But we wanted to bring some of that in here because we just love to talk about it. And it's Mindless Banner. We can do whatever the F we want. So what are we doing today? Speaker 3 (0:53) So today, we are going to reveal to each other our top 2080s movies. Speaker 2 (0:59) Yeah. Speaker 3 (1:00) And, man... This was so freaking hard. So Speaker 2 (1:04) freaking hard. The Speaker 3 (1:04) last three days, it's just been on my mind. The whole day, just like, oh yeah, why didn't I know? I should have probably done this movie. I'm still not confident this is my favorite list, but it's got a lot of good stuff. If you Speaker 2 (1:19) made me do this list every day, it would be different. One of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my life. Man, it's Speaker 3 (2:47) crazy. It's so hard. Brought back so many memories though. I'm like, oh man. Speaker 2 (2:51) Yeah, and so like we're not doing this as if we're Roger and Ebert and we're doing like the technically best movies of the 80s. This list is basically movies that we grew up with, movies that we... I am who I Speaker 3 (3:04) am because of this. Exactly. Movies Speaker 2 (3:06) that we rewatched a million times. Yeah. Movies that just, like, stuck with us. Movies that we continue to watch today. So this is our list. This is not a list of the best movies of the 1980s, technically. Yeah. All right? So, I mean, some of these might be. Yeah, no. They might be. Actually, some of them are. But so we're going to get right to it and we're going to start with the honorable mentions. Speaker 3 (3:29) Oh, that's a good idea. Speaker 2 (3:31) Let's Speaker 3 (3:31) just Speaker 2 (3:31) start Speaker 3 (3:31) there. I Speaker 2 (3:31) didn't even think about that. Let's start there. Speaker 3 (3:33) Okay. You good with that, Cade? Yeah, no, Speaker 2 (3:34) I think that's fine. So do you want me to do mine or do you want to do yours first? My list is longer than it should be. Yeah, I Speaker 3 (3:41) guess this will take some of those. Speaker 3 (3:44) I was thinking about at the end that people would be like, why didn't you mention that? That was an 80s novelty. So here are some of the honorable mentions just because they stand out in my mind, but they weren't ones that I grew into liking still as I got older as much. Speaker 2 (4:02) So Speaker 3 (4:03) first on my list was An American Tale. Speaker 2 (4:06) Oh, yeah, sure. I had Speaker 3 (4:08) that in there because I remember that movie. I remember. Like, after seeing it, I went home and I was, like, looking at the stars, Speaker 2 (4:15) like, seeing the little, you know, the somewhere out there. Speaker 3 (4:18) I was like, oh, man, it's such a good movie. As a kid, I, like, was like, he's so good. And the music, like, almost made me emotional. Speaker 2 (4:26) Yeah, Speaker 3 (4:26) well, Speaker 2 (4:26) yeah, Speaker 3 (4:26) it's Speaker 2 (4:26) a sad. It's a sad one. Getting separated from your family. Yeah. It'd Speaker 3 (4:31) be tough. Speaker 2 (4:31) It'd be super Speaker 3 (4:31) tough. It'd Speaker 2 (4:31) be Speaker 3 (4:31) tough. So that was one. Speaker 2 (4:33) That's great. Speaker 3 (4:33) Land Before Time made the list, too, just because it was a big movie. Was that, like, late 80s? Yeah. I remember Speaker 2 (4:38) when that was. I keep thinking it's 90s. Yeah, I know. There was a lot that I was like, I'm surprised that was 80s. Speaker 3 (4:43) And it wasn't. And Speaker 2 (4:44) then Speaker 3 (4:45) ones I thought were the 80s weren't. Space Camp. Yeah. Dude, I loved Space Camp. I loved it. I was obsessed Speaker 1 (4:51) with it. Because I Speaker 3 (4:51) was like, Speaker 1 (4:51) this Speaker 3 (4:51) is amazing. They're like this group of kids that get. have to survive in space Speaker 2 (4:57) and make it back. The story is amazing. When you go back and I've seen portions of the movie again, I'm like, this is horrible. Speaker 3 (5:03) It was Speaker 2 (5:04) not a good movie. I haven't seen it in a long time. I just saw little bits and pieces and I'm like, holy crap, I can't believe I watched that so much as a kid. Speaker 3 (5:10) But it was so cool because you're