Speaker 3 (0:02) Hi, my name is Andy Daly, and I feel at peace about being Conan O'Brien's friend. Well, I got news for you. You shouldn't be. Really? Because I'm going to Speaker 4 (0:12) rock your world today. You're going to leave here a shell. Yeah, I know. I already feel that. Speaker 5 (0:38) Hey Speaker 4 (0:38) there, welcome to Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend. Sona is not with us today. She's on an extended vacation. I think it's gone on quite a long time, but she's in Hawaii. She's having a great time. Of course, not me here holding down the fort while she gallivants and probably promotes her new book, which she'll be talking about soon here on the podcast. But I am sitting here with Matt Gourley. No vacation for you. Yeah. You can't go on vacation. Why not? Well, because you have a newborn. Yeah. Well, pretty newborn. Yeah. Six months now? Almost six months. Oh, by the time this comes out, six months. Okay. Yeah. And we will Speaker 5 (1:11) have already gone on vacation by the time this comes out. Now, where do you go? Speaker 4 (1:15) Sona went to Hawaii. Where are you going to go? Speaker 5 (1:16) We're going to Carpinteria, which- Speaker 2 (1:18) Beautiful. Speaker 4 (1:19) Carpinteria, California. I spend a lot of time up there. I love it. I love it Speaker 5 (1:22) too. Speaker 4 (1:22) Beautiful place. It is gorgeous. Wonderful people. Chill vibe. Yeah. David, you're never to go on- I bet. David Hopping is filling in for Sona. David, you were never to go on vacation. You know that it's in your contract. I don't know why I didn't read the contract. Where would you go? Well, Speaker 3 (1:37) you Speaker 4 (1:37) can't read, David. That's one of the reasons. I Speaker 3 (1:39) knew I should have learned. Yeah. It's Speaker 4 (1:42) still time. Yeah. And I've been all over the place, traveling a lot. The Mick Jagger interview, which was just such a bucket list thing for me, came out a couple of weeks ago. And I was so happy about that. And I went to London for that because when one has a chance to. interview Mick Jagger, you go to the mountain. You go to Mick Jagger. And so I went there and I was really envying one thing about London. What's that? I was walking around and I was noticing that people dress like adults. And, you know, people are wearing jackets and it was starting to heat up a little bit. It wasn't too hot yet. But I've been to London and other times of the year where it's chilly, it's crisp air, people wearing pea coats. People are dressed like, you know, James Bond in a James Bond movie. The guys dress up. The women look great. People are wearing clothing. We Speaker 5 (2:37) align on this. Yes. And then Speaker 4 (2:38) I come back to L.A. And I'm going to say it right now. I'm looking around the room, looking at you. First of all, you look like your mom just dressed you for summer camp. I'm wearing a T-shirt. You have a Speaker 5 (2:49) Han Solo jacket on. Yeah. Speaker 4 (2:51) Yeah. At least I have that. No, I'm trying to put on some kind of clothes because I don't want to just walk around. I mean, here you could bump into I don't care what station of life they're in. Everybody is just wearing jeans. and a t-shirt and big puffy sneakers and then you ask them you don't even what are Speaker 5 (3:13) you Speaker 3 (3:14) wearing big Speaker 5 (3:14) puffy sneakers i don't want to bring them up here they're too big first of all okay but sneakers Speaker 4 (3:18) in general and i just think i don't want to spend my days like this and so i'm starting to think that maybe i should just start wearing suits around but then it just looks ridiculous too Speaker 5 (3:30) hot it's not just the heat it's something else i'm Speaker 4 (3:33) saying Speaker 5 (3:33) it just but that even if you forget it forget Speaker 4 (3:35) the heat forget the heat for a second, because yes, it's going to be hot for a couple of months in the summer, but most of the year Speaker 5 (3:42) it's, you know, Speaker 4 (3:44) 72 degrees