osmosis, water purification, and verified through an expanded six-stage testing process with four independent agencies. And that means Momentous Creatine delivers 10 times fewer impurities, two to five times tighter heavy metal limits, PFAS, Speaker 4 (10:55) and microplastic screenings. I don't know about any of that, but I do know that the Signature Spec Creatine is an ultra-fine powder that mixes effortlessly with no grit or clumping. I Speaker 3 (11:05) was taking Momentous' Creatine Choose, but have switched to their new Signature Spec Creatine. I take it first thing in the morning with eight ounces of water. In less than five minutes, I'm hydrated and I've supported my cognitive and muscle performance Speaker 4 (11:17) all before my morning coffee. The benefits of creatine are real. It supports strength, power, lean muscle growth, recovery, and even improved cognitive performance. So if you're going to take creatine every day, make sure it's the best. Speaker 3 (11:52) Yes, we will talk about the Emmys, but honestly, what I find more pressing is talking about Practical Magic 2. And you and I both saw it separately. We have not talked about our experience or our feelings about this Speaker 4 (12:07) film. Okay, here's the thing. I did enjoy watching it. I wasn't bored and I didn't feel rage bubbling up inside me to the same degree that I did when I watched The Devil Wears Prada 2. I think if you're someone that likes the first movie but also has extremely low standards and you're compulsively watching bad limited series, you could do worse than Practical Magic 2. Interesting. That said, I have some Speaker 3 (12:37) thoughts. Okay, I just want to bring to your attention before we start talking shit about the plot, because while I was watching this film and I was like, why is this happening? Why is this happening? I was like, wait, is Practical Magic 2 based on Alice Hoffman's books? Alice Hoffman wrote the original Practical Magic and has subsequently wrote multiple sequels and prequels to the story of the Owen sisters. And the answer is yes. The plot of this movie is heavily based on the 2021 sequel book, The Book of Magic. Speaker 4 (13:10) Okay. Speaker 3 (13:11) Having said that, this movie does honor the source material in its plot, but I guess my big question is... Okay, there's source material, but shouldn't you also honor the things that people love about the original Practical Magic film? And that to me are these pairs of sisters living in that Victorian Speaker 4 (13:32) mansion on the Massachusetts coast. I know. All of these sequels and these reboots, they just remind me that you can never go home again. And that is literally true in Practical Magic. This house is so wildly different from the original house. They tried to recreate it, but something happened. Something didn't Speaker 3 (13:49) work. I didn't even have time to wonder if the house looked different because we spend so little time in it. The majority of this movie is spent in either the English countryside or in Boston. Chelsea. No, I know. There are so many establishing shots of Boston that I thought I had accidentally walked into a Ben Affleck film. Speaker 4 (14:14) I know, it's really strange that they don't understand that the good thing about practical magic was the relationship between the sisters, but also the world building with this town. Do Speaker 3 (14:27) not even get me started. Because when this sequel was announced, we had wondered, like, what happened to Sandra Bullock's lotion line? I know, this bitch literally started Speaker 4 (14:40) the Flamingo estate in the 90s. Speaker 3 (14:43) And now she works at the library? She's a librarian. I mean, I guess spoilers for this film, but it truly feels like if you've not seen Practical Magic in the first week it was out, like, you're never gonna see it. Speaker 4 (14:57) This is a movie for the heads and the heads only. Well, I don't think that anything that we say could really spoil this movie also. Like if the spoiler is that she works at the library and not at her very own Kiehl's store. So Speaker 3 (15:11) this is why I had to see if the sequel was based on a book or they just went rogue with the sequel plot because the movie begins with like, hey, you know where we left things off in the first film where Sandra Bullock fell in love with Aiden Quinn? Guess what? He's dead. Guess what? That curse, the whole plot of the first film where it's like they overcame this ancestral love Speaker 4 (15:35) curse. Speaker 3 (15:36) Actually, Speaker 4 (15:36) they didn't. I know, I can't believe they still have the same problem in this practical magic. Which Speaker 3 (15:43) I will say the de-aging of them, I mean, they look ageless in this film, but in the beginning- Talk about practical Speaker 4 (15:50) magic. Speaker 3 (15:50) Yeah, but there is a little bit of de-aging in the beginning of the film when it's showing a past sequence. And also the styling of them, I was like, this is pretty legit. Yeah. Speaker 4 (16:02) And then Sandra Bullock makes Nicole Kidman promise, you will never tell my daughters that they are witches. Bitch, they know they're witches. They were old enough in the first film to know that they're witches. Okay, well, that's also the other logic gap. Speaker 3 (16:15) But before we dive into the recasting of Sandra Bullock's daughters and their ages, that doesn't stop the love curse. Wouldn't that help your daughter to be like, hey, look, we're witches. We can't fall in love. The men that we fall in love with die. Speaker 4 (16:29) Yes, useful information for these girls to know. Speaker 3 (16:32) Okay, these girls were, I mean, I am Evan Rachel Wood's age. I am in my late 30s. We would have been 10, 11 in the first film. Let's say that the other daughter was eight. Doesn't matter. Math, not my strong suit. Here's what I know, Chelsea. They would be in their late 20s to early 30s at the very least. These women are in college Speaker 4 (16:54) slash med school? I know, like Evan Rachel Wood is literally playing the mother of a 17-year-old on the shards right now. Speaker 3 (17:04) So Evan Rachel Wood's character has been recast as Joey King, who I assume got this role because she was the daughter of Nicole Kidman in that other film about a married older woman dating a younger guy. The like knockoff version of that Anne Hathaway Harry Styles fanfic film. Right, the