like, could you imagine? Speaker 2 (5:13) Accidentally going to space. Yeah, they're in an actual loaded spaceship. The worst scenario ever. Speaker 3 (5:20) Full fuel. Yeah, Speaker 2 (5:21) yeah. Speaker 3 (5:22) Yeah, they accidentally go to space. Whoops. The next one, and I still watch today, this was a hard one to leave off my main list just because if you can't tell, I got a cold sound weird, but was Overboard. Overboard. Overboard's so good. It's great, man. My wife and I still watch it, and it's like, I'm a huge Kurt Russell fan. Oh, it's Speaker 2 (5:41) so Speaker 1 (5:42) good. Speaker 2 (5:43) He's hilarious in that. I always thought it was so cool that... the shoe rack that he built. You know the shoe rack he built? I'm like, gosh dang, that is so awesome. It's so cool today still. I'm like, that's awesome. And he cranks Speaker 3 (5:55) it backwards. Yeah. Love that movie. And then another movie that stands out as a kid, just because it was dark and it was really well done. And I mean, this year he passed away. What's his name from Legend? Oh, yeah. Curry, right? It's Tim Curry, yeah. Yeah. I Speaker 2 (6:11) still can't Speaker 3 (6:12) believe that was him. Yeah, dude. He was so creepy. Such a cool costume. It was a creepy movie. That's a Speaker 2 (6:17) Ridley Scott movie. Speaker 3 (6:19) Yeah. Is it really? I did not know that. Speaker 2 (6:21) Ridley Scott. Isn't that crazy? Speaker 3 (6:23) I remember being creeped Speaker 2 (6:24) out Speaker 3 (6:24) for Speaker 2 (6:25) the longest Speaker 3 (6:25) time. I Speaker 2 (6:26) hope I'm not talking smack. I don't know. I didn't know that. Speaker 3 (6:30) But Legend is very well done. Like, I don't know what it's like now. I haven't seen it. Yeah, Ridley Scott. Is it really? It's Ridley Scott. I mean, I had no idea. Isn't that nuts? But do you remember the swamp chick? Speaker 2 (6:41) Yeah. She Speaker 3 (6:42) terrified me forever. I had dreams about that for the longest time. That Speaker 2 (6:46) is the creepiest devil that's ever been on film. I Speaker 3 (6:51) think so too. So cool though. So well done. And then the ones that didn't make the list were like the seasonal ones were hard to Speaker 2 (6:59) like put in as my main. So I actually Speaker 3 (7:01) did put some of those in. So Christmas Story. Speaker 2 (7:03) I know. Speaker 3 (7:04) National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. They didn't make my list because it's like I only saw them like that time of year. Well, let me tell you, they Speaker 2 (7:12) did make my list. Okay, good. Because they're Speaker 3 (7:14) amazing. They're amazing. There's an amazing. And then this one, this is the one that I think people will be a little disappointed in me. Star Wars did not make my list. Like, yeah, any Speaker 2 (7:24) of the Star Speaker 3 (7:25) Wars? Any of the Star Wars. Okay. Just because, like... One Speaker 2 (7:27) of Speaker 3 (7:27) them Speaker 2 (7:27) did make my list. Speaker 3 (7:28) They're all great. They're amazing. And Speaker 2 (7:30) I Speaker 3 (7:30) love them. And I still, I watch them to this day, but my list was too full of unique ones for my time, like my age and, like, what I was interested in. Speaker 2 (7:39) I watched them so many times that I felt like I had to put one of them on there. Yeah, so there you go. That's where I went. And Speaker 3 (7:44) I didn't watch them as much as, you know... So let me go to Speaker 2 (7:48) my honorable mentions. And the list is long, so I'm going to go pretty quick on these. And I can't believe some of these didn't make my list. It almost hurts me to say some of these. The first one, Poltergeist. Yeah, I didn't. I Speaker 3 (7:59) freaking Speaker 2 (7:59) loved that movie as a kid. They didn't make my list either. Produced and written by Steven Spielberg. Not really directed, but kind of directed by him. Just scared the hell out of me as a kid. Absolutely, man. Terrifying. That's Speaker 3 (8:13) probably Speaker 2 (8:13) why they didn't make my list. freaks me out too much a bunch of the john hughes movies that i watched endlessly as like um an early teen didn't make the list which i