Speaker 1 (0:00) Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dan Shepard. I'm joined by Lily Padman. Hi. Hi. Today we have a returning friend of ours who we love her. We love her to death. Joey King. She is an actor. Yes. The Act. The Kissing Booth. Three of those, I believe. Bullet Train. Uglies. In the new movie that's slain, it opened number one. Speaker 4 (0:20) Practical Magic 2, baby. Speaker 1 (0:22) Big hit. Practical Magic 2. In theaters now. Check it out. Make that third weekend humongous. Do it. We love her. Please enjoy Joy King. Speaker 1 (0:48) Hi, don't I look summery? Speaker 4 (0:51) Summery Speaker 1 (0:51) and Speaker 4 (0:51) cute. It's the vibe. Oh my gosh, you guys. Speaker 3 (0:55) How are you feeling? Speaker 1 (0:56) Do Speaker 3 (0:56) you Speaker 1 (0:56) recall what you wore the last time you were here? Wait, I Speaker 3 (0:59) do. Speaker 1 (1:00) You do? I know exactly what I wore. Tell me what you wore last time. I only Speaker 3 (1:03) remember things through actually what people wear. That's how I have like all core memories from when I was a kid too. I'm like, you were wearing a brown Juicy Couture sweatsuit. Oh my God. You had a braid. I had a braid and I had my Jordans on. I had a very long white. I was like white pants, white lab Speaker 1 (1:20) coat vibe almost. I Speaker 3 (1:21) cannot Speaker 1 (1:22) believe you remember. You were wearing a yellow Speaker 3 (1:25) skirt, like a huge yellow skirt and a yellow sweater on top. And you were wearing one of Brad's cashmere shirts. Oh. Speaker 1 (1:32) God's true. That's insane. Then we got really Speaker 3 (1:35) dressed up for you. You were saying, you were like, I just wanted to feel really cute today. And I was like, yes. Speaker 1 (1:40) Maybe because you had identified her as stylish. Yeah, Speaker 3 (1:42) you were. I identified you as stylish. Oh, me? Yes. Like I Speaker 4 (1:46) dress for the girls I know will care. I notice. But Speaker 3 (1:50) of course. Today I look a little more girly. You look so cute. Speaker 1 (1:55) Historically girly. Speaker 3 (1:56) Yeah. Today I look more... Trad Speaker 1 (1:57) wife. Thank Speaker 3 (1:58) you. Thank you so much. More witchy, I would say. I'm on theme with my press, I guess. Speaker 1 (2:03) That's the only young people word I know is trad wife. Yeah. You're Speaker 3 (2:07) overusing it. Yep. Wait, can I ask, is it a young person term or is it just coming back around and it's not a young person term? Speaker 1 (2:15) Well, even if it had been traditional wife, which maybe is old, they definitely weren't saying trad wife in the 80s or 1900s where I'm from. And you just made it. I Speaker 3 (2:24) am also from the 1900s. Barely. Barely. Speaker 1 (2:27) How many months were left before 2000? Speaker 3 (2:30) Five. Speaker 1 (2:30) Five months. Were you born in July? Speaker 3 (2:33) Yeah. I just wanted to make sure. Great. July what? July Speaker 4 (2:37) 30th. Speaker 3 (2:37) I just Speaker 1 (2:38) had a birthday. Happy birthday. How old did Speaker 4 (2:40) we turn? 27. Speaker 1 (2:42) I Speaker 4 (2:42) do Speaker 1 (2:43) know you're 27. You're at peak. This is as good as your body will ever feel. You know that, right? I Speaker 3 (2:48) feel great. That's what they say. I wasn't feeling great last year. You weren't. No, I feel like after 25, I was like, boo. And then 27 came around. I was like, I'm starting to feel better. Okay, good. 25, frontal lobe fully developed. Hated it. Yeah, Speaker 4 (3:02) you knew too much. I was like, man, this sucks. Speaker 3 (3:04) Yeah. Speaker 1 (3:05) Okay, Speaker 3 (3:06) can Speaker 1 (3:06) we go back to the dressing? Yeah. So we just had Taryn Edgerton on. Have you ever met Taryn in real life? Speaker 3 (3:13) I think we've met very briefly during the award circuit stuff. Lovely guy. Great actor. Speaker 1 (3:18) Well, he's a really good actor. He's awesome. But I think what's more exciting is he's... so incredibly attractive in real life. You know how it is. You meet people on carpets. Yes. You see them on TV. You see them in real life. There's always some difference. It can be positive or negative or different. Totally. He's somebody who's already a fox in a bombshell. And Speaker 3 (3:39) then in person. I Speaker 1 (3:40) was like, how can you be this attractive? And Monica felt that way too. You Speaker 3 (3:44) and your man crushes. I love men. You Speaker 1 (3:46) have Speaker 3 (3:46) so many. Speaker 1 (3:46) So anyways. Monica was editing the episode. She calls me and she's like, I can't believe how fucking bad my hair looked in that episode. And you didn't say anything. And then we got this thing. I'm like, how would you have not done your hair for Taryn Edgerton? And she's like, I would never. But for the girls, and this is proof of that. You Speaker 4 (4:02) look so cute. I knew Speaker 3 (4:04) I'd see you. I'm going to wear my overalls. It's giving like August. It looks like you're going to go to a flower field afterwards. Thank you. That's exactly