one Speaker 4 (17:24) with Zach. Efron? Yes. Yes. Speaker 3 (17:27) That's how I think Joey King came to be cast in this movie. Right. Here's the other thing. Fine. There is a thing with legacy sequels, which thankfully The Devil Wears Prada didn't do, which is a focus on the younger generation. Okay. Again, that's not really what we come to Practical Magic for, but if you're going to do that, this film is about a man completely. This is all about a man. Speaker 3 (17:55) Joey King's boyfriend that we meet for a scene who is nobody. Like, at least with, in the first film, they cast Goran Vizhnik. Like, such a hot man that I'm sure even you, Chelsea, were like, yeah, I get it. Yeah, Speaker 4 (18:12) and they had that great Faith Hill needle drop and the whole thing was great. I don't care about this man either and whether or not he gets out of this coma. Speaker 3 (18:20) Okay. So, the Beatle death song. Speaker 3 (18:25) That we learn about from the first film. I don't know if it's a song. It's just like the beetle making beetle noises. The beetle death rattle, which evidently just also comes for you if you're going to die too. Speaker 4 (18:38) Yeah, I was confused by that. I was like, that's new lore. Like this has nothing to do with the curse. Here's Speaker 3 (18:45) my other question about the logic of this, where it's like, you cannot tell a man you love him because he will die. And it's like, okay, but... If that were the case, then like the Owens women, their bloodline wouldn't continue. I'm sure they could just fuck men and have babies. But it's like in the first film, you told me that Sandra Bullock fell madly in love with a man, had two children with him who were eight to ten years old, and then the curse took him. I don't know with like every generation there's like a quickening or something. But Joey King tells this rando that we've met for literally five seconds that she loves him and then he's hit by a car the next day. Speaker 4 (19:25) And he doesn't die. Oh, God. Also, to go back to the setting, it's horrible that so much of this is set in Boston and England. I don't know why they didn't expand. upon the world of the town. The only place we ever go to is the hospital, which looks like a normal hospital. Because it's in Boston. It's not even in a beautiful coastal town. Like in the show Ratchet, the dearly departed Ryan Murphy series, the mental institution was designed in a Dorothy Draper style. Like we can make some heightened choices like that with practical magic. I don't want to go to England. Bitch, take me to the lighthouse in that town. Like, let's go to a coffee shop. Speaker 3 (20:14) Fall feels like the perfect time for a reset. New routines, better habits, and a little more attention to the things you may have put off over the summer. Speaker 3 (21:42) Also, can we get into the product placement in this film? Because I did find it especially egregious. And it begins with when Nicole Kidman arrives for Diane Weiss' birthday. And they're like, we're going to make margaritas, which the whole promo tour of this film. was centered around margaritas in a way of like, yeah, guys, I mean, that scene is fun, but you are pushing margaritas in a way that it makes anyone who's never seen Practical Magic think that this is a film about, I don't know, a Mexican restaurant in a fun coastal town or something. That margaritas thing was a scene. Speaker 4 (22:22) Yeah. Speaker 3 (22:22) Okay, Nicole Kidman takes out, she's like, no, Sandra Bullock, we're not going to make margaritas in our old-timey blender when I have this ninja slushie Speaker 4 (22:32) machine. Well, the strength of the original Midnight Margarita scene was that they were all having fun. Like, it was like this intergenerational kiki that was happening. Everyone got super loose. And it was a great vibe. There weren't scenes like that in this movie where these women are having fun together. The closest thing is Diane Wiest's... birthday party, which quickly takes a turn. Even beyond that, if you want Speaker 3 (22:59) to talk about the differences from films from the late 90s and 2000s that were not particularly good, which over the weekend was a hilarious conversation on the internet of people talking about how bad the score on Rotten Tomatoes was, which I guess is technically higher than the Rotten Tomatoes reviews of the first film. But I mean, Practical Magic is a decent film. Is it on the same level as I don't know. The English Patient? Probably not, Speaker 4 (23:27) but like it's a vibe movie. I much prefer this film to The English Patient. But Speaker 3 (23:32) that's what I'm saying. This movie is fun. However, even a mid-level film from the late 90s or early 2000s, what you're talking about with that margarita scene, you know what also happened? It was fun. It was a vibe and we learned crucial details of the plot through this scene. This movie is two hours and ten minutes and like Speaker 4 (23:51) nothing happens. The original Practical Magic was a multi-sensory experience. It was the world of the house and the town and the apothecary store. The aesthetic of magic and all of the little potions and the greenhouse and all of that stuff. It was the music. It was the Lilith Fair ass soundtrack that it had. It was the clothes, the 90s slip dresses, the... burnout velvet, the knitwear. Like it was like, it hit you on every single front and it was so specific. The look, the feel of it. And Speaker 3 (24:30) this film, you have Maisie Williams wearing fig scrubs through three-fourths of the movie. Speaker 4 (24:35) Okay, you know what my version of the fig scrubs were? Those goddamn millennial suitcases that got so much screen time. Speaker 3 (24:43) Oh yeah, no, I wrote a whole thing. We just went off track. Yeah, I counted the ninja slushie machine and then let's take our away luggage to England where we'll take an American Airlines flight to get there. Speaker 4 (24:57) It wasn't even away luggage though. Was it not? Was it bays? I don't think it was bays either. I think it was something that spawned off like it was like third removed. Speaker 3 (25:08) Okay. We're here for a legacy sequel. We of course saw it opening weekend. However, they are completely different characters. Like the Sandra Bullock from Ms. Congeniality somehow got transported into Speaker 4 (25:22) Practical Magic 2. I know. And Nicole Kidman went from being
