Speaker 2 (0:06) This is Crime House. Speaker 1 (0:08) This friend told me that my partner had been collecting slugs from the garden on the fruit that he has been putting out there and then putting these slugs in my food, blending them up. He even sent this friend who was telling me this pictures of a bag of slugs he had collected and a picture of those slugs then blended. Speaker 1 (0:34) Welcome back to Crimes of Reddit. I'm Sabrina DeAnaroga. I'm Alexis Linkletter. And every Speaker 2 (0:40) week we're going down Reddit's deepest rabbit holes to uncover the most disturbing and bizarre stories posted by the people who actually lived Speaker 1 (0:47) them. And I'm so excited for today's topic because I have three Reddit stories all about shocking discoveries of crimes committed by partners, which was a dangerous one to do for someone entering the dating world. Or someone who's been Speaker 2 (1:02) in the dating world. Or been in several relationships, which we both have. I mean, I'm sure there's going to be some triggering moments here. Speaker 1 (1:09) And also there are some moments where it's like they've been together for a very, very, very long time and there's a reveal about a partner. So it's like even if you're in a happily committed relationship, this is so doomsday of me, but you never know who you're dating. You never know who you're sleeping next to. You never know. So never let your guard down. Dump your boyfriend. I'm just kidding. Maybe, though. Be single forever. I'm excited about these stories and these horrors. These three stories are true crime relationship stories. And there are no murders in these stories, thankfully. Okay. But they are about the worst partners imaginable. So grab your drink, because that's what we're doing, and get ready for some horrifying dating stories. Buckle up, buttercup. Okay, let's start with the first story, though. Okay. This is titled My Wife. So the OP is 36 male, wife 33 female. My wife was sued. I'm feeling resentment towards her, and I don't know how to move past it. Alrighty. Are you ready? Yeah. Okay. This is not a post asking for any legal or financial advice. We already have a lawyer and have help financially. No offense to Reddit, but I'd rather not get any legal advice from a forum. But I am okay with getting relationship advice, it seems. As the title states, my wife was recently sued. She lost and we had to pay. The money is a significant amount for us and we didn't have much in savings or emergency fund to begin with. And both of those accounts are now empty. But my current problem is trying to move past the resentment and anger I'm feeling towards my wife. Until now, I've always felt like we were a partnership in our marriage. But since I'm the breadwinner, I can't help but feel like I'm spending my money on something that isn't my fault. I've had no problem paying the mortgage and taking care of various financial burdens that come with being a married homeowner. However, I have been the only one to put money aside in our savings and other accounts to prepare for an emergency. I thought an emergency would be like a totaled car or someone losing their job, medical bills, or an act of God. Not a stupid lawsuit where I know my wife is guilty. She has a part-time job and doesn't make much money, but pays for smaller things when she can, like groceries and some random bills. But she does take care of a lot of cooking, cleaning, and caring for our pets. What did my wife do? Note, I had no idea this was happening. while it was going on. What a buildup. I mean, get to it, buddy. Oh, no, but it's worth Speaker 2 (3:56) the Speaker 1 (3:57) buildup. Let me tell you. And this is one of those stories where you think you know someone, you've been with them for a very, very long time, but you don't. Okay, my wife used LinkedIn to find her former ex-best friend. She ended up creating a realistic-looking fake LinkedIn profile with a vague occupation of a recruiter. My wife ended up sending this ex-best friend, who we'll call Laura, a few messages pretending to be a recruiter in her line of work. Laura finally responded thinking that this recruiter was real. My wife wanted her phone number, but Laura ended up giving her a personal email address instead. So my wife created a second fake LinkedIn profile and started to send messages to people with similar titles as Laura at her company. These messages said derogatory things about Laura, a mixture of truthful but embarrassing things, and also fabricated bullshit to make Laura look bad. Laura's manager got one of these messages that claimed that Laura was a heavy drug user. And Laura's manager talked to her about these messages, and he felt like the messages were bizarre and seemed like someone was trying to troll or harass Laura. which is lucky that she has a manager like that. Well, which Speaker 2 (5:05) was exactly what was happening, evidently. It gets worse. Yeah. Speaker 1 (5:10) Laura's team had her back and helped her save these messages. And not only that, but Laura requested that she be drug tested anyway to provide further evidence that she was clean. My wife didn't know this at this point, but Laura was also