We could not be more excited to have our incredibly, and I mean incredibly special guest here with us today for the first time. She is an extremely funny, extremely successful stand-up comedian. Yes. One of the benchmarks. Pillars. That we looked up to, that we saw. Speaker 4 (1:57) Pillar in our society. Got a brand new book out. Speaker 3 (2:00) Actually, never mind. Give it up for Taylor Thomas. Speaker 2 (2:02) Yay! Speaker 2 (2:04) Thanks for having me, guys. That was very impressive. I didn't know how to Speaker 3 (2:07) approach that because when we got up here in 2013, you were like cooking. You were like... In 2013? Yeah. Speaker 2 (2:13) No, not in 2013. In Speaker 3 (2:14) our Speaker 2 (2:14) eyes, more than Speaker 4 (2:15) we were, for sure. I graduated Speaker 2 (2:16) high school in 2011, so that can't be true. Somewhere around there. Yeah. Maybe like 20... Fuck, I should have checked my dates. Yeah, no, it's all right. I'm like, I'm trying to think. I Speaker 1 (2:25) was Speaker 2 (2:25) like, where was I in 2013? And I think Speaker 3 (2:27) I was... Speaker 2 (2:27) When we were Speaker 3 (2:27) slogging out in the village, when we were up here, we just remember seeing... You were like... You were like a company. You were moving. Speaker 2 (2:34) That is Speaker 3 (2:34) not true, man. Speaker 2 (2:35) I really don't. I want to yes and you so bad, but I'm telling you right now. She was 11. I get what you're saying. I was not there yet. I don't think I had even been to New York at that age. I'm so sorry. We can cut all of this if you want. No, Speaker 4 (2:50) this Speaker 2 (2:50) is so perfect. In 2013, I was 19, I think, and I was full time at 21. And so I think I probably was coming to New York around when I was 21. All right, whatever. Speaker 4 (3:04) It's all right. No, no, Speaker 2 (3:06) no. It's so nice. You're the opposite of a creep. You weren't paying attention to me when I was a teen. Speaker 4 (3:10) Yes, Speaker 3 (3:10) there you go. Speaker 2 (3:11) This actually turned out great for you. It would be weird if you knew where I was. If Speaker 3 (3:15) this would have came out smoothly, it would have been good. No, no, this Speaker 1 (3:18) was good. Speaker 3 (3:18) Which I used to do it very smoothly. He knows what I mean. That was a test Speaker 2 (3:21) and you passed. Thank you. Speaker 3 (3:23) Always very impressed with your career. No, that's so nice. How you did it. How funny you are. Yes. Amazing. Thank you, that's Speaker 2 (3:29) nice. Yeah, you just met a few years later. Oh, no, no, I was Speaker 1 (3:32) like... I was on Speaker 2 (3:33) drugs! And I clearly was like the worst type of kid in school where I'm just like, well, actually, it was this time and this date. I Speaker 1 (3:40) like Speaker 2 (3:40) that, though. So that was annoying. Sorry, my bad. Don't be silly. Speaker 4 (3:42) It's perfect. I just can't Speaker 2 (3:44) take credit for being successful any earlier than I was. Speaker 4 (3:46) I respect. It's Speaker 3 (3:48) just Speaker 2 (3:48) very Speaker 3 (3:48) him Speaker 4 (3:49) in the Speaker 3 (3:49) first company. Speaker 4 (3:49) I wouldn't Speaker 3 (3:50) have done that. I would Speaker 4 (3:51) have aged it back. You're talking Speaker 3 (3:52) about the 80s. We were always like, damn, she's cooking. That's nice. That's really, Speaker 4 (3:57) really nice. Speaker 2 (3:57) Yeah. Speaker 4 (3:58) Anyway. Speaker 2 (3:59) All right. I'm so sorry. No, that's perfect. I fucked this up. No, it's perfect. No, Speaker 4 (4:04) no, it's Speaker 2 (4:05) perfect. Speaker 4 (4:06) He does this most episodes. No, I don't. He'll try to bog down a certain date or something and it's way off. No, it's totally Speaker 2 (4:12) okay. I just don't want anyone listening to go, she's been successful for how long? A hundred years. And they go, no, she wasn't. She was total trash back then. So, you know. Good stuff. Yeah, please. Speaker 3 (4:24) Let's Speaker 2 (4:24) go Speaker 3 (4:24) back to the 70s. Speaker 2 (4:25) Yes, yes, yes. When I was absolutely killing it. Yes. Speaker 3 (4:27) Give us the origin story, your backstory, where you grew up, moms, dads, brothers. California. Everyone Speaker 2 (4:32) thinks I'm from the Midwest, but it was California. Why is that, do