what she's doing. I have a little nibble of cheese and strawberries together. That sounds Speaker 4 (4:17) delight. That's what I'm trying to give off. A Speaker 3 (4:18) fig. Speaker 4 (4:18) A fig. They are in season. They're in season. They are in season. You're going to the farmer's market, Speaker 3 (4:25) you're going to see a lot of figs. No, I was Speaker 4 (4:26) full of regret. I was full of regret after that. I had Speaker 3 (4:29) an Speaker 4 (4:29) identity crisis. Did you really? Kind of. I was like, what? What are Speaker 3 (4:33) we Speaker 4 (4:33) doing? I was like, what am I doing? Yeah. What was the walk me through like the internal dialogue? Speaker 3 (4:38) Oh, it's Speaker 1 (4:39) Taryn today. I guess I can just fucking and then walked over here. OK. I'm trying to make Speaker 3 (4:44) it Speaker 1 (4:44) comedic. Why Speaker 3 (4:45) didn't you say anything? Thank you. I Speaker 1 (4:47) didn't think her hair looked bad. And even when she showed me the clip, I'm like, your hair looks great. Speaker 3 (4:50) This is a problem with when me and my husband go out. I won't be looking at his hair and then he'll go to the rest. I'm going to be like. Oh my God, how have you not said Speaker 4 (5:00) a word? Okay. And you just haven't noticed. No, I wasn't looking. But Speaker 1 (5:03) you know what he's wearing and you probably would have said something about his outfit. Speaker 3 (5:06) Yeah, but he's got good style. Like, I think he looks great. Speaker 1 (5:09) You filed it as done. It's Speaker 3 (5:10) done. It's Speaker 1 (5:11) great. Speaker 3 (5:11) But every now and then I'll be like, oh shit, your hair does look crazy. My Speaker 4 (5:14) bad. Speaker 1 (5:15) Oh, Speaker 2 (5:16) yeah. Speaker 4 (5:17) Okay. That's the opposite. It's come up on a few episodes lately. Dax has a friend who he was out to dinner with and he had three big nose hairs coming out of Speaker 3 (5:28) his nose. Really Speaker 1 (5:28) aggressive and really girthy. That's a Speaker 4 (5:31) good friend to say something. No, but we're not there. That's Speaker 1 (5:33) not Speaker 4 (5:33) the theme of Speaker 1 (5:34) the story yet. So Speaker 3 (5:35) it Speaker 1 (5:35) was a Speaker 4 (5:35) double date. So the wives were there too. And Dax and Kristen noticed the hairs. They didn't say anything. Then they got in the car and they were like, how could that wife allow him to walk out the door like that? Speaker 3 (5:47) What the hell's wrong with her? But maybe she didn't notice. Speaker 1 (5:50) Okay, Joey. Yeah. I said she hates him. Why would she let him be out with her? It's so obvious. She couldn't have missed it. They got divorced like three months later. Speaker 3 (6:01) Yeah. You are so perceptive. Isn't the weirdest thing, right? Wait, wait, wait, Speaker 1 (6:06) wait. That Speaker 3 (6:07) is Speaker 1 (6:07) actually huge. This is huge news. It is, right? This is huge news for married couples. Yeah, Speaker 2 (6:11) it is. We Speaker 3 (6:12) need to bring awareness to this. Speaker 1 (6:15) If your husband has porcupine quills coming out of his nose at the guest. It's Speaker 3 (6:18) being Speaker 1 (6:18) addressed. Speaker 3 (6:19) The moment Speaker 1 (6:20) he opens his eyes. Yes, go on. Jesus, let's get these out. Just Speaker 4 (6:23) let's. I just worry that maybe she was like, I love him for who he is. It doesn't matter. She saw the nose hairs and then she was like, you're served. She was so Speaker 3 (6:31) grossed Speaker 1 (6:31) out by them. Well, that's what she listed as the reason for the separation. Speaker 3 (6:36) You ever think of that? You ever think she did bring it to his attention and he was like, I like the way I am. That's what I said. And she was like, this is too much. That's what I Speaker 1 (6:44) said. I don't think that. Speaker 3 (6:45) Me neither, by the way. But it's Speaker 1 (6:47) feasible what you're saying. If they already hated each other and she was like, you have nose hair, fucking deal with it. You know, they could have gotten. Speaker 3 (6:53) I mean, yeah, I agree. You're Speaker 1 (6:54) always Speaker 3 (6:54) picking on me. I Speaker 1 (6:55) don't Speaker 3 (6:55) honestly think that way, but it could have been a piece of the puzzle. Yeah. Not the puzzle as a whole. No, it's Speaker 1 (7:02) not Speaker 3 (7:02) the full picture. Do Speaker 1 (7:03) people Speaker 3 (7:03) say that as an expression? It's Speaker 1 (7:04) a Speaker 3 (7:04) hugely popular saying. It's Speaker 1 (7:05) not the Speaker 3 (7:05) puzzle as a whole. Speaker 1 (7:06) No. Just making Speaker 3 (7:07) up new expressions. I've Speaker 1 (7:08) started writing down, my wife has so many talents. Speaker 3 (7:11) I know. But she does not have Speaker 1 (7:13) the talent of the analogy. And I just have started a file in my phone. I'm like, I got to start writing these down. And the one that I wrote down on the way to the Savannah Bananas. Speaker 3 (7:21) Oh. That was awesome. Speaker 1 (7:23) Wasn't that incredible? Speaker 