here. You can wear a light suit, can't you? Why aren't we doing that? Why aren't we dressing like adults? Whoa. Why are we perpetual Speaker 3 (3:52) children? I feel like I act like a Speaker 4 (3:54) child because I'm dressed Speaker 5 (3:55) like a child. Wait Speaker 4 (3:57) a minute. In New York, I acted like a child as well. Okay. Scratch that. But I do want to start wearing a peacoat. And I want to walk around and I want to meet people for a gin cocktail. Oh, this sounds so good. You Speaker 5 (4:11) know, at Speaker 4 (4:11) like five o'clock in the afternoon. Right? Speaker 5 (4:14) That's all I want Speaker 4 (4:15) to Speaker 5 (4:15) do. Speaker 4 (4:15) Well, you're an Anglophile. You like all this stuff. Yeah, yeah. Speaker 5 (4:18) I know. But don't Speaker 4 (4:19) you, I mean, I know you're a Bond fanatic. Wouldn't you like to dress a little better than you do? Speaker 5 (4:24) 100%. I want to wear a sweater any day of the week, but you can't here. You just can't. I get really irritable when I'm hot and I can't do it. So we're seeing you and you're not irritable? Hey, fuck Speaker 4 (4:35) you, man. Okay. All right. Well, I'm glad I get Mr. Sunshine here. I Speaker 2 (4:38) think if I could offer a different opinion about why people dress like they do in L.A., I think a lot of people in L.A. are very concerned about their appearance and they work out a lot. So I think they want to show off their hot bodies. Oh, really? Yes. I think that people are wearing a lot of tank tops. They're wearing a lot of shorts because they want to show off their glutes and their calves and their biceps. I'm Speaker 4 (5:00) not Speaker 2 (5:00) sure that's it. Speaker 4 (5:01) I will tell you this. When we, I did the show for many years in New York, Rockefeller Center with Jeff Ross. He wore a suit every day. And then we came out here and he was still the producer of our show. And the next thing I know, you know, he's wearing Geranimals, you know? Oh, Speaker 2 (5:14) Geranimals. Do you know what I mean? He's, you know, and he's got those sneakers that don't have Speaker 4 (5:19) laces Speaker 2 (5:20) that are cool. Speaker 4 (5:20) I knew Speaker 2 (5:20) you were going to bring those. Well, it just drove me Speaker 4 (5:22) crazy. You know what I mean? This guy fought in the Korean War. And I'm just wondering what the fuck happened. The minute we got here, he was here like 10 minutes and all adult clothing went away. And he was writing home letters to his parents saying we went on a canoe trip today. And I'm like, what happened to us? If Speaker 5 (5:41) you had it your way, would you be in a bowler hat? No, no, no, no, no, no, not a bowler hat, not an umbrella. A Speaker 4 (5:48) peat coat. And maybe some Speaker 5 (5:49) boots. Speaker 4 (5:50) Yeah. Or just, I mean, you can get a lighter suit. I just don't know what's wrong with me. I am, you know, of an age. I agree. I agree. And I think that sometimes the clothes inform your attitude. And maybe, you know, I'm a guy with grown children and I'm still walking around, you know, dressed like I work at a bowling alley. What are we doing? Well, you know, change Speaker 5 (6:15) starts with you. you Speaker 3 (6:16) know that's what they told me that class I took should we do like a team Coco like shopping trip where we all and then charge into the show and Jeff will get really crazy I think Speaker 4 (6:25) we should Speaker 3 (6:25) just remake Jeff Ross or Speaker 4 (6:28) should we just move to London this isn't about me I'm realizing now this is about Jeff Ross should we do like Speaker 5 (6:32) an extreme makeover Speaker 5 (6:34) I Speaker 4 (6:35) just think it's time that we started. You know, what happened to that? Why did we, you know, and, and Blay, I'm sorry, but you know, you say it's all about our bodies, but you don't have to wear a who farted t-shirt. Yeah. First of Speaker 2 (6:47) all, to Speaker 4 (6:47) defend myself here. Defend yourself. No one's attacking you. Go to Speaker 2 (6:51) youtube.com