love that's what's weird right Speaker 3 (8:23) some Speaker 2 (8:23) of these fell later yeah like the breakfast club weird science 16 candles love them john hughes is amazing i do have one of his movies on here but uh just weird science is a hard Speaker 3 (8:34) one for legend because i watched it a lot but i didn't it didn't make my list Speaker 2 (8:37) either uh big love that movie Just couldn't fit it in the list. Karate Kid, couldn't fit it in the list. Karate Speaker 3 (8:44) Kid didn't make my list either. Yeah, Speaker 2 (8:45) but like amazing movies. I watched them a million times. The NeverEnding Story, loved it. Watched it a million times, didn't make my list. A movie that my half-uncle and I watched on repeat called The Gate. Have you seen The Gate? Yeah, yep. Didn't make my list. You Speaker 3 (9:00) just Speaker 2 (9:00) watched it not too long ago, right? Yeah, so Speaker 3 (9:01) good. Dude, I Speaker 2 (9:02) freaking love it. Another one that I watched endlessly, Masters of the Universe. We actually did this on our other podcast. Speaker 3 (9:09) We did a lot of the movies, but we didn't make our list. Maybe that's why. Speaker 2 (9:13) It's good. It's fun to watch, but really actually a bad movie. Speaker 1 (9:18) Actually, Speaker 2 (9:20) the t-shirt I'm wearing today, Canon, it was released by Canon Films. Another one. Gosh, man. How did this not make my list? Explorers? I know. It didn't make my list. I thought about it a lot, too, because I really liked it. And the last one, Teen Wolf. Oh, man, I didn't even think about it. For some reason, Speaker 3 (9:37) I didn't even make my list. Speaker 2 (9:39) Loved it as a kid. Still love it today. We watch it all the time. But didn't make my list. So those are my honorable mentions. Speaker 3 (9:45) Yeah, those are Speaker 2 (9:46) all great, man. Speaker 3 (9:47) A lot of those didn't make my list either. I forgot I didn't mention one. Lethal Weapon didn't make my list. Oh, yeah, Speaker 2 (9:54) yeah, yeah. Speaker 3 (9:55) And I just remember when it came out, or watching it at school. Not at school. watching it and then going to school and talking about it. And like, I had a friend that would like slam his shoulder against the like lockers. Like I'm putting my arm back. Yeah. Speaker 2 (10:11) He like that Mel Gibson character was crazy. He was nuts. He was nuts. But, um, Speaker 3 (10:16) that was a good one that I, that I didn't have. Freaking Speaker 2 (10:19) what's his name that, you know, I'm too old for this shit or whatever in that movie. Um, he was only like 42 or something. Danny Glover. Danny Glover. Speaker 3 (10:29) Yeah. Speaker 1 (10:29) This is like, what? Speaker 2 (10:30) I saw that. It's so funny. Like a little meme about that. Speaker 3 (10:32) I was like, you've been kidding me. Speaker 2 (10:33) Actually, funny enough, I watched this like last month. I watched Lethal Weapon. Oh, you did? Yeah. I haven't seen it. How was it? Still really good. Still good? Still really good. That's awesome. Well done. Speaker 3 (10:41) Well Speaker 2 (10:42) done. So let's get into the top 20 list for each of us. Okay. And maybe I'll just start with my number 20. And this, I know this didn't make your list, and it probably wouldn't make most people's list. and it's Back to the Future Part II. Speaker 3 (10:58) Oh, Speaker 2 (10:58) yeah, it did. Most people think this is the worst of the trilogy. I am not in agreement with them. I think it's the second best in the trilogy. I just really loved, as a kid, seeing the future. Speaker 3 (11:12) Yeah. Like, Speaker 2 (11:13) you know, the stuff. I know, it's a weird movie because of that. Yeah, like, I loved... like his house and like the weird fax machines and like dehydrating the the pizzas and just the in the take on the future yeah and when they're in town uh just it's just so cool with the hoverboards and everything um it does get really dark i think that's what Speaker 3 (11:34) that's the only thing that hurt it for me um but Speaker 2 (11:37) i like dark so yeah i Speaker 3 (11:38) i i don't think i watch it as much as a kid and i see why again i watched it recently and i watched