3 (7:25) I couldn't believe it. That was so cool. Me and Speaker 1 (7:28) the Speaker 2 (7:28) girls were like, how do we know Speaker 3 (7:29) that Speaker 1 (7:29) person? I can't believe Speaker 3 (7:29) you guys are like here right now. It was like five seconds ago. Speaker 1 (7:31) This is her on a phone call. And she goes, look, sometimes a thousand paper cuts does sink the ship. Oh my Speaker 3 (7:38) God. And she's on the phone. This sounds like me. Me and Speaker 1 (7:41) the kids are in the car and I let them drive and I look back and the girls are already laughing and they're like, oh yeah. So many ships have been brought down by a thousand. Speaker 3 (7:51) This Speaker 1 (7:52) is steeped in history. This Speaker 3 (7:53) is so funny that you said this. This actually just came up last week because I, too, get a little confused on my analogies. And my husband was like, this is so sweet, but you never get them right. And I was like, oh, I Speaker 1 (8:08) didn't know. But it's charming. It is. Can you think of one that you constantly bungle? Oh, Speaker 3 (8:13) man. What is that one? The two hands in my bush, like something in the feathers. Two Speaker 1 (8:18) hands in Speaker 3 (8:18) my bush. Speaker 1 (8:18) Let's have some fun. What is that one? It's two in the pink. Speaker 3 (8:25) Oh, my God. That's what you're thinking. No, it's bird in the hand. Is that what you mean? Speaker 1 (8:29) Yeah, yeah, exactly. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Speaker 4 (8:33) That's so crazy. Do Speaker 1 (8:34) you know what it means? Speaker 4 (8:35) It's a bad one. Here's the Speaker 1 (8:36) issue. I think they're impossible to remember if you don't really understand what's being said. And they're so historic sometimes. Speaker 3 (8:43) Yeah, like they're so Victorian. Exactly. So Speaker 1 (8:46) it means that you have the choice if you have a bird in your hand. Or you could put it down and grab your rifle and try to get there's two in this bush. So maybe you could shoot both that are in the bush, but you've just gotten rid of the one you know you're going to have. So you should never get rid of one in the hand for two in the bush because you might not get the two in the bush. I Speaker 3 (9:03) want to go on who wants to be a millionaire with you. Oh, OK. Do you know, like a lot of like random stuff like that? I mean, would you consider that random? Yeah. Speaker 4 (9:11) Yeah. But I don't know if I'd call that trivia. That's like knowledge. Well, I guess it's all the same thing. Speaker 1 (9:17) What's the diff? That Speaker 4 (9:18) could be a question. Speaker 1 (9:19) What's the difference Speaker 4 (9:19) between knowledge and trivia? Nothing. Speaker 1 (9:24) What Speaker 4 (9:24) does a dime a dozen mean? I mean, I know what it means, but what does it come from? No, no, I don't know. Speaker 1 (9:31) I don't know what the origin is, but it makes sense to me. Okay, Speaker 4 (9:35) it doesn't make sense to me. I say it a Speaker 3 (9:37) lot. I'm Speaker 4 (9:38) actually Speaker 3 (9:38) really wrapping, I almost said wrapping my head. See, there's nothing. I can't say anything. I just found out. I've always had prank call my whole life. I was watching The Wire and they were talking about a crank call that came in and I was like, what the hell are they Speaker 4 (9:51) talking Speaker 3 (9:51) about? That could go either way though. I know, but I had never, and I looked it up, there is a difference. What's Speaker 1 (9:56) the difference? I Speaker 4 (9:57) don't remember. Speaker 3 (9:58) But I do remember that one of them is with intent of malice. And like, it's considered kind of like. A crime. And then one is more. Hijinks. Yes. It's innocent, even if it's annoying. But one is like with malice. And I believe that's Speaker 1 (10:13) a Speaker 3 (10:13) crank call. That seems Speaker 4 (10:15) more cranky. For real. Speaker 1 (10:17) Back to a dime a dozen. Yes. Please tell. Speaker 4 (10:19) So Speaker 1 (10:19) any item that you could buy 12 of for 10 cents, what that tells you is there's a massive amount of those things. So the supply is infinite and the demand is quite low. Because you can't buy shit. You can't buy 12 of anything for 10 cents. Speaker 4 (10:35) You can't Speaker 1 (10:36) even buy 12 pennies for 10 cents. Speaker 4 (10:39) That does clear it up. That does clear it up. Speaker 3 (10:42) So Speaker 1 (10:42) I think that's why you can or cannot remember them as if they make logical sense. Then you remember them quite easily. Because I never knew that. Speaker 3 (10:48) Because I just never knew that. But I always thought, see, I'm glad we're talking about this. Yeah, Speaker 1 (10:53) me Speaker 3 (10:53) too. Because dime a dozen, I'm confusing it with the one. I thought that meant like, oh, she's so gorgeous. Special. Speaker 1 (11:00) That's a dime. She's Speaker 3 (11:01) a dime. Dime Speaker 1 (11:02) piece. It's Speaker 3 (11:02) just a dime. You just cut out the dozen. And Speaker 1 (11:05) you