you think? I got a round, friendly face. Yeah. And everyone goes, you must be kind from a cornfield. And I'm not. Speaker 3 (4:41) I thought that too. Speaker 2 (4:42) And Speaker 3 (4:42) I Speaker 2 (4:42) understand though. And I do think it's people, people tell me I sound like I have a Midwestern accent, but I don't think that I do. I think maybe central California sounds a little Midwestern sometimes, but also LA, everybody's like, you have an accent and you're like, that's kindness that you're unfamiliar with. I'm Speaker 4 (4:56) not an asshole. Yeah. That's the Speaker 2 (4:58) twang you don't recognize. Uh, but yeah, I grew up in California, more like central California than like Southern California when I was, you know, 10 or whatever okay Speaker 4 (5:06) and Speaker 2 (5:07) uh then i started doing stand-up when i was 16 so i started in high school yeah really yeah i took a class killing Speaker 3 (5:13) it i know Speaker 2 (5:14) well you know or i was like focus Speaker 3 (5:16) sharp Speaker 2 (5:16) focus sharp no there's a woman at our church who was gonna take a comedy class from like a christian church comic and she was like told my dad she's like you guys should go and so we all took it as a family me and my dad and this woman from our church uh who was great and we all Shout out Karen. We all took it together and then started doing stand-up and that guy had me open for him sometimes. It really feels like I fell into it. It was really a weird, weird origin story that for a long time I was like, this is not cool and let's move on. I wanted the cool, yeah, I started in high school and I was sneaking into the comedy clubs. Speaker 4 (5:52) Yeah, I was a Speaker 2 (5:52) tortured artist and going Speaker 4 (5:53) to CBGBs or whatever. They were sneaking me shots, but Speaker 2 (5:57) I didn't have it like that. I was performing in churches until I was like... Speaker 4 (6:01) Wow. I like that. You do? Okay, good. Was it a religious upbringing? Speaker 2 (6:06) Very religious upbringing. Super sheltered. Yeah. Did you guys grow up religious at all? Speaker 4 (6:10) Catholic. Speaker 3 (6:10) Yeah, not too crazy. But like Speaker 2 (6:12) serious about it or like Christmas? The guilt Speaker 3 (6:15) and stuff like that. Yeah. Is that Speaker 2 (6:16) still in there, the Catholic guilt? Speaker 3 (6:18) Lady, I'm a mess. Speaker 2 (6:23) Numbers and guilt. Me blowing that, I almost jumped out a window. I was going to ask. I was like, I'm so sorry. Because I beat myself up for literally everything, even if it's nothing. So I do relate on that level. But no, I was just very, very Christian growing up. So it also made sense why I was only allowed to perform in churches as a kid. Speaker 4 (6:41) What did Speaker 3 (6:42) your Speaker 4 (6:42) mom Speaker 3 (6:42) and dad Speaker 4 (6:42) do? Speaker 2 (6:43) My mom, well, my mom died when I was a kid and then that's Speaker 3 (6:46) all Speaker 2 (6:46) right. And then my dad had a couple of different jobs. He was a music teacher when I was really young. Okay. And then went into like real estate later. Was Speaker 4 (6:55) he in the band in the church at all? Did he play? Speaker 2 (6:58) No, I don't think he did. I'm not sure. I don't think he did. No, but he was a very good singer and played piano and all that stuff. But I have no, can you guys sing or do anything? He's Speaker 4 (7:06) good. He's a talented Speaker 2 (7:07) musician. Speaker 4 (7:08) Really? Speaker 2 (7:09) What do Speaker 3 (7:09) you Speaker 2 (7:09) play? Speaker 3 (7:10) Guitar. Speaker 2 (7:10) Guitar. Oh, Speaker 3 (7:11) that's fucking cool. Man, not really. Kind of annoying. Speaker 2 (7:15) Do you insist on playing stuff at parties and stuff? No, but I'll Speaker 3 (7:18) throw it in their face a little bit. Speaker 2 (7:20) You'll go, I could play that if I wanted. But I won't because I'm not a dick. I'll do Speaker 4 (7:23) a thing sometimes. Like, is that a G? I think it's a G chord. Like, all right. I don't Speaker 2 (7:26) know. I don't know. I don't know. You're like, pretend you don't know the rest of us. You're not better than us because you know what the G4 is. Exactly. No, I wish I was better. I faked my way through eight years of band. I was so bad at it. You were in band. What