slash Team Coco and look at every rehearsal video you were in, which is you wore the same Guinness t-shirt for like 25 years. I Speaker 4 (6:59) know. Speaker 2 (6:59) I know. And you know what? That was Speaker 4 (7:00) just because I think Guinness is an amazing product. And if they want to send me some free Guinness, that's their business. I think farts are an amazing product. But whatever. That's not Speaker 2 (7:07) the reason I'm saying anything about Guinness. Farts are an amazing product. But can I just point out the fact, if you look at like all the billionaires, like look at Bezos. This guy's just wearing a t-shirt and like none of the rich. people in the world are dressed up. They're just wearing tees. That's my point. Tech bros are killing it. The tech bros are, so maybe everyone is dressed up like they want to be a tech bro. This Speaker 4 (7:27) makes me, and I think the tech bros, I have no problem with them having most of the world's money. and spending it eating bald eagles. That's their matter. That's their concern. You got to let the free market do its thing. OK, but when they walk around and they're wearing these gap T-shirts and short cargo shorts, I think they're letting the side down. Speaker 5 (7:48) The West has been casual Friday. Yes, the entire Western Speaker 4 (7:52) civilization has been casual Friday. And I think we need to pull it back. I agree. And maybe this starts to lead to better behavior. Maybe there'll be more consideration for others. Maybe people will start to have better manners. I mean, this might inform, and I'm not talking about, you know, you don't have to be, spend a lot of money to change the style of dress a little bit, you know? I mean, maybe people accuse me of being in a bubble, but I don't think a Prada suit could cost that much and everyone should have one. Just kidding. That was a fun joke for me. I enjoyed it. You see, I said I'm not in a bubble. And then what I did is reveal that I am in a bubble. But no, yes, play. Speaker 2 (8:32) I completely agree. I think, you know what? I think if you. I think if you look good, you feel good. Okay, that's crazy. I don't believe that at all. But this does have to Speaker 5 (8:41) start with you. If you want to see, you've got to be the change. You Speaker 3 (8:44) want Speaker 5 (8:44) to see the Speaker 3 (8:45) change. Speaker 4 (8:45) You have to be, and I'm glad you brought this up because I was talking to Oprah the other day. Speaker 4 (8:50) And she said, Conan, you need to be the change you want to see. And I said, okay, maybe I'll use that on the pod. Speaker 5 (8:56) So on a day like today where it's 90 degrees, you would wear a peacoat. You are focused about the weather. I'm just saying you can't do it if you want to do it. Yes, you Speaker 4 (9:05) can. You just sweat a lot. I'm that serious about it. I want to get a big. long tweed coat. I'll get him with this one that Doctor Who might wear. Oh, yay. Speaker 5 (9:16) I'm Speaker 4 (9:17) not Speaker 5 (9:17) a Doctor Who guy. Oh, wow. Speaker 4 (9:19) Discerning. I'm a discerning consumer of bullshittery. Speaker 2 (9:24) He traveled in a phone booth. Anyway, it's a TARDIS, dude. What's that? It's Speaker 4 (9:31) a Speaker 2 (9:31) TARDIS. It's not a phone booth. It's Speaker 4 (9:32) a Speaker 2 (9:32) TARDIS. Speaker 4 (9:33) Isn't that a phone booth? Clips to him. No, Speaker 2 (9:35) it looks like a phone Speaker 4 (9:37) booth. This is as angry as... It's bigger on Speaker 2 (9:39) the inside than the outside. You're as Speaker 4 (9:41) angry as someone would be in like a drive-by shooting. But because I misidentified the phone booth that the goofy science fiction doctor gets into. Enough. Please wrap. I'm Speaker 5 (9:51) going Speaker 4 (9:51) to wrap this up. Speaker 2 (9:53) He wears Speaker 5 (9:54) a Speaker 2 (9:54) suit, by the way. Doctor Who wears a suit. Interesting. What Speaker 4 (9:57) I need to do, I guess, is start dressing like I'm James Joyce. It's 1915. I live in Dublin and