Speaker 3 (11:05) know Speaker 1 (11:05) why calling someone a dime makes sense. Speaker 3 (11:07) Because they're a 10. Yeah. Right. Speaker 1 (11:09) Guys, I got it. I think you would have to cut this out. I don't even know if Speaker 3 (11:13) I Speaker 1 (11:13) can admit this, but I'm asking you. I can't wait. I don't think any of us will admit to this. Speaker 3 (11:16) Oh, my God. I can't wait. What Speaker 1 (11:18) are you doing with pennies? Speaker 1 (11:22) When they enter your life. Speaker 3 (11:24) What are you doing? Speaker 4 (11:26) Why is this needing to be edited out? I'm nervous. Speaker 2 (11:30) What are you doing? Speaker 1 (11:32) America's going to fucking skewer me for this. But my daughter found a penny somewhere. I was like, oh, lucky penny. And then she carried it for a day or so. And then she just threw it on the counter in our house. And she's never, ever going to. That was it. She liked finding it. And so now it's on the counter. And I'm like. what are we going to do with this penny? I guess I could get a jar. We could start collecting pennies. None of us are ever going to go to a coin master and turn these into anything, right? So I'm literally going, what's going to happen to this penny? I've either got to find someone who wants a penny. The move would have been, I should have went outside and chucked Speaker 3 (12:04) it Speaker 1 (12:04) on the sidewalk. That would be the move. Speaker 3 (12:07) Or find a water fountain, make a wish. Yeah, Speaker 1 (12:09) that would be great. Speaker 3 (12:10) A water feature. Yeah, somewhere in LA. Speaker 1 (12:13) The second I can admit to myself this item will never be used in our lives. You Speaker 3 (12:17) get rid of it. Speaker 1 (12:18) Get it the fuck out of here. I don't want to be stressed out every time I look at it like, God, I should get rid of it. But you can't get rid of it because it has a value. I don't play that game. My life's fucking short. My wife will be like, uh. This accidental six-pack of glue we bought that we don't need and we never use, let's put it in the supply closet. I'm like, why? So it'll sit there for life and then our kids will have to fucking throw it away. Someone's going to have to throw this shit away. Speaker 3 (12:38) Yeah, but it certainly won't be me. Exactly. So Speaker 1 (12:41) what do you do with one penny? Speaker 3 (12:43) Well, Speaker 4 (12:43) can Speaker 3 (12:43) you tell us what you did with one? I know what he did. He threw it in the garbage. I threw Speaker 1 (12:46) it away. Well, that's not... Speaker 4 (12:48) Well, it's not what Speaker 1 (12:49) I thought. It's Speaker 4 (12:50) terrible, Speaker 1 (12:50) right? Is Speaker 3 (12:50) it Speaker 1 (12:50) really? Throwing money away? It Speaker 3 (12:52) is Speaker 1 (12:52) being discontinued. As it should. Speaker 4 (12:55) It's like Pluto. It's like no one cares. This conversation started, though, the way you started this, it sounded like you put them up your butt. Speaker 1 (13:04) Oh, that's why you guys both were like, what did you do? I Speaker 3 (13:07) thought he Speaker 1 (13:07) was licking Speaker 3 (13:08) them. Speaker 1 (13:08) Oh. Speaker 4 (13:09) Swallowing up Speaker 3 (13:10) the butt. Speaker 1 (13:10) I used to do that. Which Speaker 3 (13:12) one? The licking. A version of the licking. Could you clarify? You put two hands in your bush and held a penny? That's right. Speaker 1 (13:18) Yes, right. Speaker 3 (13:19) Put a couple pennies in your bush. Speaker 1 (13:21) There was, I don't know if it's a wives tale, but back when I was an alcoholic, And unfortunately, and this is shameful and sinful, but I did. I drove drunk often. And one wives tale was that if you put pennies under your tongue, the breathalyzer would be tripped up in some weird way. So I regularly was driving through L.A. at two thirty in the morning with like three or four pennies under my tongue just in case I got pulled over. Like Speaker 4 (13:42) a little Speaker 1 (13:42) piggy bank. A little boy piggy bank. Wait, this is Speaker 3 (13:45) actually such a crazy story. So then did you get pulled over or no? Speaker 1 (13:49) I never, ever had to take a breathalyzer test. Wow. Which is Speaker 3 (13:53) insanely Speaker 1 (13:53) lucky. I deserved DUIs. Speaker 3 (13:56) Yeah, yeah. That must have been very filthy. Speaker 1 (13:59) Exactly. That's disgusting. That Speaker 4 (14:02) must have been super filthy. You Speaker 1 (14:03) probably got Speaker 4 (14:03) some STIs via those pennies. Speaker 1 (14:07) Sucking transmitted. If you got an Speaker 4 (14:09) STI and you were in a relationship, you could say, well, oh, it was just because I was eating all those pennies. It wasn't because Speaker 3 (14:16) I was doing anything Speaker 4 (14:17) bad. Speaker 3 (14:17) That's where I got Speaker 1 (14:17) these herpes. I Speaker 3 (14:19) was just, yeah, I was just chewing on some pennies. You know, there is that thing called PICA, right? Yes. I'm obsessed with PICA. Where Speaker 2 (14:26) people have like Speaker 3 (14:26) TLC's My Strange Addiction. When they're eating couch cushions and detergent. Speaker 1 (14:32) Did you watch a lot of those? Because I watched a lot. Speaker 3 (14:34) HGTV and TLC were my favorite networks growing up. Oh my God. So nice. So fun. So comforting. My strange addiction was, and I get it. I really understand. Speaker 1 (14:43) And what was your favorite thing you saw someone eat? Because I certainly know what mine was. Oh Speaker 3 (14:48) my God, please. Well, there's two. You go first. Speaker 1 (14:49) This woman, and this one is so sad. Speaker 3 (14:52) Okay. Speaker 1 (14:53) She was slowly eating. the cremated remains of her mother. No, Speaker 3 (14:57) stop. I remember this actually. Speaker 2 (15:00) Do Speaker 3 (15:00) you remember Speaker 1 (15:00) that? And she was like panicked because she was running out of the remains. Oh Speaker 2 (15:06) my Speaker 1 (15:06) God. Oh my God. Like if I were her husband, what I would do is I would like. Speaker 4 (15:09) She had a Speaker 1 (15:09) husband? I would cremate. I Speaker 4 (15:11) don't even have a husband. If Speaker 1 (15:12) I were her husband, I would have cremated a raccoon and then just put a little of the dust in so that she never ran out. Speaker 3 (15:22) What Speaker 1 (15:22) am I going to get my hands on? I can't really cremate a human. No, Speaker 3 (15:26) you can't. Yeah, Speaker 1 (15:27) but I could cremate like a pet. Wait Speaker 3 (15:28) a minute. I literally forgot about this. And Speaker 1 (15:31) she would dip her Speaker 3 (15:31) finger in your hand. Ew! Like fun dip? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly like those. I Speaker 4 (15:36) like Speaker 3 (15:36) genuinely just got very nauseous thinking Speaker 1 (15:39) about this. Yeah, Speaker 3 (15:39) yeah. Speaker 4 (15:39) It's horrifying. Like fun dip, you said? Speaker 3 (15:47) Wait, what else was that? The one Speaker 1 (15:48) that drove me nuts, just because for me it would be the worst, is there was a woman, by the way, really skewed female, if you recall. Pika. Oh, Speaker 3 (15:57) yeah. Speaker 1 (15:57) Pika. There was no dudes. Speaker 3 (15:59) No, that's not true. Oh, okay. Yeah, remind Speaker 1 (16:02) me, please. Speaker 3 (16:02) Well, there was a guy that was addicted to making out with his car. Speaker 1 (16:05) Yes. Well, the dudes are doing a lot of sexual stuff. I'm not saying they're not on that show, but pico or pico, whatever you call it. No, Speaker 3 (16:11) you're right. I think a lot of that starts sometimes with a pregnancy hormone. Or I don't know. My mom had a craving of chalk, so she ate a lot of Altoids when she was pregnant with me. The texture, I guess. Yeah, it's like chalky. It's kind of weird. I know. What other one? Well, Speaker 1 (16:25) the one that drove me nuts because it's my most hated thing. is there was a woman who ate sand. She loved grinding sand in her teeth. And that's like, once in a blue moon, you're on a beach or something, you're eating and you get a grain of sand on your teeth. Like a grain of sand ruins your whole day. And Speaker 3 (16:40) then you feel like you're like chipping a tooth on a grain of sand. Yeah, you can hear it. It's Speaker 1 (16:44) hard. You think a piece of your tooth has broken off. That's what it kind of feels like. Or Speaker 3 (16:49) if you have like bonding, you're like, oh no, something came loose. Ugh, bonding, banning my existence. Speaker 1 (16:54) It does not Speaker 4 (16:55) stay on. Speaker 1 (16:55) Such a non sequitur, but I was with two of my oldest friends in Nashville a couple of weeks ago and they reminded me of this story. I just want to tell it to you. I was probably 23 when this happened. And I used to work for General Motors. Can Speaker 3 (17:05) I put my feet on the ground? Absolutely. You can do whatever you want. Speaker 1 (17:07) The Camaro had won like car of the year by Motor Trend, right? So there's a big event at this Detroit Athletic Club in Detroit and the car's on display. And then they go inside and they have this huge event. My job was to get that Camaro to the event and prep it, make sure it looks shiny. And then I had to sit there all day long next to the car in case it needed to be touched up. I was in my 20s. I was probably hungover. It didn't occur to me that I should bring some food. I'm there for like Speaker 3 (17:29) eight Speaker 1 (17:30) hours. Speaker 3 (17:31) I'm so scared. I'm Speaker 1 (17:32) there for eight hours and I'm so hungry. It's insane. I'm just sitting on the ground next to a car in an area of Detroit where there's nothing. And I'm there for hours and I'm hungry. And then all of a sudden, like a miracle, a guy walks by pushing a hot dog cart. And I need to tell you, it makes no sense because Detroit's. signature food is coney dogs there's one on every corner there's no hot dog carts this is such an anomaly it was oh my god i'm so excited i run up to the dude i can't y'all have two hot dogs so i get the two