did you play? I Speaker 4 (7:38) was Speaker 2 (7:38) in band. I played clarinet and then trumpet for a couple years. And I was terrible at both. I was so bad. What Speaker 4 (7:43) a wholesome upbringing. Oh, so wholesome. It feels wholesome. And then wholesome face. It's all real wholesome. Speaker 2 (7:48) It's not cool at all. Were you guys cool growing up? You were cool? I like it when people admit it. I like when people just go, yeah. That was cool. It's Speaker 3 (7:56) more of an embarrassing thing because I peaked in high school. No. As far as that. Speaker 2 (8:01) You're very successful. You were more successful than this in high school? Yeah, I was one of the Speaker 3 (8:06) biggest comics in the world when I was Speaker 2 (8:07) in Speaker 3 (8:07) high school. Speaker 2 (8:08) You should have heard my podcast in high school. I talk Speaker 3 (8:10) about it all the time. Speaker 4 (8:12) He's, you know. I'm a loser. Speaker 2 (8:14) Jesus Speaker 4 (8:15) Christ. Speaker 2 (8:16) You're like, I was playing guitar in the end zone. I was crushing it. I was on the football team. You were? Yeah. See, I knew it. I heard guitar, I heard cool in high school, and I bet you were fucking scoring goals too. Rolled up my jeans? Rolled Speaker 4 (8:28) up Speaker 2 (8:28) your jeans? Well, of course, you gotta roll up your jeans. Were you cool? Speaker 4 (8:31) I was cool, yeah, enough. I was more of the hanging out, smoking cigs type of kid. Oh, that's Speaker 2 (8:37) cool. Speaker 4 (8:37) Drinking beers early. But that is different. Little tortured soul, you know what I mean? Dark. Speaker 2 (8:41) Yeah. No, Speaker 4 (8:42) not at all. I was a fat kid who was trying to smoke cigarettes. It was not cool. I Speaker 2 (8:47) wasn't cool at all. I Speaker 4 (8:47) was Speaker 2 (8:47) in mock trial and banned. Whoa. Yeah, eight years of ban. Fighting Speaker 4 (8:50) for Speaker 2 (8:50) my life. Wow. So bad. Not good at all. How big Speaker 4 (8:53) was the school you went to? Was it a big school? Speaker 2 (8:55) It was pretty big. I think my graduating class in high school was like... 800 kids? Whoa! That's Speaker 4 (9:01) huge. Speaker 2 (9:01) Yeah, it's big, right? I mean, I heard that somewhere and I just went, that's going to be my answer forever. So I hope that's accurate. I have no idea. Did you Speaker 3 (9:08) guys have lunch outside like in Disney shows? We Speaker 2 (9:10) had lunch outside like in Disney shows. Yeah, because California, right? I always wanted Speaker 3 (9:13) that. I Speaker 2 (9:14) always wanted indoor lunch. Really? I wanted like a locker and stuff. We didn't have lockers. You Speaker 3 (9:19) didn't have Speaker 2 (9:19) lockers? No, we didn't. Did you Speaker 3 (9:20) have Speaker 2 (9:20) lockers Speaker 3 (9:20) outside like in Karate Kid? I Speaker 2 (9:22) don't think we even had lockers outside. That's crazy. You guys had kids, Speaker 3 (9:25) no lockers? Speaker 2 (9:26) No. It must have been a Speaker 3 (9:27) mess. Speaker 2 (9:27) I don't think we had lockers. Did we have lockers in high school? No, there were no lockers. Wait, you guys graduated high school together? This is my sibling. This is my younger sibling. What? Yeah, Speaker 3 (9:34) yeah, Speaker 2 (9:34) yeah. That was my Speaker 1 (9:35) next question. No, I'm so sorry I got ahead of you. Yeah, I have three younger siblings. No, Speaker 3 (9:38) no, no, Speaker 1 (9:38) it was great. Speaker 2 (9:39) Yeah, I have three younger siblings. Okay. What about you guys? What do you got? Speaker 4 (9:44) I'm so sorry. Speaker 2 (9:46) Are people not usually like this? No, no, Speaker 4 (9:47) it's okay. Speaker 3 (9:48) You're Speaker 2 (9:48) fantastic. Speaker 4 (9:49) I'm matching the energy. I'm so sorry. Speaker 3 (9:51) You guys have Speaker 2 (9:51) such good energy. This is like old school radio. I've Speaker 3 (9:54) been blowing it Speaker 2 (9:54) since Speaker 3 (9:54) you got in here. No, no, Speaker 2 (9:56) you haven't. This is good. The speed at which you guys gave the intros, I was like, I sat up. fucking straight sure the hey everybody you were like hey guys what's up and then you just went so fucking fast i was like man nobody's professional like this anymore we're still Speaker 3 (10:10) bring we're old school