it's January. And I need to start doing that near the Mexican border. Okay. And I need to do that. I just need to own that, own that and do it. Yeah. And so I need to do it. Okay. And I will do it. Speaker 5 (10:16) Well, Speaker 4 (10:16) I Speaker 5 (10:16) look forward to that. Next time we record, you'd be coming in sweating. Yeah. Okay. I Speaker 4 (10:20) will. Speaker 5 (10:20) All Speaker 4 (10:21) right. Let's get into this. My guest today is an actor and comedian who hosts the Andy Daily Podcast Project, which is available exclusively on his Patreon. I'm going to need to make something clear. I think pound for pound, you can't be funnier than Andy Daly. I just adore the man, and he's been involved in so many of my projects over the years, and he's been in so many great iconic television series, and he makes me really happy. Thrilled he's here. Andy Daly, welcome. Speaker 4 (10:56) I'm going to start very quickly by telling you that. Speaker 3 (10:58) Here it comes. First Speaker 4 (11:00) of all, I was shocked when the Daily Show first came on. He sued the Daily Show. He said that they had stolen his name. Well, they Speaker 3 (11:06) did. And they put an I in it to make it Speaker 4 (11:09) sound like it's a show that's happening every day. It was a show that happened every day and still is. I thought that was one of the most craven things you've ever done. And he won. Because I said they don't really. He got $6 million. Yeah. And he's been pretty much living off of Speaker 5 (11:22) it. He's also sued like one day daily supplement. Yes. Brands and stuff like that. That's Speaker 3 (11:27) right. Speaker 5 (11:27) Most supplement brands Speaker 4 (11:28) aren't safe anymore because so much money has to be, that would normally go into research and development, go to Andy Daly. It's terrible what you've done. It's not terrible because people, I don't want people to think that I'm responsible for those vitamins. I have nothing to do with them. Okay. But it's spelled differently. And if I want to come out with my Speaker 3 (11:45) own line of vitamins, which I very well might. Daily, daily. You're Speaker 4 (11:51) going Speaker 3 (11:51) to say daily on there. Take your Speaker 4 (11:53) daily, daily. Speaker 3 (11:54) Yeah, I can't have it confused with everything else on the market. That's fair. It makes Speaker 4 (11:57) perfect sense. I'm going to make it clear right now. Andy Daly is one of my favorite people. Don't. Stop. Let me just say it. No. I'm going to say it just a little more. Don't. Just Speaker 3 (12:05) a little more. Speaker 4 (12:05) No. Very funny. No. Stop it. We used you. Used you. like a pack mule on my different late night shows over the years to do really funny things. Okay. That's not a compliment. Also, listen, no, but like a pack mule, were you funny? No. But you can carry very heavy loads in very dry temperatures for a long time at very narrow canyon Speaker 3 (12:28) inclines. I was concerned coming in here that you were going to pay me too many compliments. No, no, no. No, that's it. Oh, okay. All Speaker 4 (12:34) right. But, you know, every time you're on something, whether it's Silicon Valley, Veep, Modern Family, Black-ish, you show up in so many great comedies. You're always excellent. Now, that's it for the nice stuff. Now we get into the real stuff. Because Speaker 3 (12:45) you Speaker 4 (12:45) know what Speaker 3 (12:45) happened the last time I was here? You paid me so many compliments and I was Speaker 4 (12:48) just basking in them, like Speaker 3 (12:50) really enjoying them. It was a great moment for me. And then at the end of it, you said, and is there anything you'd like to say back to me? Speaker 4 (12:55) It Speaker 2 (12:56) was like, and you Speaker 4 (12:57) had nothing. I had, I really had a work. Yeah. I remember I went back and listened to that. Nothing. Cause I've asked many guests. I mean, I just interviewed Mick Jagger for an hour. I know. And I listened back to it. 40 minutes of the interview