all of them again yeah And I appreciated it more, but it was that it was dark. And there's a little intense moments like when Biff and his mom's like dressed like a whore. Yeah, she's got the fake boobs. Yeah. I think that's why I didn't see it as much as a kid. That makes sense. My Speaker 2 (12:01) parents Speaker 3 (12:01) were like, no, it's a little dark. My dad's like, I want it. Speaker 2 (12:04) But, you know, probably my favorite trilogy of all time and my second favorite. Most people would go to three after one, but just I loved it. I watched it all the time. Yeah. That's Speaker 3 (12:16) your Speaker 2 (12:16) 20? That's my number 20. Nice. Okay. That's my number 20. Yeah. And it's just, again, Mike Fox is Marty McFly. Incredible. He's the greatest casting ever. I think so. In the history of casting, I think. That's a good one. Speaker 3 (12:31) That's a good one. I figured they were going to be spread out on your list. This one, my number 20, and some people probably are like, this is a weird movie, but it stands out a ton to me as a kid. Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Oh, dude, Speaker 2 (12:45) I almost put this on my honorable mentions. I loved this movie. I loved it. Like, I still like it. I do, too. It's freaking hilarious. I watched it with my kids a couple of years ago, and I'm like, damn, that's a good movie. Like, it's really good. It's just very Speaker 3 (12:57) unique, and it's fun, and it has, like, a lot Speaker 2 (13:00) of stuff Speaker 3 (13:00) going on. As Speaker 2 (13:01) a kid, there is nothing better than the opening, or maybe not the opening, the part of the film where he's just in his house getting ready for the day. Oh, Speaker 3 (13:08) yeah, the toast and all the, Speaker 2 (13:09) like... Speaker 3 (13:09) Yeah, the serial. The automated stuff. It Speaker 2 (13:12) was so amazing. In his Speaker 3 (13:14) house, in his bike. Yeah, and his dog. Oh, my gosh. It was cool. Yeah, I really liked this movie. And I quoted it a lot. My family did. So that's another big thing. It's like, a lot of this is what your family like. Speaker 2 (13:29) Yeah. Speaker 3 (13:29) You know. What they like. And would talk about. Speaker 2 (13:32) But just, and also like, you know, like the gum that he gives them and it makes it like, yeah, Speaker 3 (13:36) it's just like, yeah, there's so many cool little pieces. He's all, yeah. And it turns black and then the other is all, ah! And that guy, that guy is so gross. I remember wanting, I was like, that pool when he's like, got the boats. I'm like, what a cool, This is so rad. Speaker 2 (13:49) This is so rad. And, you know, and it's kind of, it's a little bit dark in places too. Speaker 3 (13:55) Yeah. You know? Speaker 2 (13:56) The Speaker 3 (13:57) part when all the eyes show up. My Speaker 2 (14:00) gosh, dude. Speaker 3 (14:01) It's a good Speaker 2 (14:01) show. I agree. That's a really good one. If you haven't Speaker 3 (14:03) seen it, you should watch that. Speaker 2 (14:05) All the other ones are not good. No, I agree. That's the only one. And the large march. I love the 80s. The Speaker 3 (14:12) clay animation stuff. So cool. Did you ever Speaker 2 (14:17) watch Pee Wee's Playhouse? Yeah, I did. I watched it too. I watched it a lot Speaker 3 (14:22) when I was a kid. It was weird. But it was good. So Speaker 2 (14:24) freaking weird. Couches like Speaker 3 (14:26) talking to him. Yeah. Stuff Speaker 2 (14:27) showing up outside. Yeah. It's very odd. Yeah. Like what a weird dude. I actually watched the documentary on him. Yeah. Like last year. Did you see it? No. He's Speaker 3 (14:35) a Speaker 2 (14:35) weird dude, man. Was he? But like a genius. I knew he Speaker 3 (14:39) had some issues. Yeah. Speaker 2 (14:40) Freaking genius though. Yeah. You know. Yeah. Speaker 3 (14:43) Peewee is a big part of my childhood. Yeah. I Speaker 2 (14:45) like that. Cool. What about your 19? Let's go with your 19. My Speaker 3 (14:48) number 19 because this like blue. my mind as a kid and all my imagination, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Speaker 2 (14:56) Oh, God, that's a good one. I didn't even put