baby it's Speaker 2 (10:12) impressive that's really my only Speaker 3 (10:13) good contribution to the show i got the intro down on that one how Speaker 2 (10:17) many sibs do you have Speaker 3 (10:19) though i'm the youngest of two irish twins my brother is 18 months older than me whoa Speaker 2 (10:23) you guys close yeah Speaker 3 (10:24) very close very different he's organized sharp Speaker 2 (10:29) But how big is his podcast? Does he even have one? He Speaker 3 (10:31) worked on Wall Street. Did well. Oh, okay. All right. Speaker 2 (10:33) Yeah, yeah. Fair enough. Fair enough. Family. No Speaker 3 (10:36) matter what I do, I'll still be there. Jesus Christ. What about you? Speaker 4 (10:40) I got two older. I got an older brother and an older sister. Then two half young, significantly younger brothers. So Speaker 2 (10:47) you're Speaker 4 (10:47) middle? Yeah, but not at all from, I was the youngest and then two got added on. Broken home. Okay. The younger ones are stepkids. Okay. No, they're my half brothers. They're my half brothers and they're significantly younger, like 16 and 10 years. But you Speaker 2 (11:02) grew up as youngest. Speaker 4 (11:03) I, and yeah. So two youngest. For 10 years. Okay. Speaker 2 (11:06) Which is usually the thing, right? For comics. Yeah. Yeah. I think so too. Oldest. I can't believe I need more attention. Speaker 4 (11:14) Yeah, that's true. Speaker 3 (11:15) Maybe Speaker 2 (11:15) they didn't get the right attention. That Speaker 3 (11:17) also goes with, you know, how you are. Like, you know, in my mind, you're like focused and, you know, professional about things. That makes sense that you'd be older. Speaker 2 (11:24) That's true. Thank you for saying that. A very combo. I hope people meet me and they go, she's the oldest. And they know that. And it's not derogatory because it also can be. Like, you Speaker 4 (11:33) know, Speaker 2 (11:34) being the oldest daughter, you are just like kind of baseline annoying. And that's not my fault. That's on God. That sounds like she came up with that. Yeah, that's not my fault. Speaker 3 (11:42) What did you guys live in growing up? Did your dad bounce around? Did you guys do well? Did he do all right? Speaker 2 (11:48) Yeah. You said he got into real estate. We were in the suburbs. When I was really young, we really didn't have money. I think we were pretty poor when we were kids. you know, one parent working, they were teacher, music teacher. And then like my mom was in the hospital for a couple of years. Like, so Speaker 4 (12:05) that's not, Speaker 2 (12:06) sorry, this is, it's hard to talk about like serious stuff when you guys have the upbeat energy. Cause then you come in, you're like, Oh, I'm going to bring down the fucking vibe. Not at all. We were up here. So like, Hey, what's Speaker 4 (12:18) up Speaker 2 (12:18) everybody? And then you're like, tell us about your mom. Speaker 4 (12:21) Yeah, no, it's obviously not that. So Speaker 2 (12:23) she died. What was that like? The reason Speaker 3 (12:26) I asked that is when you said music teacher, then got into real estate, it's. perfect for the show, maybe humble beginnings and he hit real estate, started doing well. Did he like that kind of stuff? I Speaker 2 (12:35) think so. Speaker 3 (12:35) Well, Speaker 2 (12:36) then I had my dad getting remarried and then the two of them started working together. In real estate? In real estate, yeah. And so my stepmom was like, I think my stepmom was a huge example to me of like work ethic. Really? Yeah, she was like a real, like love to work, was good at it. Like just... Like truly in so many ways, and I don't mean this in a negative way, like just very different from my mom growing up because my mom growing up was like a stay-at-home mom. And so then my stepmom was this like career woman. And now I'm like a career woman. So I think I needed to, I don't know that I would have known that I could. Speaker 4 (13:19) That was possible. Yeah, I don't think, I don't Speaker 2 (13:20) know that I would have had that as readily available as an option. I think I maybe would have. But I don't know, maybe my personal life would have been more successful if I was more focused on getting married and having kids. I don't really know. It's so strange. Don't