pregnant. Several of her co-workers, including her manager, testified on Laura's behalf. Using this personal email address that she got from the fake recruiter profile, my wife was able to find a few social media platforms that Laura was on and able to figure out Laura's husband's name. She did more internet sleuthing and then found Laura's husband on Facebook. Laura's husband didn't have much on his Facebook profile, but you could see his business email address on it, and so my wife sent him an email claiming that Laura was cheating on him. The husband confronted Laura about this email, and Laura encouraged him to keep responding to this person and save messages, as well as to start asking specific questions about this supposed affair. My wife thought she was being clever. She ended up telling the husband that Laura was cheating on him during the work week, even gave him specific dates. But what she didn't realize was that Laura had something turned on in Google Maps where it keeps a year's worth of historical GPS data. So some of the dates that my wife had given her husband happened to be days where they were both working from home, and she also ended up giving him dates during a time they were on vacation together. Laura had her husband continue to respond as much as possible to my wife to back up all correspondence. Then when my wife learned Laura was pregnant, she found out where and when the baby shower was going to be. One of Laura's friends had created a public registry for her and had the invitation online. My wife decided to show up. unannounced to the baby shower, which was taking place in a semi-public place, and they had rented out an area connected to the public business. Keep in mind, OP has no idea any of this is going on as it's going on. Speaker 2 (6:58) It's so disturbing. And now you could see why the target of this obsession is the ex-best friend. I mean, I can only imagine how the friendship was when it was going on. I know. Speaker 1 (7:09) And we do get more context on that. Okay. Can we? My wife did not make herself known immediately at the baby shower. Instead, she started looking for patrons that were entering and exiting the rented out room. She was able to get the attention of a few guests that had never met her, and she started gossiping about Laura. And my wife was telling people that Laura didn't actually know who the father of the baby was, among other things. And this was an event that her husband was at as well. So then word got back to Laura, and Laura spotted my wife and apparently immediately put all the pieces together of what had been happening. I'm leaving a fair amount of information out. My wife was able to find phone numbers, social media accounts, and emails for other people in Laura's circle and sent them messages about Laura on multiple occasions. All of the messages were trying to paint Laura in an extremely derogatory light, and all of the events that I mentioned so far took place over a year or so. My wife didn't think to mask her IP address, so it was pretty easy to find out that all these made-up messages came from the same IP address, which was ours. Many of Laura's friends and family testified on her behalf, and Laura had everyone save as much digital evidence as possible, which was a lot. So once Laura put it all together, her and her husband hired a lawyer and decided to sue my wife. They had ample evidence against her, all the saved messages, close friends, and even her manager spoke on her behalf. She showed that she went to see a therapist once all the harassment started because she was depressed and anxious, which of course, yeah, Speaker 2 (8:35) like Speaker 1 (8:35) someone was trying to destroy her life. Speaker 2 (8:37) Especially messing with her work, like messing with your livelihood is terrifying. Yeah. Yeah. Speaker 1 (8:45) She showed that she and her husband went to counseling after the accusations of her cheating because even though she wasn't cheating and they can prove it was someone messing with her, that plants seed of doubt in relationships that sometimes it's hard to like come back from. 100%. It's so sad. Laura even went above and beyond, had more drug tests done to show that she was clean and to prove that my wife's accusations were 100 % false. She even had a paternity test done to show that my wife was again wrong and choosing to lie. I honestly feel awful for Laura. There were lots of tears on her end, and you could tell how much emotional stress she had gone through. She said that being pregnant during the majority of this was absolutely horrific, and she was worried the stress and anxiety would somehow hurt her baby. She was pained that her one and only baby shower was ruined by my wife, and that was something that could never truly be repaired or made up for, and that my wife's harassment continued even after Laura gave birth and was trying to manage a newborn child. My wife has never done anything this crazy before. I knew she could be a little petty and jealous of others, especially people she used to be friends with in the past, but it was only talk, no action. We've otherwise had a very happy marriage. We rarely fight. We have a lot in