hot dogs he cruises away i'm probably halfway through this one hot dog can you handle do you think you'll be able to handle this you Speaker 3 (18:10) know what i'm excited i knew Speaker 1 (18:14) we'd be good hang partners we tried it never worked out but we'll still try it Speaker 3 (18:18) i actually want to circle back to that yes Speaker 1 (18:20) Go ahead. Okay. Speaker 3 (18:21) Circling back. Pin in that. Pin in that. So Speaker 1 (18:23) I take a bite out of this hot dog. And if you're a listener that's queasy, you really need to fast forward like 30 seconds. Speaker 2 (18:28) I Speaker 1 (18:29) bite down and I go, oh, fuck. Like I know immediately what it is because nothing feels like tooth enamel. Like enamel is enamel. I go, and I reach in and I pull out and there is an entire pig tooth with the root. Speaker 4 (18:49) What do you mean? Don't Speaker 3 (18:50) say Speaker 4 (18:50) the root. Speaker 1 (18:51) Joey, no, that's the most important part. I'm so sorry. Speaker 3 (18:54) What do you mean? A pig. Speaker 1 (18:56) Well, Speaker 4 (18:56) because Speaker 1 (18:56) I'm eating a hot dog. It was the kind of sharp pig to the incisor. Like Speaker 3 (19:00) a tusk vibes. Yes, Speaker 1 (19:01) tusk vibes, big. And then the whole fucking root. So it's fucking yellow in the end. And then the root's white. We Speaker 4 (19:08) don't need Speaker 1 (19:08) the colors. Speaker 4 (19:08) We don't need the colors. You do. Because you got to Speaker 1 (19:10) understand, this was the single worst moment I'd ever experienced sensorily. Where I went. Speaker 1 (19:17) Unimaginably terrible. Oh, Speaker 2 (19:19) horrifying. Speaker 3 (19:20) And then I'm like, how did this Speaker 1 (19:22) get into the hot dog? They grind everything. Did you chase Speaker 3 (19:25) this man fucking down? No, no, I had to sit Speaker 1 (19:27) by the car. I couldn't leave my post. Speaker 3 (19:30) What if it needed a... Yeah, Speaker 1 (19:33) there's a smudge on the window. That is Speaker 3 (19:34) so horrific. I'm so, so, so, so sorry this happened to you. No one in their whole world can top you on this. But we've all had a moment of like... Can Speaker 1 (19:44) you think of one? Speaker 3 (19:45) I have a moment where I was thinking about my sister lost a tooth in the morning while she was like drinking cranberry juice in her brown Juicy Couture sweatsuit. Oh, Speaker 4 (19:54) and it fell out and she like almost swallowed it and she had Speaker 3 (19:57) to like cough it back up. It was like a half... vomit situation to get the tooth in it. It's gross. And Speaker 1 (20:03) you witnessed the whole thing. Speaker 3 (20:04) Yeah, I was at the breakfast table looking at my multiple choice like equations before I went to school. Classic. I know, I Speaker 4 (20:11) was Speaker 3 (20:11) doing my flashcards. And Speaker 4 (20:12) she yacked the Speaker 3 (20:12) tooth up basically. And she was like, you know what, sorry about that noise. So sorry about that noise. Now that's, you're an actor. Warning, that noise sucks. Okay, wait, I want to circle back to our hangs. Yeah, let's hear about Speaker 4 (20:23) it. We were supposed to hang. Speaker 1 (20:24) We interviewed you two years ago. And we tried a few times. But Speaker 3 (20:27) this is what my biggest haunt of my life, not of my life, but my biggest haunt is that the last time we canceled, I was like, this is so absurd. They're going to think we're lying. Speaker 1 (20:39) I can't even remember what the reasoning was. Speaker 3 (20:42) My husband gave himself salmonella. Oh, he gave himself salmonella. I believe that. Do you remember that? No. But that sounds like an excuse. Speaker 1 (20:49) Yeah, yeah. But Speaker 3 (20:50) he was sick for... 10 days. Speaker 1 (20:52) How did he give it to himself? He made chicken and it was just... He was impatient. It Speaker 3 (20:58) was moist and juicy, but it was a little bit in the middle, perhaps pink. You don't eat meat. I do eat meat. I love it. You didn't eat Speaker 4 (21:08) that chicken. I did not eat... the parts of the chicken. You Speaker 3 (21:13) knew Speaker 4 (21:13) you saw. I Speaker 3 (21:14) said, this looks a little pink. And he goes, I'll put it back in for a little bit. And he did. Oh. And then he took it out and then we were eating it. And I was like, it feels a little bit pink, but he knows better. He made it. He was with the chicken. He was looking at it. He was touching it. He's in there. Speaker 4 (21:30) And then that night, it was like the day Speaker 3 (21:32) before we were supposed to hang out. We Speaker 4 (21:34) were Speaker 3 (21:34) supposed to get dinner the next night, I think. And then he like woke up in the middle of the night and he was like. Something is very wrong with me. And I was like, oh no. And then I was like, he'll feel better by tomorrow night. And it was 10 days. Diarrhea. Of Speaker 1 (21:46) everything. Speaker 4 (21:47) Okay, now do you think instead he could have had cyclospora? Speaker 1 (21:50) This was a year