you kind of think about that sometimes? That's not a social Speaker 3 (13:37) life. Speaker 2 (13:37) Is that? What do you mean? Speaker 3 (13:39) Getting Speaker 2 (13:39) married Speaker 3 (13:39) and having kids. I mean, I Speaker 2 (13:40) don't know. You come home to people. Sure. That's social. I think so. Speaker 4 (13:45) Talking to people, that's pretty serious. Speaker 2 (13:47) I think so. I mean, it's a totally different thing. I mean, like my buddy, Dustin Nickerson, who's on the road with me a lot, he has like three kids and a beautiful wife. And he's like, when he's on the road, it's like great. But when he's home, he's home. And it's like, he's got two jobs. Like he just clocks into his other job, which is like dad and husband, and then goes to comedian job. And sometimes I'm like, man, I wish I... I wish I could go clock into that job because it seems very grounding. Like, I think he's Speaker 4 (14:16) like Speaker 2 (14:16) a really good guy and like a really good person and like has a lot of perspective about show business and like what's important and feels like a very grounded individual. And I think like being married for so long and like having kids and like, I think it helps you have like your priorities straight in a way that maybe I don't have that. He just had Speaker 3 (14:35) a baby. He's always been put together and organized. 15 months ago. Yeah. But you can see the difference. Speaker 4 (14:41) Yeah, it's like, I'm obviously wrestling with it at the moment, but what you're saying is true. You're wrestling with the baby? Yeah, he's pretty big. Same weight class. This is his jacket. Speaker 3 (14:51) No, Speaker 4 (14:52) it switches where you just go like, I try to think, I go, I used to have to fit all other aspects of my life into comedy, if that makes sense. Social, family, you're like, comedy is the 100%. If you can fit the other stuff into where the gaps are, then okay. Which wasn't Speaker 3 (15:07) much. It was beers and cigarettes. Of course. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Speaker 4 (15:10) But I'm just saying, like, all of your time is spent to, you know, hey, I can't make the wedding. I have a whatever. It was all very... Now it's the other way around. It's like, how does comedy fit into my other, like, my real life? Yeah. You Speaker 2 (15:22) know what I mean? Yeah, yeah, yeah. And that's what I'm saying. Speaker 4 (15:24) He runs, Speaker 3 (15:25) you know, he's the... brains behind the operation as far as like business stuff goes. So he's always been smarter. I have the checkbook. Yeah. I'm an idiot. But even when the baby, when he had the baby, he, the way he focused and stepped into it is, is cool. Yeah. Speaker 2 (15:40) Did you feel something shift inside you where you're like, I'm a different person now? Not Speaker 4 (15:44) like right away, but slowly, slowly you just go like, Oh, this stuff, you know, you don't want to say it stops. It stops being the most important thing that, you know, that perspective changes of like, you know, Speaker 2 (15:55) So like a weekend, you're like, no, the baby's with us all the time. It's going to be like this all the time. Speaker 3 (15:58) Yeah, that is that. Speaker 4 (15:59) I guess I'll lock in. Yeah, I guess I got to do this. He Speaker 2 (16:02) started Speaker 3 (16:02) like making decisions like where he was like voluntarily doing things that are right for them. Does that make sense? Speaker 2 (16:09) Yeah, yeah, yeah. Which Speaker 4 (16:10) you're Speaker 2 (16:11) not number one anymore. Speaker 4 (16:11) Yeah, of course. Yeah, I'm no longer. And also, yeah, I'm no longer the most important person in my life. Yeah, Speaker 2 (16:17) I Speaker 4 (16:18) couldn't wrap my Speaker 3 (16:18) head around that. Speaker 2 (16:19) Yeah. He's Speaker 4 (16:19) still, I Speaker 3 (16:20) don't know if you're clocking the vibe. He's still Speaker 4 (16:23) kind of bothered Speaker 3 (16:24) by it. Speaker 4 (16:26) Yeah. So it's, yeah, it's that. It's, you know, but it is, you know, difficult balancing both of those things. You know what I mean? Yeah. But the Speaker 3 (16:33) real estate, I think, lends to comedy because like, as a real estate agent, you can start your own thing and you know what I mean? It's self-contained.