common. We have a lot of fun together, but she really fucked up this time. I don't know how to move forward. I know someone is going to suggest therapy, but I really want to start building up an emergency fund again because we're really pretty screwed financially for a while. Speaker 2 (10:09) It's so fascinating to me that the financial focus is where they end because that is not the biggest problem they're dealing with here. I mean, this kind of behavior Speaker 1 (10:19) is so disturbing. So disturbing. But here's what I think, because even in the comments it agrees with this. Like a lot of people are like, I think the bigger issue is not the financial problem. But if she's doing this to someone who used to be her best friend. What would she do to the original poster if they were to get divorced? Speaker 2 (10:40) 100%. That's the thing. It's like people are either capable of this kind of thing or they're not. They're capable of living this kind of double life where they're messing with somebody. I mean, there are a lot of famous cases like this. Like, are you familiar with the Luca Magnotta case? It's like the don't fuck with cats case. Oh, yeah. Okay. Where it's like they can live these like. diabolical internet lives where they're juggling like multiple sock puppet accounts and they're juggling a bunch of usernames to harass and stalk people. And it's like, you're either capable and willing to do that or you're not. And she is. Well, Speaker 1 (11:15) and also the OP is talking about financially struggling. The amount of energy that their wife is putting into this harassment. Yeah. Think about how much she could get done. Yeah, she could get a job. How productive could she be? Yeah. She could make so much money. Seriously. Put that energy into like, I don't know, knitting. Whatever. Make an Etsy account. Something. Speaker 2 (11:39) Ceramics? Speaker 1 (11:40) Anything. Yeah. It's Speaker 2 (11:42) just really evil to try to come at somebody's life in that way and to try to hurt them in that way. And it really is like psychological terrorism. So Speaker 1 (11:50) one of the big questions that commenters were asking was what happened between his wife and Laura for her to feel this angry. And we do get an answer about it, but I don't think any betrayal would warrant this in my mind. Well, Speaker 2 (12:05) and I don't think she's angry. I think she's obsessed and fixated. And I think there's some other element here because like, that's not what angry people do. That's something else. Yeah. Speaker 1 (12:16) So I'll read a couple of comments and then we'll go to the updates. So one comment is that is absolutely not normal. Your wife clearly has some serious issues that I think you and she obviously need to start addressing. That level of harassment and the duration of it is frankly terrifying. And I feel like you should be concentrating on dealing with that rather than just the financial fallout, which is kind of what you said. Yeah, there's much bigger issues here. But I do understand how that would be scary. All of your life savings is just gone. Just from a practical standpoint. It's Speaker 2 (12:45) like you have to pay your bills and keep a roof over your head. That I understand. That's stressful. Also, Speaker 1 (12:49) I'd rather focus on that because it feels like something you can fix where focusing on the just horror of the relationship is too scary. Well, his wife's dangerous. Yeah. Speaker 2 (13:01) That's dangerous. And losing your house or not being able to pay your bills, that's stressful. Speaker 1 (13:06) Yes. You know, but that's not dangerous in the same way. And then so one of the other comments was. Homeboy thinks this is just one occurrence. It wasn't. This was hundreds or thousands of vindictive actions over months or years. They said that she belongs in jail and that OP needs to grow a spine and divorce his wife. Nowhere in his post does he mention that she feels any remorse for her actions. Okay, so here are the updates. There are some common questions I wanted to address to provide additional clarification. So the first question that the OP is responding to is, how did she avoid jail? I only mentioned the civil case since I felt that was the most appropriate to write about because I was originally angry about our financial situation. But there was also a criminal case. Our lawyer thought she would originally have to go to jail for three months. However, we were able to get her punishment to be resolved by community service instead. She has a lot of community service hours to complete within a year, which is good. I feel like she needs to stay busy. Yeah. She will also be getting visits from a parole officer. Laura and her husband did file restraining orders against her. I honestly can't blame them for that. It helped my wife that she had a clean record and has a family that works in law enforcement. That helps a lot. I want her to finish those community service hours before we talk about her working more hours to help pay me back. Then the next question, this was like the biggest one that I had, is why did she do this to Laura? That's a good question. I have asked her this multiple times over the