with Mick Jagger is me demanding to know what he thinks about me. Okay. And it wasn't good. Speaker 3 (13:17) Do you know, I listened to his interview with the New York Times, and I think he kind of subtweeted you because somehow they got onto the topic of comedians. Yeah. And he said, you know, there's some comedians who are just Speaker 4 (13:27) always on. They can't stop. He didn't mention you by name, Conan. And you sure you were talking to Mick Jagger or was that an old British seaman in 1780? He's proving Speaker 3 (13:38) Jagger's point. Do I need to work on my Jagger impression? That's literally the first time I've ever tried to impersonate Mick Jagger. I thought I was in the room with him again. You Speaker 4 (13:46) thought you were in the room. I really did. Very good. Oh, I got to tell you something. Right. It's the posh posh traveling knife, the traveling knife for me. Pardon Speaker 5 (13:55) me? No, I'm just sort of taken aback by it. By your anyone but Jagger impression just now. That Speaker 4 (14:01) was my Jagger. Oh, it was? And I just talked to him for an hour. Humble brag. That's not a humble brag. That's just a brag. Shut up, Conan, talking to himself. Well, it could have been more than an hour. Oh, Shazbat. Mork's back. Yeah, yeah. Let me tell you something. All right. You're funny. You're fast. You're a chameleon. But who are you really? I've known you many years. And you know what? There's no one in there. That is a good question. Because we're friends. Yeah. And I don't know if I know you. Well, exactly. You're friends with Gorley? Speaker 3 (14:27) Yeah, Gorley and I are buddies. Aim higher. Speaker 5 (14:32) Zing! Kazang! I'll cosign Speaker 3 (14:34) on that. Speaker 5 (14:35) You can do better. You know, Speaker 4 (14:36) Ilya Kazan was a great director, but that was Ilya Kazing is what I gave him right there. And I think that was worth going back for. Speaker 5 (14:47) I love Speaker 4 (14:48) a Speaker 5 (14:48) joke that you first have to give a preamble lecture on who and what the subject did. Of course, Speaker 4 (14:54) many people don't like him because he ratted out some other artists during the blacklisting. But anyway. I saw you self edit like that's going to hurt the ultimate punchline if I take Speaker 3 (15:05) a digression into the blacklist. Let me Speaker 4 (15:07) tell you something again. Back to this theme. Andy Daly is the comedy pack mule. You're so good at, again, carrying dry goods. Beef jerky. Thank you. Through desert climbs, but also. You're a shapeshifter. You're always funny. You're an always funny fellow. You Speaker 3 (15:22) know, I Speaker 4 (15:22) did Speaker 3 (15:22) once, I was once offered a role in something that wasn't much on the page. And my agent told me like, but this, this is what you're good at. When there's like not much on the page, you can really bring something. And I thought that's a bad reputation to have. Like offer me parts that are poorly written or underwritten or just no good at all. Yeah. And this guy can do something with it. So Speaker 5 (15:41) you'll only Speaker 4 (15:42) end Speaker 5 (15:42) up in bad production. Only in bad things. A lot of Speaker 4 (15:44) times they just send you blank pages. Speaker 4 (15:48) And then sometimes if it's a commercial, they just ask you to make up the product and then they'll go make it. Speaker 5 (15:54) I don't know. We don't know what to Speaker 4 (15:55) make yet. Send it to Daily. He'll come up with something. With Quizzle Gum, you get a spazzle of a Quizzle Dizzle Bazzle Bazzle. Okay, let's make it. Sounds fantastic. Andy, can I call you Andy? Yeah. Okay, Andrew. I like that better. Speaker 4 (16:12) You and I have known each other for how many years? Would you say it's been 30 years that we've been working together? It feels like 50, but I would say probably 1996 is when we Speaker 3 (16:22) first got to know one another. Speaker 4 (16:24) And we have some things in common. Okay. I know you're an animal lover. Oh, yeah.
