Speaker 3 (0:00) The following podcast is a Dear Media production. Welcome to Breaking Beauty, the podcast all about the breakthrough people, products, and moments in beauty. We're your hosts, Jill Speaker 2 (0:14) Dunn and Carlene Higgins. Speaker 2 (0:21) Hello, everyone, and welcome back to another episode of Breaking Beauty Podcast. It's officially fall now, so we are in your feeds with a hashtag damn good episode that's all about fall must-haves. I am Jill Dahn, one of your co-hosts. I'm here with my friend and colleague for nine years. carlene higgins hello Speaker 3 (0:40) yes so we are former beauty editors turned beauty podcasters in your feed every single wednesday with the breakthrough people products and moments in beauty and as jill said once a month we do our hashtag damn goods episodes where we review products of the month and fall is always so exciting because There are so many launches. So Speaker 2 (1:03) in today's episode, we're going to be talking about some of the biggest, buzziest launches of the season. There are complexion launches galore. Hong Van Gogh, Jones Road Beauty, Lisa Eldridge. We're also going to be talking about some skincare. Of course, we know so many of you tune in for our skincare reviews. And so with that, let's dive in, Carlene. Speaker 3 (1:22) All right. So I think we should start with complexion because honestly, you had said to me, you're like, I think maybe we just do a foundation or complexion episode, like another one. And we just did one in the spring. We'll link to it in our show notes, guys. But because there just have been so many. So I think we have to start there. What have you been trying? So I tried Speaker 2 (1:45) the. now kind of infamous, I would say, Jones Road Beauty Wide Awake Brightening Concealer, $32 U.S. dollars and $46 in Canada. It is a little pot concealer. And some of you may remember when Bobbi Brown, name drop, was on our show about a year ago, and she talked about how she was working on a new concealer. And many of you also may be familiar with the pencil that she had. She had the concealing face stick. Yes, I do remember. Speaker 3 (2:15) I like that product. And a Speaker 2 (2:16) lot of makeup artists have recommended that. It's good for sketching on, just adding that coverage. It's like a chunky Speaker 3 (2:21) pencil versus the Lisa Eldridge thin one. Yes, Speaker 2 (2:24) exactly. So this particular concealer is solving a different problem. A lot of people found that one drying. Yeah, I was going to say it's a bit matte. So this is really meant for, as the name indicates, wide awake. It's for underneath the eyes. They also have a line of neutralizers. So you can color correcting. Yeah. And you can also conceal on top of that. I tried the corrector. That's not necessarily my big, as I say, bugaboo. My thing is about the bags and trying to like make those look a little less puffy and just make. bring a little more lightness or wide awakeness underneath the eyes. So I love this formula. She ate with this. I think it's fantastic. And I have to tell everybody, I went to the Jones Road store to properly get shade matched. Speaker 1 (3:11) And Speaker 2 (3:11) I was telling you about my experience in there. And it was like, it was so joyous. Yeah. It was really fascinating. girl bonding time between the customers and the artists and you can get makeup lessons in there, everything there. I love that. I thought it Speaker 3 (3:27) was fantastic. Yeah. Well, when we talked to Bobbi last year, I think. Yeah, it was about a year ago. We will link to that episode in our show notes as well. But she was talking about retail and the power of retail, which is a really tough nut to crack. We know this. This is the land of DTC. And I think. It's really, to me, Bobbi Brown's knowledge and experience and her hands on, like, I want to help women. I want I'm not going to be intimidating. I'm not about that. I'm not a gatekeeper. This isn't about just like looking as cool as humanly possible. It's really more about women leaning in for women. And I feel like what you described, because Jill told me this story about like this woman who's like getting her makeup lesson. And then she's like, I'm going to go get my dress and then I'll come back so you can see the final look. And everybody's clapping. Yeah, like she came Speaker 2 (4:19) back in the store and everyone's like oohing and aahing over how she transformed. It was like a makeover. But she made the point to come back to the store to show her artist. And I was like, what? is even Speaker 3 (4:30) happening. I Speaker 2 (4:30) love that, but it reminds me of like old Speaker 3 (4:32) school department store from like the way, way back in like the 80s. And I feel like that human connection, it's just so lovely. It makes sense for the demographic Bobby Brown is catering to. And, you know, it's unfortunate that she will have to change the name because that's going to cost a lot of money. So this has been a little dust up in the last few days, hasn't Speaker 2 (4:55) it? Speaker 3 (4:55) Little Gen X dust up. Speaker 3 (4:58) Between Molly Sims and Bobby Brown. And just in case you missed it, Molly Sims went on Instagram, took to TikTok and said she didn't name them, but she's like, there is a brand that I really love. I use a lot of their products. And they came out with a product with the same name as my under eye product. She's like, we have five people in the marketing department. We work so hard. And this big brand came in and yada, yada. Speaker 3 (5:28) And Bobby Brown responded with a notice on her Instagram saying this was not deliberate. This was