and a half ago. It Speaker 4 (21:52) happens every year. Wait, what cyclospora? That's the lightest Speaker 1 (21:55) thing that's been going around. Speaker 4 (21:56) Yeah, Dex is offended by cyclospora. You kind of don't like that people are talking about it, right? Oh no, I don't. It worries you? No. Wait, are you Speaker 3 (22:03) afraid of it or are you just Speaker 4 (22:04) thinking Speaker 1 (22:04) he's Speaker 4 (22:05) the Speaker 1 (22:05) opposite? I was at a salad bar. I'm the opposite. I'm afraid Speaker 3 (22:08) of it too. I am so not. Speaker 1 (22:10) I don't have time to worry about it. We're in Southern California. I don't Speaker 3 (22:13) think it's affected SoCal yet. Speaker 1 (22:14) No, I had Speaker 3 (22:14) it. Speaker 4 (22:14) When? During this whole thing. This one? Yes, this one. Have you been traveling? Speaker 1 (22:19) Yes. I Speaker 4 (22:20) was traveling in Europe though. It's not in Europe. Okay. Midwest? No, I didn't make any trips to Speaker 3 (22:27) the Midwest. Speaker 4 (22:27) You were Speaker 3 (22:27) in Speaker 4 (22:27) New Speaker 1 (22:27) York. Speaker 3 (22:28) After. Oh. I've been treating that thing like it doesn't exist. Wow. Good for you. That's the Speaker 1 (22:33) move. Speaker 3 (22:33) But I normally, I'm so afraid of foodborne illnesses because I have been so brutally sick in my life with foodborne illness. Speaker 4 (22:40) But this one, I was just like, Speaker 3 (22:42) right? You have such a dramatic thing to say. Foodborne illness, food poisoning. I had such bad food poisoning back in 2023. I'll never forget it. What'd you eat? I went to a Michelin star restaurant. I think I talked about this. Maybe with you guys, maybe not. But it was really sad. It was like a really amazing meal. I have all the pictures of that meal in my hidden folder in my camera roll because I can't look at them. Oh, yeah. But Speaker 4 (23:05) I don't want to delete them because it was a special meal. Speaker 3 (23:07) It's like the penny. Let me have your phone. I'll clean this up. I can't delete that. Speaker 1 (23:11) Like Speaker 3 (23:11) it was a really special memory, but I can't look at the food without feeling so gross. That night it was happening mouth and bum. I genuinely thought I was like going to die. Yeah. Speaker 4 (23:21) I've had that Speaker 1 (23:22) several times. Speaker 3 (23:23) And I was hoping I would because it was so bad. I was so terrified of eating things after that, especially if like it was seafood, lettuces or anything. But you know, the brain and the body forget. And now I'm like, whatever. Well, Speaker 1 (23:35) time Speaker 3 (23:35) heals all. Exactly. Time heals all. In Speaker 1 (23:38) September, I will have not had a drink in 22 years. And I have never even gotten close, right? Congratulations. I'm not even bragging about that. I just want you to know. In 22 years, I've never been tempted to drink. The only time I was like, I may have to drink. I've been on a USO tour. I was eating all the military food for eight days. Then we flew out of Kuwait, the first class lounge. There's a beautiful buffet. I went nuts. My friends were like, you're getting real bold with the Kuwaiti buffet. I was like, what are you talking about? Don't be racist. What are you talking about? Speaker 4 (24:10) You Speaker 3 (24:10) did not say that. Speaker 1 (24:11) I did to be funny. You did? Yeah, to be funny. I'm like, stop being racist. Get on the airplane. fucking during taxing, I'm like, Speaker 3 (24:18) I Speaker 1 (24:19) have a tiny, like, I'm going to let a bubble out. Speaker 3 (24:22) Like a burp? Speaker 1 (24:23) No. The other end. Oh, Speaker 3 (24:25) bubble? Like a fart? Yeah, but Speaker 1 (24:27) I'm Speaker 3 (24:27) going Speaker 1 (24:27) to let first a bubble. I'm going to let a micron out first. I know exactly what you mean. I knew you would. I knew you would. You Speaker 3 (24:34) have to, like, a little, like, you know, the ones where, like, they almost disappear in your cheek and it's like. Speaker 1 (24:39) Yeah. I think of it as like a bubble this big that comes out. And I know that I let a bubble this big out. And that little bubble told me you're dead. You're in so much trouble. And I was in so much trouble. So then that was a six or eight hour flight to Germany. Then there was a six hour flight to New York. Speaker 2 (24:59) Both ways, the whole Speaker 1 (25:00) ride, then get on the plane in New York to fly to LA. I got another five and a half hours. And when I sat down on the plane for that five and a half hours, I was in so much pain and agony. I didn't know how I was going to get through the five-hour flight. I didn't Speaker 3 (25:14) know Speaker 1 (25:14) how you got it through any of Speaker 3 (25:15) them. Speaker 1 (25:15) I might have to have a Jack and Diet to like exist. Oh Speaker 3 (25:19) my God. That's the only Speaker 1 (25:20) time I thought I might have to, for like medical reasons, have a drink or something. Speaker 3 (25:25) That is crazy that that