it on my list. I loved it because to visualize the way Speaker 3 (15:02) that they built the set was so cool. Like crawling in the Lego, the ants, eating pieces of the Oreo. Speaker 2 (15:09) It was the oatmeal cookie. That's what it was. It was an oatmeal Speaker 3 (15:13) cookie. And every time I, the stuff in the middle. Yeah. Every time I would Speaker 2 (15:16) see that, I'm like, I need oatmeal cookies like now. And then they need to be giant and they need to be giant. Speaker 3 (15:23) I remember so much about it. And so many like in Speaker 2 (15:26) the sister. Speaker 3 (15:27) Yeah. I was like, Speaker 2 (15:27) she's just kind of hot. She's kind of hot. And, um, dude, Speaker 3 (15:31) I remember thinking like how slimy the water is in your lawn. Yeah. Speaker 2 (15:35) And I was like, what is going on there? Rick Moranis. was so effing good yeah he's like amazing Speaker 3 (15:41) actor uh Speaker 2 (15:42) i'm really excited that he's coming back for the new space balls but like speaking of that didn't make my list my list either and that was an honorable mention i forgot probably i love space Speaker 3 (15:51) balls there's Speaker 2 (15:52) so many good movies yeah it's coming out Speaker 3 (15:53) exactly uh Speaker 2 (15:54) 40 years Speaker 3 (15:55) 40 years yeah that's insane but Speaker 2 (15:58) like yeah that movie i was the same way man i thought it was uh it was really good it was a good rewatchable you would just rewatch it all the time he was on tv a lot too Yeah. But yeah, just like, just the concept of them having to go through their lawn all the way back home. Yeah. It's so cool. The way Speaker 3 (16:15) they built everything so big and like, I don't know, this is a very, very cool movie. That's a good one. So Speaker 2 (16:20) I'm Speaker 3 (16:20) stuck out of town for me. I like it. I like Speaker 2 (16:22) it. That's a great Speaker 3 (16:23) 19. That was an 89. Almost made it. Almost made it to Speaker 2 (16:26) the 90s. My number 19 comes from maybe the greatest year in cinema history, 1987. Oh my gosh. And this is such a weird, dark, dystopian, futuristic film, Robocop. Yep. Dude, amazing, amazing sets, amazing setting. Like, the town of Detroit in this dystopian future, so awesome. It was so cool. And it's just like robot, like biomechanics stuff. Like so cool. And just like the architecture of some of the buildings and stuff. Just like amazing. Speaker 3 (17:02) It's on Speaker 2 (17:03) my list too. Is it? I figured Speaker 3 (17:04) it would be. Which Speaker 2 (17:05) is Speaker 3 (17:05) pretty messed up that we saw this at our age. It's one of the goriest movies ever. It's really gory. I know I watched it before I was 10. I know I did. I watched it pretty stinking young. I didn't Speaker 2 (17:16) like go see it in the theaters, but I watched Speaker 3 (17:18) it on VHS. Speaker 2 (17:20) probably the next year it's probably like 88 or 89 i assume so i can see the cover like him getting out of the cop car and everything like it's like i used to see it so when we rent movies all the time like yeah it's a good one i should watch that again so this was the i buy that for a dollar yeah that's yeah just Speaker 3 (17:36) like Speaker 2 (17:36) such a weird movie can you Speaker 3 (17:38) fly Speaker 2 (17:38) johnny yeah but really good like really quotable like some amazing scenes it had some of that claymation too with that one yes Well, it wasn't very great, but... Ed 409 or 209 or whatever. Just a really cool movie. Weird, funny. Again, really dark, dystopian. I think the late 80s were so good with the futuristic dystopian stories. Yeah, yeah, they were. And the way that they portrayed what the future was going to look Speaker 3 (18:06) like. I Speaker 2 (18:06) had Speaker 3 (18:07) a RoboCop toy, too. Speaker 1 (18:09) Oh, you Speaker 3 (18:10) did. And like after I lost the helmet, I didn't want it anymore because I hated his face. His face is Speaker 2 (18:15) gross. I named my dog Robocop. That's right. My dog's name is Robocop. That's Speaker 3 (18:19) true. I didn't even think about it. Yeah. I think I've said this before. play on the tramp all the time.