accidental, which I fully, fully believe. And since then, as I understand it, Molly has taken down her post. They spoke. And again, Bobby did the right thing and said, my bad, my bad. We will change the name. But that is a big whoops like that is that's going to be very costly. All the SEO she's missing out on all of that. But she's doing the right thing. Now, ultimate respect. I Speaker 2 (5:59) would argue they just both had the best marketing of their entire lives. No, honestly, they just went. Yeah, they honest to God should collab. Yeah. Molly should be in the next Jones Road beauty ad and vice versa. Or just like it would. This is the era we are living in. Totally. The thing that the impression I got from Bobby. When I saw this go down on social media, I was like, she's going to make it right. Because when we interviewed her, she was discussing her memoir and there was no mudslinging in that book. That's just not her style. I got the, you know, she's going to take the high road and she's going to make stuff right. She's a classy lady. But you can still buy this product by the name that I've called it today. And these things take time. Yeah, exactly. And they worked it out. Yeah, exactly. Love to see it. Yeah. Speaker 2 (6:53) Medicaid is one of our show partners this week. We all want to be on a retinol journey that we don't want to quit. And the reality is so many of us start and stop, start and stop, because you get in this vicious cycle of putting the retinol on and then you peel and you flake and you just are like, I can't even deal with this. But if you're like me and you're in the fall mode to sort of reset and get your skincare back on track, I want to invite you to try out the Medicaid Crystal Retin-L. And you'll notice that I say retin-L. That's our R-E-T-I-N-A-L. And that's because Medicaid's crystal retinol, it's actually formulated using retinaldehyde, which works up to 11 times faster than standard retinol. So it is proven to smooth stubborn wrinkles, decongest and firm your skin. without any of that irritation that you might expect from traditional retinols. And I personally love the crystal retinol from Medicaid. I understand why it is so award-winning because what they have done is they have allowed you to ladder up to the retinol strength that you want. So you can start out with three and then they have all different versions that go up from there. So they're really thinking about the people that want to do this journey, but in baby steps. And I think that's the journey that will be. the most consistent and you'll get those great results. I personally love with the Retinol, the number three that I've used consistently. It's just the refinement of the texture of your skin that really starts to kind of show those bigger pores and the lines as you age. And Medicaid, they're clinically proven. Dermatologists love British skincare brand, and they're really known for age-defying results without compromise. And by the way, everyone, Medicaid is now available both in-store and online at Sephora in the U.S. and Canada. And even better news, if you want to try Medicaid's crystal retinol for yourself, we have a special promo code. Visit Medicaid.us and use code BREAKING20 for 20 % off your first order. That's M-E-D-I-K, the number eight dot U-S. Once again, visit Medicaid.us and use code BREAKING20 for 20 % off your first order. That's M-E-D-I-K, the number eight dot U-S. We'll link to this offer in our show notes and on our website. Now back to the show. Speaker 4 (9:11) Welcome to Who's in My Glam Chair, where the glam is good and the conversations are even better. I'm Alexis Oakley, a celebrity makeup artist, and after 10 years in the glam chair, I've learned that getting ready is when you talk about everything. Beauty, business, dating, confidence, careers, and probably the things you shouldn't be saying out loud. Nothing is off limits. New episodes drop every Wednesday. So grab your makeup bag, your coffee, and get ready with us. This is Who's in My Glam Chair. Speaker 3 (9:47) Now, while we've been in New York, you also went over to the Lisa Eldridge pop-up shop, which I know they've extended. So I assume it's doing gangbusters. Yeah, it's Speaker 2 (9:58) open now till... early December. Yeah. And Speaker 3 (10:01) it's Speaker 2 (10:02) really wonderful because there's no place to go in store typically in North America to see her products in person. Yeah. So it's just like her whole archive come to life magazine covers on the wall and Marilyn Monroe memorabilia everywhere and just like images that Lisa herself has worked on and crafted. And there's little vanity stations where you can get your makeup done. Yeah. And she hand selected every single artist that's in there. Love it. So there is a threshold. Every single one of them is a professional artist. Speaker 1 (10:32) And Speaker 2 (10:32) I think I'm sure it was rigorous process to even work there. But I had to make my way there to try her concealer, which is the Luminist concealer. Speaker 1 (10:42) So Speaker 2 (10:43) again, this is something that I'm looking for underneath the eye. I want that luminosity. And I. We're Speaker 3 (10:51) going Speaker 2 (10:51) to get a comparison, Speaker 3 (10:52) apparently. Yeah. How do you compare these? Speaker 2 (10:54) Well, the the Bobby Brown one certainly gives you more coverage. So this is really all about brightening under the eye. And the thing about Lisa is that she's all about these olive tones. She's really well known for that. And apparently a large majority of the population has olive undertones, but they're really left out. So she has very much