was like your only tempting moment. But I know the moment before you get food poisoning, that is a, it's a harrowing time. You Speaker 1 (25:35) know. Speaker 3 (25:36) After my big meal in Barcelona, I'm eating this beautiful meal. I'm on FaceTime with my friend and I'm like, I just had a gorgeous dinner. Oh my goodness. It was amazing. I am so full. Oh, yes, yes, yes. Yeah. Speaker 1 (25:49) It starts with a really full feeling. You're right. I Speaker 3 (25:52) was like, God, I'm full. I'm so sorry that this episode is... We've really Speaker 4 (25:57) gone down a Speaker 1 (25:58) rabbit Speaker 4 (25:58) hole. Everyone who is... Speaker 1 (26:00) Is still with us. This is Speaker 4 (26:01) a problem for a lot of people to hear. Yeah, Speaker 1 (26:03) yeah, Speaker 4 (26:03) yeah. I know. And we started with pika and eating someone's mom. Yeah, we did. That's Speaker 3 (26:08) how Speaker 1 (26:08) we got here, I think. I Speaker 4 (26:09) forgot Speaker 3 (26:09) about that. Speaker 1 (26:10) The other unique thing about food poisoning, because again, Speaker 3 (26:12) this Speaker 1 (26:13) isn't going to be gross. Okay. Just I've gotten it so many times because as we discussed, I didn't care about that cyclospora. I don't care. I'll eat anything. I've had it so bad a few times. One time in a hotel in Palm Springs, I was there writing by myself and I got it at a Thai restaurant. Don't be racist. All of it. I know. Well, Speaker 4 (26:28) it Speaker 1 (26:28) just shows I'm not racist. I'm not eating any Caucasian food ever. What do Speaker 3 (26:32) you describe as Caucasian food? I Speaker 1 (26:35) know. Beans on toast. I think I strike it from the record. Speaker 2 (26:41) Yeah, yeah. Speaker 1 (26:42) There's something about food poisoning, like on that second day or whatever, if it's that bad, where you feel a loneliness. Can you really, especially if you were in Spain? Yeah. Speaker 3 (26:50) I Speaker 1 (26:50) feel so lonely. It's like the loneliest I've ever felt. Is Speaker 3 (26:55) it because you're like, am I ever going to be normal again? Speaker 1 (26:57) Am I ever going to be normal? And I'm so alone in this experience and I don't want anyone around. Speaker 3 (27:02) Oh my God, you don't want anyone around. Speaker 1 (27:04) I don't want help. Get the Speaker 3 (27:05) fuck away from me. Stephen was with me when I was... Speaker 4 (27:08) Oh, that's nice. Did he want to take care of you? Yeah, but good God, nothing would have made it worse than having someone next to Speaker 3 (27:15) me. Speaker 1 (27:15) So Speaker 3 (27:15) I was like, go in the other Speaker 1 (27:16) room. Check into a different hotel. And Speaker 3 (27:19) he didn't get it. We ate the same thing. He didn't get it. It's here. What is a guy to do? I'm sick for a long time. I said, leave me alone. I hear the... theme song of Seinfeld, Turn On. And it was very... The volume was high and I was in no place to hear. And I was like, turn that down. Speaker 1 (27:37) Your favorite song would sound terrible when you're in that state. Speaker 3 (27:40) Oh, God, horrible. I know. Should we move on? Yes, we're going to. We're going to Speaker 1 (27:45) go Speaker 3 (27:45) to the thing that. Speaker 1 (27:46) No, this Speaker 3 (27:46) is great. I Speaker 1 (27:47) can't believe I didn't discover this the last time we spoke. Discover Speaker 3 (27:52) what? Speaker 1 (27:52) This is maybe my favorite thing I've learned about you is that Terry King, your father. was a competitive arm wrestler in the 80s. Yes. In 1987, in his weight class, won a championship and was a technical advisor on Over the Top. Is that part Speaker 3 (28:12) true? So I actually didn't know about this 87 championship. I have pictures of my dad from that time. But he moved to California from Arkansas when he was 17 to become a stuntman. And it never happened for him. But he did do one job. And that one job was Sylvester Stallone's stunt double in Over the Top. Wow. Isn't that crazy? There's a picture. Is Speaker 1 (28:34) that him Speaker 3 (28:34) on Speaker 1 (28:34) the right? No. Speaker 3 (28:35) On the left. No, I'm kidding. That is no, neither of those. Is this an AI image? No. Okay, Rob, this is a wrong image. It's me taking a Speaker 1 (28:43) photograph off of the computer to send to Rob. I was searching everywhere for a picture of Terry King in this era arm wrestling. And I thought, oh, if he's the 87 champ, there'll be photos of that. It's Speaker 3 (28:54) a pretty wild story. It's like to move here from Arkansas and he wound up becoming an electrician basically for the Department of Water and Power for 45 years. That's what my dad's career was. But before that, yeah, he was a professional arm wrestler. Does Speaker 1 (29:07) he have enormous pipes? Because some of these guys, they don't, and yet they're so strong. No, my Speaker 3 (29:11) dad used to, I mean, he's thinner now and everything, but he used to have, his forearms were like the same size as his biceps. And my dad never went to the
