Speaker 8 (1:48) © BF-WATCH TV 2021 Speaker 7 (2:03) There are seasonal trends in every business, including crime. In summer, the majority of crimes are committed against people. Crimes like murder and felonious assault. In winter, however, the criminal turns his attention to crimes against property. Crimes like auto stealing, arson, and armed robbery. During the year of 1946, there were an unprecedented number of those crimes against property. Speaker 8 (2:33) It Speaker 7 (2:34) is important to the future of the country to know that of all the arrests that were made by police throughout the nation, 55 % of those arrested were found to be under the age of 25. Speaker 7 (2:47) There have been various reports that juvenile delinquency is being combated successfully throughout America today. Progress has been made, but there is still much to be done. The number of persons under the age of 18 arrested in 1946 is greater than the number arrested in our last peacetime year, 1941. Speaker 7 (3:11) That fact constitutes a menace to you, the American people. Speaker 7 (3:24) Tonight's file opens in a trash-littered vacant lot near the crowded tenement district of a large Midwestern city. A young boy is idly playing in this lot as a second youth approaches. Speaker 3 (3:39) Hiya, Joe. Huh? Tommy. Wait a minute. What's your hurry? I Speaker 8 (3:44) ain't Speaker 3 (3:45) in Speaker 8 (3:45) no hurry, Tommy. Speaker 3 (3:46) What'd you try to run away for? Speaker 8 (3:47) I was just getting up, that's all. Speaker 3 (3:50) Where you been all week? Speaker 8 (3:51) I been around. Speaker 3 (3:53) Not where I could see you. I Speaker 8 (3:54) looked for you, Tommy, honest. Speaker 3 (3:56) To pay me off? Speaker 8 (3:57) Yeah. Speaker 3 (3:58) Well, it ain't too late now. Let's have it. Speaker 8 (4:02) I... I spent it, Tommy. Speaker 3 (4:04) Don't give me that. Honest. You know what that Speaker 8 (4:07) means, don't you? Oh, no. No, wait, Tommy. Give me a chance, will you? Speaker 3 (4:13) Get up. Speaker 8 (4:14) Please, Tommy, leave me alone. Get up, I said. No, Tommy, no. Speaker 3 (4:19) That's to learn you not to run out on me. Speaker 8 (4:21) Wait, Tommy, I'll pay you. Now? No, just let me go home. I'll get the dome and bring it right back. Speaker 3 (4:26) Well, okay. But get back here fast. Oh, I will, Speaker 8 (4:29) honest, I will. Speaker 4 (4:33) Huh? Regular killer, ain't you? Quite a workout you're getting. Lots of to you, mister. Oh, now, now, save that for somebody your own size. Speaker 4 (4:44) What were you slugging him for? Speaker 3 (4:45) He didn't pay up. Speaker 4 (4:47) What do you mean? Speaker 3 (4:48) I charge him a dime a week for not hitting him. He was a week behind on his dues. He pays you for not hitting him? Yeah. All the kids in the neighborhood do. That's quite a touch. Just one of my touches, Speaker 4 (5:00) mister. Speaker 3 (5:00) No Speaker 4 (5:01) kidding. What are some of your others? Why should I spill empty you? I might be able to give you a few more you don't know about. Come on. Let's you and me go get a soda. Speaker 4 (5:28) I'm in Speaker 6 (5:29) here. Speaker 4 (5:33) Hi, honey. Speaker 6 (5:33) Where you been? Speaker 4 (5:34) Downtown. Speaker 6 (5:35) Doing what? Speaker 4 (5:36) Waking. Speaker 6 (5:37) Wipe that pool chalk off your coat. I tell Speaker 4 (5:40) you, Norm, Speaker 6 (5:40) I was waking. Yeah, I know, I know. You got a big deal. We make a big bundle. Speaker 4 (5:45) That's right. Speaker 6 (5:46) Well, please explain one thing to me, will you? Speaker 4 (5:49) What? Speaker 6 (5:50) You got a phone call right after you left here this morning with someone who sounded all of 16 years old, and he said he was your partner. Now, what's the rib? Speaker 4 (5:59) Well, uh... He ain't exactly my partner, but it wasn't a rib. Speaker 6 (6:03) What? Speaker 4 (6:04) I, uh... I got the kid working with me. Speaker 6 (6:07) What are you going to do? Hijack some bubble gum? Speaker 4 (6:10) Very funny. Just so happens I've lined up a real good score. Speaker 6 (6:14) This I want to hear about. Speaker 4 (6:16) Okay. Now, here's the setup. There's a couple of dozen crates of army binoculars stored in a little building down in the freight yard. Speaker 8 (6:22) Yeah. Speaker 4 (6:22) It's surplus stuff that they're selling to people. There's a real big demand for them now. Speaker 8 (6:25) Well, Speaker 4 (6:26) the building they're in can be entered by a little window at the back near the roof. A window that's just big enough for a kid to crawl through. Speaker 4 (6:35) Now, does it sound so funny? Speaker 6 (6:36) Where'd you get this kid? Speaker 4 (6:37) I picked him up just a few days ago. He's okay. Speaker 6 (6:40) What's the rest of the paper? Speaker 4 (6:41) I'm renting a truck. Back it right up to the building. The Speaker 6 (6:43) kid crawls through the window, then lets you in? Speaker 4 (6:45) That's right. Speaker 6 (6:45) What about the law? Speaker 4 (6:47) There's a watchman. I've got his movement timed. We can load the truck and be out of there before he finishes his rounds. Speaker 6 (6:51) When do you and your little partner go into action? Speaker 4 (6:54) Tonight. Speaker 3 (7:15) Okay, mister. Nice going, Tommy. There's some crates piled up right inside the door. Good. Speaker 4 (7:18) I'll start loading Speaker 3 (7:19) them. You need any help? No, no, no. You stay here. Keep your eyes open. Speaker 4 (7:22) What's the Speaker 3 (7:23) matter with you, mister? What do you mean? You scared? Speaker 4 (7:25) You're kidding. Speaker 3 (7:27) You act that way. Speaker 4 (7:27) Ah, look what waste of time I got to load those crates. Speaker 3 (7:38) Somebody's coming. What? I think it's Speaker 8 (7:39) a Speaker 3 (7:39) railroad station. What do we do? You're running this, ain't Speaker 4 (7:41) you? Speaker 3 (7:41) Yeah, yeah, yeah. Never mind, I'll handle it. Oh, wait a minute. Shh. Speaker 3
